Funny Name, Serious Motor

November 23rd, 2011

Joe’s not sure how to refer to the latest pluck from rockstar general manager Mark Dominik. His name is Daniel Te’o-Nesheim, which Joe has learned is an ancient Samoan name meaning large man with big motor.

He was scalped from the Eagles practice squad yesterday when Frank Okam was cut, seemingly because Michael Bennett has a sore groin, so reported TampaBay.com. Per the rockstar, via the Bucs Twitter feed, the new guy has a feel for what the Bucs do on defense.

@TBBuccaneers: GM Mark Dominik says new Buc DE Daniel Te’o-Nesheim is a high-motor end who practiced in a scheme similar to the Bucs’ while in Philly.

Joe wishes the new guy well. Joe’s also wondered many times what’s up Tim Crowder, a favorite of Joe’s who also has a high-motor and was a special teams ace in past seasons. Crowder’s been buried on the bench and inactive for two games this season.

Update 4:22 p.m. – Raheem somberly said Okam getting cut was a tough business decision, “strictly an injury deal” relating to Bennett.

Trust me Joe. Your boy crowder will get out there before this guy does. He knows the scheme better and can play both de spots. Teo whatever his name is depth here just in case one of or other de’s get injured. I think bowers is ready to show out now with michael bennett being down the next couple of weeks. He played well last week against green bay and I think is going to become a stud.

What’s up with Crowder? They haven’t needed him much.

Clayborn has been playing so well and playing so many snaps, they only need his backup to play 10-15 snaps a game.

And obviously Bennett and Bowers have been holding down the left side of the line pretty well too.

Thankfully, we finally have a talent problem at DE. Let’s hope they re-sign Bennett and don’t just expect Bowers to take over and dominate. We need to be 4 deep in this league.

All I remember reading about bowers after we drafted him was how he would be on th pup list at best. Boy they were wrong

Don’t forget about the Te’o bloodline though. You know the Bucs are asking Daniel about his cousin Manti Te’o from N.D. Manti could be the next Junior Seau =)

Daniel is a great player, I wish he stayed and played for the Hawai’i Warriors though.

I’m surprised Joe still address Dominik as a Rock Star. The Bucs front office is a joke.

Teo has a lot of physical attributes but never really put it together to become a major player in college or NFL. He is very explosive and strong for a 6’4 265 lb DE and was drafted in the 3rd round by the Eagles in 2010. Perhaps he can live up to his ability and put it together for us.

Hoping the Bennett injury isn’t serious… he’s been a monster setting the edge on the left side. The few snaps of Bowers I’ve seen eases my fears a bit since he’s been very strong. But still, Bennett is a hell of a player. Depth is nice though.

So that’s why bowers was in there more than usual. I actually liked bowers in there. He almost got there with the price sack.

Good News for all who were disappointed in the cutting of Frank Okam… Big Frank has now cleared waivers and been resigned to the Bucs practice squad. Now if only Dominik would admit the epic fail that is Quincy Black and cut him so that Frank the Tank can rejoin the active roster. Unfortunately that won’t happen during the season. I still love Dominik’s drafting ability but Black is quickly becoming the worst linebacker in the league and it sucks Dominik has to leave him on the team for the rest of the season hoping Black will improve and save face for him. I dont really understand it as Dominik has built enough goodwill with many of his other moves that I think he can afford to admit that the Q.Black experiment has failed. I hate to wish injury on a guy but we need to get big Frank back on the big club before someone raids him from the practice squad and a Quincy Black trip to IR would be the best way for that to happen.

As far as Crowder goes I think the fact that the Bucs cut a fairly productive guy in Okam to sign another practice squadder shows all we need to know about him. The guy is simply a rotational snap eater. Bennett and Crowder came to the team at the same time. Bennett has taken the next step and moreso into being a dominant left defensive end while Crowder remains nothing more than a guy who gives Clayborn a chance to catch his breath for a snap or two. Its time to move on from him and the Te’o-Nesheim signing shows that.

The upside to all of this is that Daquan Bowers will now have his chance to truly develop. I know he has been mostly quiet this season but alot of that has to do with the dominance of Bennett who is easily one of the top five left defensive ends in the league this year especially in run defense where he might actually be the best. Its hard for a rookie to make his mark behind a veteran playing that well. Hopefully Daquan is fully recovered and ready to make a splash now.
