“Becoming A Playmaker”

April 15th, 2024

Unlike some cornerback prospects in this year’s NFL Draft, Bucs third-year corner Zyon McCollum made a lot of plays during his college years.

Yeah, he played for Sam Houston State. But still, he posted numbers with 13 picks and 6 forced fumbles.

Returning to his college production — “becoming a playmaker” — is what McCollum said today is his focus for this season, one in which he plans to be the Day 1 starter after the trade of Carlton Davis to Detroit.

McCollum told assembled media at One Buc Place today he was known as a playmaker in college and that’s his next step in the NFL. McCollum has no career interceptions with the Bucs but he notched two forced fumbles, both last season.

Per McCollum, he’ll be very aggressive to hone his playmaking skills in practice this spring and summer. “I’m looking to fail and get better, fail and get better,” McCollum said.

One thing that won’t need work is confidence, McCollum added, noting the trade of Davis was “a really good reassurance” of how much McCollum is valued in the organization.

Joe has high hopes for McCollum, who has the advantage of having a twin brother in the NFL, Eagles safety Tristin McCollum.

Zyon McCollum said he and his twin train together in the offseason and Tristin runs exact routes on Zyon to help him hone his craft.

I’m excited about the secondary. Zyon seems like he has his head on right and year 3 should be the leap for him. Replacing Neal with Whitehead, adding Hall and Thomas… maybe won’t be the most talented group but being competitive and hungry to make plays won’t be an issue.

He’s every bit the sprinter that Dean is, with enough twitch to play the slot, a willing tackler, and stays healthy. Really like this guy if he can take the next step.

Zyon will keep getting better. And now knowing that he and his twin brother on the Eagles are working out together during the off season is another good sign too.

I just don’t get why Bowles has gone to zone. Maybe he knows something I don’t but if you watch the Philly game where we smothered the offense with press man look what happened. CD24 was a press corner. Dean… Press corner. At Sam Houston Zyon excelled in man coverage. Not to question one of the games best DC but I just don’t get the picture. As everyone says I guess it’s just a bucks life lol

I liked Zyon when we drafted him.
I liked him last year, when he played more snaps than either of our “starters”
And I really like him as a starter. This kid plays hard. Hes tall. Hes lightning fast.
He will be our best CB by December.
He’ll be the best CB in the NFC South next year
    We wont miss Carleton Davis.

And keep your eyes on CB Josh Hayes. We drafted him last year.
I really liked what he showed last year.
