Bucs GM Jason Licht.
Joe hasn’t written a 2026 Bucs season eulogy, far from it. But there is no question that the Bucs’ season is on the brink.
Collectively, the team is still soft, something that was supposed to be fixed in the offseason by adding new assistant coaches and more aggressive players.
It hasn’t worked. Losing to the Browns in a home-opener is more than a red flag.
So what’s the next step? Joe knows it’s not just sitting around saying, “Todd will get it fixed.”
Todd Bowles does not have a zero-tolerance policy for jogging defensive players and he may not be willing to bench underperformers.
So Joe would applaud if Buccaneers Ring of Honor general manager Jason Licht swung a trade soon to inject more accountability into the roster.
The status woe is not ok. Maybe a couple of shots from the front office could spark something. The Bucs certainly have talent that would be in demand.

I suspect that Licht wasn’t entirely on board with retaining Bowles, and that this was a hive-mind decision. Unfortunately for Licht and his team, there is a high risk that they will get blown up in this looming fiasco.
The paper talent this team has is impossible to assess with such weak, passive coaching. Is Ruben Bain going to be a bust like Joe Tryon-Shoyanka? How can you tell? The kid’s potential could be ruined by the time a competent coaching staff is in place.
With maybe the exception of Atlanta and Miami, this is the worst team in the league. Cleveland at least looks motivated. Arizona is playing with passion. The Titans almost beat Philadelphia. Total organizational failure.

Tom Brady couldn’t overcome the mediocrity of Bowles….there’s nobody in the league that is going to have any success with changing the attitude of this team. Brady changed the entire culture but he had a coach with equal passion. Bowles is a fraud….he can’t lead men. He may be a really good Xs and Os defensive coach but leading a team is a different skill. A trade won’t fix anything, it’s merely a pacifier for fans to buy a few more weeks of hope before the season is done.

There is no trade that will inject life into this team. The ceiling for Todd was 8-9 wins. It’s now 6 or 7.

My theory is that Bruce Arians made a backdoor agreement with the Glaciers to anoint Todd Bowles as his HC successor…for a five year period…in return for a legitimate chance of winning a Super Bowl with a championship roster (adding Brady of course). This is the only explanation for retaining Bowles after the absolute precipitous disgrace of last year! We deserve better than this. Rewarding Baker and Vea with contract extensions is one thing…but rewarding Bowles with another season…and NOTHING…..I repeat…NOTHING has changed or improved for a team that has talent…and NO HEART!!! Bowles’ scheme doesn’t work…the middle of the field is ALWAYS open, quarterbacks throw short passes on their tippy toes over the pile of people who can’t break through the line. GO BUCS!!!

We knew there would be questions about the Bucs pass rush, LB corp, and back end of the defense. Two games in and what we know so far is that outside of rookies Trotter and Scott, who on defense is earning their paycheck?
Anyone who thought the RB room was solid with Irving and Gainwell is kidding themselves. They might make a few splash plays but who fears the Bucs ground attack?
Things could get ugly when a very well coached Vikings team plays the Bucs next weekend.

The time to trade a player and send a message has passed. The perfect opportunity to do so was with malcontent VV. But oh that plucky Bright Licht drove a hard bargain and instead gave him a raise and a golden parachute for next season. Without Big Brother Bruce and Brady…Licht is lost. Not sure I see the talent either. The last two free agent additions on defense have been busts…and expensive at that.

Godwin has some value, but he is old, with some serious injury history.
Only real Value is Mayfield, Wirfs, Goedeke, Vea. The rest are third day draft picks.
That’s it. Everyone else is average(a few) or below average.
I know that’s gonna trigger everyone who thinks this is a good team.

Talent doesn’t just evaporate overnight. That’s according to the ENTIRE NFL OTHER TEAMS WERE LITERALLY TRYING TO TRADE UP FOR EGBUKA….
Here is where the disconnect actually lives:
* **Mismanaging Defensive Traits:** Explosive, gap-shooting disruptors like Kancey and Yaya Diaby belong in a fast 4-3 front. Forcing them into heavy 2-gap hybrid roles or dropping edge players into coverage neutralizes their best skills.
* **Over-Complicated Calls & Bad Tackling:** Pre-snap confusion and missed assignments point to bloated call sheets. When defenders are forced to think instead of react, they take bad angles and miss tackles.
* **O-Line & Schematic Regression:** A line that dominated 2–3 years ago doesn’t lose its physical ability that fast. Blown stunt pickups and free rushers stem from predictable play-calling and poor on-field communication.
Licht did his job. Until this staff adapts the scheme to fit what their players actually do best, the results on Sundays won’t change.

Talent without effort is a losing cause. I have always stuck up for Licht, but no more. He’s the architect of this mess. He signed low accountability losers to huge contracts. Vea, Baker, McCullum, and his free agent signings are horrible. To top it off, he brought back Bowles. I say burn it all down, like the theatre scene from Inglourios Basterds.

Rueben Bain Jr. is the poster child for this scheme failure.
At Miami, he wrecked games doing one simple thing: lining up as a 4-3 edge, shooting his gap, and hunting the QB.
Now, this coaching staff has a rookie reading 2-gap flows, processing complex checks, and thinking instead of reacting. The result? His explosive first step disappears, offensive tackles lock him up, and he goes invisible on the stat sheet.
Jason Licht drafted a hammer. The coaching staff is trying to play chess with him. Put Bain in a 4-man front, tell him to pin his ears back, and let him run. It’s not that complicated.

I don’t think Jason Licht had anything to do with keeping Todd Bowles for another year. This was on the owners. In fact, I think the Glazers had a huge part of extending Baker’s and Vita’s contract. While Jason Licht is not perfect, he’s better than 80% of the GMs out there.

“Ring of Honor” is a freaking joke. This roster is just lacking overall, when compared to most other teams in the league. The product I see out there on the field, is lacking the ELITE speed, and athleticism to compete. There are NO “FREAKS.” And, you just locked yourself in LONGTERM, at ‘tip-top-of-the-market’ MONEY, to an EXPENSIVE and an AGING rapidly, beaten up and banged up, reckless and erratic, often “injured” and inconsistent, undersized QUARTERBACK, who is focused on all of the WRONG THINGS, and is one huge walking DISTRACTION. While, having a Head Coach, who is NOT a “HEAD COACH,” whom you had to go out and hire HIM extra ‘special’ assistants, to AID HIM with just the basic average in-game ‘decision-making’ that ANY modern-day Head Coach, should just instinctively KNOW in HIS SLEEP. Literally, THE most elementary STUFF. It’s all just one BIG CLUSTER that NO ONE wants to be in, and with NO END or obvious ‘fix’ in sight. THIS is just a BAD Football Team, and a POORLY ran franchise, from top to bottom. Now, that TOM BRADY” is loooong gone..l They don’t know what the HELL they are doing. They are totally LOST. I have no proof, but I don’t think Jason resigns Baker or Vea on his own, and I don’t think Bowles would still be his head coach. That’s why I personally wouldn’t fire the guy. His hands are tied by ownership forcing him to resign guys and keep a coach he didn’t even pick—Bruce Arians was the last guy he actually hired for the job.
If you don’t work with the coach to draft talent, then that talent won’t get used correctly. Oh wait, I feel like that’s exactly what he did with Rueben Bain. He basically said, “I don’t care, Todd, he’s a beast of a pass rusher—make it work.” And what does Todd Bowles do? He has Bain dropping into coverage and playing 2-gap read as a 3-4 outside linebacker. Bain is a classic 3-down defensive end: put his hand in the dirt, let him play his 1-gap, and let him wreak havoc on the guy with the ball.
To me, Licht is the only reason this team isn’t bottom-feeders. He built the roster Brady wanted to join, and he hired BA, who got Brady here in the first place. Ever since Brady and BA retired, Licht has basically been GM by title only—told, “This is your coach, now draft the players he wants to fit his scheme.”
Worst of all, if Alex Anzalone makes a tackle or Baker completes a throw—literally pick one play out of both games—the Bucs are 2-0 instead of 0-2, even with this ridiculous scheme and obvious play-calling on both sides of the ball. But yeah, sure, it’s a “lack of talent.” LMAO.
Jason Licht has built an amazing roster. When did we draft Bucky again?? Hurst that late, Parrish in Round 3 that was a steal, and that’s just getting started. Other teams would love to have the talent we have. But we continue to force a round peg into a square hole. We’re asking birds to swim and airplanes to explore the Mariana Trench, and acting like it makes total sense.

The Buc’s are not forcing their will on either side of the ball. They are being out muscled.
Mayfield will live or die depending on how well the OL protects. So far they have been below par. Will that change? I have no clue! BM6 needs to be more accurate downfield. Perhaps he’s losing confidence. He needs to make good throws to finish out games. We’ll find out in the next couple of games if the Bucs can compete.
The D shows some improvement. CBs have been doing decent. The front 7… Not so much. Very little pressure. Plus Bowles can’t figure out a way to cover the middle of the field still. TEs keep burning the D. Also, they can’t tackle for shi* . But their biggest problem is making a play when they really need to consistently. Things don’t look good so far. Will that change? If not Bowles will be gone!

Yeah, he said he wanted to get the Baker deal done, but the offer he made wasn’t accepted. It was clearly for way less money—or at least WAY fewer guarantees—until the owners stepped in. Then, suddenly, after they had dinner with Baker, it’s magically done.
It’s just like Vea: Licht wanted him, but at *his* price. Ownership meddled and screwed the team over. It’s the exact same situation as Bruce Arians announcing Todd Bowles as his successor—Licht didn’t even get to make the choice, he just had to say, “OK, well, what do we do now?”
Based on those Miami rumors, Brady literally still wanted to play—just not for Todd Bowles. What does that tell you?

Explosiveness. That was the word I lost and had meant to add… along with, speed and athleticism. This ROSTER lacks the ELITE-level TALENT, to compete with the Top Teams in this LEAGUE. It doesn’t have the JUICE. I said before the season had even started (said it for all throughout the entire offseason), that THIS is a “Bottom-5” ROSTER in the NFC. After their first 2-games, it looks a lot more like, potentially a BOTTOM-5 Roster, in the ENTIRE LEAGUE. 💯

Lots of words but hardly anyone mentions that Baker threw a perfect pass to Hurst in the end zone that he should have caught. If not caught, refs should have thrown flag for interference as the defender was all over Hurst with hands before the ball arrived.

Brady, literally got Bruce FIRED. He WANTED TO play for TODD. Because, he didnt want to be held accountable during his last season, AND the ‘relationship’ had began to sour. Bruce had ZERO ‘intentions’ of walking-away, when he was FORCED TO. Literally, within just WEEKS of the DRAFT. There’s no doubt in my mind that ownership was HEAVILY involved in those decisions, it’s not just Licht…
As someone else said, careful what you wish for fans. While Licht has some issues, he is at worst the 2nd best GM we’ve ever had. This team has talent, they’re just coached poorly.

No we shouldn’t trade any draft picks. We don’t want to handicap the next regime that will be starting next year. If anything we should have a fire sale here in a few weeks and get rid of the dead weight on this team so that way the next coach and GM have a ton of draft picks to work with. Time to start thinking rebuild

And, add a another year of “wear & tear” on a rapidly aging now, 31-YEAR OLD. It’s very rare for most QB’s to still be playing at an ELITE-level, by the time they are 35. And, Baker is undersized and has taken A LOT of hits.

You start with Firing Todd Bowles. Jason can stay he is not coaching the team Todd is. Todd should have never been a H.C. You see it all over the leauge, O.C’s. or D.C.’s get promoted to H.C. just to fail and go back. Todd just sucks. Always has even with the Jets. You have to believe Glaziers just dont want to pay. Fire Todd promote Robinson as interm then bring in Mike Tomlin or and a real D.C.

@ Dean Bucs Fan 4 Life – The Baker-Extension is farrrrr more detrimental to the franchise moving forward, than the retaining of BOWLES for another season. Extending Baker was a CRUSHING MOVE. You can just walk-away from a COACH, without it affecting the team financially, in the future. THIS Baker-Deal, will literally affect EVERYTHING THEY DO for the next 4-5 YEARS, where they’ll STILL be laying for it. Long after Bowles, is just a memory.

They had a chance to send a message by trading Vita and not caving to Baker.
Instead, they rewarded Vita for sitting out and demanding a trade and panicked on Baker.
This team has no vision.
I’ve been a big supporter of JL, but those two moves, along with letting Coen walk out of the building is enough.
You NEVER let a guy, offensive guru who had the best offense in team history walk away. They should have offered him the HC gig two years ago. FAIL

Re Enough- I remember the 80’s and 90s. All those years of consecutive losing seasons. The majority of the current players weren’t even born yet. You kids get a paycheck to play a game that so many others wish to get a chance. The Browns were supposed to be an easy win. It is all uphill from here. If your fellow players are trying to tank the year, you’re off to a good start. Individual players look great on paper, but you need to play as a team. If your coaches cannot show you how to work as a team, try to figure it out between yourselves. Work with each other, not by yourself. One person cannot carry the team. And Glaziers, don’t hand out multi millions without conditions. Like give smaller salary, with massive bonus for each win. And try to give the winning players a share of the bonuses. They want the money, have them earn it. Don’t just hand it to them. Incentive bonuses work.Who would want to play when one person gets so much more, and they have no chance of earning more? Hand out incentive bonuses again. It worked for the Superbowl season.

I have a trade idea…
Try to dump Baker off on the Redskins for anything they offer.
This would allow Tampa to mostly get out from the disastrous deal the owners forced Licht to sign.
The Redskins might be so upset with Daniels getting hurt again, you might catch them in an emotional state where they’d do a deal. Offer it now before they have a chance to really think it through.

You know who else had a ton of talent? Devin White, Jameis…. talent ain’t worth much if your head isn’t right. These players lack character, pride, a desire to be the best. They all want to be top 5 paid by position and JL has ZERO process for vetting their worthiness for making them such (see Baker, AWJ, Vea, every free agent not hand picked by Brady or Bruce, Mc C…). Even if players are worth the bag, JL presides over a coaching staff that soon undermines their abilities. If JL was truly ROH, he would have been priming the Glazers for replacing Todd. I get that Bruce tied his hands because Jason truly was not at the helm, but Brady’s losing season and the steady defensive decline should have woken good fellow Jason enough to be aware that Todd was/IS not the longterm soln.
Tbh, it’s hard not to see talent on most teams. These are groomed millionaire college athletes. What separates the good from great is attitude, character, and leadership….NOT stats. Stats get you paid. Character gets rings and our maliable dough faced GM is not qualified to address the significant character shortfall on this team in both players or coaches

I like this, Joe. I’m on the player bandwagon. I think these coaches are okay, and if they’re not okay, I’m not convinced there is a team of coaches out there who would get more out of them. We’re going down the Saints drain by collecting overpaid, old players in a league of young studs and I’m tired of these loafers. Won’t mention names but don’t need too much of an imagination to figure it out, I think we’re all aligned. (start with the players whose best seasons were their contract years)
