“Bro, You’re Not Josh Allen”
September 16th, 2026
What was Baker Mayfield doing Sunday, protecting the football like he’s working on his Jameis Winston impression?
Joe can only assume Mayfield was overly amped up and his typical thoughts of fundamentals evaporated temporarily.
Joe watched Mayfield’s three fumbles and thought about new Bucs quarterbacks coach Chandler Whitmer, who Mayfield has said many times coaches him hard and is a stickler for details. Whitmer must have lost his mind.
Another guy who sort of lost his mind, assuming it wasn’t gone already, is Hall of Fame tight end Shannon Sharpe. On his Nightcap podcast, Sharpe didn’t want to hear noise about the Bengals playing well. He put the Bucs loss — and the Bengals win — squarely on Mayfield.
“Bro, what are you doing? Bro, you’re not Josh Allen? You’re not!” Sharp screamed about Mayfield. “You know what irks me, when a guy makes a mistake and looks up at the JumboTron. You effed up. You don’t need to look up and see it; you did it!”
Sharpe ranted on about Mayfield for even acknowledging and answering a Sunday postgame question about headset issues. He was adamant that Mayfield’s many mistakes had nothing to do with his headset.
Joe expects Mayfield to clean up his ball security mistakes seen on Sunday, though Joe is concerned Mayfield has a little too much trust in Tristan Wirfs blocking his blind side, which can lead Mayfield to hold the ball too long.
Joe gets the extreme faith, but maybe it’s time to dial that back a half-second.

Josh Allen thew 2 picks and fumbled 3x losing two turning the ball over a total of 4x in the AFC Divisional round 8 months ago.
September 16th, 2026 at 10:21 am
Josh has some head scratching plays too in his bag. These guys are trying to do whatever it takes to win. Just can’t be so reckless. Go Bucs!
September 16th, 2026 at 10:27 am
i agree with Shannon
Baker aint Josh Allen and he still has yet to hold himself accountable….
remember folks, baker led the NFL in INTs AND Fumbles in 2024…we’ve seen this carelessness before!!!!!
GO BUCS!!!!!
September 16th, 2026 at 10:34 am
I believe BM is a mediocre QB.
Nothing wrong with that.
Sam Darnold won a SB with Seattle last year – look up mediocre NFL QB and Sam’s face will pop up on your screen…
HOWEVER – BM is only as good as his supporting cast.
He needs a better running game, better O-line, better WR play and a better TE.
It appears our “ROH” GM has a ton of work to do before we get to the SB with BM.
September 16th, 2026 at 10:38 am
One game… 16 regular season games to play!! Clean it up BM6 and win many games!!
September 16th, 2026 at 10:40 am
Bengals blitzed less than any team Sunday. Yet Mayfield was the 9th most pressured QB.
That means that The Bengals were pressuring Mayfield, while still having their full coverage package.
That means our line can’t block. Worst rated line week one. Only Goedeke played well.
We blitzed more than most teams, yet Burrow was the least Pressured QB in the league this week.
That means we can’t rush the QB, even when we blitz frequently.
We can’t block for our QB. We can’t rush their QB.
That means we suck.
September 16th, 2026 at 10:43 am
No excuses but the headset does affect. If it takes him too long to get the play in then he has less time to make the pre snap reads, which limits the time to make checks.
SS should know that.
Rest is spot on. Get the mental block going
September 16th, 2026 at 10:47 am
“Joe expects Mayfield to clean up his ball security mistakes seen on Sunday, though Joe is concerned Mayfield has a little too much trust in Tristan Wirfs blocking his blind side, which can lead Mayfield to hold the ball too long.”
No it’s not Tristan Wirfs or anybody on the OL making Baker hold the ball too long, but rather Baker making Wirfs and the OL look worse when he holds the ball too long because if you can hold the ball for >3 seconds you’re being protected pretty well. What you’re struggling with is making the decision.
Useless pump fakes that don’t manipulate coverage, reacting to pressure just off the anticipation forces him to drop his eyes too early, which throws off timing even if he can get the ball out and lord lord lord that footwork is atrocious. If the decision isn’t made by time he hits his back foot in his drop, it’s first read then check down or “other”.
I keep telling ya’ll Canales & Coen had success with this guy in part because they learned to protect their scheme from his bad habits, has nothing to do with what he does “best” and more about how to get the most out of him without provoking his “worst” which will rear it’s head as long as he’s playing football.
Argue with ya’lls mamas, this is the truth of the matter in regards to Baker Mayfield as a QB and acknowledging that doesn’t make anybody more/less of a fan of this team.
September 16th, 2026 at 10:54 am
WBL
PREACH!!!!!!!
GO BUCS!!!!!
September 16th, 2026 at 10:59 am
Joe also had extreme faith Mike Evans was a Buc for life.
Now ME has a REAL franchise QB and beat the alleged SB favorite in Australia.
$165 million down the crapper. Mayfield is a complete bust for that contract rate.
Keep fighting for those limitations sir. Bowles and Baker shall provide.
#ClownCar. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡
September 16th, 2026 at 11:07 am
Mayfield acknowledges his fumble mistakes but keeping on doing them. Management believes in him but he keeps making the same mistakes. Something has to give here but it won’t be Management. Mayfield either corrects it or he gets shipped back to Cleveland were he belongs.
September 16th, 2026 at 11:15 am
@ Marine Buc Says: “It appears our “ROH” GM has a ton of work to do before we get to the SB with BM.”
He has handed-out A LOT of money over these last two seasons. Mostly, all to much OLDER players too, who are on their DECLINES, and looking for big paydays. It is THE ‘recipe’ for disaster and then total collapse.
September 16th, 2026 at 11:16 am
Baker is average with far too many turnovers. The problem is that now we pay him like he is great. There is no way to overcome that. He will HAVE to do more with less because of his salary. This will just lead to continued turnovers. We are going to be mediocre for a long time.
September 16th, 2026 at 11:17 am
“ his typical thoughts of fundamentals evaporated temporarily.”. The guy has TERRIBLE fundamentals and footwork. This is who he is. And clearly this HC and staff lack the ability to coach him hard enough or properly enough to force him to be better. It is what it is. We will have to just muddle through another couple years of erratic QB play at very high cost until the front office realizes their mistake.
September 16th, 2026 at 11:17 am
WBL… the OL got worked on Sunday.
I wouldn’t even scramble outta the pocket this week if I was Baker. I wouldn’t even scramble just dirt it everytime I feel pressure and take care of the ball that way.
I’m not saying the fumbles are acceptable and I’ve already said numerous times that Baker cost the game so I am not arguing that. However, he was under pressure a lot! He wasn’t standing in the pocket tapping the ball for 4 seconds he was trying to make something happen.
Credit to Cincy for not giving up on plays, chasing down Baker from behind and abusing Wirfs and company.
September 16th, 2026 at 11:27 am
@ Marine Buc Says: “I believe BM is a mediocre QB.
Nothing wrong with that.
Sam Darnold won a SB with Seattle last year – look up mediocre NFL QB and Sam’s face will pop up on your screen…”
That’s True. BUT, Sam was going to beat-out Baker for the starting job in Carolina, if not for a severely sprained ankle. As soon as that ankle was all healed-up, he immediately replaced Baker… And, then Baker was promptly, RELEASED. The rest is history, and now WE’RE STUCK. Great article written by Jimmy Watkins on Cleveland dot com.
September 16th, 2026 at 11:27 am
All issues start at the top. The Bucs need a new head coach. It is plain and simple.
They should have fired the coach last year and hired Harbaugh.
September 16th, 2026 at 11:29 am
He needs to be
Drew Brees !
September 16th, 2026 at 11:30 am
I cannot understand the Joes infatuation with Baker. Somehow he positively spinned one of Baker’s fumble to trusting Wirfs too much. I get it but I think of it this way. Brady elevated his Offensive line. Baker makes his look bad by “trusting” too much.
September 16th, 2026 at 11:33 am
Josh allen is a overrated goof that guy will never get a ring
September 16th, 2026 at 11:37 am
“WBL… the OL got worked on Sunday.”
Baker made them look worse. Tends to happen when QBs hold the ball. In fact was one of the biggest criticisms from the start of his NFL journey in Cleveland was his tendency to hold the ball too long which is connected to the tendency to stare down a particular look. How long are our OL supposed to block >4/5 seconds?
“However, he was under pressure a lot! He wasn’t standing in the pocket tapping the ball for 4 seconds he was trying to make something happen.”
Average time to throw was 3.03 seconds. Go look at his splits on pro football ref for his career, and you’ll see his performance value falls off a cliff between his production at 2.5 seconds to throw. You can look year by year too, it doesn’t fluctuate much meaning it’s a Baker Mayfield problem that came with him to TB along with the moxy and yada, yada, yada.
September 16th, 2026 at 11:37 am
O line was terrible Sunday leading to Mayfield scrambles in turn fumbles. Why not just admit that the O line was bad Sunday?
September 16th, 2026 at 11:39 am
As myself and others have pointed out… great example of 4 turnovers outta Allen less than a year ago up there in an important game.
Maye 3 picks, Burrow pick 6, Darnold and Stafford 3 picks each in a division deciding contest last season.
It happens people! What those other teams have are either good defenses to not allow each turnover to turn into points or coaches who don’t pee their pants after turnovers and keep faith in their guys to keep the pedal down.
September 16th, 2026 at 11:40 am
I think is not wise to predict the Mayfield will suddenly clean up his turnovers. He leads the NFL in turnovers since being drafted. This is who he has been in the NFL for the past 8 seasons
September 16th, 2026 at 11:41 am
After a turnover in Bucs territory, we should try just letting them score next play to preserve as much clock as possible for the comeback. Better they have 7 after 10 seconds instead of 4-5 minutes.
September 16th, 2026 at 11:41 am
@Gipper the O-Line had the 8th best pressure rate week 1. You just never blame Baker for anything. There’s always an excuse
September 16th, 2026 at 11:45 am
over the last 3 seasons josh allen only has two less total turnovers than baker mayfield. how come people ain’t killing him for being a turnover prone qb. hell i watched peyton manning throw 6 interceptions in one game and he didn’t get the hate baker is getting.
September 16th, 2026 at 11:47 am
Jayden Daniels had the longest time to throw of any QB in week 1 with an avg of 3.41s
Lamar Jackson was 2nd w/a 3.16s avg time to throw
Jalen Hurts was 3rd w/a 3.14s avg time to throw
Geno Smith was 4th w/a 3.04s avg time to throw
Guess who was 5th
Also, Joe Burrow had the quickest avg release time of any QB that played week 1.
So the “yea buts” on trying to take how trash our offense was and putting it on the shoulders of our defense makes it make less sense, but sure salute to Cincy not giving up and taking advantage of Baker babysitting and ruining the “tegrity” of his own pockets.
When you’re pressured 8-9 times and you average holding the ball 4.3 seconds(!!!) you’re making life harder for your OL and those guys don’t have eyes in the back of their heads.
September 16th, 2026 at 11:47 am
@ Gipper – Even, IF that BS you just spewed again were true, & it’s NOT… Your #1-Goal at all times, is to PROTECT. THE. BALL. Period. No matter WHAT. Especially, when you are the fricken Quarterback, and supposed “leader” of the team. End of Story.
September 16th, 2026 at 11:55 am
Warren Brooks Lynch: Baker Mayfield co-led the league in inerceptions and fumbles in 2024. Liam Coen was his OC in 2024.
September 16th, 2026 at 11:59 am
Classic week 1 overreactions, came within one score with 4 total fumbles. Josh Allen has bad games; Mahomes has bad games. The Baker from weeks 1-6 last year is there just might take some time to get things clicking.
September 16th, 2026 at 12:01 pm
Well he’s getting paid like it
September 16th, 2026 at 12:04 pm
Chad. Please in the first 5 years in Payton Manning career he had the same numbers as Jamies had in his first 5 years. But the argument is Payton won and lead his to the second round playoffs and Manning had 2 hall of fame runningbacks that played with him . And Jamies still gets talk about being a bad quarterback. So you can’t move the goal post when it’s a quarterback you like. No judge them all the same so the same way Jamies didn’t get the injury excuses even though he said he was injured and shouldn’t have been playing in 2018 on the bucs documentary you have to treat Baker the way. And that goes for every body stop with the injury excuses no running game excuses the coaches fault excuses for Baker. He got his money so he has to put up or shut up. That’s that same junk people were saying about Brady when AB and Gornk left and he had the same team and we went 8-9 and BL was the scapegoat. Baker will bounce back this game against Cleveland but I want to see it against good teams. No more excuses go bucs!!!
September 16th, 2026 at 12:22 pm
I rewatched the game on YouTube. I was encouraged. The play calling was Liam-esque. The bootlegs and swing passes were effective. Baker passes were timely. Both running backs looked good . Special teams greatly improved. Once front seven finds the right personnel combo , I believe this team is going to be fine .
September 16th, 2026 at 12:29 pm
1st and 2nd down turnovers are mostly unacceptable unless pressing to make magic in two minute warning or fourth quarter. QBs that refuse to take a sack or throw the ball away drive me nuts and are selfish. I like Baker, but he just refuses to learn situational football and what stage of the game he is in. He is not the only QB that does not understand these simple concepts of winning football.
September 16th, 2026 at 12:39 pm
@ chad says: “how come people ain’t killing him for being a turnover prone qb.”
Josh Allen does get “killed” for it. PLENTY. The difference is that everyone can SEE that he is an ‘all-time’ GREAT Quarterback. I mean, comparing HIM to BAKER is just delusional. They are not one of the same. Josh is obviously an ELITE QB in the league, and you can just ‘see-it’ immediately. HIS pros farrrr outweigh his cons. It’s just a totally different deal. But, that’s WHY.
September 16th, 2026 at 12:42 pm
If the opposing Edge Rusher doesn’t get to Mayfield for a solid 5-sec, Wirfs did his job.
Bake needs to be more decisive with the ball and if nobody is ‘open’, throw it to Hurst. He’ll catch it anyway.
September 16th, 2026 at 12:46 pm
NO the Oline was not bad. The Oline gave Baker 3.03 seconds to throw. The NFL average is 2.80 so our Oline gave Baker an extra 1/4 second to throw , which is an eternity. So STOP blaming the Oline and put the blame squarely where it belongs-On Baker Mayfield.

“remember folks, baker led the NFL in INTs AND Fumbles in 2024”
As long as The kiddies keep bringing this up like its some killer fact I am going to post the context and missing data
Josh (and a pile of other Qbs) had 4 less fumbles FOR THE YEAR. So thats one more than Allen EVERY FOUR GAMES for Baker
Worse (for the kiddies points) only a third of those 4 were lost fumbles thus NOT TOs.
Same thing with ints. The difference between “leads the league” and out of the top ten can be one pick more than the other Every THREE GAMES.
rarely does this mean anything going forward ( which is why sensible people go by ratios)
Sunday was near bone headed by Mayfield and so you are unlikely to see anything like it again. He clearly thought he had time he didn’t and shouldn’t have even dreamed. The worse one was the one he scrambled a little bit and then thought he had enough time to plant and wind up.
that was dumb and yes he singlehandedly lost the last game but stats without context is for nits.
September 16th, 2026 at 1:00 pm

September 16th, 2026 at 1:10 pm
Maybe Mayfield can look back at the Tom Brady tapes when he was with the Bucs. Brady almost always got the ball out quickly. I think he knew where he was going with the ball at the line of scrimmage before the snap. Taking a sack or throwing the ball away is not a bad thing. Give your offensive lineman a chance and get rid of the ball on time.
September 16th, 2026 at 1:12 pm
What Shannon Sharpe is saying
Josh Allen is a big bruising QB
And Baker Mayfield is more of a Pip Squeak QB
Baker Mayfield is too slow, and too small for these defenders
If he was small and swifty, fast, he would be alright
And then he tries to run right up the gut
Holding the ball like a loaf of bread
And big edge rushers, ILBs feast on him
September 16th, 2026 at 1:16 pm
well if there’s any truth at all to the headsets not working the majority of the game which baker switched helmets 2 different times and were with in a second of a delay of game penalty almost every down, then that could have something to do with it. but regardless bakers fumbles are the reason bucs lost, i expect him to be much better with the ball going forward
September 16th, 2026 at 1:16 pm
“Sunday was near bone headed by Mayfield and so you are unlikely to see anything like it again.”
At least 3 times in his time as a Buc he’s had 3 turnovers in 1 game
@NO & @LV in 2024
Vs. Miami last year
@Cincy this year
He’s got something like 30+ games in his career with 2/more turnovers credited to him in varying ways as its a mix of picks in INTs
In 31 games of 51 total games played for us and he’s turned the ball over 45 times in those 31 games. Before you ask, that’s about 59% of games he’s played as a Buc where he’s committed at least 1 turnover. We’re 12-19 in those games.

What happened to you. You were occasionally worth reading before you became another troll bro. You used to comment on the whiny negativity but now you mainly just add to it.
Anybody who thinks we can’t win with Baker, or Todd, or Zac needs to move along – you’re not going to petition the owners to cut any of them lose.
September 16th, 2026 at 1:28 pm
Guys, when Baker gets healthy, he’ll be fine.
He just has to get healthy.
September 16th, 2026 at 1:30 pm
Haha WBL… nice numbers. Where was Baker when he was holding the ball? Did he teleport outside the right hash so it took no time?
No one is arguing Baker blew it with the fumbles, but it takes time to run when you are avoiding pressure which he had to do for most of the game.
I don’t need advanced stats… I watched the game. Bucs OL got worked, period. Baker made them get pushed back and straight up beat for sacks? No, they were bad.
On the other side, Burrow stood there clean for 4 seconds anytime he saw a 4 man rush.
September 16th, 2026 at 1:36 pm
Baker couldn’t even hold Josh Allen jock strap he would probably fumble that also lol. He is no Josh Allen but he is getting paid like he is.
September 16th, 2026 at 1:41 pm
“Haha WBL… nice numbers. Where was Baker when he was holding the ball? Did he teleport outside the right hash so it took no time?”
Compromising the integrity of the pockets the OL set up for him, by burning daylight holding the ball and processing like he’s a dial up QB.
Of course you don’t need advanced stats, and I have no need to talk detail with someone willing to ignore it for the sake of making an argument because that’s kind of ignorant.

Guys, I can settle this. I think we can all agree that Baker is vastly superior to Allen… when he’s healthy.
But gosh darn it, he just hasn’t been healthy for almost a year now.
But you wait, when Baker is healthy, he’s the MVP, the real GOAT!

Marine buc … ‘BM is only as good as his supporting cast. He needs a better running game, better O-line, better WR play and a better TE’.
Agree totally that Baker is only as good as the team around him. But how would that have kept him from fumbling THREE times Sunday? The ball was in HIS hands, not theirs.

Mr Mid QB is worthless with the game on the line.

That contract guarantees failure for its entirety.
No SB will be in our near future. Bowles+Baker= negative 000
September 16th, 2026 at 3:50 pm
The oline wasn’t great, but Baker holds the ball way too long and gets happy feet too often in clean pockets.
The fumbles need to stop.
Baker is at his best when he drops back, hits his back foot and lets it rip. Sure, he can make the occasional scramble to extend drives, but that needs to be done as needed, not every other play.
Lots of individually bad performances on Sunday, but is it wrong to expect more from your veteran QB who is being paid to play like a top 10 QB?
Some with make excuses for Baker no matter what. I saw it with Vinny, Dilfer, Freeman and Winston. Also someone else to blame.
