Great Leadership Moment From Gerald McCoy

Impressive as practice closed today
The Buccaneers were ordered to run sprints after practice today on the steaming hot practice fields of One Buc Palace.
There was a taste of summer swelter in the air and, frankly, Joe can’t remember the team running sprints after an OTA practice under Dirk Koetter.
Anyway, as the rotating gasser sessions were about to start, Gerald McCoy almost frantically barked and pointed at teammates to have their toes behind the line and not to start until the whistle blew. The message was clear: get the most out of the sprint and treat it as a game situation.
None of that felt scripted from McCoy. The vibe Joe got was that McCoy just wanted the team to simulate a fourth-quarter feel, when your mind and body are tired but you have to stay laser focused.
We all remember what happened with 45 seconds remaining at Carolina last season on Christmas Eve, a head-shaking 4th-and-3 play for the Panthers with the Bucs leading. Thanks for nothing, Chris Baker!
Yes, today’s sprinting order could have come from coaches, but that’s not what Joe saw or heard at all.
Joe’s confident it came from McCoy’s brain and heart.

It’s good to hear that in May, and not about McCoy saying how much his knees hurt. Never been a McCoy critic. I like his play, I like the man. But he’s not been a leader other than by caring, and leading by example. He does seem to lack the vocal charisma from what I’ve seen and heard. Two of three can be bad in this business. A team captain has to have all three. A fourth (Jameis): don’t be a BS artist.

Would love to see some of that Buckner grit come thru GMC, it’s really the only part of his game that is missing…remove the up and down emotions and focus on each play like its your last…

DB – you are so full of it.
I just went back and watched that last 2 minutes at the end of the Carolina game.
Carolina had a 4th and 3 at the 5 yard line. Baker jumps off sides (after McCoy just told everyone in the huddle “watch the hard count and don’t jump offsides”) – making it 4th and a foot. Next play was a run off tackle to the left that barely made the foot to gain. 1st and goal at the 2 yard line
Then Cam takes the snap in shotgun on an obvious designed run – fumbles the ball but it bounces right back into his arms as he’s lunging forward to the rt side of Center. Yes it was McCoys gap – but McCoy was double teamed at the snap by the RG and RT and pushed inside and back (did not fall down) by the 2 OLinemen. Gholston’s had only the TE blocking him initially, then the LG who had pulled, came over to the rt side in front of Cam and along with the TE cleaned Gholston out of the play. TD.
The play to stuff Cam if it was to be made – was up to your boy LD54 – but he was late filling that hole and the pulling Guard already had forward momentum and just bulldozed a path for Cam into the end zone.
More of a good play design + good execution by the Panthers than anything on that play.
So that’s what actually happened – but reality doesn’t fit your anti GMC narrative does it?

Sprints after practice? Wasn’t it last spring when we had joint practices with Jacksonville that our players were laughing at the Jaguars for running sprints, calling them high schoolers? Maybe our coavhes8have learned to have our players in top shape in this heat for the 4th quarters of games. Maybe they want to keep their jobs. Maybe they are building a winning team. Let’s hope so!

First off I am Glad that baker made that play. People have been biotching enough about us winning the Saints game and costing us draft spots. Imagine if we won the Panthers game too.

Bucs4life-Everytime you write that the Bucs were laughing at the Jags for doing sprints after practice (and you’ve made this claim a bunch of times). I’ve searched for any proof of this to no avail. Can you point me to where you’ve got read this?
I do remember the Bucs doing sprints after ota practice last year but I think they do that every year under Koetter.

Who gives a sh!t? They’ll run sprints again at some point and somebody else will say the same thing, but won’t get the joebucsfan shout-out.
Did you happen to look around and spot all the eye rolling that was probably going on down the line when he said this? McCoy knows there are legit alpha dogs in the huddle with him now and he wants to make sure they know that he thinks he’s the boss.
I would honestly forget how much I dislike McCoy if this damn website didn’t make it it’s lifes mission to let us all know he’s still there trying to be a leader. Pfft…

Hey there joe et all!
First time poster, long time lurker.
Born and raised a chiefs fan in ’85 (i’m from kansas, and my middle name is KaCey)
Had enough as an Eight year old boy with the Chiefs choking in the playoffs with HOF’ers at TONS of positions, and decided i’d go against the grain and root for the worst team in the league. That way when they won, it felt like something greater (twisted outlook for an 8 year old i know, i never grew out of it either)
My choice came down to two teams.
The Patriots or The Buccaneers. I believe the season was the 94 season. (Last year of cream-cicles?) At the time, i played a ton of TECMO SUPER BOWL and the pats and bucs were the worst.
Bucs won my heart. I’ve been a die-hard ever since. I visit this site probably about 10 times a day, and read most every comment.
I understand you have a business to run Joe, but with all due respect i feel as though (unless i’m missing something) that you have banned some DIEHARD fans, for speaking their mind. There’s already an assault on the sport of football itself with all the rule changes and the touchy feely overly PC crowd screwing stuff up. To be clear, Joe primarily bans readers for attacking Joe in appropriately (Joe has no time to babysit comments that attack Joe’s credibility or that misrepresent Joe’s takes.) That has nothing to do with “PC.” Joe also bans readers for malicious commentary. I love how you always point to the same play DB55 and place the sole blame on #93. You’ve got LBs out of position, a DE being pancaked by a TE, your other DE standing there, half your secondary on the ground, and yet somehow it’s the DT’s fault.
There are better plays to display your blatant dislike. Selective reasoning can work two ways FYI. That play was a TEAM fail. And incidentally, never should’ve happened to begin with thanks to stupid penalties.
But yes it’s GMC’s fault alone for 5-11! I truly hope that we can put this to rest this season. Some of these posts, mine included, are becoming repetitive.
