“Josh Grizzard Came Into His Own”

October 7th, 2025

So who predicted the Bucs would have a top-10 offense following starting offensive linemen missing a combined nine games, Mike Evans missing two, Chris Godwin missing three and Bucky Irving missing one after he struggled in the run game?

Joe can’t raise a hand, but that’s where the Bucs offense is.

Rookie offensive coordinator Josh Grizzard has kept the offense adjusting, diverse, creative and on track. Most important, he’s got Baker Mayfield playing his best football, which is Grizzard’s No. 1 priority, along with keep Mayfield off the ground.

Grizzard also has proven himself under pressure as he battles growing pains in his gig as a first-time playcaller.

Those who watched the Eagles-Bucs game on TV heard the story of Tom Moore advising Grizzard to learn the timing of playcalling by watching a college game and calling the whole thing with the Bucs playbook. Obviously, Grizzard hit the ground running to start the season.

Todd Bowles spoke in a reverent tone about his playcaller yesterday on SiriusXM NFL Radio.

“I really thought Josh Grizzard came into his own [against Seattle], as well,” Bowles said. “He did a heck of a job keeping all of those guys involved and those guys executed the gameplan very well.”

Joe wrote a bunch of times how Grizzard was the biggest X-factor entering this Bucs season. He’s answered the bell.

Let’s not let this one leave the building this time and the end of the season

  2. 813bucboi Says:

    Grizz was great!!!!

Todd sure does know how to pick em!!!!!

very impressed with Grizz’s use of our personnel…all of our weapons are getting fed!!!

    4-1!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!

  3. Bucs15 Says:

He seems to be able to adjust the game plan accordingly to who we have available. Last week he started sprinkling some creativity in. Bitter sweet for us fans since if he does too good of a job, some team will hire him as HC.

  4. Keydoc Says:

Good to improvement on 3rd down, great to see Baker sliding and avoiding the big hits, nice to see white playing with smarts and determination; Griz should only get better and the overall health of the offense; should be a fun season for Bucs fans

  5. infomeplease Says:

Off to a great start. Once the right side of the O-line got stabilized he opened up the playbook! More to come against San Francisco. Get it done JG! LFG!!

  6. Tucker Says:

Godwin is still kinda missing hopefully he gets back to the Godwin of old soon.

  7. Bob Azrak Says:

It’ll be even better when all receivers are healthy and TEZ gets more experience. Passing game is Grizz’es strong point. Better “Long game” will wear out DB’s.

  8. BridleOaksBuc Says:

Canales is being arguably successful in Carolina.
El serpiente is doing spectacular in Jax where others failed.
If/when we lose Griz (hopefully after next year), are we all talking about a Todd Bowles offensive coaching tree?!

  9. Beeej Says:

Dude looks young enough to have a paper route, I think we’re safe from him being filched for a year or two

  10. KABucs Says:

If Chris Godwin catches that bobbled pass:
Baker – 30 for 33 at 90.9% completions. That pass was on the money and Chris is usually good for those.

When he knocks the rust off, we get Mike back and then we get Jalen back… and of course Bucky…. WHOA! (like Neo watching Morpheus jump building to building)

  11. Rayjay1122 Says:

We are also very fortunate to have Tom Moore on our side.

  12. Colddecked Says:

With Wirfs back, he can start getting a little creative. Is it weird I actually love watching him block?

  13. buc4evr Says:

The fact that Bake was moving in the pocket and rolling out really opened up the situational passing game. Think Grizz’s scheme makes that possible. Would like to see improvement in the running game play calling. Some of the trick running plays didn’t work. It is likely because the O line is struggling ?

  14. Coburn Says:

Only nitpick I would have is too many throws behind the line of scrimmage that just ended up costing us yards. Otherwise was a pretty great day

    THIS!!!!!

  16. heyjude Says:

Todd is great at picking his Offensive Coordinators. So great that they have a career trajectory to Head Coaches after a year. If Grizz keeps getting even better, lock him in for at least another two years.

  17. AMI_Chris Says:

I’m pretty grumpy about the defense and special teams but the offense has been spectacular all around. Kudos to the players for executing and to the coaches for coaching.

  18. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

Can he coach special teams and DL as well?

  19. Freddy PA Moxie Says:

    Two words:

    1. Extension

    2. Raise

  20. Durango 95 Says:

“Bowles knows how to pick them”.

Bowles just can’t seem to hold on to them.

  21. Adam's Angry Says:

Maybe we can keep him for more than one season.

  22. Hodad Says:

At some point it’s more important keeping that OC, QB conection going than having Todd Bowles as your head coach. Yeah Todd has had good luck, or good input from Baker picking OCs, but what happens when his luck runs out? Coen is proving even a first year HC can find a good DC, but that QB play caller thing should come first. Don’t lose Grizzard for Bowles.

  23. BucVoyager Says:

Can’t stop him from leaving to be a head coach if someone decides he’s their guy. That’s why I’m not mad at Coen. We all are trying to get paid our worth. I don’t see it happening right now but he should get some looks if he keeps it up.

  24. PanhandleBuc Says:

He called a very balanced and creative play calls! I hope that misdirection/ backhand flip plays is tried again. LOVE that Tez got more involved. Last week a poster commented about not understanding the love for Tez and referred him to Darden 2.0…hope they were paying attention. You can’t coach speed!!! Keep it up Griz!

  25. Aqualung Says:

What if he had a defense that could stop opposing quarterbacks?

  26. orlbucfan Says:

Getting tired of the Bowles-bashing on here. Bowles is the reason why Grizzard moved up, and Baker Mayfield is even making snotty rags like the NYT notice the Bucs. One thing I caught listening Sunday is Grizzard is starting to open up the offense. That’s something neither Canales nor Coen did, and it drove this Bucs fan nuts! I hope this means that Grizzard is getting more confident as an OC. He listens and defers to his players. He’s not ready for the pressure and demands of being a HC. He’ll be here next season. Go Bucs and Grizz!!!! Beat the 49ers, but watch out for the refs!

  27. 813bucboi Says:

What if he had a defense that could stop opposing quarterbacks?
    ***********************************************************

    he does!!!!

    LVD proved that!!!

    4-1!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!

  28. PanhandleBuc Says:

Aqualung – Imagine if we had a competent ST squad…

    We would be 5-0.

And maybe if the refs called 1 of the 3-4 holding calls on jersey pulling Mitchell.

  29. Durango 95 Says:

Some of the quality posts above remind me of my..

    Secure Coen 2025 campaign.

    What could have been.

    Instead.

We ended up with the weakest link.

  30. BigPoppaBuc Says:

I mean, over the top to Buka on third and 13!? That’s how you win ball games. The coaches have been aggressive in the right times and the guys are coming up clutch. Grizzard still throws away a few downs running up the gut. I’d like to see what he does with a nice lead in the fourth quarter. We finally started fast, hopefully that keeps up as well.
Getting Luke back will be huge, too. If the bookends are protecting Baker there is no defense that can cover our weapons.

  31. MelvinJunior Says:

I caught that last night about the college games. Crazy, because I was going to say the exact same thing last week… I didn’t, because I knew there were LOTS of ignorant, single-minded, old people on here! But, I was going to say, that he needs to sit and really watch A LOT of college football. Even, play some EA NCAA Football & Madden. Certain situations will become second nature and you will become much more immediately, reactive. Surely, they all use it (VR) by now! I mean, there were a handful of college teams that started using EA and Madden probably, 15-YEARS AGO. Chip Kelly at Oregon was HUGE on it, especially with his QB’s and then with the rest of the entire team. Lock-in and stay focused. DON’T waste plays. I didn’t like our ‘opening drive’ again this past Sunday, but all-in-all, everything was still A LOT better. If you want to hear THE PERFECT breakdown of how an offense should look, you HAVE TO listen to Drew Brees’s breakdown of Shane Steichen and the Colts. It’s all about RYTHYM. Three steps, plant, & BOOM… Outta the QB’s hand in 3-seconds or less… Use the passing game as a running game. Quick. Tempo. Then, hit the seams downfield, etc. It was VERY GOOD. He said that Baker & Goff is his Top-2 MVP Candidates by the way, and has the Bucs in his Top-5. So, before you get your panties all in a wad over someone who played for another team, other than your precious Bucs, he speaks very highly of the Bucs every week. And, he even said today, that the FIRST thing he does every week, is wait for Baker’s postgame press conference. He wants to hear what Baker SAW during those final game winning drives!!!! I would like to see them go ‘no-huddle’ at times, like Cohen… They don’t have to go super fast with it all the time, but it forces the defense to not substitute, & etc. They need to BURY teams and wear them DOWN, when they get out to an early lead. Don’t take their foot off the gas. Go FASTER. It was not always perfect, but ‘the flow’ looked A LOT better this week. They’re starting to do a lot more of what we’ve been telling them to do. Before the season, I didn’t think the Bucs would re-sign RWhite, but now I think they HAVE TO. At least, ‘Running Backs’ are CHEAPS. Bucky is NOT a bell-cow… The way to go, is the way of Detroit. We have our version of it, and we need to keep-it together. I’m not saying they are better than, or as good as, what Gibbs and Montgomery are… But, they are close. A poor man’s – and I’ll take that. Cowherd has the Bucs #2 on his “Herd Hierarchy.” He and Nick Wright are doing a HUGE segment on Bake right now, and it is really good. Both, are just DROOLING all over themselves. That Bucs-Niners Sunday Late Afternoon SHOWDOWN is going to be HUGE for us at home.

  32. Durango 95 Says:

At least they were able to keep one of Coen’s guys.

He’s the one that wins games despite massive injuries. Not the one that uses injuries as an excuse for garbage play.

  33. 813bucboi Says:

    COEN IS TRASH!!!!!

the jags will be the JAGS at the end of the season lol

    4-1!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!

  34. Statisticly Insignificant Reader Says:

Some pretty good advice from Tom Moore

  35. ballwasher61 Says:

Some folks that talk about moving a OC to HC hopefully understand that the roles can change dramaticaly. Some complain about Bowles being both DC & HC, and there may be some truth to that because his attention can be diverted at times but only he knows what his plate can handle. Bowles has done very well with what he’s had, among all the injuries across this team, so have the assistant coach’s. I hope that Grizz is satisfied with what he’s doing and having fun doing it and takes some time to get more time under his belt before he makes that leap, if it comes, to HC. But that’s for another day.

  36. GoneGator Says:

Grizz finally had the offense humming. 🏈

Great play calls, great personnel usage, great execution…. Sunday was what I hoped a Grizz led offense could/would look like (and predicted) !

I think he’s turned a corner as OC and I’m much more optimistic than I was a week ago. Our TEAM has shown it can win close games, D battles, shootouts!

Unfortunately we still have the 🤡s kissing Coens ginger a$$ cra$k.

  37. GenocideD Says:

Introducing next year’s Jet’s head coach Grizzard! 🙁

  38. Saskbuco Says:

Does anyone know where you can order the cream sickle hats and hoodies worn on the sideline? I checked NFL website and no luck, looking to order some gear up. Up here in Canada it might be the reason I can’t find any of the new swag.

  39. 813bucboi Says:

    SASKBUCO

    ——

Did you check the official site? Not sure they have the stuff you mentioned but they do have quite a few items including jerseys, hoodies, hats, etc. Many of these type things are creamsicle. Been thinking about adding a Baker creamsicle jersey. It was sold out last I looked. But they do have some decent alternatives. If you haven’t looked you should check it out.

  41. Saskbuco Says:

Thanks everyone, really want that sideline hat Baker and Grizz had on, Baker was wearing during post game

  42. Saskbucs Says:

Grizz has looked good. I can’t say I had much worry there.

I agree with a couple other posters, just a couple too many behind the LOS passes that went backwards. Seattle was all over those. Also didn’t care for the opening run up the middle that immediately put us 2nd and 10 but small potatoes in the big meal here.

  43. Newbie Says:

Wish Bowles had that luck with special teams coach… just saying…

  44. jimmy Says:

the game grizzard called was good, getting 30+ on the board is what this offense is capable of every week, injuries or not. there’s no excuse with this group, injuries or not.

egbukas magic hands help. tez getting some reps was good as well, especially his ability to make two seahawk defenders hurt each other. otten solid catches throughout as well.

it was a very good offensive showing. baker wasnt the leading rusher is how you can tell for sure.

  45. Baking with Grizz Says:

I hope we win the Super Bowl and Bowles retires. If that happens let Grizz be the new HC. It’s a win win situation.

    Go Bucs!!!

  49. Pickgrin Says:

Grizz is less likely to leave after 1 year than his predecessors were – even if offered….

Even if Grizz does get a HC offer and can’t ignore the siren’s call for multi-millions per year – then Thad Lewis will be promoted to OC and ‘continuity’ will be maintained.

  50. Marky mark Says:

Grizz will be coaching b the Saints next year for big money.

  51. Esteban85 Says:

Agree Eric, we must keep this continuity with the offense by keeping Grizz. Look how well Baker looks in year 2 of this offense. He is MVP caliber so far he looks sharp as a razor & extremely accurate
