Todd Bowles’ Postgame One-Liner Was Not Funny

January 3rd, 2026

Joe did not appreciate Todd Bowles’ one-liner to close his interview tonight on the Buccaneers Radio Network.

Sadly, the Bucs are 8-9 and tied atop the NFC South with the Panthers. Both teams are waiting on the result of tomorrow’s Saints-Falcons game, which will determine the NFC South champion. If the Saints win, the Bucs host a playoff game next weekend. If the Falcons win, then it’s Carolina that will celebrate.

It’s hard to believe the Bucs are hanging on by a thread after a 6-2 start in the NFL’s worst division.

So Bucs players and fans hate the Saints, so does Buccaneers Ring of Honor general manager Jason Licht.

New Orleans is a wretched organization, one that was happy to bounty hunt, which earned former Saints head coach Sean Payton a full one-year suspension. And the Saints nearly ended Chris Godwin’s career with a dirty hit in 2021, among other crimes against decency.

After tonight’s Bucs-Panthers game, a 16-14 Bucs win, team locker room radio reporter TJ “Go Away” Rives mentioned to Bowles that Tristan Wirfs said he simply cannot root for the Saints tomorrow.

Bowles replied, “Tell Tristan he better root for New Orleans.”

Haha, Coach, but nothing about that was funny.

Bowles could have taken the golden opportunity there to apologize to every Tampa Bay fan for helping put them in the ugly position of pulling for a Saints win after a historic Bucs collapse. Nope. Bowles seemed to think there’s a shred of amusement in all this.

Bucs officials too often forget that they ask fans to live and breathe Bucs football every single day. It’s a lot more than a game or entertainment to tens of thousands of people. Many spend money they don’t have on gear and games.

What might Joe tell Bowles about cracking a joke tied to the state of this season? Well, Joe might actually quote Bowles from a few weeks ago. “You gotta fuc*’n care enough where the sh*t hurts. Gotta fuc*’n mean something to you…. You can’t sugarcoat that sh*t. It was in-a-fuc*’n-excusable. And there’s no fuc*’n answer for it. No excuse for it.”

Joe feels terrible for the many fans, including Joe, that will be cheering for the Saints tomorrow. They don’t deserve it and it’s not funny.

Unfortunately, those with autism don’t manage humor very well.

  2. Phred Says:

It seems as if Coach Bowles has surrendered to the inevitable. His time at One Bucs Place is over. At most, he will have to go through the motions one more time.

  3. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

I will not be cheering for the Saints tomorrow. I want no more Toad Bowels! Flush him! We’ll never be anything other than mediocre with him.

  4. Trey Alderson-Cloutier Says:

Just for this quote alone TB must be fired. It’s because of YOU, coach, and ONLY YOU, that we must root for the Saints tomorrow.

Oh and don’t think for a second the saints actually have a chance. Their top WR is out and we have a mini rivalry with them. They’ll likely tank so Carolina gets in because they hate us more.

  5. Paratrooper Buc Says:

If we get to the playoffs, I will feel the least excitement I’ve ever felt for us reaching the post season. Zero pride or excitement as I don’t think we will get a win and if we do then Bowles and his staff will believe they were vindicated so they won’t be fired. Just not feeling it. Sucks to look at the team and feel apathy like this.

  6. Ck Says:

Joe, I want a new coach as much as the next guy, but jeez you are a snowflake. This is a non story. Go to bed, drama queen.

  7. LVMYBUCS Says:

Did we see anything tonight that would make u think this team is a playoff team I lvmybucs but I don’t see us winning in the first round. Lets see him crack a joke then.

  8. Bucsfan2023 Says:

3rd and 24 Coach Bowles owns that.

  9. CT Bucs Fan Says:

I still can’t get over the Falcons game up by 14 pts. What a train wreck that was. Coaching would have won that game.

  10. comadoof84 Says:

It’s just so sad as a fan. 6-2 to complete collapse. 6-2 was the farce with the last minute wins. This organization has been bottom of the barrel the entire year when you look at it collectively. The teams that consistently are in contention have young offensive coordinator minded coaches leading the way. We had one in Liam Coen and let him walk. Fire BA, Fire Bowles. Licht is a good GM. The Tom Brady perfume has worn out to reveal the stink.

  11. unbelievable Says:

Bowles will be here next year either way.

So no matter who wins tomorrow, we fans all lose.

  12. Oahu Jimothy Says:

I won’t be rooting for the Saints tomorrow, but I’ll be rooting against the Falcons.

Bottom line, regardless of who wins tomorrow, Todd Bowles can not continue as the head coach after this season. Apparently it only took one win to fix his attitude towards losing.

    #noconfidence

  13. firethecannons Says:

I am very embarrassed to wear my Bucs gear, just angry about this team losing and unable to perform–just time to fire this loser.

  14. Irishmist Says:

If, you’re looking for a good joke, watch our special teams play. Excluding the kickers.

  15. Vegasbuc Says:

    Fire Todd

  16. Canabuc Says:

Can we root for a tie?

  17. BrianBucs Says:

So basically one bad team beat another bad team.
    Nothing more, nothing less

  18. Told You Says:

We have WAY too much against Todd Bowles to be this petty and lose credibility… I do like that Joe is more vocal this year. I was begging Joe to call for Bowles head the last two years, and he was too chicken too. He hid behind he does not select coaches.

  19. Thisisouryear!!!! Says:

I get it. I’m rooting for the saints but I also want a new coach regardless of how many games we win.

We need to push the score. This offense can score 35 points per game. This garbage game plan is awful.

  20. FrontFour Says:

Good lord, Joe. Lighten up. I listened to the interviews with both Wirfs and Bowles on the drive home and thought they were both funny. We sat in the rain for four hours and won. It ok to enjoy it.

  21. ChiBuc Says:

Joe, I feel you. I’ve paid more than any reasonable should to see this team lose in Detroit (2x), have more orange jerseys than any sensible adult should own, have dipped into family vacati9n funds to travel and represent this club/my home town… but at this point, with an entire city calling for Bowles’s head and an inevitable firing eminent, I’m giving the guy a pass on a relatively benign comment. I don’t need to see someone with their head in the guillotine grovel to understand the stress they are experiencing. With that said, Mr. Licht could easily step up to a mic and apologize on behalf of his team’s current situation. Will he? Doubt it, because leaders lead

  22. Sal Volatile Says:

Thank you Joe for bringing to the attention of the owners and head coach their very own words. That statement from Bowles was not a thoughtless dumb remark from an intelligent man. It was a blatant showing of his arrogance. I hope he is feeling false confidence regarding his job but I’m not so sure of that.

  23. Jmarkbuc Says:

Toad, with a little gallows humor..

  24. KC Buc Says:

Yeah I feel sick to my stomach rooting for the Saints…disgusting but I love my Bucs enough to make the sacrifice. It’s not a joke Todd…your 2025 defense is tho

  25. Joe in Michigan Says:

Does anyone really listen to anything Bowles says, anyway? It’s not what you say, it’s what you do, and Bowles COACHES SCARED. The odds of winning games in the NFL while playing not to lose are not high, not against a good opponent.

  26. Stanglassman Says:

If people spend money on Bucs gear that can’t afford who’s fault is it?

  27. 76doug Says:

Seems crazy to root for the Saints only to get our as$kicked in the first round. But if it gets Bowles fired all the better.

  28. Sal Volatile Says:

I didn’t watch or listen but I did follow gamecast.

Why? Why today? Why at home? I’m perplexed at how the team could pull a rabbit from the hat after failing miserably for weeks.

And Bowles seems to make light of it.

Is this all just part of the kayfabe ?

  29. Ballwasher61 Says:

I echo a lot of the “shouldn’t have come to this” sentiments but it was a spontaneous comment. let’s not get too deep with it. Even if they make the playoffs and/or win games I still fire the entire staff and take a long look a the GM too. I wouldn’t have said that before but I am seeing a lot of holes on this team and this last victory, which was still a crap victory and made way more difficult than it should have been, is no reason not to look at the entire body of work. Played well in bad conditions but had that team by the throat and AGAIN made it hard on themselves. Morrison looked a lot better, Parrish did too except for that candy push against their reciever.

  30. TomMoore4President2028 Says:

I’m with @Frontfour, there’s enough legitimate things to be annoyed about. This isn’t one of them

  31. Lakeland Says:

    Todd Bowles isn’t going anywhere
Getting fired is his least worry

  32. Kidfloflo Says:

U know what’s not funny…having the over total of 9.5 games with 1k on it…sitting at 6-2…and finish with 8 wins!!!

  33. D-Mac Says:

Bowles is a dead man walking. A lame duck so to speak.

  34. Rod Munch Says:

That was some emo writing I don’t expect from the Joes. Wow.

  35. Tony1775 Says:

Makes me sick hearing they did their job today, and have to wait until tomorrow. If 8-9 record is your job than get a new one.

  36. Lakeland Says:

    I don’t blame Todd Bowles.

I would be cracking jokes also
If he go, or if he stays, he still gets paid

There’s a lot to laugh to laugh about

It’s beginning to look that way. The owners ineptly rode into a box canyon and have no way out.

Wanted to say no to BUCS making playoffs just so Bowels and his staff would get fired, but I couldn’t root against the BUCS

  41. Tony1775 Says:

Never forget Bowles called an all-out, Cover-0 blitz on the final defensive play, which resulted in Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford connecting with a wide-open Cooper Kupp for a 44-yard gain ending our playoffs run.

  42. Baking with the next one Says:

    7-10 didn’t come.
But I’m Not rooting for falcons or saints.
    It’s in God’s hands.
I don’t want a coach that quits on his players.

  43. Steven007 Says:

Jesus, what a nothing Burger. I kept reading and reading to wait what this horrible line was. And then I got there. And I wondered why an article was written about this. Still wondering

  44. Cleanhouse Says:

A falcons win and 4 in a row by us and we’re Super Bowl champs!

  45. Sal Volatile Says:

I am starting to sense that the owners will adhere to the old adage “When in doubt do nothing.”

  46. Mobucs Says:

Analyzing humor is counterintuitive, but I’ll try, Joe. Why are you so offended by Bowles’s lighthearted response, but seem to be perfectly content with Wirf’s more contemptuous one about the Saints? Neither, to my mind, was funny ha-ha, but both were amusing, given the situation. Surely, it is in Wirf’s best interest that the Saints should win and he will be happier if they do. The humor is in the conflict that arises when one’s own happiness depends on the happiness of a rival. The joke is on our twisted human nature whose competitive instincts demand that we and our rivals cannot simultaneously he happy. For us to feel like winners, we demand that there be losers.

  47. Sal Volatile Says:

It almost appears like the team really didn’t want to win but had to win or else.

  48. LFG Bucs Says:

I have picked Atlanta in my pick’em pool so there is a good chance that New Orleans will win.

It seems to me the words are less important that the attitude.
In my mind Bowles has nothing to be lighthearted or amused about.
Unless, he knows he will keep his job. That is the height of arrogance.

  50. Sal Volatile Says:

Perhaps Bowles is thinking to himself; “You guys thought you had me. Well we’ll see who gets the last laugh.”

As a Bucs fan, I WANT the Saints to beat the Falcons. I WANT the Bucs to make the playoffs. I’m a BUCS FAN for crying out loud!

    Get over the Bowles one-liner.

    He’s right.

Regardless of the f cked up circumstances.

I love you Joe, but THIS Todd thinks this post is ridiculous.

Don’t be the Karen of the NFC South.

  58. Itzok Says:

  60. BucFan4Life Says:

I’m happy that the Bucs found a way to win against a mediocre team today but I’m with Tristan , there’s no way you’ll catch me cheering for the Aints tomorrow.

The Bucs do not deserve a spot in the playoffs. They proved this with their lack of effort and lack of focus/intensity over the last 7 weeks.

Why don’t I want them to win the division again? It would be embarrassing to watch this team that cannot cover receivers or rush the quarterback or tackle in a one and done game. It is not just a defense/’special’ teams issue either. Somewhere on this coaching staff, somebody thinks that shutting the offense down after getting a ten point lead in the first quarter is a formula to win. Picture this team competing against a 12 and 4 team to go on…. You like that?

The Bucs do not deserve to win the division, neither does Carolina for that matter, but I’m a Bucs fan and Inspired Change is needed to end this error and improve. Too much has been squandered over the last 5 years. Fix it.

  61. Ryan Says:

Get a grip, Joe. A completely harmless remark by Bowles.

  62. Bucschamp Says:

  63. Southern BucLife Says:

My bookie has informed me that the Saints will win tomorrow !!! The gamblers want TB in the playoffs ( did you hot see the 2 blatantly bad calls against Carolina 1. Ripping off the Helmut and 2. Pass interference against the panthers ??? WE WILL BE THE #4 SEED IN THE NFC .

  69. sethery Says:

  71. Bosch Says:

I’m with Tristen. I hate the Saints even more than I hate the Falcons. Buc don’t deserve to e in the playoffs and the Glazers need to stew about that loss of Revenue thanks to the Bowel Movement who the rewarded with a contract extension.

  72. Sly Pirate Says:

    SPOT ON, JOE

Where was the apology to fans, to Licht, and to the organization? Where’s the ownership as the HC?

Bowles mentor, Bill Parcels, would have chewed Bowles out for that comment.

Bowles is soft. He lacks professional integrity.
