Will Gholston Describes Baker Mayfield And Tom Brady As “Somewhat In The Same”

February 9th, 2024

So much love for Baker Mayfield flows through the Buccaneers’ locker room.

Mayfield has the buy-in of his teammates, and it’s not just guys he throws the ball to.

Eleven-year Buccaneers defensive lineman Will Gholston has seen plenty in his years through multiple quarterbacks and five head coaches.

Speaking on FOX Sports Radio this week, Gholston was asked what Mayfield is like.

“Amazing, bro,” Gholston quickly replied. “He’s one of the coolest guys I’ve ever met. Real down to earth. Real genuine guy. Super competitive. Like, I’ll walk through a dark alley with that guy.”

And then Gholston was asked why Mayfield is so likeable and a guy who can lead from Day 1 and every day.

“For me, I can say that I like a guy who I know will knuckle up when it’s time to knuckle up and he’s not going to shy away from that. So it’s easy to follow a guy like that,” Gholston replied.

And then came the fun one. Gholston was asked, “What was Tom Brady like?”

This was a relaxed interview. Gholston was in no rush for an answer. He could have said anything, but he compared Brady to Mayfield.

“He was, man, somewhat in the same [as Mayfield], I would say,” Gholston said. “I would knuckle up with Brady, too.”

That speaks to his leadership ability for sure. Let’s hope he produces wins like Tom did for the Bucs. That would be special.

  2. BucsBeBack (Artist formally known as: BringBucsBack) Says:

I’d rather walk through a dark alley with Gholston.

  3. Marky Mark Says:

What a joke. Flacco plays 5 games and melts down like an iceberg in Greenland in the playoffs. Baker startz every game, and destrOys Philly in the playoffs then plays lions close. No credibility. The writers did not want to have to admit how wrong they were about Baker preseason.

  4. Wild Bill Says:

No way.. Brady got rid of the ball as fast as he could. Baker often holds the ball too long and takes too many hard hits. He was beat up and limping by season end. I admire his guts but…..

  5. TDTB Says:

I was and am still of the opinion that the Bucs should have played Trask a meaningful amount because if Baker isn’t resigned they have wasted a year that could have determined what they have in Trask as well as get Trask more seasoning. That said, Baker got completely jobbed last night. He had the better season. He had the better stats. He had the biggest POSITIVE impact on his club when compared to Flacco. That was BS.

I’ll walk through a dark alley with that guy.

And there it is. If any of you want to know why the Bucs are going to sign Baker to a long term deal, this is the reason why. It is so difficult to find players that other teammates would say this about. You can’t measure this with a statistic.

  7. Jack Clark Says:

Gholston said baker and Brady personality were similar, he was not talking about their skill level

Will also said Logan Hall was more athletic than JJ Watt. lol

    Yes, but context matters.
Rather than compare Hall to himself, Gholston said the rookie reminds him of Noah Spence and J.J. Watt.

He also said that same day on Logan Hall:
“I haven’t seen him in pads.”

So, the difference is he had multiple years with Brady and a full year of Mayfield in pads. Gholston did not repeat the claim about Logan Hall after a full year.

robbie. We also know who Trask’s Son and #1 cheerleader for the guy on the Bench is don’t we? Can’t wait to see your next name. Person, country, state, town, city, or animal.

  12. Popcorn Mike Says:

I personally think Mayfield did what we like to say in the US, he grow up. He learned from his mistakes with the other teams and I am thinking he like the atmosphere around the Bucs organization. Hearing a lot of positive stuff about him from the organization, even Bowles. Pretty sure he will re-sign. I don’t think he and the Bucs will go overboard on his contract because it has only been 1 year of play in Tampa.

  13. Glass Half Full Guy Says:

We’ve heard the stories of Brady treating everyone in the locker room as equals and being not just a leader but “one of the guys”. Same is being said about Mayfield. In TB12’s 23-year career I’ve never heard a single teammate say a bad thing about him. Hell, he’s good friends with Michael Strahan and many, many other opponents as well.

I’m pretty sure Baker’s time in Cleveland was only marred on a personal level by a selfish diva named OBJ who didn’t think he was thrown to enough and Baker may not have handled it as maturely as he could have.

There’s a definite plus for a QB when his teammates love him, see him battle and want to battle just as hard for him. It’s extra motivation, even with the guys on defense. They see “their guy” struggling or throw a pick and they’ll say “We got your back, bro. We’ll get the ball back for you”.

You see a lot of players say “he’s our leader, etc” but it mostly sounds robotic because it’s “the right thing to say” but when guys talk about Brady or Mayfield (and a few others) you can hear and see the emotion in their voices and on their faces.

This article is about comparing leadership qualities, not skills. Aaron Rodgers and Dan Marino had better “measurable skills” than Brady. I’m not saying they weren’t loved by their teammates or weren’t great leaders, but winning isn’t just about what you can measure at the combine. It’s an emotional game as well.

  14. Bradybucs Says:

The whole super bowl narrative is about Brady vs Mahomes. Now the narrative is Belichick cant win with out Brady also talked about a radio row. Nobody at the super bowl is talking about Brady and his Bucs era. I loved the Bucs era but dont you think it says something any time a Bucs player is interviewed Brady’s name comes up. BUCS live in Brady’s shadow look at JOE constantly writing about Brady. THE PATRIOTS live in Brady’s shadow look Brady actually is NICE about the BUCS. BRADY took pay cuts sold out the Bucs stadium they added seats because of him. Brady had the number 1 selling jersey all 3 years with the Bucs. In 2022 players vote on NFL Network the top 100 the players picked BRADY number 1

    Robbie

“Bakey is as good as Tommy!”

Who whizzed in your Wheaties? Are you a Trasker or just a hater? I get the former even though I do not agree with them I understand them. But the rest seem to be trashing Baker just for the sake of trashing him.

How about a balanced rational view. Some FACTS first then MO.

First Brady is the GOAT. He was not the same player even in the SB year at age 43!!! The following year at 44 his skills were clearly eroding as well as having his gonads shrink! Fall down at the mere threat of a sack or throw it away to protect himself.

His final year mix in the stupidity with waiting till the preseason to “fix” his marriage along with the offseason of speculation that he wanted to be released from his contractual obligation so he could play for Miami? Vegas? He was an old man with tons of distraction and his final year the ENTIRE team seemed to pick up and share that lack of focus.

NOW opinion. Baker has never, and will never be the same as Brady!!! However Brady’s final two years here were not representative of his total body of work.

And yes I’ll say it…Baker has far more cojones that Brady ever had. Last year Baker was a better leader than Brady was the year before. And scoreboard…Brady threw an int into the endzone to start the momentum for the Cowboys rout of the Bucs in the 1st round. Baker made it to the second round.

I’m the old freaking dude here at 76. I don’t enjoy “ageism”. But I’m real. Father Time has a way of catching up with everybody even Tommy Boy!

Jack Clark Says: “Gholston said baker and Brady personality were similar, he was not talking about their skill level.”

Of course. But that doesn’t stop Joe from spinning the headline to read as if Gholston equated their skill levels. Remember, everything here at JoeBakerFan is about advancing the narrative.

  18. BakerBucs Says:

How the hell does Joe flacco get come back player of year when he only played in 5 games & the playoff game was a disaster WTF r u kidding me !

  19. BakerBucs Says:

Question is Robbie really David says?

  20. Mark Says:

Bakes gas a way bigger arm. “You know who has a sneaky big arm? It’s Bake. Baker Mayfield’s got a cannon and I don’t think he gets enough credit for it.” -Josh Allen on which #NFL    has a big arm

  21. mark2001 Says:

Sure they both do. They both have an overwhelming desire to win and are willing to pay the price to do so.

  22. de bucs fan Says:

Anytime a leader shows the willingness and (even better) ability to get dirty and do the grimey hard work (QB a de facto leader) it helps focus everyone. Especially a QB. It’s a unique position and not every QB will run thru a wall for the first. TB12 and Baker do it repeatedly and seem like hella cool dudes. Helps breakdown that barrier between a QB and everyone else.

The roster as is seems to be having a blast. Compare that vs the lost decade where players were damn near moping around watching the clock to countdown.

    Fun times if nothing else.

  23. Let em Bake Says:

The nfl should require players play at least 80 percent of season to qualify for post season awards, ( like nba). It hurt to tear my Baker CPOY ticket today…

  24. FrontFour Says:

Gholston is such a great teammate, unsung, but solid. Can see him back in a rotational role again.

  25. Twan Says:

While some of you Bucs fans are talking negative n hating on a QB who took you 2 the playoffs n almost went to the NFC championship game I PROMISE IF BAKER DOSEN’T RETURN OUR BUCS TEAM WILL BE SETBACK BY 3 TO 4 YEARS N WE WILL BECOME A REBUILD TEAM…. BAKER CARRIED this team with NO running game n with a 1st year OC playcaller who looked lost at the 1st half of majority of the games… Baker had so many ELITE DIME THROWS all year n made a big play with his legs when the play was almost broke up n didnt work…… Better enjoy n get Behind Baker this Team love him 4 a reason n thats hard 2 do coming in behind Brady bcuz Trask would’ve turned this team into a Dumpster Fire especially during that 5 game losing streak it take a Experienced Good Starting QB to turn around a losing streak in the Nfl n then catch fire again n get his team to the playoffs…. JUST BE CAREFULL SAYING THEY CAN LET BAKER WALK BCUZ HE IS STILL YOUNG N WILL ONLY KEEP GETTING BETTER N IF HE LEAVES OUR TEAM WOULD TURN INTO A LOSING REBUILDING TEAM BCUZ IF BAKER LEAVE THEN I KNOW 4SURE MIKE WILL LEAVE BCUZ HE WANTS TO WIN THIS POINT IN HIS CAREER N WE WILL NOT FIND A COLLEGE QB OR FREE AGENT QB WHO WOULD COME IN AND TAKE THIS TEAM FAR LIKE BAKER DID THATS FACTS… BAKER IS 2-2 N THE PLAYOFFS N LAMAR IS 1-5 N ALLEN IS 3-4 SO BAKER IS 100% A FRANCHISE QB.. LOOK at Herbert hasnt turned the Chargers around yet, Daniel Jones got psid n hasn’t did nothing for the Giants No meaningful playoff wins, n look at Tua hasn’t took the Dolphins to the playoffs consistently….. Baker turned the WORST FRANCHISE in the league around n gave them their 1st playoff win in 20 years n made Cleveland Relevant again but got hurt stayed loyal n played through injury….. SO LET ME KNOW WHO THE BUCS CAN GET WHO WILL COME IN N BE A GOOD WINNING QB 4 YEARS 2 COME BESIDES BAKER IF HE LEAVES…… UNLESS we want 3 to 4 years of Losing we Need 2 bring Baker 100%
