Gerald McCoy On The State Of The Bucs: Explains What He’s Seen And Heard At Practices

Gerald McCoy is building himself a nice little media career.
And when the former Bucs All-Pro defensive tackle breaks down teams and players, rarely does he go negative. It’s mostly positive and constructive. Maybe 98 percent of the time.
But the former six-time Pro Bowler broke from character discussing the state of the 2026 Bucs. GMC is still one of the biggest homers for Tampa Bay in #NFLMedia. And GMC is a monster Baker Mayfield fan.
So what GMC said about the Bucs in an appearance on Kevin Clark’s “This is Football” podcast had to pain GMC so.
GMC has played enough football and watched enough football to know when something is messed up. And he believes his beloved Bucs are circling the drain. He isn’t the first to suggest the Bucs miss Lavonte David and Mike Evans. He probably won’t be last. But GMC thinks the Bucs miss Evans and David’s presence in the locker room as much as their production on the field.
Clark asked GMC what the issue was with the Bucs and GMC’s answer was damn near three minutes long. And GMC was visibly depressed.
He began by answering Clark’s question about the most disappointing team. It was the Bucs, he said. Then, GMC got rolling.
“It’s bad, it’s bad,” GMC said. “I don’t want to blame leadership, but losing Mike Evans and Lavonte David was a big deal.”
Joe has typed a few times that the Tom Brady leadership effect is long gone. GMC believes that’s part of the problem, no Brady, no Evans and no David.
Brady, GMC said, was the greatest free agent signing of all time. Not just because of his production but the level of excellence he demanded from everyone; no one questioned him.
With David and Evans gone, GMC suggested, there aren’t many Bucs players left that have the street cred of those two. Or Brady. GMC said that void is critical.
Another thing that irks GMC is the lack of a pass rush. He believes that is killing the team and it frustrates him how a No. 15 pick in the draft has been used, and how a guy that has demonstrated he can get to the quarterback, the coach doesn’t seem to want him on the field.
GMC has been on the sidelines of Bucs practices a few times in recent years, sometimes as part of his media duties with NFL Network and BSPN. GMC wouldn’t name names but he said while on the sidelines, he’s heard things coaches have said that he knows from his years in the league just aren’t going to work.
“I don’t know if it is schematically or what, but we’ve got to find a way to generate a pass rush,” GMC said. “I know for sure there are certain things that are being coached that I wouldn’t coach.
“Everybody coaches different, you know? I heard some things that was being [told] to these guys, and I’m like, ‘That’s not gonna work.’ But, whatever, I’m not in the building.
“But I don’t think it’s a secret why they can’t generate a pass rush.”
Clark was intrigued. What was the not-so-secret GMC brought up for the problems with the pass rush?
“You have a lot of talent in the room, but what’s being coached and how you’re coaching it matters,” GMC began. “Like this is the gift and curse of having great, great guys in the locker room. The Bucs don’t have knuckleheads. They don’t have anybody where I’m like, ‘Man, that dude is detrimental to the locker room. … ‘
“They have a bunch of really good guys who are very coachable, but the problem with that is, is they’re extremely coachable. So you’re gonna coach them to do something, and they’re gonna go to try their darndest to do it. So if you’re coaching something that is not going to work, they’re going to just do what they’re [instructed to do without questioning a coach]. But they don’t know any better but to do what’s coached.
“You got a lot of young guys in the room. Vita [Vea] is who he is. You’re not going to do much to change who Vita is, but you can do schematically put Vita in different positions to do what Vita does.
“Calijah Kancey is still young, you know?. He’s been riddled by injury, so he don’t even know who he is as a player yet. But he only knows what he’s being coached.
“Reuben Bain, he already is hurt. … [But] in the first two games, he’s dropping a lot. And it’s like, ‘Bro, you drafted him top-15. … A top-15 pick to generate a pass rush. A lot of people thought he was a steal. You haven’t even established him as what he does best yet, and he’s doing all this dropping.”
From the way GMC was talking, it sounded like the Bucs need a dawg (like a Jason Pierre-Paul), an a-hole who has the respect of players and coaches alike, and can influence them.
(Remember how Ndamukong Suh spoke openly of freelancing in the Super Bowl win over the Chiefs? Suh is one of the greatest defensive tackles the game has seen and is an incredibly smart guy. Joe guesses there were things Todd Bowles wanted to do that Suh pushed back on, but he had the street cred to demand attention and respect.)
GMC was on a roll and you could see the frustration on his face when he wondered aloud why David Walker isn’t on the field taking significantly more snaps.
“He’s the best pass rusher we got, and he barely plays, I don’t know why,” GMC said. “I don’t know why he barely plays, but that’s what I’m saying. … How these guys are being coached, I feel like is a detriment to them.”
Before Clark could ask GMC why he hasn’t told defensive players what they’re being taught is ca-ca, GMC said that is crossing the line because he is not a Bucs employee. It would be much different if he was on staff or a defensive assistant coach.
GMC was so frustrated about the offense he couldn’t muster proper words other than to say it is bad.
And now the Bucs and possibly several people’s jobs have their futures resting on the shoulders of an undrafted rookie free agent quarterback who has four snaps under his belt.
None of this had to happen if a little forward thinking and common sense were used. Instead, just like the Bucs have done for years, they leaned on hope as a strategy. And right now that’s blowing up in their faces.
If GMC knew the defensive coaching, specifically the pass rush coaching, was bad, how the hell did others who are at practice every day and whose lives have been in football not see this?
And why, instead of replacing the coach(es) responsible for this, the organization spent draft pick after draft pick after draft pick thinking (hoping!) the coaches would magically change their style?
This just makes Joe so friggin’ angry!

Okay so this basically confirms what you (Joe) and the fans have been saying. The coaches don’t care about a pass rush from the edge. They won’t coach it correctly, they won’t change schematically. I think Todd was ordered by Bruce to have an edge rush and it was OK because he wasn’t the one making the call. I think Todd is a good guy, but as a head coach, he’s horrible. Doesn’t want to make the wrong mistake and hurt the team, but it’s a death by 1000 cuts. It’s infuriating because it seems EVERYONE sees it

McCoy and the rest of ya can rattle on about the defense and the lack of having a pass rush, and all of that, all day long. BUT, the fact that the Bucs OFFENSE has yet to score over 20-POINTS in a single game this season, is THE #1-Problem with THIS TEAM. The truth is you are NOT ‘winning’ very many games in this modern day NFL, when it’s a STRUGGLE for you to even put up 20-FREAKING POINTS. I mean, you’re not beating ANYONE this way! It’s totally unsustainable.

I’ve said it before and so have many others… the locker room has tuned Todd B out. I don’t care about the players words and statements. Actions speak louder than words. Since the bye last year, this team has been completely different. And Licht and the Glazers allowed another season of this bs by keeping Todd.
Honestly, 1-2 more losses and this season is truly done. There’s no way this team can come back from an 0-5 start.
It’s been a hot second since we’ve experienced a season where it’s done by Halloween time, but this season WILL BE one of those. It just stings as a fan.

Despite what McCoy said and what all of you are saying, the defense is not the problem this year. Especially this past Sunday. They played great and I am looking for them to continue to improve.
The offense (QB) has played terribly and has put the defense in many short field situations. Yet, all games have been one score games. Even against the mighty Joe Burrows and his vaunted receivers. Whom I might add were shut down by our cornerbacks.
The Oline hasn’t played as bad as it seems. PTSD Baker has made them look bad by abandoning the play too soon an running out of the pocket into the arms of defenders before there is any real pressure. He has missed countless open receivers and checkdowns. When he runs, he’s ducking and cowering instead of keeping his eyes down field.
I think that JD will bring the leadership, calm and accuracy the offense needs rightnow from the QB position.

Where were thoseso-called leaders when we were finishing the year 2-7? One of them was loafing. Neitherof them had enough leadership to prevent that skid. It was characterized as a lack of effort. That’s one of the things that leadership is supposed to solve.
Calm down everybody. Come on in off the plank. This team is going to be okay. I prefer having our losing streak at the beginning of the season rather than our annual post bye collapse! GO BUCS!!! DOMINATE!!

Not a big fan of McCoy, but what he’s saying is all true.
I don’t even blame the assistant coaches for coaching poorly, because they either don’t know any better or they were instructed to coach it this way. Bowles has surrounded himself with assistants on defense that are either yes men or don’t have enough street cred to stand up for themselves. He’s an authoritarian hanging onto a flawed system.

While not knowing the specifics of what part of the coaching/management approach was wrong, it doesn’t anger me at all today because I’ve known it was bad for several years. Todd is a dinosaur and that’s putting it nicely.
Apathy has set in. That’s a horrible thing for ownership. And you can only get rid of it by acknowledging your approach was wrong and going in a direction that shows you understand you were wrong.
McDermott or Flores would not cure apathy.

Reading this just makes me hate the Glazers even more for keeping Bowels. Joe saw it, all of the fans saw it, the Jets origination saw it. Why couldn’t our ownership see that Todd is not a good head coach. I truly believe that if they fired Bowels last year and hired a proven winner like Jon Harbaugh, Mike Evans wouldn’t have left and we’d be 3-0 right now. Unlike the lost decade teams, this team has talent. But talent can’t make up for poor coaching. Very sad!!

The Defense played well Sunday – they gave up 16 points Sunday and provided the offense with a turnover where they did Nothing but throw the ball into the ground short of the receiver and Happy Feet around for a loss and settled for a FG.
The Bucs have drafted poorly on D in last few years – JTS and Braswell were busts and Hall was diasappointing and Kancey has been injured but he’s making plays this year.
The offense needs a QB – whether that’s Daniels or not we shall see but Mayfield has been awful.

Look how Ben Johnson turned around the Bears. Vegas is 3-0 with a first time offensive minded coach, and Kurt Cousins out playing Baker Mayfield. Same Cousins Robinson couldn’t coach in Atlanta. Jason Licht is the best GM this franchise has ever had even better than McKay. The man’s job is to acquire talent through the draft and free agency. He has been one of the best GM’s at hitting on draft picks through the draft. Most of them still on this team and most of the other ones who left are still in the league. What has been failing this team is a reflection of coaching. Bowles has never had a pass defense better than 15 in his entire career. His head coaching record speaks for itself. Jason licht came in after Lovie Smith and the decision to make Koetter than head coach was to benefit Winston. Bruce Arians was Lichts only handpicked coach in my opinion as Bowles was gifted to him by Arians. Bowles can’t develop pass rushers and his pass defense has always sucked.

The Bucs collapsed last year even with Evans and LVD. So that’s not it.
And the defense is 6th best in yards against. That should be good enough even with a lousy pass rush.
We’ll see if JD10 lights it up. If so, that points to the problem being Mayfield.

So GMC, also doesn’t understand DEs dropping in coverage. Last year I read that QBs have a 90% completion rate against these schemes. That article said it happened 200 times, and it never works think one pass was defended. Imagine being a player or having a job doing something repeatedly that doesn’t work.

Everybody wants to know how could Mike Evans leave the Bucs. He was in the building every day. Mike loved playing for the Bucs and wanted to end his career here, but he saw first hand what was wrong with this team and obviously felt the Bucs were not going to sniff a Super Bowl. Maybe 3’rd snd 28 was the final straw.

Joe, kudos to your comment above. That was a very effective way to give us information we’d like without violating any of your principles.
Kudos also to GMC. You could tell he had a hard time saying what he said. And frankly, I’m surprised at some of the things he said. Not the content, but him saying it out loud. Obviously this will get back to the Bucs. Todd and Jason, at least and certainly the owners. Would love to be a fly on the wall when this is discussed. Maybe somebody can make a comment that Joe can amplify about that some at some point.

GMC is a Trojan horse – I remember him during his Bucs days answering press questions at his locker – always a sour face and with nothing positive to say – about anything – then he spends a year with the panthers and then oblivion – his meal ticket is the rep he made during the Bucs years so of course he’s an “authority” on the Bucs – but he has a concealed animosity verging on hatred for the Bucs – I wouldn’t trust what he says

What GMC is saying is exactly what I have been observing. This coaching staff is terrible, they constantly keep trying to fit square pegs in round holes. They are too stubborn to adapt, what they are asking is not working and not working to their players skill sets. They are using the chess pieces they have. That my friends is bad coaching. David Walker is making plays, yet they aren’t playing him. Vita has a skill set, utilize him.

GMC just confirming what many of us have been saying for a while- this coaching staff has zero idea how to develop a pass rush if they don’t have a bunch of veteran pro-bowlers who already know what they’re doing. They are incapable of teaching these young guys, and forcing them to drop into coverage on half their snaps surely isn’t helping.
And David Walker… yes wtf is Bowles doing giving him so few snaps? Oh wait, I already know- he’s not good enough covering WRs down the field.
Glazer kiddos have completely screwed up this team for years to come with their recent decisions over the past 2 seasons.

With the players drafted by the Bucs on the defensive line, including Vita Vea, the ends are better suited for a 4-3. Anomalies like Shaq Barrett, JPP and Von Miller were just helluva athletes

We lose these next 3-games, and the ‘REALITY’ is throughout the now 13-YEARS, without including the three “Brady Years,” THIS is a GM with a .399 career “Winning Percentage.” SUB 400. Responsible for 6-YEARS of the “LOST DECADE.” And, all while residing in the ‘all-time’ embarrassingly HORRIBLE, NFC SOUTH Division now, for the past 4+YEARS running. Again, as crazy old “John From St. Louis” would say… WAKE UP & SMELL THE COFFEE. Snap out of it! Unless, you are just ‘family’ or some very weird Fan Boi. The actual PROOF is in the pudding. I used to revel in calling Geraldini out back in the day—but credit where it’s due. He’s always had heart. He always played with effort. And he’s a straight shooter. Bravo 93 for saying it- that scheme, technique and coaching it all up really. matters. These guys are being asked to play in a system that reeks of repeated failures since Todd has been the HC. There’s no proof that it works consistently. Not a single morsel of evidence to show that it frees players up to use their gifts and play fast/aggressive football.

Seems to me Bucs are bringing walker along slowly. Hes coming back from a blown out knee. Honestly I appreciate them easing him back in. We’re going to need the defense to improve on there decent performance from Sunday if we want a chance to win. Shoot we might need a for points from the defense to help our stagnant offense.

Bowl was not fired due to the fact that the Glacier’s did not like the optics that would have occurred if they fired a black coach that had coached a team that made playoffs, numerous times (The Raise the Flags doc played into it as well).
