Koetter: Talks About Change In “Attack Mode”

September 7th, 2016

koetterleft3Think America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, was a bit of a gunslinger last year?

Wait till Sunday.

Dirk Koetter was asked a question today about the progression of Jameis and how that’s showing up versus last year at this time.

Koetter quickly noted that Jameis isn’t hurling mass quantities of interceptions in practice and, therefore, the Bucs can be “on the attack mode a little bit more.”

When new offensive coordinator/wide receivers coach Todd Monken took the job, he met with media and talked about slinging the ball downfield and quipped, “We don’t need anymore five-yard plays.” He added the Bucs’ offense needs to have a lot of fun, much like how Carolina has fun.

Joe asked Monken today about his initial mindset and whether it’s rubbed off on Koetter and will show up on the field.

Monken explained that the Bucs attacked plenty last year and it’s Koetter who is all about the explosive plays. If anything, Monken said, Koetter’s aggressiveness is rubbing off on him.

“Dirk likes to throw it deep. I didn’t need to influence that at all. I get a lot of that from him,” Monken said.

For opening day, Koetter has a very healthy stable of weapons, and a quarterback fully comfortable in the offense. The Falcons’, Sunday’s opponent, have major issues with their pass rush. Joe wouldn’t be surprised if the Bucs come out throwing, and deftly mixing in screen passes to Charles Sims.

Remember what Koetter said was the big offensive advice given to him by his close friend Marvin Lewis, the Bengals’ head coach.

Finally!!! I think we have a set of coaches that will put their foot on the throat of the opponent and not let up until the final whistle.

As a longtime Buc fan, I’m about sick of the “playing not to lose”.

At least when we go downfield if there is an interception…..it’s downfield. Go for it…..you will likely have the support of most fans.

  2. The Buc Realist Says:

    @Tampabaybucfan

welcome back, are you on probation or work release???

I for one am excited to see “attack mode”!!! only a couple of games did the passing to rushing ratio get out of hand. And considering how many times the team was down multiple scores, that was quite surprising!!!!! and the attack will be what ever is working, and not to keep someone’s defense fresh, or killing clock so teams have fewer possessions to make the defensive stats look better!!!!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!!

Well Said TBBF…. Playing scared always bites you on the arse… Score often and never let up.

  4. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Thanks Realist….

I think I will forever be on probation/parole…..my IP Address was still blocked the last time I checked so I am not fully back yet.

Thanks for the words of support….I’m sure it helped.

It doesn’t take long to find out how much you miss JBF….

  5. Tampabaybucfan Says:

We have mad a habit over the years of losing most close games…..I, for one would rather lose 35-34 than to go down 10-9……but I’d really rather not lose at all.

  6. Dreambig Says:

Welcome back TBBF! The Joes were way over the top harsh on you. Here’s to having your parole lifted!

On another note, just rewatched the 1st half of the Cleaveland game just for fun. On the bucs last 2nd quarter TD, Winston and Evans scored went 85 yards in just 3 plays! I LOVE attack mode!

  7. DB55 Says:

I knew TBBF wasn’t banned it was someone with a scrnname like TampaBucFan or something. U can’t ban TBBF bc Pablo. Nuff said….

Question: the Bucs’ offense needs to have a lot of fun, much like how Carolina has fun.
    —————-
IF that happens is the TB media going to critics him for lack of professionalism? I guess as long as he win that’s all that matters huh?

Better question (although it would never happen) if GMC sits during the anthem will the TB media completely lose their ship? I bet if GMC does that it will be okay. Alright carry on nothing to see here….

  8. DB55 Says:

    I stand corrected.

  9. The Buc Realist Says:

I was kinda of hoping for “Tampabaybucfan 2.2” and then a shawshank quote

“Rehabilitated? I know what you think it means, sonny. To me, it’s just a made up word. A politician’s word, so young fellas like yourself can wear a suit and a tie, and have a job. What do you really want to know? Am I sorry for what I did?”

  10. feelthepewterpower Says:

the key is to attack an opponents weakness..not just throw for the sake of opening it up and having fun. Belichick is the master of “attacking” a defense. Doesn’t care if he has to run it 50 times, or pass it 50 times short…or run and throw the ball deep.

  11. Buccaneers Says:

Attack Mode and all this scheme changing means of very little in regards to winning. The NFL is all about making plays. It doesn’t matter which scheme you’re making them under. What matters is that you don’t commit horrible penalties to take them away or drop a pass or kick return or miss a field goal and other easy plays. The players on this team have a lot to prove on the field. In my opinion it’s a mentality thing not a play calling deal.

  12. Kobe Faker Says:

    Go no huddle

They won’t be able to design blitzes

Don’t have to be break neck speed but don’t huddle and call plays at the line

It does not have to be all quick routes. We can go deep but do not let the defense huddle

  13. tmaxcon Says:

    Buccaneers

a great well planned scheme is what you need to put the players in a position to make plays. i agree with but don’t discount a well planned creative scheme.

  14. BucInJax Says:

    Welcome back TBBF. (Pablo too.)

  15. Buc1987 Says:

I was working as TBBF’s attorney. Seeing how Jameis doesn’t need me anymore on JBF.

  16. Buccaneers Says:

Yeah well if you got players that consistently fail on the field there is no sceme that’s ever been created that will work out in a winning way.

  17. Kris Says:

It wasn’t long ago that the Falcons put 54 points on Tampa. On the sidelines, there was Koetter, laser focused with no thoughts of holding back. Then I thought to myself: Why don’t we have a coach like that? Lovie hired him next offseason and the rest is history. It’s a new day in this Buc life.

    AIR KOETTER 2016!!

  18. Defense Rules Says:

This coaching staff really has me excited this year. I agree with feelthepewterpower that the key is to ‘attack’ a defense, and then attack some more. Bucs offense has an excellent arsenal of weapons, obviously starting with Jameis but with lots of other strengths. Convinced that Coach K will mix it up (run vs pass) a whole bunch this year depending on what the other team gives him. Smitty’s defense could also turn out to be one of our best weapons … get off the field quickly then give the ball back to the offense and let Jameis & company run up the time-of-possession and score. Can’t wait to see this team in action against the Falcons.

  19. Buccaneers Says:

Give me a team that has a confident mentality and a physically imposing Style and I don’t care which scheme they are running. They will win more games than they lose.

  20. Buccaneers Says:

The players that have me scared are our possession receivers……. Humphries and Brate. From what I saw they were horrible during the preseason games. Maybe some of your other fans can further educate me because I’ll admit I didn’t see every snap. But what I did see from them too it was hot garbage

  21. Stpetebucsfan Says:

    Kobe

What happened to you dude. An honest straight up post?
BTW I happen to agree. I’d like to come out up tempo as well. Not just because of what it will do to Atlanta’s defense I feel #3 does better in the hurry up so if we get him rolling early maybe we can prevent the slow start.

  22. Stpetebucsfan Says:

    Buccanneer

Agree that Brate had a dismal pre season but Humphries has looked sharp this year to me. He flashed enough during the pre season to satisfy me.

As for Brate…we have to hope his performance last year was more indicative of the way he’s going to play this year. In addition he’s one of five TE’s…and certainly the major responsibility rests with ASJ. Brandon Myers is also a decent receiving TE.

  23. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Here’s a thought:

We are playing SF this year……Maybe, just maybe, GMC can help Kaepernick up during the National Anthem.

  24. Kobe Faker Says:

Agreed hurry up Off will create holes and separation

Koetter was a good soldier and said he had all control of the off and not lovie…bs

2016 bucs will be koetter ATL off

  25. Buccaneers Says:

Well I saw Humphries drop a pass. In the first preseason game he went out for a third-down pass and didn’t get the three needed and never reach the sticks. He just has not been getting it done as preseason from what I’ve seen. As I said I haven’t seen every snap so maybe I missed some of the good stuff that may change my mind. But for a guy like him he needs to make close to 95% of his plays because he is asked to run short easy patterns. We are not asking him to do anything extreme won’t catch the balls and make first downs when he gets the shot.

  26. Tampabaybucfan Says:

My sincere apology to Joe. (not sucking up)

Spending almost 40 years in the media, I have become cynical about the many who would sacrifice their first born to get a larger audience. Obviously, Joe doesn’t need to do that. His niche product is good enough.
My choice of words was poor and I didn’t intend to question his integrity.

Now as for Joe’s opinion on Dominick…..well, I have an army of JBF posters who agree with Ira that it is “sickening”…

  27. Dave Pear Says:

    TBBF still poking the bear.

  28. Dave Pear Says:

TBBF still has his ankle bracelet on and staying out past his curfew.

  29. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Better than poking the Pear!!!

  30. Dave Pear Says:

    Nice!

  31. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Speaking for Pablo

“Pablo had to resist when they tried to put an ankle bracelet on Pablo’s elongated arc. Pablo absolutely hated being in the cooler with TBBF. The chain smoking of Padrons and knocking down multiple single malts. TBBF even wanted a private table dance…..Pablo said, no gracias.”

  32. Buc1987 Says:

I know who you were but won’t divulge.

  41. SB with Jameis Says:

I am just glad to see you back friend! I it different coming back from the dead isn’t it!

  42. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Yes….you build a camaraderie with other posters and its frustrating not to be able to communicate with them….even if temporarily. I will take care to protect myself from banishment as best I can….but, being myself….it’s not easy.

  43. Kevin Says:

Please Lord….please let this be the end. Im tired of the pain, the agony of watching a hopeless, pathetic reenactment of the weeks practice drills on gameday. The end of knowing we’ve lost before the damn coin.toss. Please let Jamies and Evans rip the souls out of theyre defense, and Kwon pickpocket Juilio!!!!!GO BUCS!!!

  44. RustyRhinos Says:

Hey now, Three and out is just that three downs and you didn’t get the yards to continue that drive so you punt. It makes no difference if it is a slow paced running offense or the “hurry up” pass happy offense. Make the plays that are there to make! Yes sometimes the play to make is to throw it out of bounds and come back and try it again. Keep on keeping on, up and down the field for four quarters! Bring the ” take no BS” attitude on every play on both sides of the ball. We can and we will overcome anything in our path.
    Go Bucs!

TampaBayBucFan Not sure why you are not on the blog I must have missed something. I’d hate to lose yourself and StPeteBucFan on this blog and a few others, yours are some of the best posts that I always read, except for the Pablo thing, the original Pablo was tolerable at best and sometimes funny. You are way beyond that.

I’ve been on this blog a long time I have seen lots and lots of posters come and go, who raise all kinds of ruckus for and against our team. I miss some of them, I also miss how some of our posters have changed how and what they write about. I understand we all grow and change in our personal life, I have in my own life. For the better I think.

Ready for Sunday, section 307 will be riled up and ready to yell and cheer our team to victory! Go BUCS!

  45. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    I’m still laughing at Koetter#rotate

  46. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    RustyRhinos

Thanks…..but, not to fear….I’m back. I, too enjoy St Pete…..Sorry you don’t enjoy the Pablo humor…..many do…..but each to his own….that’s certainly understandable.
I’m glad you like my posts on the Bucs subjects….I try to present a positive perspective when I can and I must say it’s been difficult with the teams we have fielded lately.
It would be difficult for me to mature much more than I am…but we could all stand to learn no matter what our age.

  47. unbelievable Says:

    Welcome back TBBF and Pablo!

JBF just wan’t the same without mentions of an elongated arc!

  48. SOEbuc Says:

Buccaneers did you miss game 3 when Humphries had two very nice catches over the middle for first downs and a punt return for a touchdown?

  49. Alan Says:

    @Joe,

Will you be posting the live times and feeds for commish podcast?
Also will you be joining often?

  50. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

Well some names might have all changed since you posted last,

  55. SB with Jameis Says:

OH, and I don’t get why Peyton Barber isn’t re-signed yet.

  56. Alabamabucsman Says:

I’ve read and read jbf for long time now and wanted to say that this years excitement feels a little bit different that previous years am still worried about it being another hype job like last time year but they no that we may be on a possible team we’ve never seen or had before. Thank you for your time

  57. LargoBuc Says:

Im so stoked to see Jameis lead this offense in four days! Keep in mind though, there is no way they can stop our running game for four quarters either! Falcons defense dosen’t scare me in the least! Seriously, if we can blanket Julio, they have ZERO to fall back on!

  58. Pickgrin Says:

Thanks BucGa.. Er SB with Jameis.

Joe – this comments section would be vastly improved and a lot more fun if you added a thumbs up/thumbs down feature on each post. And for Gods sake men – where is the “Edit” button?? This site desperately needs an ‘edit’ button for one’s own posts. Put the new guy on it. I’m sure Ira knows all about website technology – LOL.

  59. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Welcome back TBBF, Pablo and the famous “elongated arc” that some suffer from!😛

  62. SB with Jameis Says:

Best ‘non nightmares’ to you Eric and hopefully Superbowl Dreams.

  63. martinii Says:

Like many others, welcome back TBBF. I visit this site daily and enjoy the articles, news, and most of the commentary. There are only a few posters I consistently seek out and you are one. Each of us have our own mindset and yours usually runs fairly close to mine. As to the topic of explosive plays, I am looking forward to more attack mode this season simply because I feel Jameis has a season under his belt and we have an arsenal of offensive weapons. Our improved defense should keep our offense on the field longer. Whether this translates into more wins is yet to be determined, but it should be more fun to watch.

  64. Scott Ledger Says:

OK, I have to admit it … This article gave me a chubby. #attack
