“If You Keep Saying That Scotty Miller Is Good, Unfortunately, You Don’t Have A Good Eye For Football, OK?”

October 1st, 2022

Fed up with Bucs receiver.

The Bucs defense makes a former offensive lineman smile. When it comes to the offense, it makes the same man do something else frowned upon in polite company.

Former Bucs guard (1990-1996) and current popular sports radio personality Ian Beckles took to his podcast “In the Trenches” to break down the state of the Bucs after a 14-12 loss to the Packers.

And the state of the offense, Beckles said, is sorry. In fact, Beckles wonders if the Bucs offense, even with Tom Brady at quarterback and a great defense, can make a playoff run. And of course, Beckles kvetched about Brady taking a vacation to the Bahamas for 11 days in training camp.

Simply put, Beckles said the offense must improve.

“You can’t think that you can continue to win games putting out what the Buccaneers are now,” Beckles said. “You are just not gonna, OK.

“Defensively, the Buccaneers are a good football team. They are. They still don’t rush the passer well enough for me. If you have to blitz to get a pass rush that’s going to get you in trouble eventually.

“I don’t know who are pass rushers are. Our pass rushers are Devin White and Shaq Barrett and that’s a blitzing situation and that can get you in trouble.”

Once again, Beckles had choice words for outside linebacker Joe Tyron Shoyinka (Beckles couldn’t pronounce his name and after a couple of attempts, gave up and said, “Whatever his name is.”).

“JTS, listen, I keep on having people tell me how good he is,” Beckles began. “I keep on wanting to see something. What is it? What has he done? What has he done?

“He might make a half-play if he is unblocked. I can make a play if I’m unblocked! Run through somebody! I haven’t seen it to this day. Still!”

Then, Beckles deftly changed gears and tore into backup receiver Scotty Miller. He’s done with him.

“And I’ve got to hear how good Scotty Miller is too,” Beckles hollered. “If you keep saying that Scotty Miller is good, unfortunately, you don’t have a good eye for football, OK? Unfortunately. He’s not good! He’s not a good receiver.

“There is nothing about Scotty Miller that is good other than what he did three years ago in Green Bay. That’s a long time!”

Beckles was outraged that Miller logged 52 snaps on offense against Green Bay and had only a four-yard catch to show for it. Beckles said the backup receivers are going to do the Bucs in if the starters cannot get on the field soon.

“There were some crucial times in the game where I looked up and I saw Scotty Miller out there and I saw Cameron Brate out there. I saw [Breshad] Perriman. I saw Cole Beasley,” Beckles said. “Is that scary to you? You know what scares me? Mike Evans. Julio Jones. Antonio Brown. Chris Godwin.”

Beckles is sick to his stomach that the Bucs, he believes, have no tight end.

“We might as well eliminate the tight end position from our team,” Beckles said. “We are not a physical football team. You cannot be a physical football team without a tight end. You can’t do it.

“Defensively we are fine. Offensively we are not. … If you have played three games and you haven’t scored a touchdown in the first half, I would start to worry about that.”

Beckles was impressed with the inside play of rookie defensive lineman Logan Hall but Beckles was not impressed with Vita Vea.

“I need Vita Vea to wake up. I need JTS to wake up. We need a lot of people to wake up.”

  1. Scurvy Dogs Says:

Hard to disagree with anything he said.

  2. Bucs Win Says:

I know all the sensitive Bucc fans will be butt hurt over Beckles’s criticism of the team but zero lies were spoken. JTS is Gaines Adam part duex and Scotty Miller couldn’t catch covid at a Trump rally.

  3. FrontFour Says:

Pretty much agree on JTS. More and more reminding me of OJ Howard. Alway about potential. VV. Has to show up more as well. More impressed with Hall at this point and with Hicks sidelined will be interested in how much he improves.

  4. Tackleblockwin Says:

It’s hard for me to judge what has been a depleted offense. Brady doesn’t fully trust the banged up oline. We have injuries at WR. And at RB we are a one trick pony. On top of that we are not getting enough out of our TEs and Brady has missed some opportunities. In other words, I’m not worried. It’s a long season and our division is weak, thankfully. Hang in their Bucs fans the tide is going to turn sooner than later. Brady + Byron + BA will figure it out, and hopefully we get a little healthier.

  5. Wayne Perez Says:

    Cut him now

  6. Jeff Says:

He’s terrible by NFL standards. Should have never made the team.

  7. Defense Rules Says:

Interesting analysis by Beckles, and he’s spot on, even in his analysis of the defense. I especially liked his conclusion when he wrote … “They still don’t rush the passer well enough for me. If you have to blitz to get a pass rush that’s going to get you in trouble eventually.” I still wish we had Suh in there to complement Vea because I’m not at all confident how many games/snaps Hicks is gonna give us this year. And if Vea goes down we’re toast.

The WR & TE situation is a whole other issue. Godwin & Fournette went down in the 2nd Saints game last season, yet we survived by plugging in backups (won the last 3 regular season games). Vaughn, RoJo, Grayson, Johnson & even Perriman all stepped up; Miller & Darden contributed very little. Thankfully we still had ME13 & Gronk available during those games too.

  8. SteveK Says:

That photo has a very “Seinfeld” portrait feeling it. Fantastic find, Joe, please ALWAYS use this photo for Mr. Beckles’ articles.

  9. Bucschamp Says:

    Call gronk. He’s scary too

  10. DoooshLaRue Says:

    ________

It was 1 year 8 months and 7 days ago Ian.

    Exaggerate much?

  11. John Sinclear Says:

If the back-ups can’t play, get new back-ups. This an injury prone game.

  12. Thadeus Says:

Been saying trade Scotty and Godwin for some O-line help. If you can’t keep Tom off of his back, it doesn’t matter who’s at WR.

  13. Kentucky Buc Says:

I believe trying to turn Scotty into something he’s not has messed him up. He can take the top off or at least he could. Trying to turn him into an Edleman type appears to be a mistake. That short area quickness is a natural thing that few receivers have. Fast and quick are two different things. Edleman wasn’t really that fast but he had elite short area quickness. He attacked defenders and separated in a blink.

  14. Lt. Dan Says:

Cade Otton fittna splode! You heard it here first!

  15. ModHairKen Says:

    Journeyman, intoxicated horse abuser.

It’s 3 games in with significant injuries and three playoff caliber teams. Give this crap a rest.

But he is right about Miller. That dude has disappeared.

  16. BigMacAttack Says:

I agree with Ian Beckles too. Miller is weak, runs bad routes and forgot how to catch. JTS looks light and timid, but fast. He isn’t there yet. Brate dropped a pass he should have caught in the red zone. Defense averaging 10 pts per game allowed is all your can ask for. Leftwich needs to wake up. Perriman is playing well but that fumble was inexcusable and could have made the difference in the game. That was at home where they should be their best. I don’t care how many points we score as long as it’s 1 more than our opponent. Step it up!

  17. adam from ny Says:

he’s nailed it on jts…he runs thru no one…

you basically just see jts’ arms and legs flying around mostly, as he gets pushed out of plays, or overrunning plays…

at least sit him down and make him watch endless hours of jpp’s film – and copy some of that or something

  18. Bucamania Says:

Can’t disagree. Scotty doesn’t belong. JTS and VV need to step it up.

  19. 1sparkybuc Says:

Thompkins can catch anything thrown in his zip code. Why haven’t we seen him on the field? Surely he is better than Miller.

  20. EEK Says:

Lenny is scary in the flat too

I imagine work is being done and FA’s at WR are getting regular try outs still

  21. ClwJB Says:

Scotty has gone backwards, can’t stay on his feet out of breaks and doesn’t react to the ball very well

  22. ClwJB Says:

Scotty has gone backwards, can’t stay on his feet out of breaks and doesn’t react to the ball very well but we did t ask him to do anything but run go routes and bubble screens really

I thought the Tyler Johnson over Scotty move was not good but maybe no one would even give a 7 for him…

  23. Cchead Says:

JTS is a bust until he isn’t. Dude needs to put on some weight and get stronger. The d looks better when he’s in the sidelines.

  24. BucsFanSince76 Says:

Add Suh and you will get pressure with four down linemen. Do your job Jason Licht and correct your horriblly bad judgment that Hicks could replace SUH.

  25. David Says:

It’s not wrong. I’ve been saying it since last year. Scotty Miller had a handful of catches running go routes. He can’t do anything else. I like him, I wish he was able to step up these first few games but he hasn’t.
My guess is he will be inactive or gone within 4 weeks if he does not step it up a lot. Same with Darden. Getting rid of Tyler Johnson was a dumb move.

As for JTS- Beckles is completely wrong. Against Dallas and Green Bay there were times, at least a whole half , where he was in the backfield wreaking havoc, getting quarterback pressures etc. He looks greatly improved from last year.

  26. Ultra ClodHopper Says:

Billy Beane: ”If he’s such a good hitter, why doesn’t he hit good?

  27. David Says:

    Bucsfan….

There were two games last year were SUH had a pass rush. The other 15 games… He was worthless. He can’t go side to side anymore, he was getting progressively worse against the run. At this point every player they have rotating in at DT is better than SUH.
The rookie Hall looks way better than SUH did last year with a pass rush.
SENAT, fourth string, looks better against the run that SUH did last year.

You people are living 3 years ago when it comes to SUH.
    Get over it. He’s done

  28. BucsFanSince76 Says:

David you are so wrong on so many levels. Suh had 6 sacks last year which was 12th in the NFL. Suh had seven TFL(Tackle for Loss) which was 15th in the NFL and you do not get TFL’s if you have no lateral movement. In his 2 playoff games Suh had 2 sacks and a forced fumble that absolutely kept Bucs in the Rams game. PFF had him ranked 18th out of all interior lineman in the entire league. Not to mention Suh has NEVER missed a game in his entire career due to injury. David you are either a Suh hater or you just don’t know squat about football.

  29. Winny Testaverde Says:

Hurricane Heckles taking Scotty Miller and his fans to task. I see Scotty’s impact as follows:

If I’m not mistaken…he was drafted in the 6th…the pick from the Eagles in exchange for the ultimate team player DeSean Jackson. Addition by subtraction

The 2020 Super Bowl season…Scotty made multiple game changing catches…vs The Raiders before half…a key score vs The Vikes…a clutch grab vs The Taints in the playoffs and of course the NFC Championship game altering snag before halftime. He was clutch that year.

He’s totally outkicked his career coverage. He’s not built to be a # 1, 2 or even 3 option. Thankful for his contributions ( key fumble recovery vs Eagles in the playoffs as well now that I think of it )…if he’s done…so be it. We should salute him.

  30. lambchop Says:

JTS is a sprinter playing football. That’s it. Good OTs will just carry his body away from the pocket using his own speed.

He over-paid for the pass rush academy.

  31. lambchop Says:

JPP was fast, but he always kept the target on the QB, the guy in front was just an obstacle. JTS’s target is the RT. His mind frame looks like, “I gotta beat the RT to the spot.” Instead, he should be thinking of getting to the QB by any means possible. And most of the time that means slowing down, muscling up and grinding.

  32. BucsFanSince76 Says:

JTS needs 20 lbs. of muscle added and watch hours of Julius Peppers tape.

  33. Itzok Says:

I agree. Sick of hearing Scott is the fastest player on the team. I’ve never seen him run by anyone. He drops everything thrown his way. He should get 8 snaps a game and a 6th wide out on a team not the number two option.

  34. Buczilla Says:

Licht’s record at drafting outside pass rushers isn’t good, but JTS was the last pick in the first round, so I’m not jumping on the bust bandwagon yet. Vita looks off and I think that he misses Suh. Scotty sucks. I had high hopes for him after 2020, but he’s been figured out and seems incapable of adjusting. We desperately need some healthy weapons for Brady. Weapons for Brady!

  35. Show Me the TDs Says:

Yeah, Scott sucks. Other than that Beckles is a blow-hard. Everything else that he regurgitated is obvious. Is he looking for SAS $?

  36. BuxfaninTX Says:

Scotty Miller Lite cannot get separation nor can he catch with his hands over his shoulders….should have kept Tyler Johnson in that case

  37. BucfaninMi Says:

Scotty should be a special teams guy. KR/ PR and gunner.

  38. David Says:

Bucsfan… I am not a SUH hater, he has been fantastic since he’s been here. Great leader. But I do not care what stats you show, I watched every game. More than once.
SUH got worse and worse and worse against the run and his pass rush was irrelevant except 2 games where he totaled 4 sacks.

SENAT is better against the run. The rookie Logan Hall shows way more promise as a pass rusher, I mean it’s not even close.

There’s a reason he still does not have a team, scouts saw that he was falling off big time and he still wants 7 to 10 mill a season.
    No thanks.

  39. Mike Ralstott Says:

@Bucs Win congratulations on the dumbass comment of the day. Are you one of those guys that can’t talk about anything without bringing your Trump derangement into it?
