Calijah Kancey: Coach Cliché Fits Todd Bowles

June 14th, 2025

So what do Bucs players think of Todd Bowles?

One weighed in on that this week during The Sports Web with Peter Blake.

Calijah Kancey talked about learning a ton of football from Bowles and having the ultimate respect for him.

“He’s a great coach, a great father figure as well,” Kancey said. “He’s a guy you want to run through a wall for. And I know a lot of people say that, but I really mean it. He’s a players’ coach. If you have something to say, or you see something on the field, he will hear you out. He’s creative when it comes to these blitzes and these stunts, and it’s fun. It’s fun to have him as a coach and go out there and execute those plays for him.”

Joe loved hearing the passion in Kancey’s voice. And Joe will add that Bowles doesn’t get enough credit for developing young players.

As for the Bowles behind the scenes, Kancey said the head coach is “full of sarcasm” and it’s something to stay aware of.

Keep building a winning team and Todd Bowles will be the Head coach for the foreseeable future. Bring home another Super Bowl and he will have his name enshrined over Raymond James Stadium.

  2. View from 132 Says:

That’s interesting. You don’t hear the word FUN enough anymore in sports. That’s good to hear.

  3. TBBucFan Says:

There’s nothing I want more for the Bucs than to be able to look back five years from now and be thankful for all Bowles’ successes. Here’s hoping I’m right.

  4. Kenton Smith Says:

Bowles is the one in line for a raise first. Extend his contract!

  5. Defense Rules Says:

BINGO! Kancey nailed what I think will go down as probably Todd’s greatest attribute as a coach. Just look at the young players we’ve added since he took over as HC in 2022 … and how well the team has done since then.

  6. Saskbucs Says:

We all expect an 11+ win season and a playoff win or 2, or at least we should expect that.

Let’s see if they reach those goals this season before we start handing out raises and extensions to our HC.

  7. SlyPirate Says:

Bowles does a great job developing DBs and ILB but horrible at OLB.

  8. ballwasher61 Says:

His staff gets the job done too, maybe more. Foote back at olbc and Strong on the D-line will pay out.

  9. Buc1987 Says:

Another one and done in the playoffs and Bowles should be done!

  10. lambchop Says:

Development doesn’t matter if it doesn’t translate to wins in the playoffs – Signed Dungy, Gruden

This team is better than 1-and-done. Ultimately the Buc stops at the HC.

  11. GoneGator Says:

As far as I can tell the owners, JL, asst coaches, veteran players, rookies, coaches from other teams, and even many of the national talking heads all have great respect for Todd.

I ONLY see real disrespect from commenters here. C’est la vie.

    Todd is the man!

  12. BucBostic Says:

I think Todd will get use a Super Bowl this year then that’ll stop all the negativity some fans have for him and will most definitely shut up the Haters…….LEGO BUCS

  13. JD Still Says:

It is good the players like him , seems to be nice enough, but the fact remains he is still a sub.500 career win head coach , not many of those make it to the Super Bowl.

  14. 3RB Says:

Hopefully Bowles takes them all the way. We just don’t need anymore at Kansas City on Monday Night situations where you had the defending champs “on the ropes” and he was afraid to go for the two and the win ……..when his defense was already gassed!! Those kind of coaching decisions will get you fired.

  15. SenileSenior Says:

    ‘nuf said! Go Bucs!!

  16. firethecannons Says:

Kancy has always been a borderline great player, hope Todd Bowles can get yet even more creative now that we have a secondary. Kancy so fast in the opposing players grill that he is a major disruptor. We just need our guys to stay healthy on defense. NFL has more and more teams with the tiny mobile fast dynamic quarterback, we need our guys to be fast.

  17. FrontFour Says:

Bowles took over an old roster at the last minute with a QB that tried to bolt for Miami in the off season, then spent the season in the middle of a divorce. And let’s not forget salary cap hell. He’s had to coach up late RD draft picks and UDFA’s that were really practice squad players to start on Sunday’s. Meantime he’s built a great culture and managed to win three division titles. Rough spots? Yup, he’s got ‘em. I’m a defense first guy and last season hurt. But it starts with talent. So we went out and got a bunch of new guys that the hype machine is already touting as huge upgrades. Only time will tell. And last time I looked, Bowles defense took apart Andy Reid and Mahomes in a Super Bowl when he had the talent. Let’s see how this team comes together.
