Chucky: Garcia “Hot”

October 21st, 2008

Chucky, in his press conference Monday, referred to Jeff Garcia as being “hot.” No, not that kind of hot. Take it easy!

“Hot” as in football hot.

Garcia threw for 310 yards, and maybe more importantly, no picks (are you reading this Son of Bob?). But what was really impressive is that Garcia connected with 10 different receivers. That’s hot.

You know who else is hot?

Antonio Bryant About To Be a Star

October 21st, 2008
With injuries to receivers mounting, Antonio Bryant is likely to be the Bucs No. 1 receiver.

With injuries to receivers mounting, Antonio Bryant is likely to be the Bucs No. 1 receiver.

Chucky was talking at his weekly Monday press conference about the wide receivers. With Michael Stovall injured (no huge loss) and Ike Hilliard’s status uncertain after receiving a scary concussion Sunday night and the always unknown status of the White Tiger, look for Antonio Bryant to become the No. 1 receiver. So says Chucky.

“We’ll have to lean on Antonio… He’s a heck of a receiver. He’s made a lot of plays here. He started the season at flanker, moved over to split end when Joey got hurt. He’s a guy that can catch the football, he can get deep, he can run all the routes, he’s big and good after the catch. He’s got all the criteria that we’re looking for at the receiver position. I think he could be a great receiver in this league, and that’s what we’re going to hold him to.”

As JoeBucsFan.com analyst Jacquez Green has pointed out, one reason Bryant is seeing the ball more is that he’s just learning Chucky’s offense. Now that it appears Bryant is more comfortable, and with the injuries to the Bucs receivers, Bryant will likely become the Bucs No. 1 receiver.

Thank You Justin!

October 21st, 2008

Sunday, Joe was an honored guest of Justin Pawlowski, host of “The Blitz” radio show heard on WDAE 620-AM. This edition of “The Blitz” was a pregame version from the south plaza of the CITS heard prior to the Bucs game with Seattle.

Among the many Bucs subjects we discussed was the JoeBucsFan.com exclusive broke last week that Clemson wanted to hire former Oakland Raiders head coach Lane Kiffin so long as he brings his father, Bucs defensive coach Monte Kiffin, as the school’s defensive coordinator.

Joe encourages readers to check out Justin’s show, normally heard Saturdays from noon-3 p.m. The show can also be heard via live steaming on the station’s website.

Thanks again Justin!

Sack Watch: 14 Quarters

October 20th, 2008
Barrett Ruud is the answer to an ugly trivia question

Barrett Ruud is the answer to an ugly trivia question

Here at JoeBucsFan.com we’re going to provide you with “Sack Watch” because it’s so darn hard for the average fan to remember when the Bucs last sacked a quarterback.

Yes, the celebrated Bucs defense isn’t dragging down QBs or even ringing their bells after throws.

Jon Gruden did some quality tap dancing and spinning during his Monday news conference when asked about the doughnuts chalked up regularly in the sack column.

He tried to say the Bucs’ pass rush was good because it was disrupting quarterbacks, but it wasn’t great because they weren’t getting three guys around the QB and taking him down.

Nice try, Chucky.

Well, we’ve teased you long enough. Tampa Bay’s last sack was Barrett Ruud taking down Aaron Rodgers in the second quarter against the Green Bay Packers.

If Tony Romo plays on Sunday for Dallas, the Bucs will need to smack the quarterback around a little to win the game.

Did Favre Also Help Out Chucky?

October 20th, 2008
Since Brett Favre spent considerable time helping the Lions devise a gameplan for the Packers, did Favre possibly help out Chucky too?

Since Brett Favre spent considerable time helping the Lions devise a gameplan for the Packers, did Favre possibly help out Chucky too?

Joe was shocked Sunday when watching the Fox pregame show and Jay Glazer had a report that almost-Bucs quarterback Brett Favre spent over an hour taking a break from preparing for a Jets game to break down the Packers for the Detroit Lions.

Since Glazer’s report, other reports have come out confirming Glazer’s information. This news brings two questions to Joe’s head:

1) Favre and Chucky have a good relationship. Did Favre, or Chucky, pick up the phone and get some inside info on the Packers before the Bucs hosted them?

2) What kind of a snake does this news make former Bucs defensive coordinator and current Lions head coach Rod “No Comment” Marinelli to be?

Joe would be interested in your feedback.

Inexperienced QBs Continue To Struggle

October 20th, 2008
Aaron Rodgers and other young QBs are struggling mightily against the Bucs

Derric Brooks says the Bucs defense steps up its focus when preparing to face a young quarterback. Aaron Rodgers and other young QBs hare struggled mightily against the Bucs

What is it about the Bucs defense that frustrates and dominates inexperienced quarterbacks?

Derrick Brooks says it could be the team’s more intense preparation for these young QBs.

Against the Bucs this season, Matt Ryan, Aaron Rodgers and Seneca Wallace are a combined 39-for-83 for 396 yards, three touchdowns and six interceptions. The Bucs are 3-0 in those games.

“If anything, we focus more against a new quarterback because we don’t want to disrespect anybody,” Brooks said.
The Seahawks’ Seneca Wallace said his lack of experience was not a factor against the Bucs.
“They do the same thing to anybody else. Jake DelHomme played them last week and they were tough on him,” Wallace said.

Garcia = Flutie?

October 20th, 2008
In his weekly Monday Morning Quarterback, SI.coms Peter King compares Bucs quarterback Jeff Garcia to Doug Flutie.

In his weekly "Monday Morning Quarterback," SI.com's Peter King compares Bucs quarterback Jeff Garcia to Doug Flutie.

Not to get all Jeff Garcia on you, but Joe came across something interesting about the Bucs quarterback.

As Joe has often noted, SI.com’s Peter King has a must-read each week known as “Monday Morning Quarterback.” This morning King, who ranks the Bucs as the No. 4 team in the NFL after last night’s win over Seattle, compares Garcia to former NFL quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Doug Flutie.

The more I see of the reincarnation of Jeff Garcia, the more I see Doug Flutie with a few more inches and a few more completion percentage points. Did you see him scramble against Seattle? You can’t be much better than he was in building a 17-0 halftime lead — 19 of 24, 228 yards, one touchdown, no picks.

Joe isn’t sure he’d compare Garcia to Flutie. Flutie was fun to watch but really wasn’t that great of an NFL quarterback. Flutie’s NFL days will be remembered more for drop-kicking an extra point than winning games.

Garcia Says Dad Can Speak His Mind

October 20th, 2008
Bucs fans better hope the flawless Mrs. Garcia, and Jeff Garcia's dad, together can keep the Bucs QB from speaking his mind about his relationship with Jon Gruden.

Bucs fans better hope the flawless Mrs. Garcia, and Jeff Garcia's dad, together can keep the Bucs QB from speaking his mind about his relationship with Jon Gruden.

Last week Joe brought you the words of Jeff Garcia’s dad, Bob Garcia, when he ripped Jon Gruden for benching his son and mocked the play of Brian Griese.

The elder Garcia, a storied local football coach who is now retired, has a weekly blog for the Gilroy Dispatch. There he’s given Bucs fans a glimpse into the tormented mind of Jeff Garcia.

Jeff Garcia acknowledged his internal struggles after being benched following the season opener against New Orleans. He gives his dad credit for helping him stay focused, and he says his dad’s published comments are simply a father talking about his son.

“My dad is one of the major reasons as to how I’ve been able to approach this situation and stay positive and stay focused because of what he’s instilled in me as a person and the talks that we’ve had as far as just controlling what you can control,” Garcia said after the Bucs 20-10 win against the Seahawks. “That means taking care of business and everything will settle and fall where it needs to fall.

“You know, he’s a dad. I’m sure he speaks with emotion. He’s a former coach. He’s a got a response and a reaction to how he feels things have gone. So I don’t think it should be made a big deal. He’s not trying to create issues or problems. He’s just speaking as a Dad.

“I know he does the blog, but I don’t usually see what’s written. …Of course, the Internet these days, that’s what happens.

Back in September, Bob Garcia wrote about a conversation he had with Jeff.

That’s right. I said, ‘Hey, did you get paid on Monday.’ And he said, ‘Yeah.’ And I said, ‘Hey, what a great day!’ . Nobody died, we’re not going to a funeral. If That’s the worse thing that happened to you in (a day of) your life, you got it made. Go out there and do what you have to do.
He’s taking a different attitude, he’s looking forward to going to practice and being with his teammates and he’s ready to go to work. Everything in our family now, like I said, is going to be, ‘Let’s go. Stitch up that belt, and whatever happens, let’s go.’”

Talking to Jeff Garcia and watching him being interviewed, Joe gets the feeling Garcia is getting closer to the day when he spews his unedited take on the situation that led to him riding pine behind Son of Bob for four games.

That might make Garcia feel better and it would be fun to hear. But let’s keep our fingers crossed that Garcia can bury it inside himself. With dad’s counseling, and the soothing ways of his glorious wife, Garcia might just put Chucky’s benching behind him.

It’s Spelled “A-L-S-T-O-T-T”

October 20th, 2008
Joe was saddened to learn no one in the Bucs front office managed to check the spelling of Mike Alstotts name.

LIke many fans, Joe enjoyed hearing the story of how the 1996 Bucs mis-spelled Mike Alstott's last name on the jersey he wore during his first game.

Joe was beyond happy to see the Bucs honor Mike Alstott at halftime. The end zone crowd using the cards to make out Alstott’s famous No. 40 was special.

Joe was also moved to learn Alstott’s number will be retired. Aside from possibly Lee Roy Selmon, John Lynch or Derrick Brooks, no player captured the hearts of Bucs fans quite like the A-Train.

And, no, the Bucs didn’t dis Alstott by mis-spelling his name on the creamsicle jersey presented to him.

Bryan Glazer explained during the halftime ceremonies that the “ALSOTT” jersey (missing a T) was the one Mike wore in his first game with the Bucs. Glazer playfully apologized for the mistake.

Joe is sure that jersey would fetch five figures easily on Ebay.

Joe’s Take: The Bucs Are Great

October 20th, 2008
It's all good right not in Bucsland

It's all good right now in Bucsland

Football’s a simple game. Teams win games when they block and tackle, play good defense and move the chains.

That’s the Bucs. Who besides the Super Bowl champion Giants is better than the 5-2 Bucs right now in the NFC?

Certainly the Bucs have the edge in the NFC South.

The Redskins? The Bucs are better on both sides of the ball. Dallas? They’re falling apart at 4-3. Chicago and Green Bay at 4-3? The Bucs beat them. Arizona? Please.

As the Rays steal the headlines, Tampa Bay is quietly the No. 2 team in the NFC. And they’re improving.

Hilliard Out Cold; Fine Could Come

October 20th, 2008
One of the class guys in the NFL, Ike Hilliard, was hopspitalized after a ferocious hit to the head

One of the class guys in the NFL, Ike Hilliard, was hopspitalized after a ferocious hit to the head

Word is Ike HIlliard will recover from the big second-quarter hit by Seattle linebacker Leroy Hill that sent HIlliard to the hospital with a concussion Sunday night. But the shot may garner a fine by league officials, Joe learned after the game.

There was some buzz around both locker rooms that HIll’s hit might have been too high. The helmet-to-helmet blast with Hilliard coming over the middle also put Seahawks’ Pro Bowl linebacker Lofa Tatupu on the shelf with a concussion.  He was trailing the play and helped sandwich Hilliard.

Hill was humbled by the play after the game.

“I went and apologized to him,” Hill said of Hilliard. “When I looked at him he was out. I didn’t mean for it to happen like that. But that’s the game.”

“I can’t gauge if it was a high [hit] or not,” Hill said. “That’s the game. Like I said, I apologized and that’s it. I’ll have to look at the tape.”

Bucs 20, Seahawks 10

October 19th, 2008

Great win by the Bucs. Not pretty, but dominant defense.

Joe plans to have some more for you maybe later this evening. It’s late. It’s almost midnight.

Besides, the Rays have a two-run lead entering the top of the ninth. Joe is a bit distracted, like I am sure many of you are.

Could either be a historic night in Tampa Bay sports, or agonizing.

We will soon find out. Go Rays! Three more outs.

Quick Third Quarter Thought

October 19th, 2008

A quick note from Joe as the game enters the fourth quarter:

* While the Bucs have dominated this game, Joe doesn’t like how the Bucs haven’t put the game away. It’s only a two-possession game. Usually when you keep a lousy team in the game in comes back to haunt you.

Come on Bucs, blow this game open. Take it over!

Halftime Thoughts

October 19th, 2008

Joe has some quick thoughts on the first half:

* First of all, great to see Ike Hilliard walk to the golf cart. That was a nasty hit he was sandwiched in and it looked pretty scary there for a while.

* Not to sound too greedy, but this easily could have been a four-touchdown lead by the Bucs.

* JoeBucsFan.com analyst Jacquez Green might be on to something. He suggested wide receiver Antonio Bryant was just coming on because he was getting used to Chucky’s playbook. Bryant is having a monster first half.

* Joe is a bit surprised that Earnest Graham is playing fullback. What an unselfish player. Joe loves him.

* The offensive line is mangling the Seahawks defensive line. The Bucs have arguably a top-three offensive line.

* Seattle quarterback Seneca Wallace looks as if he entered into a very frightful haunted house and can’t find the exit.

* The Bucs secondary is running wild. Damn this group is deep and talented.

* Cool to see Chucky break out the Wildcat offense. Not sure how much of a decoy or blocker Jeff Garcia is. Be careful Jeff. Don’t want to worry Carmella.

* Not sure how many JoeBucsFan.com readers are aware but NFL.com has the live NBC feed of the game and users get to choose any of one of five different camera angles to watch the game.

Gameday Tampa Bay

October 19th, 2008

http://assets.espn.go.com/i/magazine/new/mike_alstott_c.jpg

Seahawks (1-4) at Bucs (4-2)
Week 7
Kickoff:
8:15 p.m.
TV: NBC, WFLA Channel 8.
Radio: Buccaneers Radio Network (in Tampa WFUS-FM, 103.5 and WDAE-AM, 620); Sirius Channel 127.
Weather: Per AccuWeather.com, fantastic football weather with temperatures expected to be in the mid-60s under clear skies at kickoff with temperatures slipping into the low-60s at the end of the game.
Odds: Per Bodog.com, Bucs -11.
Outlook: Seattle has never lost a game in Tampa. That should end tonight. The Seahawks are starting Seneca Wallace at quarterback, a glorified option/slash type quarterback. The Bucs defense should eat him alive so long as they contain him. Given the fact the Bucs have faced guys like Michael Vick in the past and contained him, they shouldn’t have a problem with Wallace.
As usual with the offense, the Bucs should use their great offensive line and pound the rock until the Seahawks scream for mercy.
This game really shouldn’t be close. And those are the types of games to worry about.
As an added bonus, the Bucs are honoring former great, fullback Mike Alstott at halftime. Thanks for the memories, Mike!

If Favre Were Here: Week 6

October 18th, 2008
Last week was the first time this season that the Bucs were better off without Brett Favre.

Last week was the first time this season that the Bucs were better off without Brett Favre.

Joe takes a weekly sort of pointless look at how almost-Bucs quarterback Brett Favre did with the Jets compared to whoever is playing quarterback for the Bucs.

Last week in the Jets 26-14 win over Cincinnati, Brett Favre completed 25 of 33 passes for 189 yards and a touchdown. He was also sacked twice and threw a pair of interceptions.

Jeff Garcia completed 15 of 20 passes for 173 yards and a touchdown. He was not sacked and did not throw a pick.

This was the first week of the season where the Bucs were better off without Favre.

BREAKDOWN: Wide Receivers

October 18th, 2008

JoeBucsFan.com analyst Jacquez Green, the former Bucs wide receiver (1998-2001) and All-American at the University of Florida (1995-1997), checks in with his breakdown of the Bucs offense, specifically the passing game.

Green, who won back-to-back Madden Bowls, is currently the offensive coordinator at Gibbs High School in St. Petersburg.

Joe: When the Bucs came out throwing long passes last week which was something that wasn’t happening with Brian Griese, does that get the receivers motivated?

Jacquez: All wide receivers want to make big plays. You get tired of five-yard passes all of the time. It helps to open up the offense. Tampa Bay can dink and dunk with the best of them. When they start hitting big plays that loosens up the underneath coverage even more which will also help the short passing game. It gives the quarterback more time to get into the groove also. It enables him to hit deep passes.

Joe: Since the Bucs seem to like short passes, would it be wise for them to go deep a few times?

Jacquez: Yeah. The long passes opens up the underneath passes even more. That’s Tampa’s specialty: getting the ball underneath. It loosens up the team even more.

Joe: In the past, you said the flip-flopping between Jeff Garcia and Griese prevented the receivers and the quarterback from getting into a rhythm, is that why deep passes were so rare? Now that Garcia is back at quarterback do you think they are getting into a rhythm?

Jacquez: That’s part of it. I think Garcia is more comfortable now. I think he was injured early in the year and that he is probably a lot more comfortable. Antonio Bryant has only been here four or five games now. He is probably more comfortable, too. Gruden’s offense is pretty complicated. I’m sure Bryant wasn’t really sure about a lot of his routes.

Joe: When Gruden is asked if Garcia is set at starting quarterback the rest of the year he doesn’t give a straight answer. Is that just gamesmanship?

Jacquez: Gamesmanship, man. It’s keeping both quarterbacks on their toes. You like to have competition at the quarterback position. That keeps guys fresh. Keeps them on their toes. Keeps them on top of things. You have two veteran quarterbacks in that offense. That’s great for an offensive coordinator.

THE PESSIMIST: Dynamic Duo Are Hypocrites

October 18th, 2008
The Pessimist can't believe linebacker Matt McCoy (above) was released less than 12 hours after getting a DUI, yet teh King of Turds is still on the roster.

The Pessimist can't believe linebacker Matt McCoy (above) was released less than 12 hours after getting a DUI, yet the King of Turds is still on the roster.

Hypocrisy, thy name is Chucky. And Bruce Almighty.

The Pessimist came across a little bit of news and is so upset, he can hardly drink a beer despite tons of college football on the tube.

Seems as though Bucs linebacker Matt McCoy got pulled over this morning 500 feet from his house in Tampa and got popped for a DUI.

Hours later, the Bucs released him.

While it’s novel that Bruce Almighty and Chucky had the moral courage to cut a reserve linebacker over a DUI charge (note: he hasn’t plead guilty or gone to trial), it’s the height of hypocrisy that the piece of human debris, the King of Turds, Jerramy Stevens stays on the roster.

Stevens, like McCoy, is a reserve. And unlike the King of Turds, while serious, McCoy hasn’t come close to pulling the stunts that the King of Turds has.

And yet, the scum that is the King of Turds claims he’s being singled out. The nerve!

The fact it took the Bucs hierarchy a few hours to wash their hands of McCoy and embrace that dirtbag Stevens is beyond an outrage. With McCoy, who gets a DUI, Bruce Almighty and Chucky have courage. With the King of Turds who was charged with heinous crimes against women, the Dynamic Duo bend over.

And yes, Bucs fans, Bruce Almighty and Chuck are slapping you in the face with this decision. For Bucs fans of the fairer sex, the Dynamic Duo spits in your face.

This is enough for The Pessimist to throw a beer on the King of Turds tomorrow and get thrown out of the CITS and arrested. It would almost be money worth spent.

In short, cutting McCoy while embracing the King of Turds, is disgusting.

Thanks J.P.!

Joe would like to extend a belated thanks to J.P. Peterson of WQYK-AM 1010 Sports for hosting Joe as a guest on his show Thursday.

Joe and J.P. talked about the JoeBucsFan.com exclusive report: Clemson University wants to acquire both former Oakland Raiders coach Lane Kiffin and his father, Bucs defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin.

Joe encourages readers to check out J.P.’s show, “Happy Hour with J.P.” which airs weekdays 3-6 p.m. and on streaming audio via the station’s Web site. Also please check out J.P.’s own Web site TampaBaySportsCentral.com which will offer more local video features and news than any other television outlet.

Joe is hoping Earnest Graham can lead the Bucs to their first win over the Seahawks in Tampa.

Joe hopes Earnest Graham can lead the Bucs to their first home win against the Seahawks.

The NFL Network still won’t use embed codes on its videos. But Joe has dug up the links.

First, Chucky explains why he doesn’t like night games. One reason: He gets too tired.

Next, NFL Films gives the game preview. Joe was unaware the Bucs have never beaten the Seahawks in Tampa. The Bucs are 1-7 all-time against Seattle.

Bucs quarterback Jeff Garcia talks about how it feels to be the starter again, which Joe feels should have happened weeks ago.

Lastly AccuWeather.com forecasts “football weather” for the first time this season at RJS — mid-60’s and clear at kickoff.
