Largely Status Quo On Bucs’ New Depth Chart

August 11th, 2025

New Bucs quarterback Teddy Bridgewater.

Preseason depth charts are rarely worth the digital space they occupy, or they paper they’re printed on.

Teams are mandated to release one within days of each game, and the Bucs just dropped theirs in advance of Saturday’s night’s preseason game in Pittsburgh (7 p.m. on WFLA-TV).

Joe’s quick look at the depth chart isn’t spotting any shifts. Shilo Sanders remains a fourth-string safety, for example, and Trey Palmer is listed as the No. 1 punt returner and the No. 4 receiver. Meanwhile, Palmer has barely practiced all summer and is in danger of losing his job.

Recently-signed quarterback Teddy Bridgwater is listed as the No. 5 QB. That should be a clue that these preseason depth charts aren’t worth fans’ time.

  1. Hodad Says:

Even the final 53 isn’t the final 53 till waivers are cleared, and PUP lists are made.

  2. Truth be Told Says:

there is no way Teddy ends up on the Practice squad or they keep 3 QB’s. Trask to the Practice Squad is inevitable. Sorry Gator fans. Go Bucs!

  3. Aqualung Says:

When Trask was interviewed by the sideline person during the game, he came off as a real life Forrest Gump. Like anyone who thinks he’s as good as or better than Baker Mayfield.

  4. LakelandBuc Says:

The Bucs depth chart is day to day during the season

Injuries, demotions are common with the Bucs

  5. buc4evr Says:

Trask is playing too well to be put on the practice squad. He would be snapped upon a minute by another team as a backup.

  6. Power Of Pewter Says:

Bridgewater gets released on cut day so his contract isn’t guaranteed, then resigned to practice squad. Trask will be the active game-day #2, but Bridgewater will be the starter if Mayfield misses some games.

  7. Aqualung Says:

    Or not.

  8. Trask To The Future Says:

Trask to the practice squad. LOL

All the anti-Trask homers on this site are hilarious.

  9. Tye Says:

Bridgewater has a lot or cons than pros…..
Injury prone is at the top of that list….
There is a good reason he has not been sought after!

  10. Larrd Says:

Bowles has been stressing versatility in different position groups all camp. I bet he’s planning on keeping three QBs.

  11. BucforLife Says:

Truth be Told… Teddy hasn’t played football in nearly two years and had a serious knee injury not long when he was playing. Before that he wasn’t that great, not gonna be a guy who wins a lot of games if baker goes down. Not saying Trask would win a lot of games but he definitely has more potential and more upside at this point in his career than teddy does. Trask will be second string quarterback just watch.

    K McLaughlin

Fill in the blank for the rest…but those guys will be on the team!!

  13. ModHairKen Says:

Trask is going on the practice squad. That’s just stupid.

Bridgewater is not making the team, barring an injury. Although, he should be added as a Coach as a giant FU to the FHSAA.

  14. Scott Says:

I was a huge Jameis and Bridgewater guy when they were coming out. I saw Teddy at his last bowl game against Florida and he looked like a really good QB. It’s been 13 years since then. He a vet now and I hope to see him get some play time this preseason.

  15. Scott Says:

I agree with BucforLife that Trask has some more upside possibly. Bridgewater is a great addition though and definitely will be competitive and very helpful in the QB room. He wil make a push for that backup spot. Solid move with 3 good QBs in their own ways.

  16. Aqualung Says:

    I don’t know anyone who is “anti-Trask.”

But the people who are “for good quarterbacking” know, he ain’t it. College doesn’t translate to the NFL more than 50% of the time, and that’s in the first round. And if you watched every Gator game he played in, like I did, you know he’s the next Mike Glennon only not as good or with as strong an arm.

  17. Capt Ahab Says:

Teddy Bridgewater might have experience, he’s not a good QB in the league of the NFL. I’ll roll with Trask all day and everyday as the Bucs back-up QB over a failed over the hill Bridgewater.

  18. Captahab Says:

What is the fascination with Teddy Bridgewater? Absolutely no accomplishments to speak of. I suppose a practice guy squad guy as as an insurance policy in case of injuries to Mayfield and Trask.

  19. Aqualung Says:

Well Trask has so many accomplishments, like….um….nearly blowing a Georgia game in which he clonged three passes off of the chests of Georgia defenders in the second half, each would have been a pick 6. He sucks, people.

  20. Capt Ahab Says:

While I understand Bridgewater has a lot of experience, his TD to Int is positive, I have to believe he’s the ultimate insurance policy on the practice squad just in case. I can’t imagine he would supplant Trask who knows this offense.

  21. Capt Ahab Says:

Aqua, Trask was the reason why the Gators were in that game, apparently you didn’t watch.

  22. Capt Ahab Says:

I’m a Florida State Seminole, but I paid attention to Trask with the Gators.

  23. Capt Ahab Says:

The Alabama SEC game he was stellar with an inferior squad around him.
Not a Gator fan, just call it as I see it.

  24. adam from ny Says:

that depth chart doesn’t mean sheet at this point…

they’re not gonna rock the boat until the boat needs to be rocked…

the tsunami comes when roster cut downs must be in…until then it’s pickleball season

    —————–

add in the punter dixon and long snapper, deion jones, one more receiver or rb, ko keift, chukwuama, maybe opeta, merriweather, maybe one of the two young linebackers……maybe shilo or jj roberts…and that’s really about it…maybe miller too

and a couple random pieces of meat to take up space for godwin and wirfs early on…?

really that is basically you team…unless there are surprises…like maybe no greg gaines or something like that…

maybe the ghost of will gholston returns to demand his #92 jersey back from dixon

  26. adam from ny Says:

brass might be whispering to each other:

“dang maybe we moved on bridgewater a week too early”

  27. BucforLife Says:

Aqualung..you clearly didn’t watch Trask when he was at Florida because if you did you would know he’s the best quarterback they had since Tebow. He helped light up the sec and was leading one of the top offenses in the country just didn’t help that the defense did not help at all. He most certainly did not suck or he wouldn’t have been a heisman finalist. He was a great qb at Florida you just a negative person on the bucs backup

  28. LongtimeLkldBuc Says:

    Adam from NY….
I didn’t add the rest because they are still up in the air. I believe the 40 or so guys I listed are all locks!!

  29. adam from ny Says:

    @LongtimeLkldBuc:

yep i was just expanding on it to sorta fill out the 53 in a whimsical manner…

not many roster spots are up in the air really…under 10 for sure, because a few of the guys i tossed in are locks as well…

    a few, not a lot, but a few…

44-45 of 53 seem like locks – but honestly you never know…there’s always that surprise cut or two from teams

  30. adam from ny Says:

also like half our roster cut downs can be picked up by just tenessee alone…

    that’s how bad their 2nds and 3rds are……lol…facts

  31. Brandon Says:

    LongtimeLkldBuc

You lost ALL credibility when you put Shepherd on the team. There’s a ZERO percent chance he is on the final 53. Your number 4-6 WRs HAVE to play special teams… what special teams does Shepherd play? Better yet, why would they waste a roster spot with Shepherd as the #5 when they could get a young guy in there? Just beyond stupid, you wasted your time because after that mistake, your list was garbage.
