Bucs Add A Veteran Defensive Tackle

May 3rd, 2012

No one should be surprised to learn that the New Schiano World Order will bring many roster changes.

And another change is here.

Per ProFootballTalk.com, the Bucs signed veteran free agent defensive tackle Gary Gibson to a 2-year, $2 million deal with $400,000 guaranteed. Gibson, 29, played for Schiano at Rutgers and entered the NFL with the Ravens as an undrafted free agent in 2005. He was with the Rams for the past three seasons.

It’s a safe bet DT Amobi Okoye, signed in March, will be on the roster. And one should assume Gibson will be here, too.

Joe hopes this latest signing comes not as a result of concern for Brian Price’s health but is born from Greg Schiano being sickened watching tape of the Bucs’ run defense.

    Good signing.

    So long Roy Miller!

  2. Brad Says:

Due to the inexperience and lack of depth on our D line had to be the main reason for these moves. I have to believe (hope) Dominik has done a 180 and is letting the coaching staff run the show. I am curious as to the health of Price. I believe if this guy is a full go this season he will be out best lineman. It was amazing how this guy played thru the pain he had last year. After hearing him doing interviews, Price will be a Schiano guy from day one. Count on it and mark the tape.

I’m with Patrick. I googled “gary gibson highlights” ……. and there are none. Hoping he’s better than Miller

  4. Brad Says:

@jbrock.. Google Bucs d line highlights 2011.. You get none.

  5. Bricen Says:

He’s been described as Roy Miller with better technique by Sander on Bucsnation for what that’s worth.

  6. Stevek Says:

Let’s get better all the way up the food chain.

Let’s not go crazy for old Rutgers’ stiffs now….can Brian Leonard be far behind?

  12. Tuggz Says:

Can he stuff the run? Signed.

Can Tiquan Underwood be on the way, former Rutgers player cut by Pats

Where there is motive there is usually intent. I don’t profess to know what the Bucs think about our D-Line, but something has them looking for alternatives for a reason.

During the pre-draft visits, some of the people that visited first were D-Linemen. Now what was that all about (motive)? They brought in Quenton Coples, Michael Brockers, and Chandler Jones, but didn’t draft any. These players were all high draft picks and not exactly what one would call depth.

I think under some draft scenario, which did not occur, one of these men would have been an alternative pick – which brings me back to my opening sentence.

They are not satisfied with or are unsure of something or someone on the D-Line. Look for further changes to be made (intent).

  15. Bobby Says:

Schiano just doesn’t want to get caught short like last season when the entire D-line was decimated. If someone gets injured you have to have backup that knows the system and the playbook. Building depth at DT is a wise move. I haven’t heard anything about Price but I hope he’s healthy and 100% for day 1.

This will help once Fish Oil McCoy goes down in October with a torn ______________ .

  17. Bucnjim Says:

We finally have a coach (again) that understands that it all starts up front. Good Defensive lines can completely take over games! You can’t say that about many other positions on the team.

  18. Thomas2.2 Says:

    Rumor has it:

He can complete a season without fish oil! Amazing.

  19. JS1506 Says:

    Bye bye roy miller…

  20. Buconomics Says:

With GMac and Price’s injuries, you had to sign Okoye and Gibson.

Look for another free agent DT to be added soon. Coach Schiano has to be prepared for injuries up front.

If the D-Line can stay healthy this season, this could be a pretty good season!!

  21. Bobby Says:

I doubt whether he’ll be good enough to rotate in on McCoy’s side. That will be Okoye but he will give Price a rest occasionally.

Great move. After we didnt draft anyone, I was worried.

This move gives us a solid player who will never loaf.

I was screaming for months that DT was our biggest need. And wisely, we signed 2 solid players.

Can anyone see a glaring need on our roster? Except FS, I think we look like a real team this year!!

    WR is now deep.
RB looks good, although I think we whiffed on Chris Polk in favor of M. Smith
DT is now solidified (our season is depending on Price and McCoy, but at least we npw have 2! Replacements)
LB- Goode is gonna surprise people. He will produce. Just watch.

CB- were cool. Relax. Wright, Talib, Barber, Biggers….not a bad top 4..we just need Gaitor and Lewis to step up and one of the new draftees to earn a roster spot. Adios Myron Lewis (he is just a pretty boy)
