Dave Moore: Too Many Big Plays Allowed By Bucs

October 20th, 2025

Early rust. Again.

Speaking on the Buccaneers Radio Network immediately after the 24-9 Motown mugging, Bucs game analyst Dave Moore didn’t want to hear anyone throwing roses at the Bucs defense.

Did they play well at times? Yes, Moore said. But it wasn’t good enough.

“The defense played well, at times,” Moore said. “But there were too many big plays.”

Who knew that the Jahmyr Gibbs’ 78-yard touchdown run in the second quarter was the game-winner? That was what Moore discussed.

Take away the big plays, maybe this game has a different outcome.

“Defense kept us in the game,” Baker Mayfield said on the Buccaneers Radio Network after the game.

The defense played well at times, like Moore said, but not a complete game. And the Bucs needed a complete defensive shutdown tonight.

    Just announced:
Mike Evans with a broken collarbone

  2. Rod Munch Says:

The defense gave up 24 points.

    They did their job.

  3. Miller5252 Says:

Team as a whole sucked tonight. Didn’t come to play at all again on prime time. Gotta find a way to show up when it matters and out physical a team. Won’t go very far until they figure that out.

  4. Rod Munch Says:

Are you kidding me? The defense needed to do more? They bailed out Baker like a dozen times at least, and got BS calls going against them all night. The Lions first TD was on a push off, where St Brown literally shoves Parrish to the ground and it’s not called, then the 2nd TD came off the Bucs defense made a 3rd down stop, only to have the refs make up a BS call vs Dean, after a Lions WR ran with his head down straight into Dean and knocked him down – and Dean got a call against him. Give me a break about the defense being an issue. They gave up 24 points, which is better than anyone should have expected, in particular considering how awful the offense was tonight.

  5. Oxycondomns Says:

lets face it detroit just have better players gibbs , st brown, hutchenson. maybe bucs can cut the gap with bucky and macmillan.

  6. Les Says:

WELL THAT WAS A GOOD OFFICIAL DEFENCE WOOPEN. LIONS D IS NO JOKE .HOW MANY YEARS WE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS DEFENCE TO GET BETTER SECONDARY HAS NOT FOR YEARS . PASS RUSH PLAYERS ? SOMETHING HAS TO CHANGE .

  7. PSLBucfan Says:

    We need a Hutchinson.

  8. Bucfan1988 Says:

Linebacker play is costing us this year…..
SVD just doesn’t have the instincts of where to be.

Somebody shoulda been spying Jahmyr Gibbs ALL GAME.
If it was supposed to be Dennis then what the heck happened??

Our defense did play hard and caused some problems but Baker being so off tonite killed them…

Then you have the Refs that decided to take bribes from Dan Campbell and not follow the stated NFL rules when it comes to simultaneous catches and how challenges work…

  9. Ryan number 1 bucs fan Says:

No the refs bailed the lions offense all night our O was 100% the problem

  10. Vegasbuc Says:

Play It Again scrubs and got your butt handed to you. Old line was a joke Baker Mayfield can’t throw a pass unless you’re 10 ft tall

  11. Bucfan1988 Says:

Ryan, yep the refs were absolutely putrid and they did some blatant BS tonite when it comes to NFL rules….

    We need a Hutchinson.

    ———–

Or we need other teams to have Sucke or Heck at RT, the results would be the same.

Meanwhile, go look at what Hutchinson did when he faced Luke. I’ll cut short the research for you – the answer is, he did nothing, was blanked.

  13. ElioT Says:

Lions are just that much better. – They did their best keeping the Bucs in the game.

Bucs roster is paper-thin and was totally exposed.

Without Baker playing out of his mind to start the year, they’d be 2-5 easily.

Horrible game by Baker, bad game by Grizzard.

  14. BucfanDMV Says:

Bucs are going to have to address the LB player … David included you can’t expect him to keep that level up at this point he’s going to get beat at times.

  15. Fanofdabucs Says:

The refs were straight TRASH! Sure the Bucs got beat..yada yada yada.

But that doesnt excuse the refs. St. Brown push off on 1st TD. Then St Brown runs into Dean who held his ground. That was a game changing call as instead of getting the ball back, Gibbs scores on next play. The INT that wasnt an INT. The over turn on the spot that wasnt “clear and obvious”. The missed trip, leg whipp on the Baker sack by McNeil. The Lions DB making illegal contact all night on Bucs WRs.
Sure Baker sucked, the defense gave up too many big plays, but none of that changes the fact the refs sucked ass AGAIN!

  16. gp Says:

Just off the top, the Gibbs TD should have been called back for holding, and the horse collar tackle of Evans before the ball got there should have AT LEAST been a PI call. Plus 15 for the horse collar.
These refs are destroying the game!
How much DID they get paid anyways?

  17. Will Says:

This game is squarely on the offense. I’m not a fan of our defensive coordinator but he did enough to get the win tonight. Voss is trash though and it’s time to let Nelly go. I like what we do on offense with the “I’m that man” mantra or whatever it is BUT it’s not working for the defensive side of the ball. We need some attitude out there. That Detroit defense rallies to the ball and makes sure tackles I’d love to see that from our defense. Hutchinson is a game wrecker DAMN it’s fun to watch him rush the passer.

  18. Rod Munch Says:

Horrible game by Baker, bad game by Grizzard.

    ——–

I don’t disagree, Baker has been playing great, tonight he played awful. Just don’t let it become a bad game streak and we’re fine.

Also, I disagree with the Lions are that much better. On a night where the Bucs played a terrible game, and the refs gave the Lions multiple touchdowns, and rewrote the rules on the fly to award the ball to the defense on a tied reception, the Bucs were still in it, in the 4th. Give the Bucs one player back, Luke at RT, and likely this game comes down to the last play. Give the Bucs back Luke, Bucky and Godwin, the Bucs have a very good chance of winning even on the road.

  19. Durango 95 Says:

When you are trying to separate gnat s(p)it from pepper to try to find a silver lining. Saying the defense played well is pretty much all that is left.

Todd Bowles does not know how to prepare his team for big games he’s been doing this same thing every year and if you can’t see that, I don’t what to tell you. I have said it a hundred times. He does it every year and some of you act like you wake up in a brand new world every single day. And you come upon with..it was Mayfield…it was the defense…it was the special teams. Lol.

  20. dennis Says:

who said dennis was spying gibbs. he gave up one play 54 was terrrible in run gane today gave up 2 td.

  21. SBucs Says:

Maybe when the Bucs get a defensive coordinator then they’ll play well against the bigger boys during night games.

  22. Tucker Says:

The defense did enough Baker had an off night it happens tough to see but it’s time to move on to beating the brakes off the saints.

  23. Hodad Says:

Good defense is not letting them waltz down the field on the opening kickoff scoring way to easy. This game was over when Bowles deffered the ball to the second half. Defense was great except for the big play TDs lol.

  24. Gofortheface30 Says:

Defense was fine frankly. They caused turnovers, got big stops and Gibbs long run was pretty much a broken play. Gibbs didn’t even get touched. I don’t want to hear about injuries on offense. They went up to Seattle against a tougher defense and dog walked them. The offense from Baker on down shi the bed. They weren’t prepared, receivers were getting locked for the most part and Baker was sailing passes all night. Also great to know Evans can’t even make it a half anymore. There needs to be continuity at the receiver position

  25. gp Says:

I’m not a Bowles apologist. I was vocal about firing him after giving up in the loss to Detroit in the playoffs two yrs ago.
But he didn’t lose this game. Hell, he even used our time outs at the right time IMO.
Baker didn’t have his best game, but just HOW MANY “best” games do you expect out of him when so many of his starters are on the sideline?
    The D did enough.
Nope, the blame lays squarely on the refs without question.
Team Glazer should file an official complaint. And then blast it all over the media!

  26. dmatt Says:

The defense got bullied first half but tightened up later on. This was a poorly coached game on offense. We made an entire secondary of backups n practice squad players look like pro bowlers. They were coached up to be head hunters who played very aggressive. Baker overthrew multiple players due to what I believe was an injury he tried to mask. He was his usual self as a runner. Once Tez master the offense he’s gon be a playmaker. SVD should be benched and let’s try the rookies Bullard n Nick Jackson. I guarantee they are hungry. I’m disappointed in Hassan Reddick n Chris Braswell, is he a JTS 2.0? It seemed to me that our players kept slipping n falling without contact. Detroit is very beatable when opponents can tackle n wrap up well .

  27. Daryl Green Says:

    Dennis. Is straight trash Period.

  28. Mobucs Says:

gp, I agree totally about the Evans play and don’t understand how the illegal contact was overlooked. The injury was caused by the early chop on his shoulder and pad area. It was clear on the replay, but no comment was made. Thanks for bringing it up.

  29. Bucfan1988 Says:

Dennis, I never said SVD was spying Gibbs.

I said someone shoulda been doing it all game. If it was supposed to be SVD then he did a crappy freaking job of it.

    I didn’t see LVD54 causing TD’s with missed tackles???
I saw SVD out of his gap multiple times and Gibbs kept cutting it back to those holes….

  30. Aqualung Says:

All due respect to Dave Moore.

The offense scored 9 fargin points. That’s it. The. End.

  31. Cam Says:

Dennis is Terrible. End of story. We don’t need to trade for wide out. We need a linebacker.

  32. HeartyDickerson Says:

Our recently drafted/signed defensive players have been wildly overrated. The local media has prematurely overhyped based on small sample sizes and OTA highlights.

Kancey, Dennis, Reddick, McCollum, Winfield, Braswell…none of these guys are living up to their draft status or salary.

  33. Bucs Guy Says:

Offense never adjusted to the aggressive D. WRs needed some double moves. I know this is hard when the OLine doesn’t give Baker time.
