A former NFL general manager said the Bucs don’t have one major problem. They have two. And both are on offense.
And former Titans general manager Ran Carthon thinks those problems are Baker Mayfield and Mike Evans.
On Mayfield, Carthon doesn’t believe he can carry a team. But he does believe a star receiver can carry Mayfield. Unfortunately, Carthon said, that star no longer wears a Bucs uniform and instead wears red and gold of the 49ers.
“I don’t know that they have enough on the offensive side of the football” to turn the season around, Carthon said on CBS Sports HQ Monday. The Bucs “miss Mike Evans.”
Carthon believes Evans was Mayfield’s get-out-of-jail-free card. He drew coverage from defenders that helped the rest of the Bucs receivers, and he was a safety blanket for Mayfield.
Without Evans, Carthon said, Mayfield appears lost and the Bucs receivers are not used to heavy coverage that used to go to Evans.
“All I know, Week 1 against the Rams, all of [Evans’] catches were for first downs to extend drives,” Carthon said. “Baker Mayfield needs weapons around him to be successful, right? He’s not a put-it-on-my-shoulders-and-I’ll-lead-you-no matter-who’s-out-there-on-the-field-with-me [guy].
“And right now, I don’t know who their weapons are. Who are [Mayfield’s] go-to [targets]? Because at some point, we know what Emeka Egbuka is, or what he can be. But did Emeka benefit from playing opposite of Mike Evans last year? Where Mike Evans got the double coverage and he was able to win one on one on the backside?
“So now, if [Egbuka is] the focal point, and he’s getting the bracketing, then who on the other side is going to be able to win in those one-on-one moments? I don’t know that we have anybody over there that can do that?”
Carthon’s premise sounds good but Joe is pretty sure he’s forgetting a couple of things.
First, perhaps Carthon is unaware that Chris Godwin is now healthy. The fact he didn’t know who plays opposite of Egbuka isn’t very flattering. Joe hopes Carthon only had a senior moment.
And what happened in Seattle last year when Mike Evans was on injured reserve? Mayfield and Egbuka lit it up and the Bucs beat the eventual Super Bowl champions.
Also remember that Godwin was hobbled in that game so Egbuka didn’t get any help whatsoever.
But yeah, the way the Bucs are not targeting Godwin, Joe can sort of sympathize with Carthon thanks to a couple of questionable gameplans the first two weeks; it may be easy to forget Godwin is still on the roster.

Go look at every game the last 2 seasons after Evansā injuries.
Cade is the substitute big body for Baker when Mike hasnāt been available. Instead of using the Seattle game for an example for everytime Mike was unavailable in 2024 or 2025, just look at how this offense functions. Whoās targeted, how deep they are. When you say this offense looks the same as last year, look at the stretch of game in ā24 after both Mike & Chris went down. Look at the tape and the numbers.
Mikesā still manipulating coverage when heās in the game, as of now. Most DCs in this league are still going to account for him, thus it creates space and makes the other eligible receivers jobs less difficult if not easier.
Evans was the safety valve, big difference between him pickin up 12 on a vertical crosser opposed to running a screen with Cade or spamming dumpoffs designed or improve to Bucky 2-3 yards in the backfield. The former adds up quicker, the latter is how you go into the first half with 45 yards passing going 9-15
Buc fans just donāt want to admit it, Mikeās gone letās get over him, but the problem is this team isnāt over him and weāre seeing that in how we are functioning offensively. Weāre asking Robinson to be Liam Coen, when Liam Coen had the benefit of scheming with Evans. Yāall confuse Baker playing the most important position, with him being the best player on the field for us and that hasnāt ever been true.
Go back and watch the Lions game from last year, donāt even have to watch the entire game just after Evans left the game. Thatās what weāve looked like the last 2 weeks in a āwell this aināt rightā type of way.

Evans left the game against the Dolphins with three catches. He’s no longer the dominate WR he used to be. Yes, the Bucs no longer have a Chase, Lamb, St Brown, Jefferson type receiver. Evans no longer falls into that category no matter who he’s playing for. ZERO research done by Carthon!

I donāt think it has anything to do with Evans or really talent. This team had less talent at the beginning of last season when the injuries were piling on and still won games. This has more to do with coaching. They are never prepared and lack discipline. I mean they could barely get plays off during the Bengals game. I also think the players have checked out. They donāt believe in Bowles and why should they us fans donāt. Now itās excuses from my headset didnāt work in week 1 to the balls weāre sweaty and week 2. This team needs to grow a pair. They are a bunch of soft diva babies that are overpaid. They need a real head coach to set them right.

So far, the offensive line and Mayfield are the anchors to the offense. Robinson is more like the sandbar.
I’ll disagree a little with Carthon as well but from another angle. There are same number of guys in coverage whether Evans is in Tampa or in San Francisco. Someone is open. For example, on that stupid near-pick that Baker tried to force to Tez we had Gainwell running WIDE OPEN on the right. Why couldn’t Mayfield just turn his head a little?

This is the Glazersā lost season for keeping Todd. And maybe a new, good head coach, would have said, āwait guys! Donāt pay Baker and Vea until we see how they play. Maybe the Bucs should treat training camp and preseason seriously in the future, and use that time to work on timing and how to find receivers when a defense that can cover people is in the field. I agree with all 3 of Carthon’s statements above. Mayfield NEEDS a very strong supporting TEAM to be successful. He’s not the QB who can consistently put the team on his back & lead it to victory. A top OLine is especially important to Baker; without that, he’s getting ready to scramble from the moment he takes the snap.
In a mere 2 games, Baker has fumbled 3 times (with 1 resulting in a TD), been intercepted once, and been sacked 7 times. He’s also rushed 9 times out of our total 114 plays, meaning that he’s taking a beating. Thatās not a prescription for success.
But I think many are blaming the wrong folks for Baker’s problems. Zac Robinson seemed to have a decent game-plan for moving the ball against both Cincinnati & Cleveland. In those 2 games, the Bucs have had 20 drives total. Our offense has scored on 9 drives (45%), and that’s actually quite good. Problem is: Bucs’ offense has scored 6 FGs but only 3 TDs. Combine that with making 4 fumbles & 1 INT and you have the perfect prescription for losing. Our Red Zone TD Percentage is only 37.5% (3-out-of-8), giving us a #25 ranking in the NFL.
The opportunities have been there, but our offense clearly hasn’t capitalized on them. In 20 drives, they’ve scored on 9 drives (mostly FGs), fumbled (or thrown) it away on 5 drives, punted 4 times, and ran out of downs or time on 2 drives. To make matters worse, the offense (mostly because of the turnovers) has been giving opponents some relatively short fields to work with. And that hasn’t exactly done the Bucs’ defense any favors (and they need all the favors they can get).
If you go back and relook at all the Bucs’ 3rd downs, you’ll see a lot of 3rd-and-longs on the unsuccessful ones (no big surprise there). You’ll also see Baker getting sacked FOUR times on 3rd down 9and yes, fumbling twice on those). We’ve had 14 of the 3rd-and-longs (over 5 yds), and made 5 of those (35.7%) … well below our overall 3rd down conversion rate (46.2%). In 2024 our 3rd down conversions were 50.9%, but they fell to 41.2% last season. We’re above that right now (46.2%), but the 3rd-and-longs are really dragging us down. And that needs to improve, as does our Red Zone TD Percentage (37.5% is abysmal).

I dont think we need to worry yet. Our defense was pretty solid first half but they tired in the second due to lack of offensive production. Its a new OC new play book and our 1st team had 0 snaps through preseason. The rust will shake off but its going to cost us with the lack of prep work done. We should be 1-1 but we arent. Dust ourselves off move on to next week, no point in being negative about the coaching or how bad we are, it is what it is, theres going to be 0 change until the end of the season. We just need to build up the team and get behind them. We can temper our expectations and complain until they change things once weve been eliminated from playoffs. Until then i say we get behind the team and hope they fix themselves and put themselves in contention

Evans made the offense function…..we should have unloaded Godwin for a draft pick and done everything possible to make Evans know he was the ONLY #1 WR in this offense including replacing Bowles with a coach that inspired confidence in Evans.

I completely believe ME would have resigned if this franchise had ditched Bowles and company back when they had a shot at a real HC. It has to be the receivers that are not getting open. Baker has no where to throw the football. He is running for his life after 2 seconds. But when the plays are there to be made he usually misfires. I think he is 1-6 on deep balls this year and they were all wide open in nfl terms. And I donāt hear the announcers saying he had a guy wide open that he missed like in other gams i watch with really bad qb play. But yes something is off. I watch other games and itās one two fire the ball to a receiver on a slant and move the chains. Watching other games minus the jameis Winston last night that looked very much like our offense right now. Other teams offense just looks a lot more cohesive and on schedule and rhythm. We have no rhythm. There is no first read throws itās always 3rd, 4th reads or have to take a shot because time is out in the pocket to throw. What happened to the three step drop and let it rip. Are they scared to let baker do that in fear he wonāt see a dropping linebacker that is what it feels like they donāt trust mayfield to see the field on 3 step drop 1st read throw.

Robinson is learning in real time how to protect his scheme from Bakers’ inability in certain areas, just like our OL is being asked to block, hold the block, then re-engage blocks in pass pro long enough for Baker to see anything he likes.
This is the what this team has looked at when he can’t say “eff it, Mike is down there somewhere”, more dinks & dunks than a demolition derby.

They seem to be using Godwin as a check down or āif all else failsā option. He should be the first option and then build around that. Ebuka and even Tez can play that role in the slot if Godwin gets hurt, too. The screens to running backs behind the line of scrimmage are a disaster.

This sunday was another Todd Bowles special- revive a scrub QB’s career. Next up? Carson Wentz or Kyler Murray. Two more scrubs and it won’t matter which because his lousy defense give either one of them enough time in the pocket to make a ham sandwich. He’s so obsessed with stopping the run that the pass rush suffers. I’d rather the implement the old approach – taught by Monte Kiffin, an actual defensive genius -of playing the run on your way to the QB.

Biggest bunch of bull Iāve ever heard. No quarterback can carry a team by himself. Mahomes is the greatest maybe ever and the last couple seasons have not been as successful for him because his support system was lacking. This year so far that support system looks a lot better and it shows. The running game with Walker looks great. Kelce looks rejuvenated and the wideouts look better. The defense looks hungry. Maybe the Chiefs are back. A general manager should know better. That being said, any quarterback would miss Evans. So far Egbuka has been very good, but heās not Mike Evans or JSN, at least not yet. If all the receivers get on the same page with Baker, the Bucs offense should be pretty damn good. The other problem is that the defense so far is not what we thought it was going to be.

Joe he does make a point about not having ME13 any but you did counter with the Seahawks game we didnāt have him but honestly since his injury and departure baker hasnāt bin the same. Yea I get he was injured and that has bin the excuse and the oline has bin injured. Now that baker is healthy and the oline is healthy what in the heck is going on with him ? I will say the oline has not played up to its potential so is that why baker isnāt playing well ? Everyone wants to run off Bowles but if your offense turns the ball over 6x in 2 games and just goes 3 and out every serious your defense is going to suffer no matter whoās defense is out there this is a team sport the offense needs to help the defense and the defense did that with a pick 6 and shutting down the best WR in the game against cincy
