Donovan Smith And The COVID

December 18th, 2020

Start in jeopardy Sunday

Updated 12:08 p.m. – Now this is really starting to get worrisome.

Bucs left tackle Donovan Smith was placed on the COVID/reserve list this morning. And he will not play Sunday, per a statement Smith issued. Per the statement, he had close contact with a family member that has The Sickness.

Smith is a rock on the Bucs’ offensive line. He has missed one start in his six years in the league. That is impressive.

That makes two Bucs starters on the COVID/Reserve list, for now. Ronald Jones and Smith.

The specialists who were placed on the COVID/Reserve list on Tuesday, kicker Ryan Succop, punter Bradley Pinion and long snapper Zach Triner, are back on the active roster and cleared to play.

Smith, as fans may remember, was public with his concerns about playing during the pandemic. Smith has an infant daughter.

In jeopardy? Pretty sure he’s out…

Bucs / Smith’s statement said he is not playing Sunday.

  2. Nick2 Says:

    DAMN that is a problem.

  3. Robert Says:

we need to prime his replacement anyway

  4. Robert Says:

question: If all the kickoff team was placed on covid list, why not all the RB’s?

  5. gofortheface30 Says:

Mmmmm can’t wait for the Josh Wells experience.

  6. Tnoles Says:

Wow what now?? Josh Wells? Man I’m just turning and running on the right side of the line and I’m boot legging Brady to the right to get away from the dive that the left side will be lol

  7. Tamoabaybucfan Says:

Of all the players to end up on the Covid list….it’s D. Smith….Mr. Maybe Opt Out…..

Smith For Julio……?…..not a good trade…..As much as there are complaints about Smith…..I will guarantee you that Brady would rather have Smith available.

  8. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Smith isn’t as bad as some here make out. He has a few bad games, but he also has more great games. The bad ones are just more memorable because Oline guys are only talked about when they make mistakes.

You can bet our opponents will be testing that side though.

  9. AlteredEgo Say: Your comment is awaiting moderation. Says:

He is on the same list as the kickers.. was exposed to someone that tested positive… if enough time passes and he tests negative he is good to go

  10. Mitch Says:

At least he doesn’t have it and will hopefully be able to play next week against the lions.

The one game Josh Wells played for him before the Bucs won and the entire OL only gave up 2 sacks on the day. Atlanta only has 25 sacks on the year and their leader has 3.5 sacks total. I think they will be just fine.

  11. unbelievable Says:

Well, knowing Leftwich, he’ll probably keep calling runs behind the LG/LT cuz ya know, he is a genius and all…

Who knows? Maybe his replacement will surprise us and play well. Trying to be positive…

  12. Bobby M. Says:

Put Wirf over there…..might as well give him a look. Cant be any worse then whomever the current back up is.

  13. Ftmyersbuc Says:

The reason all the rb’s weren’t put on the list seems to me they are sitting rojo cause of the finger and finger have to waste an active roster spot on him now that they have a covid list. Ir is 6 weeks before you can br reactivated. Covid reserve is i think 2 negative tests in avrow so 2 days, unless you were positive then it’s 10 days.

    My theory anyways

  14. Allbuccedup Says:

Next man up! I guess next week it will be Brady.

  15. Buc50 Says:

Yeah put Wirfs over there because LT is just like RT…unless he’s been taking snaps in practice, it’s not that simple.

  16. SoFloBuc Says:

How ironic it would be Smith!! $&%#!! if this gets worse hope we can postpone the game rather lose all our starters!! We aren’t deep enough!!

Hope all is good with our boys and they get the easy version of the Vid!!

  17. Coburn Says:

Nah altered he’s out. You can’t get a reliable test in first four days of exposure or so. Will come back negative even if he has it

  18. Nick2 Says:

Wow yes I am scared now. Josh Wells??? Yikes!!!! Tom Brady blindsided before the playoffs is not a pretty picture. I hope he has eyes in the back of his head he will need them.

  19. Leighroy Says:

Where are all the Donovan Smith haters?! Shouldn’t you be gloating over the opportunity to watch anyone else play LT? So quiet when he isn’t available but when he is, “he sucks.” Smh

  20. Dr. ClodHopper Says:

Too bad Clayborn wasnt still in Atlanta

  21. Cobraboy Says:

    More “false positives?”

  22. Architek Says:

I hope he and his family is okay and healthy. But football wise – I don’t care! I’m over him!

He would be a slightly better Kenyatta Walker except he’s available and durable.

    LOL

  23. richardtyson Says:

All that talk about holding out if the NFL didn’t make enough safe measures and it ends up being his own people that are the problem.

  24. NPRSageBoy Says:

    Knucklehead

  25. mark2001 Says:

Best Wishes to Donovan and his family. He is obviously a man that takes this virus seriously. It seems it has touched a loved one. God Bless.

  26. Pewter Power Says:

The other team has to have pass rushers for this to worry me. These things are not completely avoidable but josh wells is 100 times worse than Smith and how much practice has he had this week

  27. JustBucNwin Says:

Use heavy TE sets and get creative with quick slants, wheel routes, and screens. Do your job!!

  28. DoooshLaRue Says:

    Bonzai

I’d love to know which games Donovan played great.
Please tell me so I can rewatch them.
    I’ve got to see this.

  29. Señor Harry in Costa Rica Says:

I think I might move Wirfs to LT and put Wells in at RT. Wells might do better there and lets see what Wirfs looks like at his new position for next year.

  30. Anthony Dickson Says:

That is what is called irony, with how Smith voiced his concerns about playing this year because he was concerned about getting the sickness from playing and spreading it to his infant, I guess those concerns didn’t include taking precautions during his off time. Makes one question what his priorities really are.

  31. orlbucfan Says:

Well, the so-called experts on here have bitched, screamed and moaned about Smith all season. So, he is out due to CV protocol. So is Julio Jones due to injury. Bucs offense better win tomorrow. The 2 Methuselahs better deliver. Defense and ST will be ready.
