Good News For Kyle Trask: Michael Pratt Sent Packing

August 13th, 2025

Job security.

Michael Pratt, we hardly knew thee.

Yesterday the backup quarterback position for the Bucs became a little clearer (?). The Bucs released backup quarterback Michael Pratt with an injury settlement. The Tulane product and former Packers draft pick never practiced in this summer’s Bucs training camp due to a bad back.

Joe is of the mind this ends the recent quarterback drama in Bucs camp, when the Bucs began the period by signing former starting quarterback Teddy Bridgewater amid murmurs that presumed No. 2 quarterback Kyle Trask was struggling.

Joe can only guess this is good news for Trask. Pratt was signed by the Bucs last August and his claim to fame in Tampa was being bounced from the 53-man roster to the practice squad and back again several times.

This also suggests Bridgewater will be at least the Bucs’ No. 3 quarterback. Bridgewater did not take a snap in the Bucs’ first worthless preseason game on Saturday night.

Bridgewater also took snaps for the first time this summer on Monday in 11-on-11 drills.

As for Pratt, he never threw a football for the Bucs in a real game.

Thank goodness GB picked him ahead of us in the 7th and we used that next pick for Culp, I’d say we won that one.

    LFG BUCS!!!!

  2. Vanessa Anne Says:

@Enkd, I agree with you on that one. Devin shined last year in the few opportunities he got. I’m looking forward to, and hoping he takes the next step this year.

I’m not sure I agree that this locks or solidifies Kyle as our no. 2 QB.

I think Ira, Lee and Steve nailed it on the podcast when they were talking about the Teddy signing.

Paraphrasing Steve, “the Bucs saw Kyle struggling, not having a good camp, realized the team is in Super Bowl now mode, and did something about it”.

Ira cut Steve off at that point saying that was exactly it. (Again paraphrasing.)

I suspect releasing Michael was part of the plan as well, and have been waiting for that shoe to drop for a few weeks now.

We never saw him in OTAs or rookie camp, so clearly (to me) this is a significant or long lasting injury that’s going to take a while to heal.

In the end, once the season starts, the team will go with whichever backup it thinks gives us the best chance to win, if Baker misses time.

It helps Kyle, but I don’t think it in any way helps to solidify him or Teddy in any particular place in the pecking order.

  3. Hodad Says:

Never saw Pratt as a threat to Trask, because I never saw Pratt. I don’t see Bridgewater as a threat either, he’s come in to late. The Bucs should’ve brought in real competition for Trask like Trey Lance who’s looked good for the Chargers. Maybe next season they seriously consider consider having some competition for the backup job. Pratt was never it, neither is Teddy.

  4. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

    “Murmurs”.

  5. BucforLife Says:

Pratt was never really a threat to Trask imo, I don’t think teddy is either. Teddy was signed at the last minute and hasn’t played in awhile, also has a bad knee. Trask has way more upside at this point in their careers anyhow, you know what you’re getting with teddy and it ain’t much of anything at this point. Trask could come in and surprise everyone in a good way or could just be below average. Let’s just hope the line stays healthy and so does Baker

  6. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

Agreed that Pratt wasn’t going to beat Kyle out for his position anyway. Gotta be Blaine Gabbert to get over on Kyle.

  7. James in Memphis Says:

What does this have to do with Trask. You guys are over blowing the Trask story. LICHT would make himself look stupid cutting a second round pick qb for Pratt or Bridgewater. Stop it. We are just looking for story lines.

  8. Drunk Bucs Fan Says:

I wouldn’t be shocked if KT and TB flip-flopped the number 2 spot a couple of times this year

  9. Pewter Power Says:

Teddy will be the #3 all year then go back to coaching high school football nothing to see here

  10. matthew a veal Says:

my interpretation is that bridgewater is showing enough that pratt or anyone else wasnt needed on a roster spot. i wish the kid well.

remember this, likely almost every kid in america has thrown a football,

to have an nfl qb roster spot means you are a top 100 – incredible. you should do fine with the ladies.

  11. 813bucboi Says:

pratt nor teddy are “threats” to Trask lol….

Trask is the #2 QB on the roster and it’ll be that way all season unless an injury to baker happens….

Licht signed teddy because he’s currently better than pratt and connor while also having vet experience that can help BOTH baker and Trask….

all this talk about Trask having a bad camp is BS….id say baker is having a bad camp…we’ve heard baker committing INTs and Fumbles in several practices….

funny how when baker tosses an INT in practice, folks say, “this is what TC is for”….but folks move the goal post when it comes to Trask lol….

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  12. Old Sombrero Says:

Some people on this site are obsessed with back up QB drama. No team needs or wants backup QB drama because that means your starter is struggling. Be happy we have a legit starter. A backup QB controversy should be organic, not orchestrated. If the backup plays lights out and develops into a starter, great. Bad things happen when you manufacture or force a backup battle. Trask to me is perfect…quiet, coachable, supportive, and most likely will produce when he needs to for a few games. The Bucs organization has had QB drama since its inception. I lived through it. With the exception of Brady and Brad Johnson, there’s a long history of QB issues. I have vivid memories of Chris Chandler and the Testeverde controversy and Chandler running his Yap about how good he is only to go 0-6 as a starter.

What does this have to do with Trask.

Joe is pretty sure that’s explained in the post.

Some people on this site are obsessed with back up QB drama.

“On this site?” LOL Try NFL fans as a whole. You’ve heard the old saying about how the backup quarterback is the most popular player on the team”

  15. explosivo Says:

I think Bridgewater is not just a good insurance policy at QB, but also kind of an additional QB coach – he just won state in his first year as a HS Coach!

I bet he has some great insights into the game, could elevate Baker even more.

  16. miken Says:

    @enkd… great point!
I hate he was hurt, i wanted to see what he could do.

  17. Fred McNeil Says:

Pratt I never heard of except here. Bridgewater was kind of a big deal for about a year or two.

  18. TBbolts Says:

We’ll just ignore our lying eyes and pretend Trask isn’t a solid number two. I’m sure teddy wouldve made the throws Trask completed the other night. Just keep posting rage bait nonsense about Trask struggling. Incredible urinalism on display here as usual.

  19. Oneilbuc Says:

I remember this picture the meadi was expecting Trask to start because he was out playing Baker Mayfield so they thought it was a real competition as well lol 😂😂 !!
