Gerald McCoy Selects NFC Team To Make Super Bowl: “I Have To Be Honest”

June 14th, 2022

Picks NFC favorite.

Former Bucs stud defensive tackle Gerald McCoy was torn and it pained him.

GMC has been to more Pro Bowls as a Bucs player (six) than John Lynch or Rondé Barber. He’s also been to more Pro Bowls than Ring of Honor members Jimmie Giles (four), Paul Gruber (none) and Doug Williams (none). So while appearing as a guest co-host of “Total Access” last night, seen on NFL Network, GMC confessed he has skin in the game in choosing a favorite to win the NFC this fall.

He was part of a panel asked to pick their favorite team to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl. GMC grimaced and prefaced his answer, saying it is not the team he wants in the Super Bowl.

“Now let me preface this by saying, I love the Bucs. Anyone who knows me knows I am a Buc for life. I grew up a Bucs fan,” GMC said. “BUT, I have to be honest on this. I think the favorite on this is the Rams.”

GMC said the Rams have too much firepower when you look at who they were able to keep and who they were able to sign.

“I don’t know how they did it,” GMC said.

Why not the Packers or the Bucs? Simple, GMC said. Too many unanswered questions.

“There is a lot of question marks with Todd Bowles being a new head coach in Tampa,” GMC said. “It’s different being a coordinator than being a head coach!”

Well, GMC is right about that, but hold up. Todd Bowles was a head coach in the NFL, four seasons with the Jets.. It’s not like this is something brand new to him.

GMC also believes the Bucs’ secondary may be the team’s downfall. “The backend in Tampa, kinda questionable, I don’t know,” GMC said.

Joe understands why some are not sold on the Bucs secondary but as Joe pointed out yesterday, the amount of times teams threw on the Bucs because they didn’t dare run on them sort of throws the numbers sideways. Besides, it’s not like the Bucs didn’t beef up the secondary this spring.

Outside of GMC’s point about Bowles, Joe doesn’t think GMC was out of line. The Rams, until someone can dethrone them, are the current kings of the NFC mountain. That doesn’t mean the Bucs cannot beat them.

You can see GMC discuss the NFC race in the NFL Network video below.

geraldini as a rotational player at veteran league minimum if we don’t sign suh ???

lousy thought, but just a thought

  2. westernbuc Says:

He was openly clamoring for a TV gig when he signed with the cowboys. I see he’s back at it again. Fortunately for him, NFL network doesn’t test like the NFL does

  3. CleanHouse Says:

I’m sure, now that Joe has flashed the Bat Signal, all of the hate will soon start rolling in.

  4. Bruce Blahak Says:

    Fn clowns!!

  5. Defense Rules Says:

GMC … ‘Anyone who knows me knows I am a Buc for life.’

Not to those of us who well remember GMC signing with the Stinkin Panthers after his 9-year stint with the Bucs was up.

  6. Hail2dabucs Says:

GMC GTFOH ! The face of the lost decade talking bout superbowls ? Shut up and eat your ice cream ! bum !

  7. Robert Says:

    Whoopi?

  8. Kevin Says:

Gmc has to be the biggest fool who was ever a buccaneer. even more than Antonio brown who at least had talent.

  9. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I have nothing against GMC but who cares who he thinks will got to the SB from the NFC?

  10. ModHairKen Says:

The Pro Bowl selection is a joke. If guys refuse to accept it, they just keep going down the row until the next guy accepts.

To compare McCoy’s Pro Bowls to Jimmie Giles and Doug Williams is insulting. What those two men did for this franchise is incomparable. And the Pro Bowl rules for making the team did not include Fan Boy votes. Joe, stop using MSNBC journalism.

  11. Your Mom Says:

One good play call and the Bucs would have repeated and then the Rams would be a sad example of how leveraging to win now can backfire.

Keeping last year’s team together doesn’t make them better than the Bucs, even last year and especially this year.

  12. BUC CHEEKS Says:

Always wanted Suh, I’m sure the front office did too! We got the leftovers w this guy. Sawwwwft so soft

  13. Cobraboy Says:

I wish this guy would just go away.

  14. VabucSINCE’97 Says:

GMC saddest buc ever hated we drafted him

  15. Eckwood Says:

    Diva !!

Let’s see who were out vs the rams

    Tristan Wirfs

    And those who played injured

    Ryan Jensen
    JPP
    Lavonte David

    We are gonna be fine.

In other news , Wimpy will gladly pay you for a hamburger on Tuesday.

  18. DoooshLaRue Says:

Boy, I only hope that his fake ass hair is as soft as he is.

    Whoopi indeed.

  19. UKBuccaneer Says:

The hate McCoy gets from bucs fans is unreal. The guy was a standout during a lost decade, who could have gone elsewhere at any point.

  20. Hodad Says:

Not only does he sound like a clown, he dresses, and looks like one too.

  21. Cobraboy Says:

@UK: he was the best player on a really bad team. That’s it. And that is not saying much.

But he was soft, never took a game over, or showed real leadership skills.

If you could buy McCoy for what he was worth, and sell him for what he thought he was worth, you’d be a millionaire+.

His comic-book superhero fetish made me cringe with embarrassment, and I doubt I’m alone in that.

To this day he’s peeved he’s not loved or respected by the Buc base.

  22. Cobraboy Says:

BTW: IMO, the Pro Bowl is meaningless in real terms.

The fact Paul Gruber never made one tells you everything one needs to know.

To insinuate McCoy is somehow superior to Barber or Lynch is an insult to those two GREAT players.

  23. DoooshLaRue Says:

His comic-book superhero fetish made me cringe with embarrassment, and I doubt I’m alone in that.
    _____________

Most of us yes, but Whoopi93’s biggest supporter, Munch, “swells” with pride for all things soft.

    Comic books
    Kimonos
And now, high quality weaves. We can only hope the hair was sustainably sourced.

    Ah shucks……. my bad Ben.

    GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!

  24. Alanbucsfan Says:

Bucschamp- you left Bowles off your list

  25. DBS Says:

Don’t make excuses. Look who was out when we beat KC for the Super Bowl Bucschamp.

  26. Craig Says:

The Rams went all in for last year. They traded their draft picks and back loaded contracts that they can’t live up to in the coming season.

They will probably not make a deep run into the playoffs this, if they get there at all, the NFC West is the 900 pound bear in the room.

Bucs have an easier path to making the Packers choke.

  27. Greg Says:

The thing that pissed McCoy more than anything was the fact that Suh showed up and showed him up in every way possible. If Suh had not been here we may not have made it to the super bowl. The man was a beast in the playoffs.

  28. Bojim Says:

Always liked Gerald. Can’t blame the bad years on him alone.

  29. Anonymous Says:

Rams had injury luck last year, they’re a very top top heavy team. Something tells me they won’t have the same luck this year avoiding injuries not when they’re defending champs and everyone is gunning for them.

  30. RustyRhinos Says:

Yeah “A Buc Fan for life” except when he “finally feels at home and in a better organization” after his Carolina contract signing. Couldn’t and wouldn’t play in a 3/4 Defense, SHUrly hated to see his 93 go out and actually make game changing plays all over the field, and watch 93 help mold a defensive attitude.
Looks like McCoy has found Cam’s barber to his liking. It looks, yeah it Looks.

    Go!! Bucs!! ROH FOR WILDER!!

  31. Bush's Coke Spoon Says:

OMG this dude only spent one season with Cam, and now he looks like his soul mate.

  32. David Says:

It’s a good take. He’s not wrong about any of it. The Rams are defending and have a very good team. The Bucs need to knock them off

  33. Steven007 Says:

Cobra said it so I didn’t have to. But I’ll echo it. The contrast between McCoy’s pro bowls and grubers lack thereof is evidence of its insignificance. Gruber was by any definition a better player at his position than McCoy was. And I’m no McCoy hater. He was a decent player just not elite. If he wasn’t picked in the top three he would never have gotten nearly the accolades he did. It would have been a nice story if he were a third round pick. And yes, the superhero stuff was definitely cringy. Come on man…

  34. zzbucs Says:

team vs team with no injuries I pick the Bucs everyday…..
If the Bucs can keeo healthy we are going to be serious contenders…

I think the Bucs and the Bills are the two best teams…….

I didnt like what Mc Coy said about Coach Bowles, not to many have concerns, maybe just he……

  35. David Says:

Why so many haters on this guy, I’ll never understand. For years he was the one good player they had. And then there are idiots here complaining because he signed with the Panthers. Get a grip. He’s not a fan sitting at home with a bag of chips and a beer investing his whole life in a team. He was an actual player in a business who had to do what he had to do. Fans are way more invested than players and most of you just don’t seem to understand that

  36. Iron-Wombat Says:

dudes a fraud, he’s always been a fraud.

  37. David Says:

    AFC
The Bills and Denver are looking scary.
I think the Bengals fall back a little, usually happens when you peek a little early. Kansas City… Don’t think they’re the same. Ravens I have no idea what to make of them. Raiders are good.
    NFC
The Cowboys will be good. Packers will be good. Saints are good but QB. Philly, I’m not sold on Hurts. SF don’t see them going as far this year
AZ I’m not sold on Murray.
Comes down to Bucs and Rams.

  38. Bush's Coke Spoon Says:

“Swing your partner, ’round and ’round!”

  39. Bush's Coke Spoon Says:

    Robert Says:
    “Whoopi?”
    .
    .

I almost actually fell out of my chair. Holy spit. LOLZ

  40. Oneilbuc Says:

We need to face the facts we haven’t beaten the saints or the Rams. And yall can keep saying quarterback all you want but the saints have beaten us 7 out of the 8 times we played them . The Rams beat us 3 times in a row with Brady as the quarterback. The last time we beat the Rams Jamies was our quarterback. And the Rams just played in a superbowl the year before. But yall keep saying this is a superbowl roster just because of one guy lol 😆 😂. As of right now this is not a superbowl roster.

  41. gotbbucs Says:

Remember that signature game that McCoy had against……..? Well, he had that one signature play against…….?

If nothing else, he was nice enough to say sorry to a QB mid hit. That sure was a signature moment.
He was great at telling us every offseason that “next year” would be there year.

  42. Buc1987 Says:

    Who is Gerald McCoy?

  43. UKBuccaneer Says:

I read somewhere that Gerald’s 4th qtr sack rate was comparable
To some guy called Sapp. That can’t be right though, because G never showed up when it mattered…

  44. KYBUCFAN Says:

The hate for this man sickens me… Smh!!!

  45. zzbucs Says:

    @Oneilbuc…

With all due respect I diasgree with you, this is a superbowl roster even without Gronk….yet

  46. PassingThru Says:

That shouldn’t be a controversial opinion. Remember the uproar before last season, whenever someone stated that the reigning champion Bucs weren’t the favorite to repeat?

  47. Mike Johnson Says:

Not sayin I agree with GMC. But the Rams are the current champs. Which means, everybody else is underneath them until they are Defeated. The Rams will be there again this year. Until we can defeat them, they are the No 1 team. Like it or not, thats a Fact..for now.

  48. Adrnagy Says:

Everytime Joe drops a GMC or Jamies article it blows up

  49. Kevin Says:

The only thing Gerald Mccoy was great at was Fallin down and getting hurt all time buc leader of injury list.

  50. SlyPirate Says:

I’M A BUC FOR LIFE TOO

The Rams are the NFC favorite. Good take, GMC.

  51. Tbbucs3 Says:

I’ve seen the idea of signing Gerald McCoy as a depth player on multiple Bucs site now….

I’m sure Jason Licht has no interest in bringing back a completely washed Gerald McCoy who was the face of the Bucs losing culture for damn near a decade.

While we’re at it, how about we lure Josh McCown out of retirement to compete with Gabbert for a backup role?

  52. Duane Says:

Its just a take. I hope teams sleep on the defense all season long. Coach Bowles knows his side of the ball has room for massive improvement, and I feel as if we are going to see that. The identity last year was to keep it close and let the GOAT do his thing. Hoping for easier wins this year. Run the football, control the clock, reduce the amount of snaps your defensive unity has to play, and profit.

  53. Eddie Marz Says:

He’s right The Rams are the team to beat. So let’s kick their butts! GOBUCS!

  54. GOB Says:

The Rams should be the favorites. But for some crazy stupid fumbles by the Rams, the playoff game wouldn’t have been close. The bucs were beat up, so let’s look at the regular season matchup. Stafford completed 71% and 4 TDs. Brady was even better, with 74% completion and 431 yards, with a full his full compliment of recievers. I think AB missed that game. The bucs still lost by 10. The Rams got better, and in my view the bucs a little worse.

It reminds me of the early to mid 90s cowboys 49ers. Despite having a tremendous team, SF couldn’t beat the cowboys. That is until 1994 with a loaded roster. I don’t think Tampa did enough to close the gap. They must change the gameplan and hope the Rams get banged up. Unless the bucs shorten the game, and stop blitzing Stafford, I don’t see much changing this year.

  55. Bucsfan81 Says:

Gerald Mccoy who spent more time helping other players off the dirt than helping his own teammates win games. Yea don’t think anyone here really misses as soft as ice cream GMC.

  56. Oneilbuc Says:

ZZbuc. The defensive line is what I don’t like about the team. I hope we can a superbowl this year but without a good defense I don’t believe we can win a superbowl. I hope we do !!

  57. KoryC idahome bucc fan Says:

We all wanted Suh in that draft that is not a lie. Geraldini is the perfect nickname he disappeared in every big moment. The Bucs have a Super Bowl ring with the name Suh, not McCoy. Suh ring of honor for that alone NOT McCoy. Dude needs to learn some bicep curls instead of tearing them. And btw Suh never gets hurt that we know of and attacks not hugs. Sorry rant over let’s not talk anymore about a washout

  58. Vance Says:

    Ahhhhhh.
WTF is on yo Head bruh!?

  59. adam from ny Says:

picking up “small ben” on monday night football vs the steelers and apologizing to him is all i remember now……

oh yeah, and when mcdonald freight trained cucamonga conte out of the league

  60. Lokog Says:

Na gerald was never a buc and never will be a buc i thought he was home in carolina

  61. Goatfarmer Says:

Six pro bowls for him, what a sham. Players voted him there to fake the Bucs into keeping him. Most overrated player in the NFL during the teens.

  62. MadMax Says:

So whoopi gained some weight and grew some eyebrows and a beard….alrighty then

  63. Anonymous Says:

Like somebody else mentioned, if GMC wasn’t a #3 draft pick he’d be lucky if he got to one Pro Bowl, this guy has journeyman written all over him

  64. Natron Says:

Like somebody else mentioned, if GMC wasn’t a #3 draft pick, he would have been lucky to get to 1 Pro Bowl, he has the word journeyman written all over him

  65. DoooshLaRue Says:

    ^^^^^
He does indeed….. written in fancy Japanese font all over his silky kimono.

    Mmmmmmmmmmmmm

    Munch.

  66. Jerry Says:

Oh he really went out on a limb on that one! Of course he picks the defending champs.

It’s like betting on the favorite in a horse race.

  67. Destinjohnny Says:

    93 is a good dude
    But he was soft

  68. don g Says:

Love ya Gerald. However I dont agree with you. We all have opinions.

  69. JimmyJack Says:

Never liked this player. Captained some of the most pathetic and helpless defenses i never saw.

When we hired Bruce I knew we had a chance because his first order of business was to dump McCoy.

Once McCoy left my hate ended. It stops and ends on the football field for me………I caught McCoy on his appearance and now I like this guy. Well spoken, nice opinions and that smile…..He just lights up a room!! Gerald analyzing + me watching = football bliss.

  70. SPARKY Says:

What the hell, his opinion is no important than GOB, Defense , all these other guys that post on here. The only opinion that matters is yours. The rest is just fun.

  71. Goatfarmer Says:

Geraldine McCoy, a real waste of column space since 2010. How are your PED tests going, St. Gerald?

  72. E.Vi. Says:

BUCS!! I DON’T KNOW WHY PEOPLE BRING THE PACKERS UP THEY ARE LUCKY IF THEY WIN 6-8 GAMES BUCS SHOULD GO 15-2. WE SHOULD OF WON SUPERBOWL LAST YEAR BUT THEY HAD TO GIVE IT TO THE RAMS AND THEIR NEW STADIUM

  73. DoooshLaRue Says:

I can’t believe Ted Danson dated her.

  74. Big Red Says:

The internet doesn’t reflect the Buccaneer fan base. the real ones got nothing but love for GMC. the bandwagon boys just picking up on fake news and narratives because it sounds catchy Far from a HOFer, but definitely 1 of a few HL players during a very dark time as a bucs fan.
