“We Need More”

April 30th, 2026

Still out there.

One, two, three… (four?) edge rushers is not enough, says a man who has a large platform on the Tampa Bay airwaves.

About 20 years ago, Joe used to have a tax accountant who seemed rather shady.

Every April, the accountant had Joe think of every small morsel of a tax write-off to use. This man was obsessed with his clients not paying taxes, which made Joe wonder if the IRS may come knocking. (That never happened, thankfully.)

As Joe laid out expenses, the accountant would shake his head and bluntly raise his voice, “We need more!” It was more of an order than a suggestion.

In a sense, Aaron Jacobson of WDAE-AM 620/WDAE-FM 95.7 is telling Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht, “We need more!”

More edge rushers, that is.

Jacobson applauded Licht for getting Al-Quadin Muhammad in free agency and drafting Rueben Bain and hyping short-armed David Walker as the next Lawrence Taylor. It’s not enough, Jacobson said on his weekday morning show with Pat Donovan.

“But when it comes to pass rushers, Pat, what do you always say?” Jacobson asked rhetorically. “Can’t have enough. So for this team, and even with the signing of Muhammad, you’ve got [YaYa] Diaby, of course, and you’ve got guys now that fit the pieces.

“And I still think there can be more done.”

So who would Jacobson like to see Licht sign? Jacobson believes brittle free agent Joey Bosa would be a strong signing.

“[Have Bosa be a] rotational guy [to] come in and wreak havoc when you can,” Jacobson said. “You do not have to be the guy that you were, you just come in and help out and add that depth and be [the] veteran voice and presence.

“I still think that pass rush is where they have to address still and go after because you can never have too many.”

Jacobson isn’t wrong. For example, notice that Houston, the team with the most physical defensive line in the game last season, signed Bucs free agent defensive tackle Logan Hall and then drafted DT Kayden McDonald in Round 2.

The good teams are doing this. The Bucs want to be recognized, again, as a good team.

(Joe’s going to call it right now: whatever team Houston plays, fade that same team a week later because Houston is just going to beat the sh!! out of opponents in the trenches.)

The Bucs wouldn’t be asking Bosa to start, just be a situational pass rusher.

Joe *hopes* YaYa breaks out this fall. This AQM, it’s great he had double-digit sacks last year. Awesome, actually. But why did he not start one game? And of course, Bain, a rookie, will try to make a dent in Todd Bowles’ defense that historically has not been kind to rookie edge rushers.

And, cue the recording, Joe would like to see David Walker complete a padded practice before he is fitted with a cape.

@953wdaeWhat needs do the Bucs still need to address?♬ original sound – 957wdae

  1. WestPhillyBucsFan Says:

We don’t need Bosa. Yaya, Bain, Walker and AQM are enough. Especially with Nelson in the Mix. If Anthony Nelson is your 5th pass rusher (maybe 4th) on the depth chart, I can live with that. Nelson is no slouch.

  2. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

YaYa, Bain, and Scott are enough to rush the passer. Teams won’t be able to stop them. I bet Vita gets more sacks also.

(Multiple spelling errors in this one, Joe)

  3. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

And yes I know Scott is a CB.

  4. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

As to Walker…he isn’t even worth talking about for the same reason Joe stated.

I have a very good feeling the defense will start huming at some point this year.

  5. Stpetematt Says:

Flip Bain and Yaya to DE and bring in Walker and Muhammad as OLB’s and rush all of them on obvious passing downs. That would be very nuts.

  6. Stpetematt Says:

And no, we do not need more OLB’s. We could use another corner and guard though (waive Feeney).

  7. Tony Says:

    SIGN SHAQ JPP OR SIMEON!

  8. FlBoy84 Says:

Happen to agree another vet like Bosa for depth would be a wise investment at a reasonable price. All it takes is one or two nagging injuries for things to go south in a hurry.

  9. adam from ny Says:

    we don’t really need bosa…

truth is you can try to egg lavonte on, to come back as a situational ilb pass rusher type…

when lavonte’s mission is…”or was”… to blitz for a sack, he is pretty darn good at it

  10. Stpetematt Says:

They are definitely good at beating up on their opponents (the Texans). They knocked a very tough Mauch out for the year!

  11. Defense Rules Says:

Joe … ‘So who would Jacobson like to see Licht sign? Jacobson believes brittle free agent Joey Bosa would be a strong signing. Jacobson isn’t wrong’.

Uhhh, yes he is. Bucs have no real idea what we’ve got right NOW as far as a defense goes. We have a ton of new pieces, some of which are ‘older’ & others of which haven’t even played a single def snap in the NFL yet. We’ve got several guys coming off injuries, and several guys who’ve only had marginal productivity over the past year or two.

So NOW you want to make room for ANOTHER aging OLB with a history of injuries & a meh year last year? Over the past 4 years, Bosa has played in 43 games … 11 games a season. Wow! He’s gotten a TOTAL of 19 sacks in those 4 years (5 sacks average per season), along with 43 QB hits (11 average), 23 TFLs (6 average), 9 FFs (2 average), plus 81 tackles (20 average), with an average Missed Tackle Rate of 13.6%. That’s marginal productivity. In his first 6 years with the Chargers, he was a beast. In his last 4 years … meh.

Bucs have Diaby, Nelson & Braswell as OLBs who all know Bowles’ system (and play the run quite well), plus Muhammad, Bain & Walker who all have good credentials (but more as pass rushers). That’s 6 OLBs for a defense that only puts TWO OLBs on the field at any one time.

On our DLine we now have Vea (6’4″ & 347 lbs), Capehart (6’4″ & 313 lbs), Robinson (6’3″ & 320 lbs), RNR (6’2″ & 307 lbs), Roberts (6’4″ & 295 lbs) & Kancey (6′ & 280 lbs). Our DLine has gotten a LOT beefier & nastier. And THAT is gonna help our OLBs to be a lot more productive.

If you’re adamant about adding another defender Joe, let’s add a veteran CB who’s capable of starting outside. That’d help us a LOT more than adding an over-30 OLB with an injury history. Our youngsters are the future of this defense. Let’s get them some quality def snaps & see what we’ve really got.

  12. Defense Rules Says:

Bonzai … ‘I have a very good feeling the defense will start huming at some point this year.’

I’m surprised that Joe didn’t chide you for that ‘huming’ spelling Bonzai after you chided him for his spelling earlier.

  13. Stpetematt Says:

Bucs signed a bunch of excellent UDFA’s so maybe one of them will work out for corner and another for guard so we can get rid of Feeney. He just isn’t good.

  14. Ryan Says:

    No thanks.

  15. Smoke Porterhouse Says:

IF the coach uses the pass rushers properly (lets them rush the passer and not out in coverage), the Bucs should be better. A Bosa signing would be like a Reddick signing from last year, IMHO.

  16. Stpetematt Says:

Except worse because Bosa stinks out loud against the run.

  17. ScottyMack Says:

Joe asks, “This AQM, it’s great he had double-digit sacks last year. Awesome, actually. But why did he not start one game?”

Keep in mind that this question is posed in the same article that seems to be advocating for signing Bosa to a situational pass rush role. Would Joe then ask, “why did he not start a game?”

  18. rrsrq Says:

Bucs also have interior rushsers when healthy with Vita and Kalijah and of the blitzers

  19. Jarrett Says:

Look man, I hate to break this to Jason Licht and Bucs faithful

But the front office really is taking a victory lap after the draft

Joe , I keep telling you . To Jason Licht … the draft IS THE SUPERBOWL .. SMH

WHY TRY TO ACTUALLY WIN THE SUPERBOWL WHEN YOU CAN WIN THE DRAFT

THIS TEAM IS NO WHERE NEAR COMPETING FOR A SUPERBOWL WITH THE CURRENT ROSTER

JOE, here are some Free Agents that are BETTER THAN OUR CURRENT STARTERS

    – STEPHON DIGGS
    – MARSHON LATTIMORE
    – JOEY BOSA
    – JADAVEON CLOWNEY
    – TYREEK HILL
    – TREVON DIGGS

THESE DUDES WOULD ALL BE DAY ONE STARTERS ON THIS TEAM

  20. Jarrett Says:

    Joe,

I am so tired of Bowles saying “We like the guys we Got”

And “Our Young Guys need the reps”

That mindset is truly hindering this franchise

Stephon Diggs is better than ANY RECEIVER ON THE ROSTER

Marshon Lattimore is better than ANY CORNER ON THE ROSTER

Clowney and Bosa are better than any pass rusher on this roster

They’d rather be wrong just to justify playing their draft picks SMFH

  21. Fanofdabucs Says:

    Hey Jarrett;

    You’re clueless.

All those guys are just big names and all past their primes. There is a reason they’re all unemployed.

This isn’t Madden kid. Get a clue.

  22. Fanofdabucs Says:

As for adding Bosa, another guy past his prime, injury prone and doesn’t play the run. At most your keeping 5 edge rushers..who you cutting if you sign washed up Bosa?

  23. ATLBuc Says:

    Joe Says:

This AQM, it’s great he had double-digit sacks last year. Awesome, actually. But why did he not start one game?

    ——————————————————————
Neither did Shaq before he came here.

  24. Irishmist Says:

Joe, could you send me the number of that accountant?

  25. Obvious Says:

It sounds like your accountant was doing his job, well.

He’s right you can never have enough. But the same can be said for line depth on both sides, WRs, running backs and corners. You can’t do it all. There are only so many roster spots.

The key is finding the right equation with rushers and coverage. If you can get good luck with health it’s a big factor.

  26. Buckit Says:

I love it when a commenter points out spelling errors, and then makes one himself. What a clown. Or if you prefer ? take.

  27. Eckwood Says:

Jarrett is not clueless and Jason i love myself Licht does celebrate himself !! He has a bad case of dumb jock pre ejackulation , Jason loves to celebrate touchdowns when you havnt even crossed the 20 yard line ……….. Now some of those guys he mentioned can’t play 17 anymore or are head cases ! However the point is ,this is a time when only a few GM s are still aggressively trying to improve their roster ( and it’s pretty dam easy) . McKay won a Super bowl with a hand built roster through every little rock unturned , with a late summer free agent at left tackle and Brad J at qb. Licht won a SB with Brady and Brady had his hand on every aspect of the team . Licht , mirror dances more in a week than McKay has done in his career . Jarret you are laying down what Jason doesn’t Get and I TOTALLY AGREE !! This isn’t a my guys business it’s a best guys business with an eye on Chemistry with the Besy Guys !!

  28. Truth be Told Says:

Bring Bosa in. The more Paisans on the Team the better lol-especially those that can help our Putrid Pass Defense. Go Bucs!

  29. Ben Says:

I agree. They shpuld have drafted another edge rusher in mid rounds. Yaya last year on deal, Mo only 1 year. Bain and walker unporven. Braswell bust, Nelson depth guy. Bain and walker could be good, but they could also be the next JTS or Braswell. Hype is all tjey are right now.

  30. Been there since the beginning Says:

NO we don’t need Boso the gimp, I can see him standing on the sideline with crutches getting paid like Sherman, and Jones once have. Thanks for the money, but I’m broke and can’t make back onto the field of play. SORRY..

  31. Buckit Says:

“Truth” Yes, I think you may be on to something. Bosa would be just the second Italiano on the roster, if signed. There are injury concerns with Bosa, so signing him has that risk, but you would get a guy that plays his azz off on every down.

  32. Mort Says:

Bosa is washed. We don’t need him at all. I’d rather have Nelly as the 5th edge. He’s also a vet and can at least produce something when he’s out there.

  33. UGotRobbed Says:

    @ Ben…lol!

  34. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

I’d rather give Mohammed Kamara an opportunity to earn a roster spot over getting a guy who’s highly likely to occupy a spot on injured reserve and be a disappointment.

Honestly, this all just smells like the name game and that’s how branding works.

  35. Buckit Says:

Bring him in on a one year team friendly deal. He could compete with Braswell. With any luck push Braswell off the roster.

“In his time with the Buffalo Bills last year, he recorded 29 tackles, five sacks and an NFL-best five forced fumbles. At 30 years old, he likely can produce a season similar to that in 2026.”

  36. football 1 Says:

Yes, I like we need another corner, guard and ILB, please

  37. larrd Says:

The Bucs need one or two more cornerbacks, imo. They’ve got four, but need six.

  38. Fred McNeil Says:

Bosa probably wants $30 million to play 12 snaps a game till he’s hurt again
    .

  39. 813bucboi Says:

Folks have to pump the brakes on the whole” we dont need him” talk lol…

we definitely could use Bosa and I’d welcome the signing just not right now…

you sign a player like Bosa, an often-injured vet who can still be somewhat productive towards the end of TC/during pre season….

Bosa got 5 sacks last year…more than Braswell and Nelson lol..

like others mentioned, between now and the start of TC, i’d like to see us sign another CB and IOL….

during TC & PS, i wanna see what Mohammed Kamara, Jayson Jones and the UDFAs can do

with that said, Bosa and L. Sneed would be great additions to this team

    GO BUCS!!!!

  40. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

“Folks have to pump the brakes on the whole” we dont need him” talk lol…”

Not in this case 813, we don’t need him. Just drafted Bain, this’ll be Walkers’ first year, and we’re going to let Yaya earn a new deal after extending Kancey.

Bosa got 5 sacks, but Nelly had 3 playing 37% of our defensive snaps compared to Bosas’ 57% snap share.

    We don’t need’em bawse

  41. SlyPirate Says:

    I’ll take his brother.

  42. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

The one that played 3 games last year?

    Branding lol

  43. View from 132 Says:

Its big name guys that aren’t worth it season.

  44. Rod Munch Says:

    Sign everyone you can.

You literally can’t have too many pass rushers.

  45. 813bucboi Says:

    WBL

    i disagree brother…

injuries could strike at any time…and when they do, they normally come in 3s to the same position lol…

im not counting on Walker, Nelly or Braswell to make an major impact/production….hoping they do but im not counting on it…

Bain will be fine but he’ll go thru an adjustment period…YaYa will give us 6-8sacks guaranteed and AQM might do a lil something…he’s a huge question mark…in a contract year, he produced and they still let him walk

no harm in signing Bosa mid TC to a low number as a part time player…he might be able to teach Nelly, Braswell and other a little something at the very worse…

now if he wants starter money, all bets are off lol….dont need him lol

    GO BUCS!!!!

  46. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

“im not counting on Walker, Nelly or Braswell to make an major impact/production….hoping they do but im not counting on it…”

    Ones pretty much a rookie.
The other is one of our better run defenders
The other is a draftee who’s been buried on the depth chart since being drafted, and in limited reps has shown nothing.

You know what they have been, healthy.

Know what Bosa has not been, healthy. Also made the Pro Bowl his last year with the Chargers, you know what they did? Let him hit the market.

As to your AQM point, Detroit Lions media and at least one of the Lions former players are still questioning why they let a guy who signed for $6M walk, and it’s to hinge their bets on players they already have who have potential.

    Proof:

It does feel like Detroit might be trying to rely on help from Alim McNeill and even Tyleik Williams this season as it pertains to their pass rush, especially since McNeill had been the best pocket disruptor Detroit had next to Hutchinson before they signed Muhammad. But, do they really believe that one of Lacy or Hassanein are going to develop into ideal EDGE2 options in the starting lineup?

Of course, they have the draft as an option to find another potential starter next to Hutchinson. That might be the plan after all, especially with how cheaply Muhammad ended up going for on the market. It was anticipated that he’d be getting a huge payday after an 11.5 sack season, but instead, he goes to Tampa Bay for what feels like a steal.”

Detroit also picked up Gibbs’ 5th year, but not Jack Campbell.

I think AQM being available says more about Detroits’ front office than it says about AQMs talent

The Lions let him walk, for the same reason they just declined Jack Campbells’ 5th yea

  47. Noclu4u Says:

I compare Walker to Dwight Freeney not L.Taylor. I know Joe was being facetious but if you watch the film of Walker then watch film of Freeney you see a lot of similarities. Quite a lot actually. Not saying Walker is the next Freeney but if he is half as good it would be a steal.
    As always Go Bucs

  48. Stanglassman Says:

They signed UDFA LSU Edge Jack Pybure he sets the edge well and is a great run stuffer. Streaky pass rusher. Someone to keep an eye on in OTAs and camp.

The Bucs are finished with free agent signings. The next time they would be picking up players will be walk-on tryouts and after final cut downs.

  49. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

“The Bucs are finished with free agent signings. The next time they would be picking up players will be walk-on tryouts and after final cut downs.”

Eh, unless someone we could put to “good” use is made available post-June 1, which is like the 2nd wave of free agency.

  50. 813bucboi Says:

    WBL

    i hear ya…

lions FO is confident in their coaching staff and the way they develop players…especially defensive players

but 11 sacks in the NFL is nothing to sneeze at…why werent teams throwing deals at this kid?…

maybe they see a little in him, in what they saw from another former lion….James Houston…kid played in 7games with 2 starts but produced 8sacks…then disappeared

i think AQM at the very worst would be solid and produce YaYa type numbers…6-8sacks

regarding Bosa, you wouldnt sign him to a 1year 3.5 million deal?…

thats what j.clowney got in dallas and he only played in 13games with 6 starts…but produced 8.5 sacks…thats low risk high reward

and clowney is still a FA lol…

    GO BUCS!!!!

  51. Buckit Says:

Comments made about Bosa being injury prone do not relate to his 2025 season with the Bills. He started 15 regular season games and both of the Bills post season games. Another comment made that he jumps offsides more than he creates pressures, in 2025 he had 3 penalties attributed to him, only one was for jumping offsides. And his 5 forced fumbles to lead the league is not too shabby.
I don’t think he is a must have but would be a nice to have at the right cost. Damn sure more confident in his abilities than Reddick and his 14M salary last season.

  52. Rod Munch Says:

Buckit – Don’t expected reasoned and accurate comments in a comments section. Come on. Nothing to do with Joe’s site, that’s the entire internet.

  53. Buckit Says:

“Rod” I definitely don’t expect it, but fun to set the record straight for those that like to throw Spit against the wall.

  54. Sam Says:

    We will never learn.

  55. Steve V. Says: Says:

Right on Jarrett! There’s a boat load of knowledge on your list ,and they still can move!

  56. Evo Says:

I want Bosa. He can teach these guys so much. And when Kancey gets hurt, Bain can slide inside and dominate these guards. I don’t see why we’re still banking on Yaya. You can never have too many pass rushers. Keep everyone fresh and healthy the more they rotate. Tackles would be worn out dealing with all those DEs and their different styles. Fourth quarters would be insane with that rotation in this heat.

  57. B Says:

Just seems predictable as always. Moderately good start, then Kancey is hurt, Vea’s snaps are limited, Darby good not great, 1st round pic hits rookie wall…and we are back where started. Of course we need more and of course we won’t get it. By the way- we have seen the bull rushing tough de with no pass rushing moves before in Adrian Claiborne.

  58. Section 312 Says:

9 months and counting until Todd Blows REIGN OF TERROR on this franchise is finally over.

Bucs could have 4 Pro Bowl edge rushers and this pass defense will still struggle, the scheme SUCKS and has for 7 years

  59. Noclu4u Says:

    Section 312 says
That scheme looked pretty darn good in the superbowl. Held a top 5 offense out of the emd zone the entire game. Bowles scheme is fine. I don’t think people realize how bad the personnel is. There is multiple starters on that defense that couldn’t start on 85 percent of the league’s teams.
    As always Go Bucs.
