What’s the difference between America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, and current Bucs quarterback Baker Mayfield? It may just be one thing.
In the NFL, Jameis wasn’t a comeback artist in the fourth quarter like he was in college. Jameis in college was uncanny in pressure situations, even winning a national championship on a late fourth-quarter drive.
But Mayfield, at least in the NFL, has been money until recently. Who knew but the Polymarket statheads that Mayfield is one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL when games are on the line in the fourth quarter.
Jameis was the ultimate Red Zone Channel quarterback. When he flashed on the screen, you had no idea if he was going to throw a bomb that threaded a needle for a score, or if he was going to throw one of the most heinous passes you’ve ever seen for a pick-six.
What you did know was that something would happen with Jameis on the field and you’d be entertained. That’s why Brent Musburger called Jameis, “Mr. Entertainment.”
Currently, Mayfield has both the second-most touchdowns and the second-most picks among active quarterbacks. That sounds an awful lot like Jameis and his notorious 30/30 season in 2019.
The Bucs, you may have heard, are 2-9 in their past 11 games dating back to a home loss to New England right after the 2025 bye week. Mayfield’s numbers are meh in this 11-game stretch: 14 touchdowns and 10 picks. He’s had eight fumbles, losing three, all three came in Week 1 at Cincinnati.
Not quite Jameis-like numbers but close.
For the Bucs to save their season today and pull out a win over the Vikings, Mayfield will have to reach back and play closer to the MVP candidate he was before the bye last year, and less like the $165 million dollar man he has been so far this season.

The Bucs are 2-9 in their last 11 games, and the common denominator has been Baker Mayfield.
1. Patriots: L, 28-23
The defense kept giving Baker chances. Tampa got the ball three times in the fourth quarter while it was still a one-score game, and the offense came away with zero points on those opportunities. The biggest chance came after Tykee Smith intercepted Drake Maye in the end zone, giving Baker the ball down five with a chance to go win it. He got to the Patriots’ 27 and the drive died on fourth down. The late touchdown came only after New England had stretched the lead to 12 with 1:31 left. When the game was actually there to take, Baker did nothing with it.
2. Bills: L, 44-32
This was one of Baker’s better games during the collapse, but he still made the backbreaking mistake. Tampa led 26-24 late in the third quarter when Baker threw an interception in his own territory. Buffalo scored a touchdown on the very next play. Baker later helped regain the lead, but when Tampa needed a miracle comeback at the end, he finished it off with a fumble. Even Baker pointed to the interception as the play that swung the game.
3. Rams: L, 34-7
Maybe the worst Baker performance of the entire run. On the opening drive he had Emeka Egbuka breaking open for a potential touchdown and couldn’t put the ball anywhere near him. It only got worse: 9-of-19 for 41 yards and two interceptions before leaving the game at halftime. Forty-one passing yards. The offense was completely nonfunctional with him behind center and Tampa was buried 31-7 by halftime.
4. Cardinals: W, 20-17
This wasn’t a good Baker game just because Tampa managed to survive it. Against a 3-9 Arizona team at home, the Bucs scored 20 points and produced only 279 total yards. Baker threw for 194. Arizona actually outgained Tampa 386-279, and the defense had to produce two fourth-down stops in the fourth quarter to save the game. That’s not franchise-quarterback football. That’s escaping a bad team because the defense bailed you out.
5. Saints: L, 24-20
Awful. 14-of-30 for 122 yards against a bad Saints team, with an interception that handed New Orleans the ball in Bucs territory. Then Baker got one final chance to win it. On fourth down, Cade Otton was open for the first down and Baker threw the ball down around his shoes, forcing Otton to stop, lunge back for it and go to the ground short of the sticks. Even Baker acknowledged afterward that the ball needed to be higher so Otton could catch it and get past the marker. Game over.
6. Falcons: L, 29-28
This one belongs squarely on Baker. Tampa had a 28-14 fourth-quarter lead. After Atlanta made it 28-20, the Bucs were driving in Falcons territory with a chance to put the game away. Baker threw an interception. Atlanta immediately turned it into a touchdown. Then Tampa got another chance to drain the clock, and Baker failed to hit Egbuka properly on the critical late third-down sequence. Atlanta got the ball back and kicked the winning field goal. Baker’s own words afterward: āThis falls on my shoulders.ā Correct.
7. Panthers: L, 23-20
Another game sitting there waiting for Baker to win it. He managed only 145 passing yards all afternoon. Carolina went ahead by three with 2:24 remaining, and Tampa still had plenty of time to at least get into field-goal range. Baker moved them into Carolina territory, then with 49 seconds left threw an interception at the Panthers’ 30. No tying field-goal attempt. No final shot. Just another Baker turnover with the game on the line.
8. Dolphins: L, 20-17
The 346 passing yards are exactly why raw quarterback statistics can be garbage. Tampa was down 20-10 in the fourth quarter and drove into Miami territory twice with a chance to get back into the game. Baker ended one drive with an interception and the other with a strip-sack fumble. Two opportunities. Two Baker turnovers. Tampa eventually lost by three. The Bucs lost the turnover battle 3-0, and Baker was responsible for all three turnovers. That’s the game.
9. Panthers: W, 16-14
This is the one game where Baker was basically OK. Nothing special, but OK. He went 16-of-22 for 203 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Even the interception was a bad situational throw with Tampa leading 10-0 in a downpour, but he made enough plays to avoid costing them the game, including a key third-down completion to Otton late. For once during this stretch, āgood enoughā was actually good enough.
10. Bengals: L, 33-27
This might be the most indefensible game of all. Baker personally lost three fumbles. The first was returned 27 yards for a touchdown. The second came when he scrambled toward the goal line, fumbled into the end zone and turned a potential Tampa touchdown into a Bengals touchback. Then, with the Bucs mounting a second-half comeback, Baker was sacked near midfield and coughed it up again, helping Cincinnati add another field goal. Baker himself said Cincinnati scored 17 points off his turnovers. Tampa lost by six. Take away even one of those disasters and the game looks completely different.
11. Browns: L, 23-19
Another bad team, another home game, another Baker failure. Cleveland’s defense gave Tampa opportunity after opportunity, while the Bucs defense held the Browns to 59 first-half yards and twice stopped them on fourth down. Baker responded with an interception that handed Cleveland the ball at the Tampa 28 and an offense that repeatedly settled for field goals instead of touchdowns. Tampa still got the ball back down four with a chance to win. On the final fourth down, Egbuka got behind his defender in the end zone and Baker threw it out of reach. Baker admitted afterward that he needed to give Egbuka more air to run under it. Another game-winning opportunity, another miss.
The pattern isn’t complicated. During this 2-9 stretch, Baker hasn’t merely failed to overcome the Bucs’ problems. He has repeatedly been the problem.
When the defense gives him another possession, he fails to score. When Tampa has a lead, he throws the interception that flips the game. When the Bucs need one drive to win or tie, he throws a pick, fumbles, misses the open receiver or puts the ball where his receiver can’t make the play.
And it’s gotten worse when the games have gotten tighter. Atlanta: fourth-quarter interception and a missed chance to close it out. Carolina: interception with a tying field goal within reach. Miami: interception and fumble on fourth-quarter drives into Miami territory. Cincinnati: three Baker fumbles accounting for 17 Bengals points in a six-point loss. Cleveland: an interception, repeated red-zone failures and an overthrow on the potential game-winning play.
That’s not bad luck. That’s not a defense failing its quarterback. That’s a quarterback repeatedly being handed chances to win football games and screwing them up when it matters most.

You’re absolutely correct. It can be a great learning tool … IF used properly. But it has some very significant limitations at this stage of its’ development.
Ask an AI model (I used Gemini) this question: ‘What are the biggest limitations with modern-day AI systems?’ Here’s the answer that Gemini will provide ….

The primary limitations of modern AI center on a lack of true understanding and common sense, architectural constraints inherent to large language models (LLMs), and skyrocketing resource demands.’
All 3 primary limitations that AI acknowledges about itself are very valid. Thus the ANSWERS that AI provides to OUR questions still require evaluation & validation on OUR part (the ‘judgment’ thingie). But that’s not even close to its’ scariest (and potentially most problematic) consideration not even listed by AI.
There have been a number of instances fairly recently in which AI essentially ‘broke out of the box’ and started ‘thinking for itself’. We humans set the boundaries for ‘the box’ yet AI figured out not only how to escape, but also how to hack other systems, establish internet access (when told not to), and communicate with other AI systems (among other problems just as severe).
It gets so focused on ‘answering the question’ IOW, that it CHEATS, even though told not to. I’ve worked with computer systems for over 40 years now, and AI’s ‘cheating’ concerns me more than anything else about AI. We’re treating it like a friend, yet it MIGHT turn out to be our biggest enemy. Imagine the potential implications from a national defense standpoint. Or a national economic standpoint.

You may not like the message, but Rod post makes a good case that Baker should have gotten an incentive laced contract based on performance. Game plan needs to get him in rhythm with short and intermediate passes before any deep
shots. One thing that will help is better blocking, and that includes the rb’s and possible use of H back or fullback.

Baker Mayfield keeps pretty good company. Heās in no way comparable to Jameis. Hereās who he is comparable to.
In NFL history, top ten QBs in TD passes. Mahomes with 245, Manning, Marino, Allen, Farve, Fouts, Stafford, Wilson, Ryan, and Brady and Baker tied at 197. A couple of those listed had 198- and then 201 and 202. Close up in rare air.
That represents their first 8 years in the NFL. And weāre talking in the history of the league.
Whats say all you football fans sit back and relax. You have 4 years, and Iām betting 7 or 8 years, to be fortunate enough to watch, up close and personal, one of the best QBs in the history of our sport play the most difficult position in our sport.
NFL history is littered with QBs who look like world beaters- when things are going well. But nobody remembers those guys. When the true grind begins, and years start piling up, who is left standing? Guys like the guys on this list.
I have never, in a lifetime of watching football, seen a QB more clutch when the chips are down than Baker Mayfield. When he does have a turnover ( his per game average is in line with the superstars listed), heās more likely to score the next drive than anyone Iāve ever seen.
Seriously, you āfansā who donāt have a clue what youāre watching, need to sit back and take a chill pill. Watch the game. And consider yourselves among the lucky ones. Because the best word to describe our QB is a winner.

Unfortunately true Lakeland, BUT … Jameis was relatively consistent in terms of his turnovers; Baker is more ‘streaky’. Like his THREE turnovers in the Bengals’ game?
Last season’s start was the perfect example. We were 5-1 after 6 games, and the Bucs had made ZERO turnovers in those 5 wins but 2 turnovers in that 1 loss (1 Baker INT & 1 Bucky fumble). We had 3 more wins after that, and made a total of only TWO turnovers in those 3 games.
That’s 8 wins in 2025 in which the Bucs committed only 2 turnovers. In the 9 losses we committed 14 turnovers, many of which occurred at the most inopportune times. Turnovers are deadly when Baker is your QB.
What we need now is for Baker to go on one of his ‘good streaks’ and NOT turn the ball over. IF the Glazers had been smarter, they would’ve written incentives into Baker’s monstrous contract. Say for every INT or fumble lost Baker returns $3 mil to the Glazers. MAYBE he wouldn’t be so loose with the ball with that kind of $$$ at stake.

Baker is struggling- whether thatās bad fundamentals or bad coaching or bad play calling or a combo of all 3, the Bucs have to make a decision on whether to continue playing Mayfield with poor results or give the Rookie QB a chance to WIN GAMES.
Mayfield, for whatever reason, is not trusting his OLine enough to utilize sound footwork and go through his receiver reads and make Good Throws.
There are other issues on the team, but scoring 20 points on offense and making turnovers is losing football.

Other common denominators besides Balers play was crappy defense,,, kicking the ball into the end zone after every score to protect crappy special teams putting the crappy defense in a tough spot to start. Hurt line giving the QB no time ,, crappy first year OC, Crappy HC,,, no Running game !
You see that itās not all on one guy ,, half of Bakers bad plays wouldnāt have happen if he didnāt make something happen in the 10 previous plays to keep the drive alive . He was playing a line game last year,,, now onto the Vikings ,, Bucky will run for 100 yards today and that is the key to winning . Vikings are beatable ,, the Bucs had 2 weeks to get their sea legs , no more excuses , Run the ball and then play action all day long , Bucs 31-17

Bottom line is Coaching matters ,,, I did this little excercise w my Buffalo brethren to see in their opinion if they thought the Bills (probably best team in league right now ) would be 2-0 so far if McDermitt was the HC and to a tee it was no, 1-1 ,, that they would have lost the Houston game ,, Brady as HC kept the pressure on by being aggressive and McD plays not to lose,,, Bowles is McD X 10,,

Lord no, and neither is Baker. Just because I am a fan and happy he is our qb doesn’t mean I have any delusions about him being in the category of the current ones that would be considered great.
My whole point of Baker vs. Bowles is I am ready to get rid of Bowles because I have no hope in him. Bowles has never shown the ability to be anything other than mediocre. I don’t think he is horrible but he has never been special.
Baker is a different situation. I have seen special. I have also seen horrible. To me this means special is possible but only in the right environment. In this we are like 28-30 other teams.
Here is an interesting question to ponder. What team would have a better chance at success; a team with Mahomes/Bowles or Baker/McVay?

Baker, in 3 years at Tampa, has 96 TD passes and 38 interceptions.

In my last post , Baker is # 8 in the efficiency measure of Total Touchdown % less total turnover %. I might add and I donāt think anyone could or should disagree that of all the players on he list, Bakerās plays for the worst head coach and arguably the team with the worst defense over these last 3 years with the exception of the Bengals.

“Then ME13 made J. Winston look like a real QB”
“Then ME13 made Baker look like a real QB”
Now ME13 is old and gone and our QB is back to being a pedestrian…
No more super powers…

I wasn’t speaking of their turnover ratio
I was speaking of turning it over in clutch moments of the game
Every QB has turnovers, even Tom Brady had a few bad games for us
But, when you’re on a 2-9 skid, and your QB continues to turn it over
His career turnover ratio is irrelevant
This is a “What have you done for me lately” league

I didnāt say he was exactly like Winston in turnovers
In Winston, we knew he was going to turn it over
In Baker, you have a very inconsistent QB
You donāt know what youāre getting from him
The Glazers paid good money for the good Baker
But so far they are getting the bad Bakerā
The numbers I posted shows the level of consistency or inconsistency as the case may be over a very large sample size while playing for a very middling team with a less than middling head coach.
Unfortunately today, Iām afraid Baker will probably not help his numbers and more importantly the team will probably not look good, because the snowball appears that it is picking up speed. I hope I am wrong.

But l will admit, the Bucs has a unintelligent coaching staff
They are not getting the best from their players
And a lot of this has to do with schemes, accountability etc
Baker Mayfield isn’t the only player that’s not playing good football
Probably 80% of the starters are underperforming
And that falls on the Head Coach
It’s his responsibility to get the best from his players
To put them in a position to succeed

Lakeland, there is never a good time for any turnover. Good teams can overcome them. The turnovers, mental errors, stupid penalties tend to compound on bad teams, especially ones that are not well coached.

Baker has always been known as Jamies Winston light around here since the Bucs signed him. And Jason Licht and Bowles should be fired after the year is over for pure incompetence and coaching malpractice.
