Rondé Barber Says “Mood Is Not Great” At Bucs Headquarters

Buccaneers legend Rondé Barber works weekly inside the walls of One Buc Palace as part of his duties on the official team website.
So Barber was asked on his latest WFLA streaming show to share the mood at team headquarters in the hours since the Bucs’ miserable loss to the bumbling Browns.
Barber doesn’t like the vibe.
“Look, the mood is not great,” Barber said. ” There’s too many mistakes. There’s a lack of urgency, if you will, in my mind when I look at them going onto the field. There’s got to be a little bit of a sense of a defining characteristic of your team through Week 2. I don’t know what that is. It’s mistakes. It’s busts. It’s lack of execution.”
Timeout. Todd Bowles said additions like A’Shawn Robinson and Rakeem “Nacho” Nuñez-Roches delivered a new attitude. And now Barber doesn’t like the urgency when players are taking the field?
Barber went to further describe how the Bucs haven’t looked ready for the season.
“Week 2 can’t be the fifth preseason game,” Barber continued.
“At some point you have to start hitting your stride. And it doesn’t feel like they’re in their stride right now on either side of the ball.”
“I feel like for much of the secondary, especially the coverage unit, they’re so focused on what they’re trying to do, that they don’t know how to do it now.”
Barber seems baffled as to why veteran newcomer linebacker Alex Anzalone has become the kind of player he wasn’t in Detroit last season, missing tackles and struggling in coverage.
“There’s some dynamic going on, whether it’s not understanding what his role is in the defense, not understanding angles, maybe not having enough tackles in the preseason, I don’t know what it is,” Barber said. ” … Something is hamstringing this defense in critical moments.”
An ardent Bucs optimist most of the time, Barber has stopped throwing around lollipops and candy corn.

no worries – the Vikes and Packers are favored over the Bucs so the real urgency won’t manifest until after the Dallas game – the Bucs can start 0-5 and then do something literally unprecedented : make the playoffs after a 0-5 start – the Bucs can giddyap at home and beat up Aaron Rodgers and the Steelers then on to glory !!

It’s really pretty simple
Football starts with leadership. You have to have a HC that is a leader.. Then it’s about team leaders. Those should be Baker, AW Jr, Vita, Wirfs, Anzalone. None are leading by example or otherwise.
Then you have to have a QB that can overcome things. Baker needs everything around him to be high level to be great. When the oline is average, the WRs are just OK and the play calling is suspect, Baker becomes below average.
Right now, this team lacks leadership and a top flight QB.
Bowles ain’t it and Baker is trending in the wrong direction.
Sunday is really a turning point for them to right the ship or sink it. We shall see

The defense lost its swagger when they blew the coverage against the Rams in the NFCCG. It’s been in a downhill spiral since then.
Someone else on here recently mentioned that when Licht is canned, the Bucs should turn to Ronde Barber as GM and at this point, maybe that’s not as far fetched an idea as I thought. He’s already in the building.

It’s speculation, but the players may be taking the chance on their own futures to turn their backs on Bowles and see him get his walking papers. The level of play they are in now is like the Raiders and Browns of years past, bilge water + a hot mess.

Todd Bowles is the reason. He doesn’t know how to coach. All great coaches are coaching, communicating, shouting, yelling, doing something on the sidelines when things aren’t going well. This Kit Kat eating coach has his arms crossed and observing like that’s going to change anything. Not sure what the glazers like about that.

I think Barber knows what is an underlying issue. He has said several times before that the Bucs D of old played a fairly simple scheme, where they didn’t have to think too much, just react and play ball. When he says everyone is thinking, trying not to mess up, it seems he is suggesting the scheme is too complex, without calling out Todd directly.

I would LOVE for them to have someone else call the defense and see if that helps. I think our HC/DC isn’t capable of handling both duties. Time has shown that already.
The Captains that were picked are all quiet guys with the exception of Baker who at the moment needs someone to get on his A$$ and get him straightened out. There seems to be no one on the team that’s gonna get on folks for slacking or missing assignments. Granted this could all be speculation BUT that’s my theory.

2) sometime before the bye it becomes clear that the Bucs are not a playoff team 3) crucial players such as Baker, Godwin, Bain, Trotter, Parrish go on IR or miss substantial time 4) Bowles and Licht point to injuries as the reason for the Bucs lack of success 5) Bowles Licht and Arians get together and snicker over their bourbon about how they snowed the fans and the Glazers into keeping them around another year 5) rinse and repeat next year

I think the season is gonna come down to the offensive line. I don’t thinknits true that Baker needs “everything perfect” to play well, but he may beed really good pass protection. He had an elite OL theough most of college, when he also performed at an elite level. And he had a top OL in 2024, when he also performed at a high level.
I’m not saying the Bucs OL is “to blame” for anything, nor that Baker “should” (or “shouldn’t”) need a really strong OL. If he does, he does.

now he’s adjusting to a 3-4 and adjusting very poorly…
or richly, if looking at his pay stubs…

Anyone who thinks Baker is guaranteed to be here through his contract needs to look at the Broncos/Wilson situation. Yes it would be expensive but manageable if you have QB on a rookie contract.

I’ve been a big JL supporter he built the team that got us our second Super Bowl but keeping Bowles has been the worst decision I’ve seen in a long time if not the worst. Bowles has show us absolutely nothing in his entire career as a HC that he can be anything but average. We are wasting a very good roster on this guy. We are at least a 10 win divisional winning team on paper and he’s wasting it.

I know this isn’t Joes fault, but year after year since Bowles has taken over the stories are always trying to figure out what’s going on in Tampa. The Joe’s are just writing what interests them and what the Bucs leave on the field, but the answer to them all is the same thing….. Bowles is a horrible head coach. I get he’s good people and is probably really good, like Dungy, building good men out of the young guys, but…… nothing ever gets fixed and it either stays the same or gets worse. The last podcast Ira was talking about tackling and said he’s gonna ask Bowles about it again, and hopes to get a better answer or changes??? When has any of it got any better since Bowles has been the HC??? I feel bad for the Joe’s and Ira having to ask the same questions and write the same stories over and over because they want to have hope just like the rest of us fans. No matter what Bowles says or does the same problems last week are the same problems this team has had since day 1 of Bowles taking over and the Glazers should have seen this years ago and made the change!!! Nothing ever changes and I’m sure will make the walking disaster, the brain dead and the guy who never studies film so they made a clause in his contract Kyler Murray look like he’s turned the corner on his career and a hall of famer this week after playing a Bowles coached team!!! It’s called a “cliff” for a reason. I had hoped for the best, but I couldn’t understand how or even WHY that everyone else seemed to be drinking the kool-aid, and wanted to buy into this CRAP about an AGING LB with long hair, as being this savior. But, that’s the shape that LICKT put this team in HIMSELF, at the LB position. Where it was about the ONLY thing left at that point, that HE could do. Was to go out and have to ‘sign’ a guy who was let go by Detroit (for a reason), while already on his last legs, and with very little left in the tank. It should’ve been a DEPTH PIECE… Instead, it was a DESPERATION PIECE. And, this has been the typical status quo, continuously, time after time again, for YEARS NOW.
Then, you see COEN and Jacksonville (and other teams and GM’s) just “churning-out” YOUNG (and explosive) TALENT. By the time, this 2027-Draft is completed, COEN and JAX will have “DRAFTED” 30-PLAYERS since he’s been there. That is just SO HUGE!!!! And, by the time the 2028-Draft rolls around, I’m sure they will have ANOTHER 8-11 MORE ‘PICKS’ by then, by the time they’ve finished-up making their moves. We have a LAZY GM and a STAGNANT ROSTER, that lacks not only “ELITE-level” TALENT, but also has very little “HIGH-end” TALENT to speak of… ZERO “ELITE,” other than Wirfs. And, you guessed-it… YES, he is starting to show some “wear and tear” now, AND his age. If they don’t start ‘winning’ SOON… And, IF they can get a HAUL of 2027 and 2028-PICKS… They BETTER do it while they still CAN, and before it is TOO LATE.
This roster needs CHURNING and an ‘aggressive’ modern-day GM who can recognize and evaluate talent, AND knows what the HELL he is doing. 93-106. 467. 13-YEARS. So, STOP with the whole ‘Stockholm Syndrome” thing! Because, THIS IS HORRIBLE. It says ALL you need to know. “LOADED” Rosters do NOT have .467 WIN%’s.. They. Just. DON’T. It should not be. Stupid penalties, and a lot of holding by the O line setting drives back.
Baker fumbling away the first game and having three occasions for a deep ball and overthrowing all of them, and then overthrowing the game-winning touchdown.
The defense has been pretty decent. No pressure the first game but impressed with the starting DBs. Two new linebackers are good and should only get better. But they better learn to cover a TE
The biggest reason everyone should be upset is because they made the decision to keep Todd Bowles as head coach and get rid of all the other coaches. He should’ve went with them.

I did too. But, for some reason, somehow, ‘THEY” (the players and Cash) DID NOT And, they were the ONLY ONE’s who mattered. They’ve all been saying since “Spring Training,” that it just felt ‘different’ while they were there. Basically immediately, as soon as they all got there. They are THE literal ‘definition’ of the word TEAM. It’s truly amazing what they did. Unbelievable.

The players are overthinking while others are compensating. Guys are anticipating breakdowns before they occur which then leads to more breakdowns. That tells me the players simply don’t trust the scheme and/or their teammates.
The system is built for a team with a consistent offense that puts up points.

The problem is we have substantially bad coaching!!
A horrendous defensive scheme that doesn’t fit the strengths of its players.
A fidgety QB that just got life-changing $$ and now he doesn’t want to go thru his reads when a play is called.
These are the issues…
The players will all mentally check out from listening to Bowles by week 5 (shirt week at Dallas).

When we sign someone from another team, one of the things I like to do is see if the fans of that team are throwing a fit or not. And Detroit fans were NOT throwing a fit — half of them were celebrating that he was leaving, saying he was a step slow in coverage and MISSING TACKLES.
I will say I don’t think Analzone looks slow, his speed is there, the issue is he seemingly has no idea what he’s doing. He’s not just missing huge tackles, he’s not just missing tackles so badly he’s knocking his teammates down when they’re trying to make tackles, he’s also seemingly not sure what he’s doing in zone coverage. In man coverage he actually seems OK, but of course if someone actually catches the ball – he’s incapable of bringing them down.
BTW, the other half of Detroit fans weren’t so much sad to see him go as much as they just sort of liked him as a person, but didn’t really want to see him on the field anymore. I really didn’t see fans, any fans, talking about how Detroit was really going to miss him on the field, and we see why.
Also, I’ll note the “professionals” – like local beat reporters, NFL reporters, they mostly claimed he was good, solid tackling and good in coverage. This is a rar case where the team fans – who actually watch the games and not just a few highlights – got it right.

When a coach knows how to maximize player traits, mid-round picks and castoffs look like Pro Bowlers. When a coach forces round pegs into square holes, blue-chip talent stalls out completely.
1. Belichick Squeezed Elite Production from Less Pedigreed Talent
The Patriots dynasty wasn’t built on 1st-round defense—it was built on taking non-elite athletes and giving them hyper-specific, discipline-based assignments:
*Rob Ninkovich (5th Round, Cut Twice):** A 250 lb defensive end who couldn’t stick on a roster until Belichick asked him to do two things: set a hard edge and drop into specific zone lanes. He ended up posting 46.0 sacks in New England.
*Kyle Van Noy (2nd Round Bust in Detroit):** Looked completely unplayable with the Lions. Belichick traded a 6th-rounder for him, put him in clean blitzing angles and SAM linebacker roles, and turned him into a two-time Super Bowl champion.
*Trey Flowers (4th Round):** A 4th-round pick who dominated as a technique-heavy interior/edge hybrid in New England’s front, signed a massive $90M deal with Detroit, and immediately cratered without that specific coaching scheme.
2. The Bucs Fallacy: Fitting Hand-in-the-Dirt DEs into 3-4 OLBs
The misuse of Tampa Bay’s edge rushers is textbook **square-peg-in-a-round-hole** coaching:
*Rueben Bain Jr. (1st Round, Pick 15 – 2026):** At Miami, Bain was a monster playing **4-3 defensive end** with his hand in the dirt—a leverage-based power-rusher who used raw bull-rushes and inside moves against guards and tackles. Bowles has forced him into standing up as a 3-4 OLB, where he has to process space, dropped coverage assignments, and wide edge-setting. The result? He’s gone completely non-existent to start his career (1 tackle through 76 snaps).
*YaYa Diaby (3rd Round):** Diaby is built like a freight train (6’3″, 263 lbs) who broke out with 7.5 sacks as a rookie simply by exploding upfield off the snap. Instead of letting him pin his ears back in a true four-man front, Bowles drops him into coverage or asks him to react to lateral, read-option schemes from a standing 2-point stance.
There’s way WAY MORE EXAMPLES but I don’t have time for all that lol…
The Reality
Great coaches design systems that mask flaws and unleash natural strengths. Bad schemes force power players with their “hands in the dirt” to stand up, read space, and play out of position—making 1st-round talents look like busts while lesser-talented, scheme-fit guys elsewhere look like All-Pros.

For the dullards who just spam FIRE BOWLES on every post for years on in… what exactly is he supposed to be doing different right now?
On offense, Baker has had guys wide open all over the place and just flat out keeps missing them. The coaches put Baker in a perfect situation to win the game, an easy pass to a wide open WR in the end zone, and Baker makes another bad throw to lose the game. What exactly are the coaches supposed to do there.
The on the other side of the ball, you got Analzone who is the Baker Mayfield of the defense, who is blowing coverages and missing tackles at an astounding rate. The coaches, again, have had him in the correct place to make plays, and he just keeps missing guys, even whipping out his fellow teammates like on the long Boston TD where Analzone literally not only missed the tackle, but managed to take out Winfield and Smith as well on the play.
Also, the defense is 13th in yards, 4th in rushing defense, and 21st in passing defense – and that’s with repeated turnovers by the offense which has kept the defense on the field. In week one, the defense gave up 16 points when the Bengals got the ball in their own territory and the defense scored 7 points – so that’s 9 net points they gave up, and the one TD they gave up was still after a turnover. Vs the Browns, the defense gave up 23 points, but 3 of those were off another Baker turnover, so that’s 20 points. If you just look at points given up when the offense doesn’t turn the ball over, it’s 29 points in two games, or 14.5 points a game, which would have – by far – lead the NFL in points against last year.
The defense isn’t the issue. Coaching, right now, isn’t the issue. The issue is all about ONE player, Baker Mayfield – and to a lesser extent Analzone. But just replace Baker with a very low ranked middling average QB and the Bucs are 2-0 right now. In fact in that situation the Bucs are 7-0 in their last 7 if they just got a normal low-end middling QB performance. Baker is, all by himself, not giving the team a chance to win – and somehow got rewarded for that performance by becoming the highest paid player in team history, and the 3rd highest paid player in the NFL, and a $65M cap hit for the next 3 years.

Seriously, I really don’t know WHAT you all ‘think’ you’re seeing!? I mean, it’s LAUGHABLE. It’s a “BOTTOM-5” ROSTER in the NFC. At BEST. It could actually be VERY GENEROUS. Since, it’s NOT much better than that when considering the entire LEAGUE, and both conferences. “TALENTED” ROSTERS do not go 3-13 in 13-games. PERIOD. End of Story. I just can’t see HOW anyone who actually WATCHES a lot of “FOOTBALL,” can look at THIS ROSTER and say that it is a GREAT Roster. It’s mind-boggling, because I don’t know WTF you’re actually seeing here!? It’s like, did you JUST NOW start watching FOOTBALL, or what!? Are you just NOT capable of removing your ‘emotions’ or is it just EGO!? Cause, it’s NOT THERE.

I mean, there aren’t hardly any players on this roster at ALL, who are even ranked as being “Top-15” players in the League, at their respective positions (much less Top 5-10ish). Maybe, NO ONE. Though, I might give it to Tykee. It’s NOT a roster stocked full of “ALL-PRO” selections scattered throughout it, either. But, how bout NFL TOP-100’s… NOT MANY. Definitely, not any whom were ‘highly’ rated. Except for WHO… WIRFS!? And, it’s WHY most preseason rankings had them ranked around that #22-RANGE. Because, it’s a WEAK ROSTER. 22 is basically BOTTOM-10 in the whole LEAGUE. Yeah, it was THE ‘highest’ ranked NFC SOUTH Team… But, THAT doesn’t make THEM GREAT THO, by no means. Actually, farrrrr from it.

OK, Rod. The fate of all rides solely on Baker…in fact, you could even say that Baker +is+ the game. Maybe one of the networks could just shoot the entire thing as a Baker close-up, so we’re not distracted by irrelevancies like the OL, receivers, defense, the opposing team, etc.

And, that is also WHY “I” said for all off-season long, that THIS “Bucs Team” has ZERO chance whatsoever. And, that they BETTER NOT extend Baker. AND, that we BETTER move every ‘available’ asset with value, at this season’s trade-deadline, and offseason.

Its starting to feel like agents have the Bucs pegged as to where to go with their last legs defensive players looking for one last pay day and some sun. We are perpetually desperate to fill holes we can’t draft and its pretty obvious. Especially since the historically brutal training camp is patty cake now there is little tradeoff (other than the ire of a fanbase they have no real connection with).

I just read an article which suggested that Mike Tomlin might be available as the next HC for the Bucs. Interestingly, he started his career as a defensive backs coach under Jon Gruden. Wouldn’t it be nice if the circle was complete and Tomlin headed the Bucs for the 2027 season. One can wish and dream. Bowles is a dead man walking. Lichtenstein needs to begin working with the new coach on our next franchise QB in the college draft We need a total team rebuild. Go Bucs. Go Canes. Cheers.
