Todd Bowles And The Playoffs
August 31st, 2026
Needs a playoff win?
Joe is neither a statgeek nor is a statophobe. Stats can be quite useful and enlightening. They can also be quite deceiving.
Joe tries to put stats in perspective.
Stathead Sam Hoppen, a data scientist for the gambling wing of BSPN, had an interesting element to his breakdown on the 2026 Bucs: Hoppen thinks KitKat-eating Bucs coach Todd Bowles needs a playoff win to continue his reign as head coach into 2027.
Successful season: win a playoff game
I’m not saying that I think this is likely, but it has to be the bar for Tampa Bay at this point. They’ve won the division in three of the four years under Bowles (and lost it on a tiebreaker last year). Yet, they only have one playoff win to show for it. Tampa Bay mindbogglingly kept Bowles around for another year, so more than just winning the division has to be the bar for success.
Sooner or later, doesn’t Bowles have to start racking up playoff wins?
For example, Joe doesn’t think anyone would suggest Father Dungy was a rotten coach. He rebuilt the Bucs from a total joke into a Super Bowl contender and consistent playoff team. Still, after the Bucs lost to the Rams in the 1999 NFC title game, Father Dungy never won another playoff game for the Bucs. Two years in a row the Bucs got bounced in the first round by the Eagles.
Team Glazer had seen enough. And in came Chucky. We all know what happened next.
Bowles isn’t far from that Dungy territory. Bowles and the Bucs won a playoff game in 2023. They haven’t won one since, despite two division titles. Bowles is 1-3 in the postseason and the list of NFL coaches that went 1-4 in the postseason would sour any fan’s dreams.
Joe thinks Bowles must win the NFC South this fall for job security. Bowles may need a playoff win, too.

Wildcard is not playoffs
Getting into the NFC Championship Game is the only acceptable answer
August 31st, 2026 at 8:29 am
Sooner or later this team needs to stop having long losing streaks! This just doesn’t happen to good organizations.
August 31st, 2026 at 8:35 am
Every team wants to win playoff games
It’s easier said than done, there’s more than coaching involved
After 17 hard fought games during the season
The healthiest teams usually wins during the postseason

“Tampa Bay mindbogglingly kept Bowles around for another year”
I’ve said this very thing probably 100 times on this blog. Perhaps now the Pom Pom squad can wake up from their cake eating contest and see Bowles for what he really is.
A loser and complete failure as a HC. A DC that can’t coach defense anymore.
But I’m sure they’ll continue throwing KitKats at their dear leaders feet.
August 31st, 2026 at 8:39 am
8-9 or 9-8 because Bowles is completely incapable of not being .500. The only question is whether that’s good enough to win the NFC Dumpster Fire Division again.
After that, it’ll be another early exit from the playoffs. If the Bucs have proven anything over the last several years, it’s that winning the division is akin to being the last turd in the toilet to get flushed. That one floater keeps coming back until it, too, gets flushed.
August 31st, 2026 at 8:43 am
The Bucs can still win this GARBAGE NFC South with only 7 wins…
That’s how horrid this Division is.
7 wins can still win the NFC South.
August 31st, 2026 at 8:43 am
BSPN ranks Todd Bowles 28/32 as an NFL head coach for reasons.
August 31st, 2026 at 8:46 am
and…. We need another season to see how incapable Todd Bowels is to coach his team above the minimum level of performance
Todd bless his heart
Is all textbook coaching and zero adjust , motivate, adjust, perform under fire in a nutshell
He NEVER should have been handed this team for another year.
August 31st, 2026 at 8:48 am
As of now, the team is healthy. The OC & defense have improved now we’ll see if Todd can put it together for a full season. Here’s to hoping everyone stays relatively healthy so we can see what this team is capable of under Bowles.
August 31st, 2026 at 8:48 am
Sooner, or later doesn’t Licht get some blame? If Bowles gets fired Licht should too. Need a new set of eyes on this roster. Licht thinks he’s a draft master, and has the best scouts in the NFL. The proof is in the pudding. Better make a playoff run, no excuses, or outinzee.
August 31st, 2026 at 8:54 am
Jason Licht has been the Bucs GM for 12 seasons
And we still have an inferior NFL roster
Rich McKay was the GM for 10 seasons
And we had one of most talented roster in the NFL
Rich McKay was an amazing talent evaluator,
August 31st, 2026 at 8:59 am
Bowles & the playoffs in the same category? If we do make it I doubt we get passed the first game.
August 31st, 2026 at 9:01 am
Hodad
Jason and Todd have a mutual agreement to ignore the performance of each other while they both blow smoke up the gBoyz collective butts , protecting their paychecks for another year.
Fans are left holding the empty bag
August 31st, 2026 at 9:09 am
WHY in the heck are you implying any sort of results when you don’t know who will be on the injury list after four weeks……..this team is THIN in many places, a couple of injuries and you’re struggling.
August 31st, 2026 at 9:17 am
Rich McKay would be at the front of the line for a Buccaneer GM to be enshrined into the ROH-Heck McKays’ 1st two draft picks were HOF’ers-No other GM can say that.
August 31st, 2026 at 9:18 am
Playoffs? PLAYOFFS!?- Jim Mora. Playoffs hard to do with a .500 coach.
August 31st, 2026 at 9:26 am
The guy should not have been handed the HC job in 2022, and sure as heck shouldn’t still be here in 2026. There is a major stench coming from the Glazers estate; why have they kept him around?
August 31st, 2026 at 9:42 am
@Hodad,
Amen brother. Complete housecleaning. If it goes bad it will be the outinzee tour. Loved that description.
August 31st, 2026 at 9:43 am
I haven’t had a good moderation in a while. Thanks Joe.
August 31st, 2026 at 9:54 am
Cosmo Kramer acting like he has been here.
You know he hasn’t with that comment.
Literally everyone said the same thing, including the Joes.
Pom Pom squad? Not true.
August 31st, 2026 at 9:54 am
The Buccaneers were a wildcard when they last won the Superbowl. Bowles defense completely shut down Maholmes. Won all their playoff games on the road.
August 31st, 2026 at 9:55 am
Dungy was a much better head coach than BowlesThose Eagle team’s head e lost to were far superior the the Cowboys and Commanders that Bowles lost to.
August 31st, 2026 at 10:00 am
Buddha
I had the winning lottery numbers but was just a week off
August 31st, 2026 at 10:13 am
Once the Bucs make the playoffs, I have the utmost confidence that Bowles will find a way to snatch defeat out of the jaws of victory. He did that against the Commanders!
August 31st, 2026 at 10:14 am
In case any of you as a noticed, Todd is the coach for this year, need to focus on something new
August 31st, 2026 at 10:19 am
The only stat that matters is the W’s.
Todd is allergic to those types of stats.
He prefers to lose his way, blame everyone else, storm out, declare victory.
All hail the conquering idiot!!!
August 31st, 2026 at 10:43 am
The Glazers have shown that they love Bowles more than they care about winning football games. Last year told us that. Why would they expect him to win games now?
August 31st, 2026 at 10:45 am
Joe, Do you think the Bucs will go after Will Levis as a backup QB or do you think he would want to be a starter somewhere?
August 31st, 2026 at 10:47 am
Agreed
August 31st, 2026 at 10:53 am
5 months and counting until the Todd Blows experiment is OVER
August 31st, 2026 at 10:53 am
“ He prefers to lose his way, blame everyone else, storm out, declare victory.
All hail the conquering idiot!!!”
Man, that sounds familiar.
August 31st, 2026 at 10:54 am
I would bring back Kyle Trask before l even look at Will Levis
Will Levis was giving every shot as a starter, and he flunk them all
Some team will pick him up
But l hope it’s not the Bucs
August 31st, 2026 at 10:55 am
Before you get any false hope of the Bucs having a pass rush improving the secondary, remember the Bucs had a 20 sack guy in 2019 and the pass defense got shredded still.
Todd’s scheme is allergic to defending the forward pass.
August 31st, 2026 at 10:57 am
Playoffs? This team and coach? Please fire up the Jim Mora clip so we can all laugh. Unless a a six win team can make the playoffs
August 31st, 2026 at 11:07 am
Jason and Todd are TIED together at this point. The next big name will bring in his own GM or will have input on who the GM will be…Licht will never be in the Ring of Honor. Ever.
August 31st, 2026 at 11:10 am
They need to have a ferocious defense for Bowles to coach next year. If the defense is shaky but a high powered offense carries them to Super Bowl glory, Robinson is the coach in 2027, I bet. If both sides are shaky, time to clean house.
August 31st, 2026 at 11:14 am
I give TB 0% chance for next year. JL 2%!
August 31st, 2026 at 11:14 am
I would like to respectfully ask that the Joe’s find a way to add the word “mindbogglingly to Bowles KitKat Eating title.
August 31st, 2026 at 11:17 am
this will be a 2-15 season
August 31st, 2026 at 11:17 am
The stuff I read in here in comical.
‘Wildcard isnt the playoffs’…say what??? Ridiculous
“7-10 can win the division”..even dumber.
August 31st, 2026 at 11:20 am
There is no answer as long as Bowles is HC/DC. Maybe they scratch and dig and win the division, but this team isn’t going much further. It is what it is, now it’s time to see how the decision to keep Bowles and Licht plays out. Also, I think some of the personnel decisions this year have not been good, which will further harm the team’s chances.
August 31st, 2026 at 11:22 am
Glad it’s not just me!
Zero faith
Zero confidence
Gun shy dog syndrome
August 31st, 2026 at 11:31 am
Not just you SB~LV. I think the majority here have lost faith in Bowles approach and have had it with bad in game mistakes. The guy will never change…..
August 31st, 2026 at 11:35 am
‘Sooner or later, doesn’t Bowles have to start racking up playoff wins?’
NO!…. Seems like the owners like him despite his lack of coaching ability…
August 31st, 2026 at 11:46 am
Practice Squad signing hit at 12 noon today!
Moe’s “all things related to Bucs” in their own words
Some how don’t like practice squad talk… odd fellas those two

SB~LV, Wildcard round is not playoffs???
August 31st, 2026 at 12:04 pm
Joe Says; Joe thinks Bowles must win the NFC South this fall for job security. Bowles may need a playoff win, too.
^^^^^
Therein lies the dilemma the owners face. It’s all about the timeline.
The timeline with Bowles and the timeline with Baker are not in sync.
This is what I said many months ago.
It’s the Bowles problem that is holding up Baker’s contract.
August 31st, 2026 at 12:09 pm
Oscar … no Wildcard is NOT playoffs!
It’s the bottom of the barrel teams last chance to get into the NFL Playoffs
August 31st, 2026 at 12:24 pm
and the same goes for Baker. If not, new coach (Offensive) and let him pick his QB.
August 31st, 2026 at 12:38 pm
What’s truly mind-boggling is why so many JBFers consider themselves to be Bucs’ fans. Seeing how dissatisfaction seems to breed even more dissatisfaction in others, I get reminded of a needlepoint thingie that my wife made for me many years ago that reads … ‘It’s hard to soar like an eagle when your surround yourself with turkeys’.
The Bucs have done some good things this off-season. There’s been a lot of changes to the coaching staff, plus a lot of new faces now on the roster. We’ve gotten healthier than we were last season, and we’ve gotten bigger (and nastier I hope). Our schedule isn’t nearly as tough as some have predicted that it is (Bucs only play 7 teams that had a winning record last season).
Todd Bowles is the HC this season, regardless of how each of us feels about that decision by the owners. And as the HC, he decided to keep wearing 2 hats and is still our DC. Personally I’m not thrilled by that (not a fan of dual-hatting), but I love the Bucs so I’ll ‘live with it’ and continue to hope for the best. His background tells me that with the ‘right players’, Todd can coach a defense that can rank in the Top-10. I have no idea what Zach is capable of as our new OC, but I’m hoping for the best there too.
August 31st, 2026 at 12:44 pm
Bowles back as the DC means 7-10 or 8-9 again. Bucs need major change after this season.
August 31st, 2026 at 12:47 pm
‘It’s hard to soar like an eagle when your surround yourself with turkeys’
LMAO, Marital “W” DR, you’ve indeed found a “good one”
August 31st, 2026 at 1:05 pm
@DefenseRules
All the coaching changes on the defensive side of the ball are promotions from within, these coaches were all here during the 2-7 finish. If they were so good why couldn’t they help the defense last year? Todd only fired coaches cus he had to present the illusion of change
Bucs play the NFC North, every team in the division finished with a winning record
They play the AFC North and the NFC South as well as the Rams, Chargers and Dallas. Hard to find more than 6 or 7 wins MAX with the schedule and the Head Coach/QB combo
Bucs already have automatic losses to Rams, Chargers, Ravens, Dallas, Lions, I’d be SHOCKED if they were even competitive in any of these match ups. Meaning of the remaining 12 games they have to win 85% of those games to get to 10 wins.
Todd is going to lose at minimum 2 games with his defensive scheme/awful in game management.
Being a fan doesn’t mean being a blind loyalist, let’s be real here this team is not getting anywhere near double digit wins
August 31st, 2026 at 1:06 pm
Yeah I mean it will prob depend how the game plays out, but I most agree about needing playoff win. Preferably 2 or 3, though I don’t think we have the defense for that yet.

dont be so harsh, todd has led the team to an undefeated regular season so far.
August 31st, 2026 at 1:10 pm
DR
Let’s talk turkey.
You’ve been here a long time, and are generally well respected certainly by me, but this take is off the mark.
The additions to the front seven on defense are essentially castoffs and either retreads or aging the layers on their last go around. Along with three rookies that shouldn’t be counted on to turn around a moribund, poorly coached, poorly schemed and poorly implemented defense. One with zero depth. Then we can look at a secondary that you know is woeful, on a good day. Firing secondary coaches that were your buddies only to replace them with said coaches assistants is no upgrade in my book, only a photocopy of a photocopy.
Offensively, our illustrious genius O line whisperer GM, faced with a unit last year that was so thin as to ostensibly be the reason the team and QB were as terrible as the defense, still has no credible depth. Add to that, we added an OC who was far less than stellar in Atlanta and certainly hasn’t inspired much here,(albeit without much opportunity so far), and things don’t look very sound to anyone with an unbiased view.
Been a fan since the beginning, but I’m sorry, a GM that can’t build a consistent roster.. and frequently botches 2nd round picks as well as refuses to trade a pick for proven talent, along with retaining a coach who still struggles with managing in game situations and whose teams continually come out flat, uninspired and bored is unacceptable. It’s actually flat out ridiculous.
I’ll always be a Bucs fan, but I won’t have my leg pissed on only to be told it’s raining. I can get that from D.C.
It’s time for change. Past time.

August 31st, 2026 at 1:39 pm
Fire Cannons is realistic.
August 31st, 2026 at 1:52 pm
Fire the Cannons & Fire Todd … ‘Bucs already have automatic losses to Rams, Chargers, Ravens, Dallas, Lions’.
Since 2019 when he came here, Todd has the following results against those teams in the regular season:
o Rams: 2 wins – 3 losses
o Chargers: 2 wins – 0 losses
o Ravens: 0 wins – 2 losses
o Cowboys: 2 wins – 1 loss
o Lions: 3 wins – 2 losses
So over those 7 years, our record against those teams that you pencil in as ‘automatic losses’ is 9-8. They’re all very good teams, but historically it still looks like more of a toss-up to me than anything.
August 31st, 2026 at 1:53 pm
I am with you brother!
August 31st, 2026 at 2:00 pm
Jmarkbuc … One of the neat things about JBF is that it’s a blog, and as such can accommodate a variety of different opinions (in all seriousness, the Joes are very good about allowing that). Personally I think that’s great, because that’s how I tend to learn (ie, by bouncing others’ opinions about various subjects against my own opinions, and hopefully learning in the process).
I obviously believe that our defense will be MUCH BETTER this year than they were last season. Believe it or not, the position group that has me the most excited is the ILBs. I’m convinced that Anzalone & Trotter will make a mammoth difference in this defense. But, as we’ve all said many times, ‘only time will tell’.
August 31st, 2026 at 2:02 pm
@ Defense Rules
Rams have added and upgraded their defense and McVay usually owns Todd’s scheme.
Chargers added a top 10 offensive playcaller who schooled Todd with Quinn Ewers last season.
Ravens with Lamar usually laugh at this sad defensive scheme on the way to a W
Dallas, I’d normally say is a toss up, but on a short week the outcome usually favors the home team. Besides Dallas’s WR’s are going to feast on the Bucs DB’s
Bowles & the Bucs soft defense vs Goff usually is not pretty for us Buc fans
Appreciate the research, but I stand by the way this defense usually gets shredded by competent OC’s
August 31st, 2026 at 2:58 pm
Mindbogglingly.
That’s an understatement!
August 31st, 2026 at 3:03 pm
JMark—
You stole my thunder. Couldn’t agree more.
Somewhere along the line, and to a large degree within these pages, constructive criticism has metamorphosed into “hatred.” Be it politics or sports, sycophantic blind followers have twisted reality into their own, myopic belief systems. In their so-called minds, if we do not agree with them, we are the enemy, despite us wanting the same thing. A GREAT BUCS TEAM!
Many here think we can do better than Bowles, including D. Rules who I also respect, but we are stuck with him. Conversely, does that mean we’re all supposed to shut up and blindly support him? That’s where I differ from Mr. Rules.
Baker is our quarterback and Licht is our GM. Because they belong to the team we support, should they be above reproach?
I consider myself a constructive critic who is disappointed with the way the team I prioritize within all sports is going.
Malcom Glazer listened to us. He dumped both Dungy and Gruden, the latter after a four game losing streak (Bowles has losing streaks every year). His sons? I wonder … so much so I sometimes wonder if they know ANYTHING about football.
On one particular matter; the letting of Coen walk and the retaining of Bowles, I lost it!! And to this day I believe that to be one of the most inept moves since the Glazers owned the team.
With that, just because we’re stuck with Todd, and the conservative no-risk Jason Licht, I’ll never start thinking either is the right man for the job, albeit more so with Bowles.
F*&$&@#g GO BUCS!
August 31st, 2026 at 3:04 pm
3 starters from out ’25 front 7 aren’t even in the NFL anymore, and one MORE is now a backup. You can’t coach talent
August 31st, 2026 at 3:06 pm
the difference this year has to be the defense, maybe 2026 this is equal to 1996 when Hardy Nickerson came over and changed the culture
August 31st, 2026 at 3:15 pm
WTF?? Bowles can’t hold Tony’s jock lol. .652 career win%, 19 playoff appearances, SB win… the list goes on. Only similarities are they’re both African American, former players & defensive background coaches, and supposedly good people. Two COMPLETELY different quality classes as coaches though.

Yet we’ve beat every single one of those teams except the Ravens since Todd has been here. Some of them we’ve beaten multiple times.
Being a perpetual Debbie Downer seems exhausting.
I’m not even a fan of Bowles, but I’m hoping for the best. Same as it ever was.
August 31st, 2026 at 4:19 pm
JA –
It would be really interesting to understand if the glazer’s Coen/Bowles decision was made because of:
1) they were so scared of the optics of letting him go after a 10 win season.
Or
2) they actually believed it was better to continue with a 60 plus year old defensive coordinator who at that point had three full seasons of data on how he manages the team (conservatively)
It’s possible I’m naive but I think it’s mostly #1 considering that we were only able to get back into the playoffs because of our weak schedule down the stretch.
If that decision and process was ever a 30 for 30 I’d be glued to the screen.
August 31st, 2026 at 4:25 pm
^ I don’t think the Glazers were ever looking at it as “We either keep Bowles, or we fire him and promote Coen as HC” during that offseason.
If you remember, the Bucs thought they already had a deal with Coen to stay on as OC / assistant head coach with a significant pay raise. Then he disappeared to go work out his deal with the Jags while the Bucs were waiting to hear back from him.
None of us will probably ever really know the full details. But no I don’t think they were ever considering firing Bowles after a 10 win season.

JA … ‘Conversely, does that mean we’re all supposed to shut up and blindly support him? That’s where I differ from Mr. Rules.’
I’m a huge advocate for ‘constructive criticism’ and a variety of personal opinions, and I apologize if anything I wrote came across as meaning that you should ‘blindly support him’ (Todd Bowles or any other coach or GM). My ‘issue’ with Bowles is his being dual-hatted. Very few NFL coaches can pull that off successfully UNLESS they’ve got a counterpart (OC or DC) who’s incredibly competent and can operate virtually independently (very little oversight). The ONLY year that Todd had that IMO was 2024 when Liam Coen was our OC.
I spent my first career in the military, largely as a pilot in fighter squadrons (8 different squadrons). Of those, I only remember who the squadron commander was by name in TWO of them. And yet all of them were fantastic organizations, mostly because of strong leadership within the organization (not necessarily at the very top?). Most had a very strong Operations Officer (the 2nd guy in charge) as well as strong Flight Commanders (the next level), and that’s what allowed each to become ‘well-oiled machines’ as they say?).
I personally see professional sports teams as being similarly organized. Joe sometimes poo-poo’s leadership, but I don’t. What made our 2002 Bucs’ defense one of the Top-5 of all time IMO wasn’t just Monte Kiffin. It was the support that he had from some incredible assistant coaches, many of whom went on to much higher responsibilities. It was also though the Field Leadership that we had, in guys like Warren Sapp, Derek Brooks & John Lynch. They made sure that ‘the plan’ was executed to perfection on the field. We’ve missed that aspect recently, but I have a hunch it’ll improve greatly over the next couple of years.

DR, you can’t count years Arians was the HC. That was his team. You don’t think he had a say in what, and how the defense performed?Leftwich was a good OC until Arians retired, same with Bowles. Without Arians it’s been downhill since. Bowles is a .500 coach. Sugar coat it anyway you want. Like others I’ll continue to be a Buc fan, but just not a gullible one. This is a .500 roster with a .500 coach. The Rams creamed us last year. Wait till you see what they do to us adding Donald, and Garrett. Donald is a legend who came out of retirement because he sees a SB team. Our legend Evans left money on the table to get away from 3rd and 28. Enough said.

McKay was instrumental in keeping the team in Tampa after Culverhouse’s death, with getting RJS pushed through and having the foresight to hire easily the best coach this team has ever had after firing Wicky Wacky Wyche.
This isn’t the first time you’ve shown your cognitive dissonance.
Firing McKay was the second dumbest thing the Glazers had done at the time, behind firing Dungy, the third was letting Gruden bring Bruce Allen in here.
If you don’t know what you’re talking about.. try imagining what silence looks like.
RICH McKAY FOR ROH!!

Surely Cyberdilemma, your hard drive is malfunctioning…
Have you watched the Bucs play?
Did you watch the Steelers play when Tomlin was there or the Ravens when Harbaugh was there?
Bowles isn’t half the coach that they are and we aren’t blind
Being in Florida, we’re not too keen on sympathy hires that were gifted the job
Bowels is the same coach he was with the Jets
There’s one reason he’s still here only one

Unbelievable
As I said in a recent post TB12 had as much, and probably more, to do with “building” a SB roster than Bud Licht.
Licht is a poser. McKay was legit.

Joe would argue Bowles has been the better coach since 2022 than Tomlin.
Ever since Big Ben retired, Pittsburgh’s offenses have been horrendous.
Bowles has one more playoff win than Tomlin since 2022.
Bowles has had two offensive coordinators take over other teams and lead them to the playoffs. Tomlin’s offensive coordinators were so wretched they either are out of coaching or are in college.
When Bowles needed a quarterback, he signed Mayfield. When Tomlin needed a quarterback, he drafted Kenny Pickett. As least Bowles understands you need a competent offense in the NFL in the 2020s if you hope to win.
BUT, Tomlin talks a good game and he gets fired up on the sidelines. smh

That’s not exactly correct, but you’re not wrong.
Chucky constantly ragged on McKay about personnel and constantly went over his head to get his way. And, long story short, McKay got tired of Chucky stepping over him to get his way time after time. McKay didn’t get canned.
(Remember, McKay wanted Marvin Lewis and the Glazers told him, “Thanks, we’ll take over the coaching search now.” So Chucky was never McKay’s guy.)
But yeah, Chucky basically ran McKay off.
