Bucs Sign A Running Back

August 12th, 2025

Why sign a RB?

Joe’s antennae are up.

So yesterday the Bucs signed former Dixie Chicks draft pick and running back Jase McClellan. This is clearly due to Rachaad White suffering a groin injury in the Bucs’ first worthless preseason game on Saturday.

Now here is where the intrigue comes in.

Mere hours after the first worthless preseason game, Bucs coach Todd Bowles told the local pen and mic club that running back Sean Tucker needs more touches.

Bowles seems to like Tucker and there’s plenty to like. When called upon, Tucker usually produces. He blew up last year when the Bucs clobbered the slimy Saints in Lincoln’s Tomb on the bayou.

Yesterday in the first practice since White’s injury, White stood on the sidelines and Tucker had a boatload of carries.

So why McClellan? Joe has to think McClellan is just a body. He was unemployed in the middle of training camp. That tells Joe a lot.

Maybe the Bucs are spooked by White’s injury? Maybe the Bucs are a bit skittish on undrafted rookie free agent Josh Williams missing so much time? Bucs types had Williams on their radars.

It’s hard for Joe to believe that McClellan, a 2024 sixth-round pick, is anything more than camp meat and should be considered real competition for Tucker.

Shoot, Owen Wright didn’t look too shabby on Saturday night.

Sad that Owen is held out for being “sore” from his 18 carries.

Football players ain’t what they used to be.

New dude is just that.. just practice fodder.

  2. LexBloodstone Says:

Looks good when he breaks away, still young.

  3. firethecannons Says:

Owen Wright needs to make the team–he looked great

^^^ owen wright didn’t look great, he looked pretty good…let’s be realistic here

  6. MadMax Says:

Wright please. Maybe this guy was brought in to pick his brain, intel on birdies run plays….lol, like that wouldn’t change since he was there….i dont know.

  7. BigPoppaBuc Says:

They know they’re going to need that run game especially in the early going without Wirfs. Protect those RBs including Tucker. God I hate this preseason feeling. Where we really want to see some football but we just want to bubble wrap these guys till week one, also.

  8. Capt Ahab Says:

The worthless preseason games analysis from Joe is getting old. Preseason games are not anything near worthless for players fighting for a roster spot, or rostered guaranteed players looking to move up the depth chart. Preseason is where jobs are won and lost, where the final depth chart is created.

Joe, I think you are right about bringing on Jase.

Rooting for Tucker, and Owen Wright definitely should be on the Bucs.

  10. Drunk Bucs Fan Says:

Simple math. Tucker gets White’s plays in practice and preseason, Wright gets Tucker’s. New guy gets the Owen Wright leftovers

    ^^^^^^^
You’ve probably been hurt/injured from your couch. Hahaha

  12. Larrd Says:

Tucker was in the last game too long.

  13. Aqualung Says:

Gotta have camp meat so Rachaad and Tucker don’t need to be in the bloody game in the first place. Good. Now we have Josh W back, this Owen Wroght, and the new camp meat. Well done.

  14. Eckwood Says:

It was one game and I hv no idea about his hands and pass protect but O Wright looked really good …………. Some guys styles fit the pro game much much better than others , it was just one game but he looked to be that guy ……….. The LSU back looked great early on and I believe is similar in build to Wright but does he get up field and pick his lane as fast ……… It appears to me the Wright def accelerates and pics his lane with just one lil move ALA Terrell Davis ……… But let’s be real it was one game and he’s def more of Irvings size ………..

Camp meat. Nothing to see here, carry on.

  16. 813bucboi Says:

dang josh williams….i wanted to see him in action

    GO BUCS!!!!

  17. Stpetematt Says:

I think you will this week and most any RB would look good with the size holes we were opening up.

  18. ModHairKen Says:

    Is Bridgewater also “camp meat”?

Show some respect. These guys are working hard in the heat. For little pay. Chasing a fading dream.

How about a thank you and otherwise STFU about these guys.

  19. infomeplease Says:

He won’t make the 52 man roster.

  20. Eckwood Says:

3 TD runs over 10 yards ln half a quarter is not something you ignore ……..how many Bucs have had basically 87 second half yards at 5 plus a pop ? Even in preseason ? Again there’s allot more involved and it’s just one game but that was probably one of the best RB preseason performance s ever . A yard better than Tucker with a big basket of carries .

  21. Brandon Says:

Wright was held out after 18 carries and commentors are calling them soft. They’re soft. During the regular season, Tuesday and Wednesday are install days, not full padded practices. The Bucs gave him the day off as a precautionary measure because he had a lot of carries. Internet warriors these days don’t know when to STFU.

  22. Brandon Says:

The Atlanta RB was signed purely to give guys a break. Tucker SHOULD NOT be getting that many carries in a preseason game. White is hurt. Better to give the unnecessary carries to a guy that will be cut in a few weeks than Tucker, who might still be our most talented RB.

  23. Pewter Power Says:

Didn’t wright come to camp kind of late! Her Tucker don’t need preseason reps at all especially if white won’t be ready

  24. David Says:

Sounds like camp fodder because They only want Bucky and Tucker doing so much before the season.

  25. matthew a veal Says:

maybe he can play special teams better than some of the other guys

maybe he loafed last year and the light might be coming on. raheem i thought can be a little impatient.

  26. View from 132 Says:

I think you are reading this wrong Joe. If Tucker is going to be possibly move up to #2, they need to get him less preseason touches. I think its a sign Tucker made the squad and they need to get carries elsewhere.

  27. Kidfloflo Says:

JOES: I agree with everybody else, the tired, ridiculous phrase of ” meaningless ” pre season games is asinine. Like we’ve ALL said before, ask the players fighting to change their lives and become an NFL starter that, or I don’t know, say a new O.C calling plays for the first time and trying to get his feet wet, or head coach seeing who will make his squad and flesh out ultimately how ur team plays and what kind of record ur going to have, u know the difference between going to the playoffs, or getting himself fired, silly things like that. It belittles all the hard work u do and makes the articles appear frivolous
