Zac Robinson Talks Kyle Trask

January 29th, 2026

“Kyle, I blessed your return but know your place.”

One of the great Bucs mysteries of this decade revolves around 2021 draft pick Kyle Trask.

Fans still talk about the guy. Even this month, two Todd Bowles friends talked on SiriusXM NFL Radio about how the Trask-Baker Mayfield quarterback competition in 2023 was a sham.

Joe’s referring to ex-QB Jim Miller and former Bucs scout and Jets personnel man Pat Kirwan. Bowles was a guest on their popular show 15-plus times last year.

Trask was re-signed by the Bucs last offseason, a deal that included some guaranteed cash so he wouldn’t hit free agency. Then Trask was cut before the season.

The former Florida Gator had some tryouts and signed with Atlanta on their practice squad in mid-November. A guy who had a hand in that was Faclons offensive coordinator Zac Robinson.

Robinson acknowledged this week that he’s super close friends with former Bucs playcaller Liam Coen, for whom Trask was the Bucs’ No. 2 QB in 2024. Robinson said he and Coen talk regularly, vacation together and their families are friends, the little kids included.

So it’s no leap to think Coen blessed Trask before Atlanta signed him and handed him off to Robinson.

Trask is now a free agent and Joe asked Robinson about him on Tuesday.

Robinson explained there was unified agreement in the Atlanta organization to sign Trask.

“Kyle had a pretty good preseason, it looked like. So, we all felt and kind of connected on it. [We were] able to get Kyle in there. Great guy. Awesome to work with this past season,” Robinson said.

“We never ended up needing him but he was always prepared. And I know he had a good career here; he just hasn’t got a ton of snaps. But yeah, it was cool to get Kyle in there and he was valuable in the quarterback room in ways off the field, as well, with the rest of the quarterbacks.”

Joe wonders if Trask will be back in Tampa this year competing for a No. 3 quarterback job. Most teams take four quarterbacks to training camp. Not only does Trask know what Robinson wants, he’s got all kind of familarity with what’s been happening in Tampa.

Joe gets that the Trask faithful thinks he deserves better, but the NFL didn’t want Trask for months last fall. He needs to take what he can get.

I don’t know how good Trask would be in a game, we really haven’t seen it. I have seen 4 practices the last couple of years and Trask was very inconsistent so I’m not a big supporter of him being a #2 QB. However, he would be great as a #3 or #4 QB in camp – bring him in.

  2. heyjude Says:

Zac was nice in what he said. However, it’s a no to Trask coming back. We need a new 2nd backup to Baker. Maybe someone younger out of the draft. Someone that can step in, is proven. I am not even thinking about Trask vying for 3rd backup but who knows. Stranger things have happened.

  3. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

No one talks about Trask more than Jose does.

  4. Daryl Green Says:

Jesus what is it with this site and Trask, my lord.🤙🏾

  5. lambchop Says:

I thought they shipped him off so Baker didn’t have to “fight in preseason for the QB1”. LOL. If Trask was any good, there would have been teams who lost their QBs signing him off the Flacons PS.

When will people start connecting the dots?

  6. Hugh Glazerhouse Says:

“Are you kidding! This is exactly the kind of guy I want doing #2 when I’m paying Baker so much to do his #1. There’s only so many ex-NFL quarterbacks getting kicked out of high school coaching with teeth issues that I can sign for the cost of a box of Wheaties. Let’s go!” – Hugh

  7. RondeBarberTime Says:

Another wasted article that should have been about the need to fire Toad Bowels.

    It’s the defense stupid.

  8. Old Sombrero Says:

He can’t be worse than Teddy.

  9. Hodad Says:

Bowles doing brother Teddy a favor. No way is he a better QB than Trask.

  10. BucsfaninOregon Says:

The Bucs talk about acquiring guys like Trask while the 49rs publicly announce that they are considering trading for players like (wait for it) TREY HENDERSON, MAXX CROSBY and a TE named PITTS. They admit that trades like this likely would involve potential #1 picks. Someone should whisper to our crack GM that it is the players you have that determines success in the NFL not the number of draft picks you can hoard.

That, ladies and gentlemen, is why the injury laden 49rs played in two playoff games while the Bucs were home watching TV!

  11. Marine Buc Says:

What a huge waste of resources…

We wasted a 2nd round pick on Trask.

We wasted 5 years attempting to train and cultivate this asset.

Then we cut him and sign Teddy Bridgewater?

    WTF?

Our “ring of honor” GM needs to be held responsible for this complete FAILURE!

    How embarrassing…

I liked Trask, and I do think he could have turned out great had he gotten real game experience early on.

But those days are passed, and I’m not certain he could even be a backup at this point.

Bowles pretty much ruined his career by not giving him more attention. At the very least, he could have become a reliable backup.

As to those harping on Jason Licht drafting him…it was not a bad move at all. Arians and Bowles were just too old to want to take a risk on a young QB, so both wanted veterans.

I don’t think Brady was even here at that point.

Hey, bud, the bucs are not talking about signing Trask.

  14. catcard202 Says:

If at the league minimum, maybe…I could see the thought process behind it… Trashcan knows the Bucs & the Bucs know him.

But I would rather see a flier taken on a fresh developmental QB to mold for life after Baker, than see Bucs FO bring back a low ceiling, lower floor option that we all know too well.

Give me Bake, Teddy B, Bazelak + then draft ARK QB Taylen Green…And see where it goes from there.

(IMO, Green has the all the tools to be a special talent in the NFL. Will blow up & raise hi draft stock during Senior Bowl practice week/game and be an easy Day 2 pick for someone.)

  17. 813bucboi Says:

of course Joe would want Trask as a #3 lol….no threat to baker at all lol

Baker needs more competition and less coddling…

sign Malik Willis & Trey Lance…

    GO BUCS!!!

  18. Kenton Smith Says:

813bucboi. If you think Malik Willis and Trey Lance are competition for Baker Mayfield then you’re dumber than I thought you were. So that makes you dumber than a box of rocks.

  19. Pwhiddy Says:

I think Joe mentions Trask cause he knows it was cause all kinds of commotion and rile folks up! All the while Joe is sitting back laughing…

… I love how people today make decisions and have opinions based on like 30% of the facts. That or opinion only makes sense in a vacuum with zero other factors taken into account.

So fun to laugh at but hope these folks only do it with their fandom where it is fun and free…

  20. JD Still Says:

I hope Kyle does he get a chance to actually play somewhere , most of those on here who write about Kyle write in ignorance , they have never seen him play because Bowles absolutely never gave him a chance because Mayfield was his boy and he wasn’t going to ever give Kyle a chance. If Kyle does gets a chance I believe he will do very well, it is interesting that Kyle was picked up by Atlanta where Kyle Pitts is now playing, They were an All American QB/ Receiver battery at Florida, it was late November when Kyle arrived , too late to really get a chance to work together again, now Pitts is a free agent and so is Trask, someone has a great opportunity to to drastically improve their team IMHO, and no one hopes they do more than Jerry Glanville, he was the Coach at Atlanta when they drafted Brett Farve , who Glanville did not like and never gave him a chance, saying the only way Farve would ever get a chance to play for him would be if there was a plane crash , then traded him to Greenbay , the rest is history, so Granville is really really , hoping some one give’s the Kyle’s a chance and they do well because then he would no longer be known as the most stupid man who ever coached in the NFL!

  21. Mveal2006 Says:

Trask doesn’t think he deserves better. He was 2nd string in his and watched b y as a weaker player got time at uf before injuries confirmed what trask and humid fans knew, tgat he is a good qb

Look tge system rewards high draft q
Bs with undeserved playing time because of tge ladies and the advertisement money tge system needs. Winning isn’t everything to most of the planet

Eventually a desperate enough situation will create an opportunity

  22. ATLBUC Says:

Until I see him fail on the field, I am always think he’s better than Baker based on that sham QB competition when he clearly outplayed Baker.

  23. Bojim Says:

    As number 2 QB.

  24. 813bucboi Says:

    kenton smith

if you dont think malik willis and trey lance ARENT competition, you’re deeper in bakers jock strap than we all thought!!!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!

  25. 813bucboi Says:

if you think…damn auto text lol

its ok to come up for air lol k.smith

    GO BUCS!!!!
