Playing Baker Is Hating Baker

April 3rd, 2024

Is Baker Mayfield almost asking for nasty hits because of the way he plays?

A Buccaneers player sort of went there on Monday.

New/old Bucs bone-crushing safety Jordan Whitehead was asked about new quarterback during a visit to SiriusXM NFL Radio. Whitehead said he’s heard about what a great teammate and person Baker Mayfield is, but Whitehead explained Mayfield is not a likeable guy among defensive players.

“He’s going to be competitive, like try to run you over, talk smack … [he’s] one of those quarterbacks that when you’re playing against him, you want to hate him,” Whitehead said. “But when you’re on his team, it’s all love.”

Whitehead added that Mayfield was in his 2018 draft class and, as a result, he knows his game and has followed him closely.

That got Joe thinking about another guy in Mayfield’s draft class, defensive tackle Nathan Shepherd. He just signed with the Jets but last season Shepherd played with the Saints and delivered the dirty hit on Mayfield in Week 4. (Video below)

What really irked Joe about the hit is Cade Otton actually caught the touchdown pass before Shepherd drilled Mayfield. Joe wonders if Shepherd went overboard because, as Whitehead said, Mayfield is a guy “you want to hate.”

    Haters gonna hate hate hate.

  2. Conner50 Says:

Screw the saints I hate that team so much, crappy organization with trash players

  3. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Not hate……just another Saint taking a cheap shot. It’s in their nature.

  4. Dom Says:

This happened in week 4. The Bucs had a bye after this game

  5. Buc4evr Says:

Wonder if Shepherd got paid for that late hit? After all it’s the Saints.

  6. NCBuc Says:

The saints are far from saints! They should be treated the same way they treat teams everyday. Love the fact that Payton bit off more than he can chew with Denver

  7. Dom Says:

Trask and his 5 supporters live in Joe’s head rent free lol. Really tried making a narrative that this week 4 hit before the bye almost cost the Bucs the playoffs and potentially start a QB controversy in week 18. It’s a dirty hit no doubt and we are lucky he didn’t get seriously injured, but get your weeks and timeline right

  8. Duane in Sanford Says:

Sour grapes Saints ignoring the rules to try and play spoiler. They cant even do that right. We already knew Baker lives rent free in the heads of defenders in the NFC south.

  9. BridleOaksBuc Says:

Damn Saints being Saints…I always thought that the “Slimy Saints” moniker was kinda childish, but after last year, and after Jameis pulled that crap with the last play of their season, and all of the other BS they have done throughout the years, that’s exactly what they are…Slimy Scum Bags.
    Bounty-Gate
Sean Payton not letting go of Koetter’s hand post game handshake and being a total douche about it
Cam Jordan’s BS, even after being owned by Wirfs as a rookie
Kamara has shown what a thug he actually is
Michael Thomas bailing out on his team year after year, but collecting that paycheck
I used to think the BS between Lattimore and ME was a give and take by both sides…not anymore
Dirty hit after dirty hit after dirty hit, and Saints and their fans absolutely whine and cry that everyone’s against them
That is the culture that has been established and is now the foundation of that organization….Slimy Saints Scumbags

  10. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Well, the Saints are known for dirty hits. Just like the Falcons were known for chop blocks.

But to be honest…it’s football. They expect to be hit.

  11. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Dom is right…it was from a different game.

  12. TomBucsFan Says:

    Baker got grit

  13. heyjude Says:

The Saints are dirty players! Their past bounty-gate coach is not doing too well in Denver either.

Baker is tough and keeps coming back. He is the real deal!

  14. bucsfan951 Says:

I CANNOT STAND THE SLIMMY SAINTS!!! HATE WOULD BE A GOOD WORD TO USE.

  15. K2 Says:

Maybe the Saints still reward their guys for hurting players. They just don’t advertise that any more.

  16. Boss Says:

Saint play diry…..but the situation is asking for it. even drums it up waiting for drop it like its hot to get open and then wants to scrp with LB’s

He aint a bit^% about it thought asking for a flag every ten minutes. Man has cojones,

  17. BakerFan Says:

Was there a flag on the play??? The back judge had perfect angle to see it?

  18. JK Says:

You’re QB is a badass, Bucs

  19. JD Still Says:

Quarterbacks who love to run and talk smack are walking , talking , invalids in waiting, if there is one who hasn’t been , I can’t think of who it was

  20. Buckeyebuckchuck Says:

He’s mouthy, no doubt. Need a power back, you don’t want your QB picking up all the tough yards

  21. Esteban85 Says:

Baker better come back and light the aints’ up next season.

  22. Chris Says:

Hating a player and taking cheap shots says more about the dirty player and their mindset than the player being hated. Hating a guy for playing hard and wanting to deliver the hit instead of taking a hit tells m2 how sensitive some of these defensive players are when an offensive player fights back.Did defensive players feel the same way about Adrian Peterson? Seems like a double standard for some reason. I wonder what it could be

  23. D Cone Says:

One play he’ll be on the sideline, in the field of play, straight arm a smaller DB, and then taunt him with ‘Get up your F’ing weight. Baker the Bad Ass

One play he’ll be on the sideline, in the field of play, extending the ball for max yards, get rocked by Aidan Hutchinson, and get up hand motioning for a penalty flag. Baker the Bitch Ass.

If you are going to Give. You are going to get.

I’ve seen a Chihuahua square up to a Pit Bull and act like he’s the top dog until his lifeless little body is hanging from the big dogs jowls.

Defensive players love nothing more than Big Hits on QB’s. Get enough of them and they might end up making 1/3 of what the QB gets paid each season.

All comes down to playing smart and protecting yourself. Neither of which seem to be in the wheelhouse.

  24. Tony Marks Says:

Regardless of the Saints he does play dumb at times on his runs. You got the first down as the Qb then take the slide. I d’ be surprised now with a 50 mill quaranteed contract that he hasn’t been given a serious talk.

    “Be you but be wiser”

I’m hoping his first child, I believe this month, matures him some more. Talking smack is fine on pass plays but talking it to players tackling you on a run is personal because a Qb is not supposed to run over a run defender and its more embarrassing.

  26. OrlandoBucsFan Says:

This is why we need to beef up our O-line Joe !! But I still would go edge first since we muffed on Reddick !!

  27. Ralph Cramden Says:

JoesBucfans haters all present and accounted for. You guys are worse than dogs under heel in the kitchen while the ole lady is cooking dinner.

I’ve never seen a worse bunch of haters cranking on a guy who did exactly what he set out to do to maintain a winning team. Then you guys complain when he gets paid, or complain about this or that.., nothing but common scolds. (look it up)

    Wtf !!!

  29. Shane Callahan Says:

Good article. Folks hate cocky, gritty, greatness unless they’re your teammate. It’s like that in every sport. I just wish all Bucs fans were on board with Baker like his teammates and coaches are…

  30. Dave Pear Says:

That’s my quarterback. Real leadership. He may not last the duration of his contract because someone is gonna take him out .

What I’m still pissed about, is that bastage did that to Baker and no one took him down and gave him a pounding. Bowles needs to have his designated enforcers, so it’s known you don’t do that without consequences. Jensen would have handled it but he’s done. Mike would do it but it’s probably in his contract, he’s not allowed to get thrown out of games anymore for punching players.

C’mon Todd, you need your goon squad to be ready.

  31. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

That was a dirty play but was in Nawleans so of course no flag.

If only I could love to watch Baker play, but half the game is painful to watch because he plays so poorly in the first half. Rarely does he dominate another team throughout an entire game.

It’s crazy reading some of you “dudes” posts and it’s like you care so much about his life his and health like high school girls reading “Sixteen” or any of the other teeny bop mags. You get your knickers in a bunch and rant on and on about those who don’t drink your Bakerade. Calm down Francises it’s only football and Baker doesn’t know you exist.

  32. bob in valrico Says:

They also put Chris Godwin out when he was sandwiched and hit him low. He
still has some issues with his knee, I’m not sure if it the same one. Can’t think of any team that is dirtier than the saints.

  33. BucU Says:

We need to be the ones beating the shyt out of opposing teams like the Saints.

  34. Marky Mark Says:

The refs need to use the ejection clause on these dirty hits. Those usually come with a suspension.

  35. Marky Mark Says:

The slow start thing is on the former OC. He insisted on establishing the run with a glorified slot receiver as running back. It was only out of desperation that he turned to Baker. Bucs would have had 11 wins if the D could have held Bakers miracle comebacks against Falcons 1 and Texans.

  36. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

Marky Mark truth be told yes, however the defense also bailed him out against the Stankin Panthers and Doity Boids with two great plays by Superman himself Antoine Winfield so still 9-8 record.
