Buccaneers Sign A Running Back

February 19th, 2019

Another old Bruce Arians friend has joined the Buccaneers.

This time it’s a player.

Running back Andre Ellington didn’t take a regular-season snap last season, but he logged 61 regular season games with 17 starts through 4 1/2 seasons with Arians in Arizona.

Ellington, 30, had a strong 2013 rookie season as a complementary player, then was a bust as the 2014 starter. After that, he was a bench guy who had less than 100 carries over the next three seasons. The Cardinals released him midway through the 2017 campaign.

Think of the former sixth-round pick as an older, bigger, less experienced version of Jacquizz Rodgers.

“This tells Kobe that BA wants his RBs to catch the ball…

believe it or not Ellington is our only RB that can take it to the house”

Gotta admit I was really tired of seeing Rodgers getting so many carriers so he’s gone and we’ll be drafting an every down back because it appears that’s not barbers game to be a complete back. Good to know we’ll be drafting a back this year, do it until you get it right

  9. c-spann Says:

    @JP_09

I love watching LJ Scott run. He’s amazingly patient. I also love Nebraska’s Devine Ozigbo. Very smart player.

  16. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

This is BA just giving one of his guys a chance to make it back on the field. Arizona wanted him to be their feature back but he just kept getting hurt. I will be a little surprised if he makes the team or has any significant role.

  17. AlteredEgo Says:

Just a coaches respectful bone $$$$ to a old player… that is big money when you are out of the NFL… don’t expect him in September

  18. BucEmUp Says:

HTSR, LMAO! YEAH dude is slow.

I agree Alaskan doubt he makes the team. Just being given a shot to run around on the practice field, catch some passes etc.

  19. Mike Johnson Says:

I can think of much better complimentary Running backs. Butt..All new coaches bring in a few..tag alongs. Koetter, and Lovie did it. Arians will probably add a couple more Arizona has beens.

  20. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Ellington won’t be the last BA player to be signed, that’s for sure……nothing at all wrong with that……we need coaches that will coach for him and players that will play for him……
An average motivated player beats a good unmotivated player every time.

  21. AKickInTheBucNuts Says:

    meh.

  22. VFL98 Says:

Glad to see BA is helping old friends out, after all Licht help him land a job glad he is returning the favor.

  23. StoutGospel Says:

Camp hand….maybe for that waste ROJO to learn from…can cut no problem. Nuthin doin age 30. Brittle as can be, even with a year off.

    Meh…is right.

Let’s not take the “getting the band back together thing”…way to effing far, UNLESS, it’s proven to the objective eye to STRENGTHEN the Bucs of this here franchise. More faith in some Bowles pieces coming in cheap in the secondary. But take it eezy on this crap.

    Go Bucs!

  24. BucsFIRE Says:

    How is this for
    IT’s a SMALL WORLD…

In 2013, Andre Ellington was traded from the NYG to the AZ Cardinals…
for Ryan Nassib QB (brother of Bucs DE Carl Nassib)

  25. MadMax Says:

Oh I remember him…dj swearinger laid a hit on him thats still a highlight from the clemson/carolina rivalry….its on youtube, id post it but I think the joes stopped allowing that.

  26. sandwichman Says:

i think hiring bruce arians was a mistake. his staff is garbage imo and he signs this bum??? dark times ahead that i want no part of

  27. JP_09 Says:

@sandwichman go jump off the skyway, I heard it’s fun!!!!

  28. Elita Vita Says:

Seems it’s Christmas time and Bucco Bruce is Santa Clause. Like Oprah’s famous show….”and you get a car…and you get a car… and you get a car”. With BA it’s… if you have had a good rapport with BA in the past it’s….. “and you get a job, and you get a job…and you get a job”. That being said there might be a method to his “madness”…it very much promotes his idea of the power of “family” on a football team..let’s see how this will unfold.

  29. Jarod Says:

Draft Memphis running back HENDERSON ! 2ND or 3rd round would work and he will be a really good back baring injuries…

  30. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Gotta be just to compete. A last chance for a player who is not up to snuff.

  31. Issaic haggins Says:

The GM is not in control and that is a problem or not having a GM capable of being in control may be the correct way to look at it !!!

  32. OneBuc55 Says:

Imho this is an upgrade over Rodgers…

Let’s be honest, would Jaquiz still be in playing in the NFL if not for Dirk and Mike… probably not… Ellington will help Rojo alot…

  33. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Apparently, the Bucs only want to pay Humphries $6m per year according to some sources. His camp wants $8m.

Give the man his money! Take it from the money Jackson’s salary will clear up!

  34. Defense Rules Says:

Issaic … The signings right now (BEFORE free agency even starts) are insignificant. But a signing like this could well be taken as an indicator of who’s REALLY in charge. Ellington is obviously a BA signing. He was the new Arizona HC when Ellington was drafted in 2013 (6th rnd draftee by the Cards). He underwhelmed as a RB to say the least, but was a fairly decent receiver. Did OK getting time in 2013 & 2014 but in 2015 the Cards drafted David Johnson. Ellington was just an after-thought it looks like once they drafted Johnson. Hasn’t played since he got 8 games with Arizona & 4 games with Houston in 2017.

Joe nailed it … “older, bigger, less experienced version of Jacquizz Rodgers”. So did Alaskan … “surprised if he makes the team or has any significant role.”

  35. Rod Munch Says:

“Think of the former sixth-round pick as an older, bigger, less experienced version of Jacquizz Rodgers”

That is literally what I thought the moment I saw the picture on the front page.

Anywho I assume he’s mainly here to help guys learn the system and to be a depth guy. It’s not bad to have guys like this around when you’re learning a new system.

    ——–

    No.

    $8m for a 4th WR…
    $7m for a 2nd TE…

You kind of need to build a team, not a receiver depth chart.

  37. catcard202 Says:

Camp Fodder/Role Specific RB at league min…Give him a 30% chance of making the 53man roster.

  38. joestang Says:

here we go again, we will soon become a dumping ground for all ex-cardinal rejects. Licht must have had his hands on this move. We always settle for the guy that sucks or hasn’t played. Joe you describe this guy as a older, bigger less experienced Rodgers. GREAT PICK, you might as well grab Peterson.

  39. Buccaneerscotty Says:

    Starting to feel like lovie

  40. StoutGospel Says:

    @catcard202….

Hmmm…that post at 8:25pm sounds a whole lot like the post above at 5:54 pm. Which, you know, came before 8:25pm.

    Hmmm.

    Go Bucs!

  41. Kobe Faker Says:

    “Whats up with the hatin?

BA wants and needs the screen game to exploit the linebackers

We have no one in our RB group who can catch a wheel route and take it and score

Klueless was absolutely the worst screen designer in the NFL

BA might not be Andy Ried when it comes to the screen game but pretty close

BA had Johnson close to 1k yards reciving from the RB position

The drastic play that will be the big difference from BAs vs Klueless passing scheme will be the huge production coming from the screens to our RBs and OJ

2019 OJ will be top 3 TE

only Kelse and Gronk will be better

BA is going to score score and score”

30 years old for a running back is pushing it. Don’t think he is much more than camp bait.

At least this will end this organizations weird love affair with Jacquizz Rodgers.

  46. oar Says:

Shocking and appalling….what head coach brings in players he’s coached before!

  47. BucsFIRE Says:

    ^^ Exactly.

It is bizarre seeing some of these comments…

    AGAIN –
EVERY SINGLE COACH who has EVER hired on to a new coaching job has brought in a few players from his former team.
    EVERY SINGLE ONE.
