QB Rankings And Baker Mayfield

July 24th, 2025

Baker Mayfield isn’t impressed.

Everywhere you turned this offseason, Baker Mayfield was ranked by somebody — media, a survey of NFL people, beer-swillers in Largo — to be a top-10 NFL quarterback.

So what are your thoughts about that Baker? Are you even seeing that noise?

Joe asked the Bucs’ quarterback today.

“I don’t really think about them,” Mayfield said. “Most of the people that vote on them haven’t played the position at a high level or in the NFL. So I do my job. That’s not a knock on the people that vote, but the rankings don’t mean anything if you don’t win games.”

Well, it was a banner offseason for Mayfield’s stock in NFL circles. And since it seems Mayfield to slightly respect rankings by former or current NFL quarterbacks, Joe will remind fans that ex-Bucs QB Chris Simms, the NBC analyst, placed Mayfield at No. 9 in his annual quarterback rankings.

So the Bucs have a stud quarterback, standout depth, a weak division and gobs of postseason experience. It’s time for a great season.

Good for Baker keeping the noise out. He can keep playing with a chip on his shoulder and win games. Go Bucs!

Persistence pays off. “The rankings don’t mean anything if you don’t win games”. Baker has always been about one thing. Winning football games. I don’t know how come Cleveland and Carolina didn’t see that right off the bat. The Rams knew it but they had a QB. Elite “persistence” is what Mayfield has. And he’s on a winning football team right now. He knows better than anybody that the “grind” starts now. Training camp. There’s gonna be challenges galore- injuries, heartbreaking losses, and plain old life. But I’ll guarantee he’ll be persistent and keep putting one foot in front of the other. Just like our GM and Head coach and David and Wirfs and Winfield and Evans. And 49 other guys. And 50 years of special players and seasons. And that GM and head coach and QB and those 4 great players I named and 50 years of players and teams are all wound into this team. This season won’t resemble easy, nothing worthwhile easy, and it’s going to be a grind. Talk about Baker plays with a chip on his shoulder? Looks to me like this football team, all 50 years of this team, especially Bowles and Licht, and our player captains, play with a chip on their shoulders. We’re likely to win the Super Bowl this year.

Baker has shown his worth as a top 10 qb imo. Yes he has some stellar targets and a pretty stellar oline but he shows out with what he has, doesn’t make excuses and isn’t afraid to get in the mix grinding out tough yards.

On top of that he is a pretty tough sob. He seems like a team first kinda guy as well.

He has far exceeded any expectations I had for sure. I thought he would be serviceable top 20ish kinda guy before he came in. Hoped the best and liked his character and wanted him to get the chance but wasn’t sure he would ball out like we hoped.

Now we gotta keep him healthy and give that clean pocket especially those first 3 to 4 games from the blindside.

  4. Truth be Told Says:

So yes, we now have a long term franchise quarterback. Really for the first time in this team’s history. The Bucs lucked out and so did Baker. Match made in heaven. Go Bucs!!!

    I love this response.

Is anyone following the Cam Newton criticism of Jalen Hurts? (Cam is 100% correct, IMO.) But he’s basically saying the same thing to the other media personalities that are calling him out. I played, you didn’t, know your place.

  6. Oneilbuc Says:

Sly. Jalen Hurts is a Superbowl champion regardless how you feel. Brady played with top 5 defenses every year with the Patriots. Every Superbowl winning quarterback has a good team including Cam Newton. The problem is the meadi has brain washed y’all to believe which quarterback gets all the credit and some don’t get any credit. So please Baker Mayfield still haven’t played in a conference championship even when the defense put the team in position to win . Because they kept the game close enough for Baker Mayfield to close it out or win it 2 years in a row. At some point Baker Mayfield is going to have to lead this team to a conference championship when the games are in his hands. That’s all what we be saying no one thinks Baker Mayfield is a trash quarterback . But he haven’t been cluch in playoff games.

“rankings don’t mean anything if you don’t win games.”

    Perfect answer Baker….

  9. BillMFl Says:

Love the way Baker plays the game! Fearless and all out effort. Win or lose he fights to the end. Can’t ask for more than that.

  10. John Ocala Says:

I’m buying what you’re saying Joe. Should be a special year followed by a solid respectable organization for the near future. They have built a hellofa squad. Avoid the injury bug and show out! Go Buc’s

  11. Marky mark Says:

OnuIelbuc come clean on your true agenda.

  12. DBS Says:

Onielbuc only appears on Baker threads. Hurts doesn’t need you to be his saviour either. Everyone knows your reason for trying to save Jameis, Jackson and now Hurts. Oh and Daniels be a better QB. Anything trend obvious here?

anyone who claims last year we had a defense that put us in a good place to win playoff games loses all credibility. Just because a bad defense makes one stop after being awful and the offense then does not score doesn’t over ride the poor defense before that. Thats not how football works

  14. Oneilbuc Says:

Mike bucs. The defense can improve I’ve said that repeatedly on here. But the playoff game against Washington last year Baker could have closed that game out but he fumble the ball. Against the lions he threw a pick that coast is the game. Baker Mayfield is 1-7 in prime time games you can’t ignore the fact that sometimes he’s the problem when games are in his hands. Now this year I’m rooting for Baker just like the past 2 years but when he turns over the ball late in big games that’s a problem. Baker Mayfield has not been cluch and I know we are in a trash division so it ain’t that big of a deal winning it. The real season starts in the playoffs. The only thing I want from the bucs is to dominate this trash division. At least win 11or 12 games.

  15. Oneilbuc Says:

DBS. Hurts is a Superbowl winning quarterback and Baker Mayfield haven’t played in a conference championship game yet and I’m hoping this year will be the his first time. And yes all of those quarterbacks are better than Baker Mayfield and would win a Superbowl with our team or at least get to a conference championship game. You ask any of those fans or GM’s would tell you the same thing.

  16. Aqualung Says:

Defensive Coordinator rankings and Todd Bolwes.
