Rookie Minicamp Notes, Day Two

Backup QB Seth Lobato lets loose a pass for WR Adam Humphries in Day Two of Bucs rookie minicamp today.

Observations Joe had at Bucs rookie minicamp practice, Day Two:

The anti-Jameis crowd either better quickly get used to this, or find another hobby until September. Until the regular season begins, it is going to be all about No. 3. For the second straight day, many national media outlets were here to do live updates during practice of Bucs quarterback Jameis Winston. Both TV and print national outlets were at One Buc Palace — again. They were not here to broadcast updates or write features on Ali Marpet.

Yesterday, Joe was shocked at how much traffic he had. More than Day One of the draft in 2014, which is often one of the highest traffic days of the year. It’s a safe bet people did not flock to Joe yesterday to get updates on Donovan Smith.

Yes, it is all about the new Bucs quarterback, America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston.

Winston was much more on point today than he was yesterday. He made beautiful throws, especially along the sidelines. And he made some smart throws.

Alas, Jameis proved mortal with a few inaccurate throws.

At one point, Joe noticed Winston trying to hit Tyler McCullough down the right sideline. It was overthrown. McCulloch skied high for the pass, to no avail.

Joe thought surely Jameis way overthrew the ball. But no! Joe immediately heard wide reeivers coach Andrew Hayes-Stoker chiding McCulloch for not finishing his route. “Why did you stop?” Hayes-Stoker barked.

Naturally, if a wide receiver doesn’t complete his route and stops to look, a ball will be overthrown. Joe heard Hayes-Stoker all afternoon harping on the receivers to fully run their routes and not stop. Even Kenny Bell was scolded for this once.

* Yes, it is just rookies, most of which will be trying out for the CFL soon. Still, no combination looked smoother or more in synch and more natural than Jameis throwing to Bell. Joe sure hopes this is a combination we hear about often. The two are roommates after all.

* Undrafted free agent running back Gideon Ajagbe ran out of the backfield for a pass down the middle and was blanket-covered by cornerback Stephon Morris. Jameis threw on target to Ajagbe, but short. It was the only place Jameis could throw it without it being broken up or maybe picked. Smartly, Ajagbe noticed this and came back to the ball for a nice catch and gain.

* Linebackers seem to be the most active group in terms of hustling between stations. Of course, linebackers coach Hardy Nickerson was kind of riding them to keep hustling.

* Ajagbe sure looks smooth and sharp coming out of cuts.

* Bill Walsh would be proud. Jameis is leading receivers about a foot in front. This was a Walsh mantra: He demanded his quarterbacks lead the receivers by 12-inches which leads to YAC.

* Whoops. Jameis is human after all. He throws behind wide receiver Chandler Jones on a crossing route. Jones is still able to haul in the pass.

I’m ALL IN on Winston, but the only things I’m worried about are the elongated steps on his drop back and mobility. I’m sure he’ll get his steps right, but I hope the mobility we saw at FSU will translate against faster D Lineman and Blitzers in the NFL. O Line will be paramount for his development. I can’t wait for the first Preseason game!!

have known Ajagbe since his senior year in high school… great athlete and an even greater kid…think if he had went anywhere else besides the Gators he would’ve been a draft pick

  3. Mr Magoo Says:

Great notes and a very nice read. Am looking forward to reading more about how each player is progressing or not. Love pre-season because all things seem possible and we can dream about this being the turn around season.

Pewterreport.com had more insight on the practices that were held yesterday. Guess I take my clicks to that site until game 1 of the regular season. Reading this sounds exactly the same as yesterdays updates. N it will probably sound the same tomorrow n so on. Winston smith n marpet aren’t the only rookies us fans are interested in. Neither are opinions of winstons teammates about winston. On pewterreport they have playing styles of our undrafted rookies. I haven’t been to too many other bucs sites since I found joebucs 3 years ago but I might wander a bit. If I want updates on winston ill know where to go.

Who is “us,” six people? So the biggest acquisition the Bucs have had in decades Joe is supposed to ignore? LOL

If you want to read in-depth reports on guys who won’t make the 53-man roster, knock yourself out. Not sure what you think Joe is supposed to write. Joe writes what he sees.

Compare Joe’s traffic to other sites. Joe knows what he is doing. Again, Joe had a record traffic day yesterday. Seems Joe has the pulse of the majority of Bucs fans.

Joe never has been, and never will be, interested in writing about the obscure.

This is sort of like telling a store owner he needs to stock up on items he can’t move and the items that he cannot keep on the shelf due to brisk sales, he should ignore.

  6. Red Fred Says:

You mess with Winston and you mess with ‘Merica. Got it?

  7. delson Says:

I’m not talking about tyler mcculough or gideon whatever n whoever. I’m talkin about the 12 undrafted rookies we signed. I am pretty sure there are a handful of players worth adding to our 53 man roster n possibly the practice squad. U did just that in previous years maybe that’s what we were expecting this year. Like I said I know where to go to hear updates on winston.

  8. delson Says:

Continue to do what u do joe ur great at it. Honestly.

  9. Joe Says:

    Thanks Delson.

    Joe,

You guys, and your web site are the absolute sh!t! I am a Buc die hard, and nobody does it better. Other Bucs web sites have an agenda, and a corrupt opinion. I admire your humility, and desire to report all things REAL to the Bucs. You guys are great!

    Keep on keeping on, Joes!

  11. Bill Says:

Most fans are not actual “fanatics”; most hold quiet opinions about players before the draft, if any opinion at all. These are the people driving Joe’s record traffic day, fans that are logging on for info about JW possibly for the first time. Now that he’s a Buc, the majority of Bucnation will be logging to get the scoops that some of the regulars are tired of hearing about, either from Joe or other posters. Keep this in mind as the world, and this site, does not revolve around you.

  12. Joe Says:

    Thanks guys.

    Joe
You’re doing a great job and the amount and level you report is the best anywhere for Bucs fans.

Nothing is a lock but I am very confident Jameis is going to have a great rookie year(if we have at least average line play).

  15. canadianbucsfan Says:

Doing a great job Joe! Keep up the good work. I come here 99 percent of the time for my bucs news. Bucs don’t get a lot of coverage up here in the great white north.

  16. Eric Says:

I had no idea there were any other Bucs sites.

    Nor do I care.

  17. BlogTalkFootball Says:

Not only does Joe report what’s important to us, he makes it fun. You won’t read about sleepy, leaky Josh Freeman in the same light anywhere else! I don’t only read stuff here, but when I want insider info and levity, there is where I go.

  18. Joe Says:

    BlogTalkFootball

Thanks for the kind words. You get it. 🙂

  19. Pawel Says:

News is news! 2 more months of news before season starts, enough time to cover everything.

  20. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    It’s burnout, Joe.

After 3-5 articles about Winston per day BEFORE he was drafted, there was hope for a more balanced coverage.

Winston is important to us, but so is the defense and such.

Yes, we want to know the good things Winston is doing. But we also don’t want to have his mistakes sugarcoated. If he makes mistakes, say so without making excuses for him. Otherwise, when he plays, fans will think he cannot do wrong, and if he does, they’ll turn on him.

In other words…give us the truth, not the hype.

For example…did he have only one incompletion? Were all of his passes perfect as you say?

Because, I have to say…it sounds like his teammates are getting the blame, just like at FSU.

  21. Patrick in VA Says:

@bonzai – i don’t know that there was sugar coating going on. Perhaps something i missed but everything I’ve read so far has mentioned a bad play and then followed it up with a piece about the receivers coaching jumping on the wr for taking a bad route or stopping short. I don’t see that as sugar coating so much as him just letting us know the whole story. Again, unless I’m missing something

  22. Buc1987 Says:

Patrick in VA …you’re not missing something.

Bonzai wants failure to be reported.

  23. Caleb Says:

It’s funny, I hear so many people talking about Winston’s success is going to be mainly on how well the O-line plays (blocks) for him. So my question is: if the O-line was so bad the last two years, then how can we say quarterback was the position that’s been the problem? If you think about it maybe all Glennon needs is an O-line to play well (block) for him and we see a much improved player in Glennon. I’m just saying, I find it weird that the coaching staff never gave Glennon a real chance behind a good O-line. I guess it’s to late to find out now if he needed a real chance or not, they drafted Winston and that’s that. Just find it funny that’s all. That being Winston’s success being on the O-line, just so you all know, every offenses success is because of the O-line. Without a good one, the teams passing and running game will be sub par.
