Alex Anzalone: Don’t Overlook Baker Mayfield’s Arm
April 10th, 2026Alex Anzalone is just like any Bucs fan, it seems.
The newish Bucs linebacker, appearing on the Schultz Report Podcast with Jordan Schultz, was asked about his new quarterback, Baker Mayfield. Anzalone suggested many folks have Mayfield all wrong.
Behind the aura and linebacker mentality is a guy with a gifted arm, Anzalone said.
“You know, people get caught up in that, his competitive nature and his toughness and kind of his swag and stuff like that,” Anzalone said. “But, like, he’s a really good quarterback. He’s a really good quarterback.
“You know, he’s got great accuracy. He’s been through multiple, multiple systems. He’s a smart player. So, yeah, it will be fun to have him on my side.”
With Liam Coen, Mayfield was accurate. In 2024, he ranked third in the league among quarterbacks with double-digit starts with a completion percentage of 71 percent.
That slipped to 63 percent last year and Joe guesses the drop off was due to all the injuries: Mayfield’s, his receivers and his offensive line.

April 10th, 2026 at 5:48 am
Baker Mayfield was accurate in Liam Coen” Dink and Dunk” offense in 2024
But Josh Grizzard mostly ran a vertical passing offense in 2025
Baker wasn’t as accurate last season, because he’s not an accurate vertical passer
April 10th, 2026 at 6:56 am
one oc could get results, the other one was grizzard. i know which one has a future as a hc in thls league and which one is grizzard.
April 10th, 2026 at 7:04 am
Lakeland. There are probably about, oh, less than a dozen QBs on planet earth that spin the ball like Baker. No scouting report on Mayfield in history have ever mentioned vertical passing a weakness. It’s you- and Rod Munch. And a few others- we’ll call them the munchalots. And Lakeland, Liam Coen’s dink and dunk offense? Look at the 41 TD passes that year. Look at the beautiful deep balls and the number of exquisite passes. Baker Mayfield is the definition of a gunslinger Lakeland. Take your silly stats and file them where the sun don’t shine Lakeland. Any twit can see what kind of arm Baker possesses.

Vertical offense = lower completion %.
Go look at Josh Allen or Patrick Mahomes—same thing happens when they push it downfield.

Not worried about his arm, I’m worried about his brain. He had some brain fart interceptions down the stretch that cost us games. Nothing wrong with his arm, he just threw some great strikes to the wrong team. Hopefully Zac can get him back on track.
April 10th, 2026 at 7:27 am
Baker is a short passing QB, meaning he thrives when the ball travels less than 10 yards. Hes good with screens and flat throws but when the ball travels 10+ yards his accuracy drops to the leagues worst.
He ranked 38th out of 41 qualifying quarterbacks in completion percentage on throws of 10+ air yards over the second half of the season.
During a critical late-season stretch (from Week 7 through Week 14), he completed just 35.9% of passes traveling 10 or more yards in the air.
He recorded a passer rating of 111.6 on short passes (under 10 yards), which led the NFL, but this dropped off sharply as target depth increased.
He recorded 28 big-time throws (typically high-difficulty deep passes), but he balanced those with 28 turnover-worthy plays, ranking 33rd among 43 quarterbacks in PFF passing grade.
Baker is only accurate when he throws short passes, it’s the only way he can move the offense.

Take your silly stats and file them where the sun don’t shine. Bee. King of the munchalots.
April 10th, 2026 at 7:37 am
People that really know football or played the game for that matter talk about Baker’s arm all the time. Any of these morons that sit on the couch and analyze things to death and just hate Baker. They have no credibility. They’re just haters.
April 10th, 2026 at 7:47 am
I’m a Bucs fan, not a Baker Mayfield fan
I’m all for what works best for this team, to get wins
And last season, they threw less to the RBs
For Baker to be successful, he need to target the RBs more
I don’t believe injuries was the reason for his 2nd half slump
Poor play, poor decisions, inaccuracy were the reasons
No QB is 100% healthy for every game
Only weak teams, weak players uses injuries as an excuse
April 10th, 2026 at 7:56 am
Stats are for losers, they are misleading
I’m not talking about stats, I’m talking about his game performance
The only stat that matters is getting the win
We were taught that in Pop Warner football
No one cares about Baker Mayfield stats
That was a big problem going into last season
Too many guys focusing on their personal stats
April 10th, 2026 at 7:56 am
Most of our wins were because of Mayfield. Most of our losses were because of Mayfield. What that tells you is we didn’t have much of a team around him…
April 10th, 2026 at 8:07 am
“That slipped to 63 percent last year and Joe guesses the drop off was due to all the injuries: Mayfield’s, his receivers and his offensive line.”
Mayfields’ career completion percentage is 63.5%.
And he’s completed almost a 5th of his completions to RBs since coming here to RBs.
2023:
Rachaad White caught 64(17%) of Bakers’ 364 completions and was our 3rd leading target
2024:
White, Irving, & Tucker caught a combined 107(26%) of 407 completions. White was 3rd in receptions, and Bucky was 5th in receptions.
2025:
White, Irving & Tucker combined for 78(22%) of 343 completions
What some of you don’t want to hear is that Baker has had 30 games as a Buc he’s passed for <250 yards. The rub about using the RBs so much is that they're also catching a ton of passes behind the LOS, meaning they always end up with less net yardage than they have because ALOT of their positive yardage comes from YAC and not air yards. That's the problem with looking at volume and trying to paint the entire picture based solely off that.
Having a live arm is one thing. Having the touch, eye discipline, and composure to push the ball upfield consistently is another thing, but good on Anzalone for being PC and supporting the Baker Mayfield brand lol
April 10th, 2026 at 8:10 am
Lakeland
If you take what Lavonte David said for face value, he made it sound like Baker was a lot more injured than most thought he was. I for one do not see David having a reason to lie about this, especially now that he’s retired. Baker threw some really amazing deeper passes to EE earlier in the season and then lost that deep touch big time later in the season. So the injuries are definitely a part of it. Now when you have a terrible offensive line, mostly injured, and some of your better receivers are hurt letting the defense focus in on one guy, that’s where some of those bad decisions creap in. Like forcing it and scrambling a little too long for that extra yard to get her first down and not sliding… taking unnecessary shots. Some of what Baker did, he was forced into IMO.
I still would rather pay the guy and keep him around since I’ve been a fan through the Testaverde, Dilfer and Winston eras… along with all the other short term terrible QBs (Sean King showed flashes but… small hands).
As Bucs fans, we know what the alternative can be all too well.
April 10th, 2026 at 8:28 am

One stat that doesn’t show up is the time needed for a down field play to unfold. The receiver being able to get to the spot and the time needed, blocking, to let the QB set and throw accurately. Early in the season he had it. With Coen the line was mostly intact all year, makes a big difference.
April 10th, 2026 at 8:36 am
The injuries and poor play by the defense doomed the 2025 season. Todd Bowles also fired several coaches on defense. If the Bucs defense is a repeat of last year we all know what happens next. He has to right the ship.

Kenton, you think when players are talking to the media they’re being 100% transparent?
Also, the fact so many of you have Rod on your mind when he’s not even in this post or said anything on this topic thus far shows how mentally weak and easily triggered some of you are. Especially the ones that’ll hear a quote from Licht/Bowles and talk about being “gaslit”, I’d hate to see how some of ya’ll cope with actual adversity and not something that just challenges how YOU see things.
In the absence of objectivity, ignorance is king, I’m just sayin. . .

Exactly, what’s he going to say “when I was in Detroit we looked forward to playing the Bucs with Baker”
or
“We had a secondary full of back ups this past year, and they managed keep that Baker led offense to 9 points”
or “Jared Goff threw 21 less passes and completed 8 less passes than Mayfield and still managed to throw for more yards”

WBL. Let’s be real. Early 2024 season. At Detroit. Our defense flying around. Mayfield flying around. Flinging passes right past Anzalone’s ear hole. Running the football and flinging the football until, as a team, we pulled off the upset. Detroit was about at the very top of their game right about then. It’s alot easier when the team is healthy and playing well. When that’s happening, we can beat anybody. And I ain’t whistling Dixie.

Bee is full of his own bs. Can’t figure out if he’s an idiot or just really dumb. This is an example of what the desperate resort to. If it wasn’t sad knowing a human is that dumb, it would be hilarious to think of what life would be like for a person with an IQ of room temperature. But I am glad Baker lives in your head and forces you to quote ridiculous fake stats. You might think about seeing a professional for some much needed help. When you are that jealous it only gets worse with time Bee. On second thought Bee, please for the sake of us all, get some help. Being toxic is not healthy…

We only scored 20 points in that game and held the Lions to 16 points.
Baker threw 19 passes for 185 yards, a score and a pick.
He was apart of the team effort, but it’s not like he was balling out.
Our defense however, held Goff to 0 pass TDs, picked him off twice.
Nobody is on top of their game week 2 of the regular season, we caught a break-no pun intended-when Hutch got hurt and was no longer able to violate Baker as a pass rusher.

Baker is one of three quarterbacks to throw for 4,500+, 40+ touchdowns with a 100+ passer rating. That rarely accomplished feat was done with a good OC. 1 of 3 EVER. Baker led the team to be the first team, Bucs, in NFL history to win 4 of the first 5 games on a game winning score in the final minute of regulation. Against some of the leagues best defenses. With 2nd & 3rd string OL. The ONLY team to ever do it. Baker, in his first 7 years had a passer rating of 140+ so many times, he and Aaron Rodgers are the ONLY quarterbacks to match that amount. Rodgers will be in the HOF…
Can you imagine what Baker could do with a great coach like Mahomes has had his whole spoiled career!! The funny thing is, the haters had just been yappin about how Baker can’t drive late for the win. So he goes out and sets another record by doing it so many times. Will they ever learn??
April 10th, 2026 at 10:26 am
Actually WBL it shows how pitiful Munchalot is. The old saying “Everyone can’t be wrong” fits pretty good here.
April 10th, 2026 at 10:28 am
For all you ‘Baker Bashers’ Who was the head coach that led Brady to his ONLY losing record????
April 10th, 2026 at 10:47 am
The truth of the matter is, when all things are considered, the 3-43 team he first got stuck with for 4 years, taking them from that to beating Pittsburg on the road in a playoff game for the FIRST time in 51 years. That’s over half a century for the mentally challenged haters. The ridiculous number of HC that are no longer HC, because they were terrible, that he had to play under 4 in 3 years just to start off his career, 9 OC’s in 8 years, the injuries he has been forced to play through because of not being protected year after year, the leader he is and all his other records and accomplishments of which a superbowl will be added, he will sneak in to the HOF. Cleveland fans know how big of a mistake they made in getting rid of Baker. It has been said it was one of the biggest sports mistakes in history. They would give anything to take that one back.
51 years…
From 3-43 to beating Pittsburgh in the playoffs in 3 years. That IS the quickest turn around of any NFL team in the history of the game.
All BM6 needs to do is win a superbowl and he will be in the HOF.
April 10th, 2026 at 10:52 am
“Actually WBL it shows how pitiful Munchalot is. The old saying “Everyone can’t be wrong” fits pretty good here.”
You just tried to loosely compare Mahomes to Mayfield on the logic that Mahomes plays for Andy Reid.
By that logic Jeff Garcia, Koy Detmer, Kevin Kolb, AJ Feely, & Alex Smith should all be Canton bound, because Andy Reid amirite?
“What is Bakers record in December each of his 3 years in Tampa?”
The BUCS record was 8-2 in December before 2025
After? 8-6. Not the “ah-ha” you think it is Kenton.
“That IS the quickest turn around of any NFL team in the history of the game.
All BM6 needs to do is win a superbowl and he will be in the HOF.”

I’m a lifelong Buc fan, been a Buc fan since the beginning of this franchise
Long before Baker Mayfield was even born
I’m all for team success, not the personal accolades of the players
I don’t care if Baker pass for 5,000 yards, 50 TDs
Don’t care if Bucky run for 1,500 Yards, 15 TDs
I didn’t care about Mike Evans 1,000 yards streak
All l care about is wins, that’s the way it should be
Just win baby!!!
April 10th, 2026 at 11:13 am
What it is
How am I jealous stating facts? What am I jealous of specifically? Those stats are a Google search away…word for word. Per Google:
In the 2025 NFL season, Baker Mayfield experienced a mid-season slump, throwing for under 200 yards in at least five of his last six games during a late-season stretch. This included games with 145, 173, 194, and an injury-shortened 41-yard performance against the Rams. He threw for 203 yards against the Panthers in the season finale.
Don’t be mad at me, be mad at Google or be mad at Baker for his performances. 🤣
April 10th, 2026 at 11:28 am
Baker has way too much short man’s disease for me. And, that is NOT being a true leader. It’s being all about ME-ME-ME. So many people are fooled. It’s nothing more than a smoke screen. It’s not real. It’s all forced. None of it is organic. Go sniff some more salts, Bake. You’re gonna need it LoL. Yeah, that team and those players REALLY “bought-in” last season. Especially, Mike Lmao. It’s all Fantasy. So, keep doin all your ‘in-season’ commercials, while you still can. OR, learn HOW to actually lead and elevate others.

Lakeland Says:
April 10th, 2026 at 5:48 am
Baker Mayfield was accurate in Liam Coen” Dink and Dunk” offense in 2024
But Josh Grizzard mostly ran a vertical passing offense in 2025
Baker wasn’t as accurate last season, because he’s not an accurate vertical passer
———
Grizzard literally ran the same offense – called different plays, but it was still a west coast offense, it was not Arians or Dirk.
Gizzard did call more downfield plays, but it wasn’t anything special. In fact, Baker’s average depth of target was lower than it was in 2023 under Canales.
Average depth of target:
2023: 8.4
2024: 7.0
2025: 8.0
Meanwhile, for example, here’s Winston…
2018: 10.8
2019: 10.4
Some more fun stats…
Completed air yards per completion:
Winston 2018: 8.5
Winton 2019: 8.6
Baker 2023: 5.8
Baker 2024: 5.1
Baker 2025: 5.2
Now, before the Baker Boi(s) throw a fit, it’s not all about ADOT – because, as stated by others, making shorter, easier throws, is another way to move the ball, and as we saw in 2024, when Baker was dinking and dunking, the offense was still putting up points. Short passes are easier to complete, and you inflate your completion percentage, which in turn can do this…
Yards gained per attempt:
Winston 2018: 7.9
Winston 2019: 8.2
Baker 2023: 7.1
Baker 2024: 7.9
Baker 2025: 6.8
So Baker, even in the dink and dunk Coen offense, was getting as many yards per play as Winston was in 2018, and not too far off the pace of Winston in 2019.
Also it shows how bad Baker was last year, which was much worse than in 2023.
April 10th, 2026 at 1:29 pm
All this Baker talk is good for a few giggles. But this season is Baker’s chance to prove he’s a top level QB and earn a fat new contract.
If he doesn’t improve in big games and stop getting himself overhyped, then he will be fine. He relax with the happy feet and deliver accurate passes.
If he does this and the Bucs win, all the haters will disappear.
If Baker doesn’t cut down on the turnovers and losses primetime games and game turns the ball over in the 4th quarter, then the Baker haters can rejoice and brag about how right they were.
Im on the fence with Baker. This year I dont wanna hear about injuries or any other excuse. Just win games or it’s time to move on.
April 10th, 2026 at 1:29 pm
Rod Munch
That’s my point
Baker Mayfield is not a gunslinger, he’s a dink and dunk chain mover
Last year, they threw less to the backs, slot WR
No one is hating on Baker, facts are facts
And the end results are the end results
He should do what he do best, cause he’s not no Dan Marino
April 10th, 2026 at 1:30 pm
Common sense is not hate
April 10th, 2026 at 1:33 pm
Lakeland – Yeah, I agree with you. Last year when Grizz came out after he got the job and talked about taking more deep shots, I pointed out how stupid that was since Baker is not a good deep ball passer, yet can excel when he’s getting the ball out quickly. I never get why coaches don’t just do what works, and always try to change stuff. Baker is what he is, and that’s a guy who struggles when he holds onto the ball and tries to make big plays. But, when he’s got a short rhythm game going, he can use his excellent short accuracy to keep drives going, and all that matters is the points at the end of the drive, not making highlight throws.
April 10th, 2026 at 1:42 pm
He threw for 41 TDs in 2024
But 15 of his passing TDs went for 5 yards or less
That’s over 36% of his passing TDs,
But they make it seems like he was going off like Dan Marino
Throwing deep to Super Duper, and Mark Clayton
April 10th, 2026 at 1:51 pm
You don’t need Liam Coen to get the best from Baker
Just keep his passes short, with a quick release
And let the receiver run for yards after the catch
April 10th, 2026 at 2:26 pm
The quality of blocking went way down last year with Evans and both guards out. By the time Evans came back, we were already turtled and only throwing passes for like 2 yards at a time due to pressure up the middle.
April 10th, 2026 at 3:04 pm
Stpetematt spot on. Notice which position Licht hasn’t addressed in free agency to see where he’s going in the draft…
April 10th, 2026 at 4:06 pm
The idiots are at it again. Baker hit Ebuka in stride with a pass vs the Seahwaks that was in the air for 65 yards. He threw laser darts of 35 yards air born to Ebuka in the end zone 3 or 4 times in the first half of the season. Here is a fact: All QB’s are more accurate on shorter passes than they are on passes greater than 35 yards. These idiots think they have discovered something significant. Review the perfect 55 yard airborn strike tio Tez Johnson in the end zone. The 45 yard pass that Mike Evans was injured on. Go back to your doll house girls. You people are truly insufferable.
April 10th, 2026 at 5:01 pm
if you just dont like baker just say that. some of the idiotic nitpicking like he is supposed to be perfect, no picks, 100% accuracy, yada yada is beyond stupid. it’s childish and moronic to be polite.
April 10th, 2026 at 5:16 pm
Hit dogs hollering
April 10th, 2026 at 5:20 pm
There’s no nitpicking from me, l call it like l see it
I said it last year that Lavonte shouldn’t be a starter
I said that Bucky was overrated and l had doubts about him in 2025
I said that the Bucs had more questions marks than an episode of Jeopardy
I said that Mike Evans was washed up, and his best years behind him
I said that Voc Dennis is not an NFL starting ILB
I said that the Bucs needed to let Cade Otton walk, and upgrade the position
I said that Jason Licht was a poor talent evaluator
Whatever l said about Baker Mayfield is the truth
.
If people don’t like it, that’s their problem, not my problem
April 10th, 2026 at 5:33 pm
Get Baker a strong run game, he need it to be effective
Without a run game, he’s like a deer in the headlights
That was their problem last year, no run game
So Baker had to beat them with his arm, and he couldn’t do it
There’s no shame, he’s not the first QB to fail without a run game
They rushed for over 2,500 yards in 2024 , last season they couldn’t crack 2,000
Bucky dropped from over 1100 to less than 600 rushing yards
They didn’t have a 100 yard rusher in any game last year
Tell Jason Licht to fix the problem, and quit whining about the results
April 10th, 2026 at 6:12 pm
This is what really sunk the Bucs ship last season
Here’s is the results of their leading rusher from last season games
Game 1. Baker 39 yds
Game 2. Bucky 71 yds
Game 3. Bucky 66 yds
Game 4. Bucky 63 yds
Game 5. White. 41 yds
Game 6. White 65 yds
Game 7. White. 38 yds
Game 8. Tucker 42 yds
Game 9. Tucker 53 yds
Game 10. Tucker 43 yds
Game 11. Tucker 42 yds
Game 12. Bucky 61 yds
Game 13. Bucky 55 yds
Game 14. Bucky 60 yds
Game 15. White 39 yds
Game 16. Bucky 19 yards
Game 17. Bucky 85 yards
So they didn’t come close to having a RB with a 100 game
And it started in game one in Atlanta, when Baker 39 yards was the leading rusher
And the low point was against Miami when Bucky 19 yards was the leading rusher
And that’s the game that Bucky lost it and snapped
You can’t have a repeat of this in 2026, it’s pathetic
April 10th, 2026 at 7:06 pm
Lakeland – we have to, and will, shore up the depth of our interior OL. Praying the recovery of Munch and Bredeson goes well and we don’t pull a Wirfs major diagnosis/recovery plan screwup.
April 10th, 2026 at 7:10 pm
Baker was really hurt last year and had a hard time with no interior line protection. Even Barton looked bad at center. On top of all of that Grizzard had no idea how to call plays off of the script. I expect the offense this year to be a lot better. Robinson will actually gameplan defenses and find weaknesses. The WRs and TEs need to step up.
April 10th, 2026 at 7:38 pm
Mayfield’s drop in accuracy might very well be due to injury but it is likely several other factors – an inconsistent, ever revolving offensive line, missing 3 out of 4 of his top receivers for a massive chunk of the season and when they returned, the timing was off and, of course, a totally different O.C. who initially, at least, was far more interested in the long ball than the short, quick throws and letting the skill players get YAC.

Give Mayfield — or any QB — decent protection — and you’ll see more success with deep ball plays.

Yeah Lakelost, you have never been proven wrong about your wild a** Baker claims at all. Everything you have said was the gospel. Wow no need to go any further it would be a waste of time for all.

All this arguing is nauseating.
If Baker was any good don’t you think he would be signed by now lol.
What are you gonna say when he leaves?
Maybe you will leave too.

This is how shallow you haters are. “Baker is a dink and dunk qb of 10 yards or less”. In reality, the “reason” he was so good at the short game is because he had to get rid of it quick or run for his life. He didnt have time to wait and set up the deep ball. When Baker is protected he is as accurate as just about any qb. Definitely considered exceptional.

Did a little deep dive on our qb. It said: in summary, Mayfields deep ball accuracy and overall efficiency in Tampa Bay have ranked him among the TOP 10-15 quarterbacks in the NFL. You Baker haters have been saying all day long how terrible his deep ball accuracy is and anything past 10 yards he just cant do it. Even with badly injured OL, BM6 ranks from 10-15. Top 3rd to top half Im sure depending on protection given. So when he has a decent line he is in the top 10, hmm. Just like you BH have been told a million times but refuse to admit to reality. That’s all right, the internet knows, which means owners and coaches know how accurate he is even though you losers won’t admit it. Proven WRONG YET AGAIN. Some things never change. FACT: Low IQ people never learn from their mistakes.

I hate to tell you Bucco, but Baker Mayfield ain’t goin no where. He will be here for a minimum of 5 years. $45 million for 3 years $135 million contract. He is our best hope of a superbowl with his record setting playoff passer rating of 106.8. When big money is on the line, Mayfield is the best choice and 106.8 proves it. Highest playoff passer rating EVER. Think about that. 5 years, thank goodness. Money Mayfield!!!

So many stats my head is spinning. This team right now needs Baker. He can do it and is our best shot at winning. The coaches need to coach up the players and teac better than they have.. I think Baker has a new QB coach this year from college to help, can’t think of his name.
I think this year is more Coaching pressure than what our QB can do.

@ Well well well – NO. There is NO chance at a Super Bowl. So, there is ZERO best hope. Period.

And, there won’t be as long as this current regime of Lickt, Bowles, and Baker are still here. It must be completely torn down FIRST, and totally rebuilt from scratch. End of Story.

I just can’t believe how quickly some so called Bucs fans forget that the they had Sonoma you injuries on the offense down the stretch last year. The Bucs problems started with injuries to Mauch, Bredeson, Barton Wirfs, Bucky, McMillan, Evans, and Mayfield had a knee, hand, and other injuries I can’t even remember. That is a ton of missed games and playing through pain for an offense. Baker went from being a huge running threat to a pure pocket passer for several games because of the knee issue, and that combined with the oline and receivers being out just killed the offense. One or two key players being out is something most teams can cope with, but having 7 key players .missing multiple games and a QB limping through the last 8 games is too much for any team to overcome. Even Mahomes and Rodgers drop off when banged up. Have some common since and stop acting like 5th graders in a strawman argument because you hate a particular player just because he is your enemy’s favorite or whatever stupid reason you may have. Last year was a too much for a QB to overcome.

Man that Melvin Jr. sure is smart. I vote that the Glazers should just listen to him when there is a question they have. If he says tear it down, they better just tear it down…NOW!!!
