“I Came Here To Block, Baby.”

September 25th, 2020

Rob Gronkowski knows he’s been invisible in the Bucs’ passing attack, and he was all smiles about it today while being peppered with questions trying to get to the bottom of his lack of production.

Gronk would not play along.

“I’m a blocking tight end. You know, I came here to block, baby,” he proclaimed with sarcasm in his voice.

“So four targets is four more than I thought I was going to get. Yeah.”

Gronk repeated his blocking tight end line when asked again about his red zone work in past years. He added that game plans change and he’s used to big games and then getting just a few catches the following week.

Joe jumped in and played along with Gronk, asking him to grade his blocking since he’s now a blocking tight end.

“I feel like my blocks, you know, as a blocking tight end, have been pretty good,” Gronk said. “But now I’m a blocking tight end so I gotta up my game a little bit, for sure. And that can definitely improve, technique, form and all that; that’s what helps your game big time.”

Joe’s not worried about Gronk. If he turns out to just be mainly a blocker and the Bucs win, then Joe can live with that. Yeah, in that scenario Gronk would be a waste of money, but for a one-year deal to make Tom Brady happy, it’s all good.

He is a 10 mil mouthpiece for brady. He was brought in to be a voice of why tom is the way he is and what he does. He is here to help tom change the culture. That is how I have viewed his signing from day 1. To teach, mentor and assist. Not to catch the ball. And i am happy with that.

  2. El Buco Realisto Says:

Just another example of a player that got bull spitted by ole stale biscuit!!!!!!!!!!!!

    go bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. 813bucboi Says:

so there you have it for all the “BL isnt using all the weapons” folks….lol…

gronk will become a force in the passing game as the season goes on….he’s till getting into shape imo…

right now, BL is establishing an identity with the run game…teams already know we can pass….can we pound a defense and seal the deal with the run game in the 4th quarter?…we did that vs CAR….we’ll repeat that vz DEN….

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  4. BillyBucFan Says:

I hope Denver looks at him this way.
He WILL be a factor this year at some point.

I’m actually ok with it not being until the playoffs.
My money is on a 6 catch 75 yds and a TD this week though.

  5. Colonel Angus Says:

Gronks targets will come. He’s too good not to be used, especially in the red zone. The money is spent, no use in crying about it.

  6. Tampabaybucfan Says:

If Gronk is just a blocking TE……then I am the ghost of Vince Lombardi masquerading as TBBF

  7. JimmyJack Says:

    I love the attitude.

But I got one problem. Catch the freaking ball!!!!

  8. JimmyJack Says:

But no complain about Gronk’s 10 million if ya know whats good for you. Just go right over and look at Toms slary………..Tom easily, easily could of asked for 5-6 more. He darn sure could of asked for 10 more..Tom and Gronk were a total team package. You eithersign both of none. The Bucs made the proper decision if it gets us a playoff win.or 6

  9. james west Says:

just stack the “Ws” that’s all i care about

  10. Hodad Says:

I’ve been saying this all along. Gronk is Tom’s wing man. He’s here to protect his friend by helping block on either side as needed. Gronk doesn’t want to catch passes in the seams anymore getting his legs cut out from under him. Gronk is here to be Tom’s body guard, and is doing a good job.

  11. ModHairKen Says:

I’m confused. Is he a blocking Tight End?

  12. Bobby M. Says:

IMO….I think Gronk would stay for a lot less if needed. He seems like he’s here to have fun, obviously he’s being well compensated for it but I dont believe that’s his motivation at all. He’s been there, done that. I think he’s enjoying the game again and part of that is not being the focal point of the defense or the media.

Would he play for the vet minimum….tough to say but i think he would if his only responsibility was to keep doing what he’s doing and we’re winning.

  13. Roy T. Buford Says:

    Gronk: “…here to block, baby!”

Professor Turgeson (Sam Kinison): “Good answer. Good answer. I’m gonna keep my eye on you.”

  14. WhoCares Says:

Who wouldn’t want to play for the best QB the Bucs have ever had? Unlike last years QB. Brady doesn’t try to win by sucking on his “W” (Wang?)

  15. Iamabuc Says:

Sixteen games, guys!!…why does everybody insist on the Bucs using ALL of their weapons in one game or in every game for that matter….in case you didn’t notice, the season just started…let it play out. I’m pretty sure we’ll get to see all our weapons shine. Unlike you guys I’m patient. I’ve been waiting for this for too long, I want to savor it, sip it like a good wine. Go Bucs!!

  16. Darin Says:

Anyone watching can tell he’s not in shape. Once he can run a route at the pace he is supposed to he will get some catches. In the meantime it’ll be a few targets and probably a few incompletions. Block baby block then run baby run in your spare time!!

  17. Bird Says:

That was a total burn. Sarcasm flowing out his mouth.

Its obvious he wants the ball. He wants opportunities to make plays. That is what he has accomplished his whole NFL career. The GOAT of tight ends is being forced to block. They dont call his
    Number ?

He knows he is making 10 mil and he is A very confident player but pretty humble too. It probably makes him uneasy making that scratch to Just block.

Now if bucs winning i think he takes the high road. Bit if they struggle he may turn sourpuss

    ——

And , bucboi i disagree on Leftwich. And i know they were number 3 Offense last year. However, The play calling Seems blah. Not creative. I know it takes time and i hope you are right on building an identity . I am concerned. Arians better be looking over bl shoulder

  18. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Bucboi

You’re a little off with “seal the deal on the fourth quarter “

What we did Against Carolina was hold on for dear life. Offense didn’t do squat for most of the second half and the defense went into prevent mode. Then Fournette got a lucky run. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

With all due respect, you’re starting to sound like Buco realisto without the !!!!

  19. Ryan Cannon Says:

This response by Gronk is great for a number of reasons.

One, it doesn’t seem like he takes himself too seriously, which is a great trait to have in general.

More importantly, it might signal to opposing defenses that he isn’t a threat to catch… this is a perk because, rest assured, a defense will pay dearly if they stop paying attention to him.

  20. Buc Bro Says:

Further proof of the ineptitude of Arians and the blandness of Leftwich calling plays

  21. SOEbuc Says:

Knowledge to our younger, larger talented TE like OJ and Hudson.

  22. Bucsfanman Says:

    LOL! I love Gronk!
Don’t fall for the “banana in the tailpipe” trick! He’s going to have his days, it’s a matter of time and opportunity.

  23. catcard202 Says:

Gronk probably going to catch 2 TD passes this week…

  24. Clean House Says:

That was sarcasm for all of you geniuses

  25. BigHog Says:

He said it…now believe him, he came to block and don’t be fool, that ain’t worth 10million to this team!!!What is done is done…I want to see runners my backs pounding that rock right off his tail end…BLOCK SOMEBODY GRONK!!! HENNY AND HOG…get yo-self some!!

  26. Buczilla Says:

This dude has come through in the clutch so many gosh damn times. I’m not giving up on him after just two games.

  27. Mike Johnson Says:

Bucs had no biz paying Gronl all that silly money. The man has bot completed an entire season since 2011. Makes you wonder. He’s makin more cash than quite a few of our accomplished players . Makes you wonder……..

  28. Ricky Ricardo Says:

I thought Jenna’s question was uncalled for. It was like she was trying to stir up trouble. You could almost hear everyone in the room go ‘On no she didn’t’ including Gronk.

  29. Bellingham Bucs Fan Says:

Watch tape. He’s been an elite blocking tight end for two games now. When he starts making splash plays, the casuals can find something else to whine about.

  30. lowercaseg Says:

    great response

  31. FanO’Bucs Says:

    Establish run game.
Expand later in season opening up more passing to te’s. Keep Gronkowski healthy for late football.

    That’s what I’m guessing
