Morning Cup Of Joe

November 2nd, 2026

Welcome to your Morning Cup of Joe, an eye-opener to help Joe’s readers ease into their busy workday with a few football links, wacky news and a pleasant distraction.

Distraction of the Day

NC State possibly hiring Philip Rivers as its next head coach (clearly in an effort to bring his high school star quarterback son with him to Raleigh). Rivers has zero college coaching experience, so that just seems wild to Joe. Have NC State folks not heard of Trent Dilfer? Go do what Indiana and UCLA did and hire a stop-shelf I-AA coach. (What is it called, “FCS?”) [PFT]

Josh Jacobs said he was not pantomiming being pinched in his touchdown celebration last week in a win over the Stinking Panthers. Instead, it was a tribute, he said, to a Gospel song about breaking the chains. Um, OK? [CBS]

Five under-the-radar receivers Rams should try to swing a trade for. [Yahoo!]

Trade grades from last week’s moves. [NFL]

How two former roommates hatched the Jeffery Simmons trade. [SI]

The latest drama between Joe Buck and Troy Aikman. If any of this is true, neither one looks like a sympathetic figure. Unfortunately, this is more common than not in that industry. Joe hates to paint with a broad brush, but from Joe’s dealings with high-end network suits and talking heads, this is not an outlier. The self-important slobs like Chris Berman far outnumber the true class acts like Dick Vitale or Chris Myers or Charles Davis or Al Michaels or Chris Russo or Ian Eagle. (Aside: The old-time radio dudes Joe dealt with were really, really cool guys like Vin Scully, Harry Kalas, Harry Caray, Jack Buck and, of course, Gene Deckerhoff.) [The Athletic]

Big Cat not a fan of Cardinals caudillo Michael Bidwill. [Awful Announcing]

TV ratings for NFL international games are up big. TV ratings for those rotten pregame shows are down. [Front Office Sports]

There is no such thing as love. Or, no wonder North Carolina is playing decent football. [TMZ]

Is the SEC working against LSU? [Sport and State]

Wild: Illinois playoff game has a total of 172 points scored and it was a four-point game. It lasted so long the game ran out of daylight and had to be moved to a different stadium mid-game that had lights. [WGN]

Jarring audio/video coming out of West Palm yesterday. [X]

This is flat out ornery. [TikTok]
