Catching The Ball

May 16th, 2021

Best hands in 2020.

If a receiver hasn’t dropped a pass and he is still a backup, you just know your wide receiver roster is stacked.

And that’s the case with furniture-tossing, bicycle-throwing, moving-truck-hassling Bucs receiver Antonio Brown.

The PFF tribe decided to do a breakdown on receivers. As we all know, drop stats are wildly inconsistent and depend upon who is studying the tape. One man’s drop is another man’s bad pass. You get the drift. That’s a big reason whhy dropped stats are not an official NFL stat.

Anyway, this Sam Monson, one of the high priests of the PFF tribe, studied receivers and concluded Brown didn’t drop one catchable pass thrown to him by park-violating, home-invading, NFLPA-ignoring, down-forgetting, handshake-stiffing, jet-ski-losing, biscuit-baking, tequila-shooting, smartphone-phobic, waffle-grilling, trophy-throwing, roller-coaster-scared, numbers-rules-peeved, Bucs Super Bowl-winning quarterback Tom Brady.

And Brown started less than half of the games he played! That is just how loaded the Bucs are at receiver. And now we know why Brady wanted Brown so badly. He simply doesn’t drop passes.

Another interesting tidbit is Chris Godwin is one of the best receivers in the game for hauling in contested passes. The PFF tribe has a made-up stat (and what would they be without making up stats?) known as “contested pass percentage.”

Of Godwin’s 13 targets when he was covered, he caught nine, a 69 percent mark that was sixth-best in the NFL. Brown was just behind him at 66 percent.

(Broncos speed demon K.J. Hamler is simply horrible at trying to catch a football. That dude couldn’t catch The Sickness if he slept in a New York nursing home.)

Tony Hamilton is another nice pick up for the BUCS…

Great special team player and depth in defensive back field!

20-0 is really starting to look attainable 🥳💥

  2. StickinUp4Centers Says:

Jerry Judy plays on the Broncos, not the Raiders. Henry Ruggs was the rookie speedster from Alabama that the Raiders selected in 2020.

  3. Correction Says:

Hey Joe, Jerry Jeudy plays for Denver………

  4. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Brown sucks. Unreliable during the regular season.

  5. Medicated Pete Says:

    AB is no Arrelious Benn

  6. Atlbucs28 Says:

Joe .. “Poor Chucky. He apparently cannot get Aaron Rodgers!”
I have often wondered if it was the now famous lack of people skills Chucky has.. That squashed the Brett Favre trade to Tampa mid flight, instead of the extra draft pic surprise mid flight… The Favre effect, would it have matched the Brady effect???

  7. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

Antonio Brown is gonna have a strong year with our Bucs.

  8. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

Bonzai. Sounds like you’re confusing Brown with Fournette.

  9. Casual Observer Says:

I think the Bucs may have the best corps of receivers in NFL history. It will be an exciting season – one for the books.

  10. Mellenha@comcast.net Says:

Bonzai it is apparent you know nothing about football. When there is a post on the best way to remove grass stains form uniforms we’d be happy to hear your input. Brown is the best receiver Bucs have and one of the best in the NFL. Wait for this season, you’ll see.

  11. Joe Says:

Brown sucks. Unreliable during the regular season.

???? Feel free to explain in great detail how a guy who doesn’t drop the ball is “unreliable.” Unless you really meant “reliable?”

  12. Hans Says:

Hey Joe. Your 47ish adjective description of Our QB is past its due date. Not funny or clever anymore and it just makes your otherwise thoughtful analysis cumbersome to get to.

  13. SufferingSince76 Says:

Ok, what am I missing? Where in this article does Joe mention Jerry Jeudy or the Raiders?

  14. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Sounds like there’s another trophy toss next year, it should go to AB.

If AB is our #3 WR…….unaware fans out there are wondering….who the hell is #1 & #2.

  15. Cobraboy Says:

I often wonder if I’m watching the same team as the casuals do…

  16. BUCFAN4LIFE Says:

We are SO loaded at the WR position ! GO BUCS !!!!

  17. Allbuccedup Says:

Alvin S. AB will have a strong year providing his past don’t come back to haunt him.

  18. SB Says:

I trust Pro Football Reference. They have AB at a 72.6 catch %

hey have Chris Godwin at a 77.4 catch %… I have no Idea what those orangutans in their Irish dorm rooms are looking at.

  19. SB Says:

Also in my research so far there are ZERO WRs in the NFL with a better catch % than Godwin.

  20. Buc4evr Says:

Ha Ha KJ Hamler, good one! Any other team AB would be the number 1 WR. May end up being #1 this season? The guy runs perfect routes, gets separation and catches the damn ball. He will have a bigger role this season.

  21. SB~LV Says:

Giddy at the thought of starting the season with AB completely up to speed with offense, the town, his off field “distractions “ seemingly in the rear view mirror.
The offense is crazy strong heading into summer TC .

  22. Buckaroo Boozie Says:

Yes ABnormal is unquestionably a prolific receiver… let’s just hope his check up from the neck up lasts a whole Season… If so than it’s bon voyage anyway…. $Greedy Kook$

  23. Ben green Says:

AB is still a top a top ten receiver. His ability to get open quickly is what Brady drools over. I believe he’ll lead the team in targets. As a human being, I find him repugnant, but his skills are undeniable. Him and Brady with a full season could set records

  24. Kalind Says:

Lol Joe. Nice burn on Hamler man. I actually laughed out loud

  25. BradyBucs Says:

KYLE TRASK THROWING DIMES AT ROOKIE MINI-CAMP. 🙂

  26. Joe Says:

    Kalind:

    Thank you. 🙂

  27. adam from ny Says:

ain’t no room on this team if you’re a half azzed receiver…

this receiver’s room is for straight ballers only!

    #AndYouMustSportAyeRockInYourEar 🙂

  28. August 1976 Buc Says:

AB is one of the best receivers in the HISTORY of the NFL. 6 years of 100 catch seasons. So if he is anywhere near his ability, he will have a great season just as long as he continues to be a good teammate with the Bucs like last year, he will continue to be a great addition. GO BUCS!!!!

  29. lambeau Says:

I wouldn’t really call AB a backup, as the Bucs are in 3 WR sets 90% the time.

  30. Eddie Marz Says:

I think being suspended was a reality check for Brown. Ain’t gonna make millions outside the NFL. Glad he stepped in line, because he’s a great talent. GO BUCS!

  31. Anonymous Says:

SufferingSince76 Im with you. I dont get it

  32. MarkR Says:

Brown catches everything thrown his way. We don’ need stat sheets to tell us that. Nor do we need stats to tell us that Godwin is one of the best at catching contested passes. These things are obvious from even the most casual observation. If they stay healthy and on the field, it’s going to be a great year.
