Is Tom Brady Simply Angling For More Cash

January 25th, 2022

“Matt Stafford will make more cash than me next year.”

Joe has always believed this Tom Brady-may-retire chatter was sparked by a plant. Brady and/or his people wanted it out there. And people don’t plant stories for no good reason.

People plant stories because they are looking for a result of some sort.

And it seems Tom Pelissero of NFL Media cut right to the bone of the matter this afternoon on NFL Network. You can forget about office perks for Alex Guerrero at One Buc Palace or a fifth vacation home, or free marine gas for Tom Brady’s yacht or more time to help his kids with their homework. Brady, Pelissero hinted, could be simply looking for more money.

In his news report, Pelissero mentioned Brady’s final year of his contract with the Bucs in 2022.

“What’s next? Brady is under contract for one more year at around $10 million dollars,” Pelissero said. “That deal would obviously need to be reworked with a raise as the Bucs did a year ago if Brady is going to return in 2022.”

Well, there you have it. This is the first time Joe has heard Brady wants more money and it comes from one of the most credible NFL reporters. Frankly, $10 million for Brady is white-collar theft. His Bucs contract extension was heavily front-loaded so he pocketed about $40 million for 2021.

Always remember and never forget, when folks say it’s not about the money, it’s about the money.

Joe is reminded of the childhood classic nursery rhyme from Shakespearean novelist A.D. Clay, one he often recited for learned audiences. “Little Boy Blue — he needed the mon-nee!”

lol… AD Clay on college campuses today, the admission is for outside the performance hall to watch the crowd exit 😂

  2. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Pay the man……..it’s better to have Brady with backups than (who knows) with stars.

  3. Dew Says:

    Hell no

  4. Dew Says:

Tom is not going to blindside the front office & players. He will announce this is his last year.

  5. Leighroy Says:

Pelissero is only looking at base salary and roster bonus but forgets that 15M of his $20M signing bonus was deferred to 2022, so he’s getting 25mil in cash this year (factoid per spotrac). Still a heck of a discount for an MVP

  6. crazyBucs_CL Says:

may be, who knows…IMO is family, conditions to win ball games/glory, and obviously $$$.
with endorsements he made ~$70 mil 2021; he open his own line of clothing(profit and fame); but he played mostly(@ this point), cause he is competitive/egoistic/fighter. If this part of him is fade/gone, than he shall retire.
The problem is we can NOT offer him the same conditions he got 2020, we just can’t.
Will he come for less(not money), winning environment?? Logically NO.

  7. Marine Buc Says:

Like I’ve been saying… Brady wants to be traded to Indy.

They are primed for a SB run and they don’t have a QB.

Tom knows there is no money left in Tampa. How much money can they continue to push into the future?

Look at the Saints situation… $71 million over the cap and no QB on the roster.

  8. SB~LV Says:

A trade would bring a Kings ransom

  9. tampabuscsbro Says:

Marine Buc you know they are stuck with Wentz right?

They can’t trade him if they wanted to and have too much guaranteed money in him.

  10. SPARKY Says:

I don’t think money is what will bring him back as much as I really wonder if playing till 45 is. He put that goal of 45 out there with the TB12 method being the reason he could do it. Another thing is being the first one to reach 100,000 total yards passing. He’s only I think like 2500 or so away. Regular season and playoffs combined. Might have to add rushing yards also. Think about that, 100,000 yards!!!

  11. Im not tired anymore we Super Bowl Champs!! Says:

Traded to Indy? Come on man. I think you have a better shot at Luck coming out of retirement then that happening. The Bucs or any smart franchise would pay whatever Brady wants because he is a proven winner. Go Bucs!

  12. WalkdaPlank Says:

    This is ridiculous

Brady is the GOAT and everyone and their mother at One Buc knows that if Brady hadn’t come to Tampa the Bucs would still be the laughing stock of the NFL. We are likely headed back down to the basement if Brady leaves and the Bucs don’t pick up another proven winner.

He’s the GOAT he can just straight up ask for money and I’m sure they’ll give it to him. He doesn’t need to take a page from his backstabbing buddy Antonio Clown and plant fake stories to get a payday.

On the contrary, I believe Brady’s success has come because he isn’t the highest paid QB in the NFL or anywhere close to it and this allows his team to sign more superstars for a better chance at Super Bowls. It’s genius.

  13. Ash Says:

Lol man the speculation pretty sure after 20 plus seasons he is just thinking about retiring bucs will bend over backwards for tom seriously doubt money is the issue

  14. BucsFan81 Says:

I doubt it has anything to do with money. Brady has always been a team friendly guy taking a lot less money than the other top rated QB. Plus he knows the more money he makes it is taking away from the team to put star players around him.

  15. captivajim Says:

Brady would go to either 9ers ,, or possibly Dolphins (he & the misses bought a $25Mil property just south of there )

He’s had it with BA, BL & Bowles..Plus its time for a rebuild in Tampa which Brady dosen’t have time for

Kraft wants him to retire as a Patriot. they would bring him back for 1 game & hang his Jersey in their hof

  16. Jaymiss Pick6 Again Says:

Take it from a white collar detective – Joe is spot on…”Always remember and never forget, when folks say it’s not about the money, it’s about the money.”

  17. PassingThru Says:

Brady hasn’t had insane contract demands for over two decades.

    Why would he start now?

  18. Listnfrmafar Says:

Ya he wants to build a nest egg. If it was money why wouldn’t he just go ask for it? Not a story, you’re reaching Joe.

  19. PassingThru Says:

Take it from someone who actually supervised the dirty work on forensic audits as a CPA. It ain’t the money.

  20. Bird Says:

    Uhmmmmm

Yah. He wants to play for 10 mil. 😂

  21. View from 132 Says:

You are all nuts. At this point in his career, that’d be a simple phone call. “I’ll come back but I want X dollars.” The rest of these comments are lunacy.

  22. Lesko_Brandon Says:

Pay the guy, we are happy to have him in our stadium playing on our side. But knowing Brady’s mojo, he would rather have that money spent on a stud receiver or any player that will boost their chances of winning.

  23. ModHairKen Says:

It would be stupid not to pay him whatever HE thinks is fair. The only question in the negotiation is, “Tom, how much do we put in the blank next to the dollar sign?”

There will never be another Tom Brady. Pay him whatever he thinks is fair.

    And sign Godwin and Fournette.

  24. Swampbuc Says:

Pay the man what he wants. He won’t do a Dak Prescott or a Russel Wilson. But he needs whatever he needs to keep his dominatrix wife from killing him with honey-do projects.

    She is loathsome.

    Pay him.

  25. Vsyl Says:

I don’t think this is about money… Probably a deal about his brady brand is much more worth than any salary as someone suggested in other article

  26. alton d green Says:

I had to read this twice. Somebody didn’t do their homework. More money?????????????????????????? It has NEVER been about the money for Tom., I’ve been a career fan. I don’t think he has EVER been the highest paid QB. Does Joe know that Gisele makes way more than Tom. Together they are worth about 1/2 $billion dollars! that’s billion with a “B” so please find something else to write about

  27. SB~LV Says:

Well that is a good sign because it would mean he thinks he can play to his high standards

  28. Youngbucs Says:

    Give Brady one 100mil

  29. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Two choices……..BBB or BBB

Bring Back Brady or Build Back Better

  30. Tackleblockwin Says:

No way this is about money. Bucs have and will give him pretty much whatever he wants to come back.

  31. Hodad Says:

Joe, if Brady wanted more money he’d simply go to Licht and say give me a new deal, and it would be done. Why are you giving oxygen to this story? Like Brady needs to scheme to get more cash, what a joke.

  32. captivajim Says:

Its never been about the money for Brady.. Why now ??

  33. Bqen green Says:

Brady bought into the myth in NE, that the money he left on the table would be spent on making the team better. It was a lie then, and it’s a lie now. The cap is crap, and these owners use it to justify not paying players. Christ sake, even belichick complained in the Seth wickersham book, about having draconian budgets. The vast majority of these owners are used car salesman, interested only in cashing checks from TV deals. Front the money in the form of a signing bonus, and give him whatever he wants. He’d be stupid to turn down 40 million for one more year. Hell for 40 million, Ben would sleep with Bruce arians

  34. iamrhenry Says:

Marine Buc, your logic makes sense to me. What better way to jab the patriots and Payton Manning than by joining the Colts. Their coach is a former quarterback, they are primed for a deep run in next years playoffs plus they play in a dome. I love Brady but the man has earned the right to play wherever he desires. If the Colts were willing to give us their first and second round picks this year plus Wentz, I would have to think hard about that. While no fan of Wentz, he is an upgrade over Gabbert and/or Trask. Plus he will probably be around for a few years longer than Brady.

  35. Hodad Says:

Where’s Tom going to sail his new Yacht in Indiana? Anyone who thinks Tom wants to move to Indiana needs more mental health than AB.

  36. Defense Rules Says:

WalkdaPlank … ‘We are likely headed back down to the basement if Brady leaves and the Bucs don’t pick up another proven winner.’

You MIGHT be right, but not necessarily so. The young guys who’ll be our core group for a number of years to come learned a ton about how to win from Brady. We’ve got some good, young leadership IMO in guys like White & Winfield, and also in more senior guys like Mike Evans & several others.

But we do a lot of holes coming up, and only time will tell how effectively this front office can fill them. Several key decisions will need to be made this year that’ll set the tone for the next 4-5 years at least. Decisions like ‘Who replaces Brady?’ and ‘Do we emphasize offense or defense or try for a ‘balanced’ approach?’ Those decisions will drive where we put our $$$ and our draft picks, and we’re not exactly kicking ass in either area. Gonna be interesting …

  37. Bqen green Says:

If Brady isn’t in Frisco next year, Ben would be surprised. It’s his hometown team. They are ready to win now. The defense is nasty. Only problem is the idiot head coach. One of the reasons they lost a 28-3 lead to Brady, was because of his ineptitude. Matt Ryan famously complained that the plays took forever to spit out. Wherever Brady goes, it’s his show, with his offense.

  38. Lenny Says:

Nah. If anything it’s he wants to make sure Arians is finally gone. He’s done. Giselle is in the drivers sear now after him fending her off for 5 years. Looking at his body language vs the Rams and all these comments he looks done. I figured a year originally then done, but I do believe unless something otherworldly happens he’s finally hanging them up. The too many hits comment though is hilarious as he’s rarely touched. Man is done.

  39. Itzok Says:

Give Brady 100M guaranteed over 4 or 5 years. Who cares if he only plays one more year he’s worth it

  40. Jmarkbuc Says:

Apparently our guys didn’t learn enough about winning from Brady..not that he didn’t try and tell them.

Too many just went along for the ride, and Tom ain’t just a ride…you could see it on his face from Camp cupcake on…

    Money? Please.

  41. Dman-TX Says:

Not cash but Brady wants his offensive weapons. Brady not about the money much anymore. That likely would be the stark difference vs if we brought in Rogers. Rogers would want to get paid and I can’t blame him but we need money to also put talent around him. I think Brady comes back. These are still records to break and he isn’t 45 yet and I know my teenage boys If I was a pro QB playing at an elite level wouldn’t want me to stop. They would want to keep playing and they would want to bring their friends to games. Plus imagine a final farewell 17 game tour hopefully ending Deep in the post season. His playing would create a marketing super buzz for the NFL and for the TB12 brand. It would also Earn his boy Gronk a few more million. It would be a great story to a legendary career.

  42. dbbuc711 Says:

Yeah Tom you can have more money and we let Godwin and Jensen go elsewhere

  43. Biff Barker Says:

Everything surrounding his possible retirement is predictable. Scribes and sportscasters are obligated to ask the question every fan wants answered. Hell, most every NFL team wants to know too.
Sure. 100% about the money. Always is. But the GOAT also wants an environment too. Team, contenders only, location, family, etc. I don’t think Brady starts over with another team at this point.
But I’ve been wrong before and I’ll be there again.

  44. Rod Munch Says:

First, off pay him whatever he wants.

Second, the idea that he’s only making $10m for next year is about as disingenuous as it gets.

As Joe said, Brady got $40-million up front last offseason, ‘Brady extended his contract by one year in 2021. As part of the new contract Brady added 3 void years for salary cap purposes. Brady received a $20 million signing bonus and $20 million roster bonus as part of the deal.’

The $10m number is a cash number, but was done that way to help the cap.

Again, whatever Brady wants, you give it to him. But the framing that the Bucs are being cheap, which is how Pelissero is framing it, is fake news.

  45. Listnfrmafar Says:

I have watched this guy for over 20 years and NEVER saw him refuse to run a play, not with Weiss, O’Brien and McDaniels. It became commonplace the last two seasons. What does that tell you about his faith in BA & BL?

  46. james west Says:

give him 10% ownership of the club, a 5 year contract, and make him head coach when contract is up! i believe he can play at a super high level till he’s 50, maybe i am crazy, but this dude is thee absolute goat, super competitive hates to lose and football people gravitate to him

  47. David Says:

I don’t buy it for a second. He renegotiated so they could sign people so he can get a ring. You really think he gives a crap about money at this point? He wants rings.
On top of that, he doesn’t need to do anything for leverage, he led the league in almost everything and won a Super Bowl last year.

  48. Todd Says:

I think they redo his whole contract into a 2 year deal again gives him more money and a lower cap hit then the 19 million this year

  49. Rod Munch Says:

    james west Says:

give him 10% ownership of the club

    ——-

Actually that’s a brilliant idea. First, giving Brady 10% ownership would actually increase the price of the franchise more than 10%. Just make it impossible for him to sell or transfer the ownership for at least 10-years.

Him, as part owner, makes the team very hip, other celebrities would want stakes in the franchise, again, which increases the value of the club. Hell, the team WILL want a new stadium soon (the current place is 24-years old), and what better spokesman than Brady to go to the public for money – or, hell, lets say they just go private and build it themselves, what better spokesman for that?

That’s actually a great idea, money to be made by everyone involved, in particular the Glazers.

  50. HC Grover Says:

Inflation is doing in all these deals. Pay Brady as much as it takes.

  51. sauron's eye Says:

If he wants some more cash, he is worth it, and I’m sure they will give it to him. He has not played for 10 mil a year since mid way through his Patriots years.

  52. sauron's eye Says:

In terms of pay, I think the rookie deals suck and should be elevated. So many players never make it to a second contract. They should be better compensated. The money is there.

  53. sauron's eye Says:

10% ownership is about 300 million or mare. No way the Glazers are doing that. They will just pay a few million more upfront.

  54. steele Says:

Disagree. It’s about everything besides the cash, which he doesn’t need. Physically fine, check. Motivated, check. That leaves coaching, roster, does he have the support he needs to win a SB, and whether he can do what he wants to do on the field. The list of reasons he left NE for a fresh start need to be reviewed, right now. Therefore, a lot of questions to answer by draft time.

He won’t go to SF. They’re locked on Trey Lance, and Tom has no interest in learning Shanahan’s system.

  55. Swampbuc Says:

People that say it’s not about the money are forgetting his wife, she the winner of the Mr Ed look-alike contest. I’m surprised hes stil married to that mare.

  56. Volbuc40 Says:

It’s about Winning and nothing else. That’s why he is the GOAT. He doesn’t need the money but he Needs to win. If Tampa reloads and has a chance he will be back. No way he would walk away knowing he has another shot at a SB.

  57. Sparky Says:

Anyone who thinks Brady wants to go to another team, move his family, and learn a new system hasn’t been paying attention.

  58. Goatwatcher Says:

This is the stupidest take I’ve read on this site. Come on.

  59. lambchop Says:

Brady wants more cash? He does know the situation w/ the Bucs cap room. If he wants his toys, he’ll need to renegotiate his contract if anything. I mean, we dealt with the AB fiasco because he wanted him on the team. We didn’t need AB to win a SB. That’s for dang sure.

The guy has always been team friendly if it means bringing in more pieces to win. I don’t buy it.

  60. sasquatch Says:

I seriously doubt it’s about money. I mean, he’s foueking loaded and has always prioritized making sure the team could afford players around him over making max $$$ for himself. And he’s made plenty doing it this way. Why would he change that now? I fully believe his decision will be about family and secondarily about whether the Bucs can contend next year.

I might be persuaded to believe the retirement rumors might have been to give him leverage against the team so they will sign Lenny and Jensen and a quality #3 receiver. That’s 100% more plausible than simply being about money.

But I really believe he is actually considering retirement and that he is probably done.

  61. Eigie Says:

My biggest disappointment on this site since I started coming here to read more about the Bucs is probably this one. Even with his very first contract with his former team, he refused – that is, HE REFUSED – to take more money. He settled for a contract that he said was enough for his family to live with for the rest of their lives. Year after year, contract after contract, he actually didn’t ask for more in his paycheck because he wanted his teammates to get paid. If only people will ignore all the outside talk, you will see that, he may be super competitive, but he is not driven by greed.

  62. LakelandSteve Says:

C’mon Joe, so he may want a little more than $10mil. next year but don’t you think Brady or his agent would just call the Bucs and say he needs a little more money or he’s going to retire. Brady would only return for one reason and that is if he thinks they will have a team that can legitimately win a Super Bowl. Brady didn’t turn into Aaron Rodgers and become a Deva over night. There may be something going on behind the scenes that we don’t know about. Like, Brady wants the Bucs to go after a certain free agent or something like that, and this is his way of making sure they do.

  63. Mr Bean Says:

This is the biggest non story. He doesn’t need to angle for anything. If he needs more money he will say so.

  64. Rod Munch Says:

10% ownership is about 300 million or mare. No way the Glazers are doing that. They will just pay a few million more upfront.

    ——-

Brady being a co-owner would literally raise the price of the franchise by more than $300m, plus it’s all play money anyways until it’s sold. Also you don’t make someone a co-owner as a way to pay their salary, you do it as a long-term marketing deal, where you want to make other people want to be part of the Bucs because Brady is part of the team. You would not do that for ANY other player, you’d only do that for Brady, because he’s a worldwide icon, and you want him involved with the team for many years, beyond just playing.

  65. R.Forte Says:

    Yeah, Brady’s strapped. What dribble!

  66. Eddie Marz Says:

Why doesn’t anyone believe Tom Brady? He says it’s about family and what’s best for them also, not just him. I wouldn’t speculate too much with stupid things. Take Brady at his word.

  67. Izod Says:

Tom Brady can’t be the QB here forever! We need to be able to move on, just the let man go. We were lucky to have him here as long as we did.

Yes he was the GOAT, but an old goat who sometimes played like it, and we can and should be able to find an adequate replacement.

  68. Oneilbuc Says:

    Izod I agree with you a 💯 % !!
