“If You Don’t Draft Me, I’m Going To Give Your Defense Hell.”

March 2nd, 2018

Confident.

Derrius Guice likes to run the ball. And he likes to run the ball hard.

And in his mind, if a coach wants a running back to punish people and wear a defense down to be exploited in the fourth quarter, you won’t find a better runner than him in the draft.

Yesterday at the NFL combine in Indianapolis, running backs all gathered around podiums to talk football and sell themselves to the NFL at large. And Guice, full of confidence, informed anyone listening that he is the best available runner between the hashmarks.

“We didn’t really pass as much in college, like other running backs do,” Guice said of his time at LSU. “But as a runner in between the tackles, in my opinion, there’s no one better than me in that area. Point blank.

“I run hard. I hardly ever get tackled by one person. And I’m very powerful. I get a lot of hidden yardage. … I’m actually glad I had to face a lot of loaded boxes, because you get a lot of them in the NFL. I mean, obviously, it’s more of a pass threat, but nine times out of 10, when I watch Jacksonville run, Leonard was running against a lot of loaded boxes as well. I feel like it really prepared me for the next level. So I know what to expect, and what to be ready for against NFL defenses.

“If you don’t draft me, I’m going to give your defense hell.”

Now this sort of gets Joe’s mouth watering. If the Bucs want to go old school, tjhen go out and get Andrew Norwell and another competent free agent guard — provided J.R. Sweezy is still hurt (again) — and then go smashmouth on people with Guice.

Later, Joe asked Guice about how many players LSU puts into the NFL and how it seems many of those play better at the next level.

Guice smiled and said, “That’s why I chose LSU.”

    Saquon 40 yard dash = 4.41 (1st attempt) @ 233lbs— 233 freaking pounds!

Mayock just said that only one (other) player in the HISTORY of the combine bench pressed at least 25 reps and had a vertical leap of 40″ or more–Myles Garrett. Well, Saquon had 29 reps and 41.5″ vertical leap.

Runs a 4.41 @ 233lbs. For all those wondering about the rest:

    Guice–219 lbs–4.46 14 pounds lighter
    Chubb–235 lbs–4.58 2 pounds heavier
    Michel–218 lbs–4.56 15 pounds lighter
Ronald Jones II–216 lbs–4.66 (hurt hamstring during) 17 pounds lighter
    Penny–220 lbs–4.47 13 lbs lighter

Do some homework, too, on Guice off the field. Yeah.

    Go Bucs!

  2. buc4life Says:

I like Guice. Nelson, Guice would be a hell of a 1-2 picks.

  3. Jolly Bucs Fan Says:

Anyone else up for trading a 3rd and a 5th to swap to #4 ovr with cleveland for either Saquan Barkely (truly generational talent) or Chubb (position of needed and an immediate impact player)

  4. 813bucboi Says:

    give me guice!!!!!!!

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!

  5. LakeLand Says:

Give me an All-Purpose RB like Alvin Kamara, Marshall Faulk, Roger Craig etc.

  6. tmaxcon Says:

go get barkley Licht… Make a statement if you are delusional enough to believe this team is really close go get barkely and go all in!

  7. BetterBuccinBelieveIt Says:

    Yup @ Tmax…yup!

    Go Bucs!

  8. Jolly Bucs Fan Says:

for once I agree with tmax as you can see above, it would hurt a bit to trade up. But I think there is only 1 player who could single-handedly put us in playoff contention.

    Saquan Barkely.

Though I would also be fine trading up to #4 for Chubb, less immediate impact because you need CBs behind him, but would definitely be a cornerstone of our defense for years

  9. Dewey Selmon Says:

Trade a 3 and 5 to move up to #4, to try and get Barkley and Chubb, who will go #1 and#3. lol. oh boy.

  10. Jolly Bucs Fan Says:

Lol, well @dewey you dont make the trade prior to the draft. But lets say 1 of them make it to #4 (which, its the draft and lots of different things can shake out) well I say you jump on it.

  11. ndog Says:

We have to many holes to be trading up. Stay put get one of Barkley, Chubb, M. Fitzpatrick or Nelson (most likely), sign a top notch guard (have two great guards is awesome for Jamies and running game), sign a top notch CB, sign a compliment RB to P. Barber, then use the rest of the draft to picks to select the best dlinemen and CB/S’s that are there.

  12. Blake_Bucsfan Says:

Extremely impressive showing from Saquon Barkley. No real surprise though.

Expect Quenton Nelson, Minkah Fitzpatrick, and Vita Vea to show out as well.

  13. tmaxcon Says:

    ndog

i agree with you but if Barkley is as good as projected it will open up the field for evans, godwin and djax. use free agency to grab some defenders. bucs need a mid pack defense in SCORING. yards are meaningless. mid pack scoring defense and Barkley even the glazers curse and the leader of the losing culture cancer93 could not screw it up.

  14. tmaxcon Says:

Points wins championships not defense. Franchise QB and mid pack defenses is the formula for contending consistently and winning multiple championships not just one every 2 decades. every single defense first team has won a single championship and crumbled. ravens won with great defense but two completely different teams so not a far comparison plus time gap.

  15. Guzziep Says:

Rashad Penny 4.43 2nd run, he’s a more likely Bucs target

  16. tmaxcon Says:

i’d rather lose giving 100% and taking a few gambles than losing scared like the failed dungy years.

  17. BetterBuccinBelieveIt Says:

    Food for thought………

    40 yard dash times (combine):

    Saquon Barkley–4.41
    Zeke–4.47
    Fournette–4.51
    Kamara–4.56

For all and any of those that think saving all the picks is the way to go, or thinking that NFL success lies in simply plugging holes in the slice of swiss cheese, ponder these:

2nd round pick–Justin Evans (getting us near the playoffs?)
5th round pick–Jeremy Mchnichols (out of NFL)
1st round pick–VHGIII (getting us near the playoffs?)

    On and on and on..

    Go Bucs!

  18. Jolly Bucs Fan Says:

Goes back to what the @Joes always say,

You think the Falcons regret giving up the bank for Julio Jones?

and I think a league best RB is more of an impact overall than a league best WR.

If Licht believes Barkely is that, then you make the move.

At this stage I think you either trade up for the player you want (Chubb/Barkely) or you trade down. I dont think Vea is a top-10 talent and I dont think Minkah is a scheme/positional fit

  19. ndog Says:

Problem is Tmax we are faaaaaaar away from middle of the pack on defense. All we have is two good linebackers and a (hopefully) up and coming safety. That’s its. We have no D-line and at this point no corners that is not close to middle of the pack my friend.

  20. Lord Cornelius Says:

“Franchise QB and mid pack defenses is the formula for contending consistently and winning multiple championships not just one every 2 decades”

Actually pretty much every team that has won the SB the last 18 years has had a top 10 scoring defense and most have been top 5.

While the Pats/Eagles game was a shootout – they were both top 5 defenses last year.

Common misconception about the “modern passing game”

Defense still wins championships. Defense is why the Saints went 7-9 for 3 straight years while fielding a top scoring offense before being a contender last year.

  21. ndog Says:

I hate to say this but if we do not end up with Barkley, Chubb, M. Fitzpatrick or Nelson this is going to be a failed draft in my eyes as this team needs elite talent not plug in guys, we need alpha dogs on this team as right now we have just two Jameis and Kwon everyone else is just plug in’s. We need more and only those 4 players have a legit shot to be that next year. Many others can but they will be in a prove it mode for a least a year but these four can walk In the door with that alpha dog attitude and more importantly alpha dog ability next year.

  22. BetterBuccinBelieveIt Says:

Adding on to @Jolly…the Falcons went from #22 way up there. We’re at #7.

    @guzziep,

Let’s go with the Rashad Penny thing. Say you give him ALL the Oline players both draft and FA that everyone on here at some point drools over.

You think Penny keeps your job??? (Licht’s) HELLLL noo…..

Perhaps people could ALSO look at the dimension, that if Licht does trade up (to essentially #1–night of draft), then all the picks used in 2018/2019….couldn’t be SCREWED UP by Licht!!! Like 2nd round kickers, 5ht round unemployed RB’s, and ANY player from UF!

    🙂

Go Bucs! Go Big! Go Barkley! Go Primetime!

  23. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

Forget his combine score! Just watch the tape.

Saquon is better than any back last year. Better than Hunt, Kamara, Fourmette, and Cook. That is why he will not be available to us.

Our offense was not our biggest problem so I dont think you trade up when we need defense defense defense.

  24. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

Barkley will certainly help our team score and get leads, but until our defense can hold a lead it really is moot.

  25. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Absolutely positively do not trade up…..that is for a team with one need…..we have multiple needs……no matter what happens, we will get a great player at 7. At worst we will probably have a choice between Nelson & Micah…..at best we may get lucky and either Chubb or Barkley may be there.

We must keep our draft picks and if the opportunity comes….trade down and receive extra picks.

  26. darin Says:

    Jolly.
Thats what Licht loves. Trading picks. Id prefer to trade back but then again I’d prefer an impact player above all. Licht has no patience on draft day. Wish he did. I think he reached every time he traded up for a guy. Marpet, beckwith, aguayo etc. Add in picks were lost and that equals depth. I’m not sold chubb is a future star. Gota take him if he is there tho. If not have some patience and take vea or nelson. Or trade down some and take best Dlineman. More picks would be ideal, not less. Team needs a bunch of linemen and cpl rbs. Then DBs if they get linemen. Free agency and trades could change alot tho. Licht has to have a great offseason or he is toast.

  27. BetterBuccinBelieveIt Says:

(In high school terms/age–just go with it)

Do you kiss the nice girl that always says “hi” when walking by in the hallway, maybe sits alone in the cafeteria, or do you constantly find ways to convince the girl that accidentally wears the top that’s too low-cut in the middle, the smoking-hot one, the one that says “I hate guys…I’m done with them”.

    Which one….

    And there’s your draft rationale.

    Go Bucs!

so I guess the ball just slipped out of brady’s hand in the 4th quarter…..or I guess matty ice just had wet hands when the ball slipped out of his hand…..the seahawks lost in their second SB appearance because of Malcolm butler…a defensive player(and bad play calling..lol)

sorry, give me a shut down defense and middle of the pact offense any day…..the defense would give the offense extra possessions…..

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!…..GO BUCS!!!!

  29. Guzziep Says:

The Bucs aren’t allowed to have nice things, no way Barkley will be a Buc

  30. derrickbrooksforGM Says:

Me Likey! Nice 1 – 2 punch with Barber.

  31. Blake_Bucsfan Says:

    @813bucboi

Dude, Each team in that Superbowl generated 500 yards and 38+ points. If anything you referencing that game actually bolstered Tmax’s rare salient point.

I think Barkely is going to be an absolute stud for whatever team that drafts him.

But personally I view Quenton Nelson to be even more of a stone cold killer prospect. Imagine this, say we are fortunate enough to take Nelson at 7, then trade back up into the first to get an also very talented hard nosed runner in Derrius Guice.

We would have the makings of a smash mouth, ball control offense, capable of wearing down opposing defenses with a powerful duo of backs in Guice and Barber. Which in turn would open up the Play Action/ Roll-out game that Jameis has continually excelled in.

    Dare to dream.

  32. Bucsfanman Says:

Balance! It’s all about balance. That’s why it looked so bad last year. We didn’t have any balance. A good offense will help cover for defensive weaknesses just as a good defense will make up for average offense. It’s not a complicated game.

  33. LakeLand Says:

A ball-controlling offense will benefit the defense and the team. Not a pass happy, vertical offense.

  34. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    THUNDER & LIGHTING
    • KALEN BALLAGE – ARIZONA STATE | 40 YARD DASH: 4.46
    • NYHEIM HINES – N.C. STATE | 40 YARD DASH: 4.38

  35. LakeLand Says:

Combine speed and game speed are two entirely different matters. The 40 time is not as important as the 10 yard and 20 yard splits.

  36. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    LakeLand

Exactly, I was actually expecting Saquon to run in the low 4.3’s.
Maybe he’ll improve his time at his Pro-Day.

  40. Defense Rules Says:

ndog, Lord C, 813bucboi, Bucsfanman … Nice job all of you defending building a BALANCED T-E-A-M but why bother? Tmaxcon & many others have their minds made up that a #32 defense is all we can expect so go all offense once again in the draft (well, at least with the picks that REALLY count). Throw a #4-7 bone to the defense and we’ll be fine. They’ve learned nothing apparently from the Saints of the Falcons histories with top-ranked offenses and poor defenses. Once they both started focusing on defense, funny how they did so much better.

  41. Pryda ...sec147 Says:

Look at all the average QBs that look great/elite with a great RB Imagine what Jameis could do with a great RB!!! So many misses the past 2-3 years on RBs let’s freaking get Saquon!!!!!! Please

  42. Duke Says:

    Defense rules,

Regarding the Saints and Falcons, true. But if that’s the model, then there’s nothing more to add than …..draft a RB and o line personnel. The model of the saints and birds was first high powered, high scoring offense. Then defense.
Are the Bucs high scoring? Nope! Offense rules

  43. SB Says:

I don’t know why so many are making predictions now. I won’t concern myself with the draft until After FA.

  44. tmaxcon Says:

    BigHogRacistScum

2 playoff games in 6 years is failure.. dungy the clown is a total embarrassment to the pro football hall of fame and men everywhere

  45. BuccaneEric75 Says:

The Colts desperately need Barkley or Chubb. Why would they trade back with us? If we had the 3rd pick and we traded back to 7 with Barkley and Chubb on the board, Licht would have a hit put out for him that night! That’s why the Colts won’t trade back to 7.

  46. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Blake, it’s not that you need defense to win the Super Bowl, you need defense to GET to the Super Bowl. Every good defense can give up a ton of points in one game. You need a good defense to make the playoffs and advance to the big game. A top 10 defense can give up a lot of points to a good offense in a particular game, but how many bad defenses have been able to even make the playoffs and go all the way?

  47. cmurda Says:

Saquon is a PERFECT PROSPECT and is going #1 overall imho … I LOVE Guice as our 2nd round pick though!

  49. BigHogHaynes Says:

  50. NFLNut Says:

If you’re American, the Don is your President … that’s fact.

However, right now in South Africa white farmers are being slaughtered and having their lands stolen from them with the blessing of their President and minister of Defense.

Why not have a citizen exchange with South Africa? The persecuted white South African farmers can come to the USA and get instant citizenship with an equal number of Donald-hating Americans going to SA and getting instant citizenship their …. my guess is not many Americans would actually take that offer and leave the Donald though!
