Todd Bowles’ Study Routine Restored?

August 23rd, 2026

How many times can 2025 Bucs offensive coordinator Josh Grizzard be hurled under the bus?

That’s unclear. However, it felt like Jon Gruden went there last night. Chucky was on the WFLA-TV Bucs game broadcast sharing nuggets from his pregame meeting with Bowles.

“I liked visiting with Todd Bowles the other day. I think he’s back in his routine,” Gruden said.

“He trusts the offense, the direction they’re heading. He’s back into his study routine and he’s taken full control of this defense. And so far it has really showed tonight.”

Joe’s translation of Chucky: Bowles had panic attacks knowing Grizzard was his coordinator last year and it detracted from his ability to be the best defensive coordinator he could be, including watching enough film.

As Sage of Tampa Bay Sports Ira Kaufman noted on his podcast early this morning, ‘Why couldn’t somebody else work with Grizzard?’

    Yes!
I picked up on that comment

  2. Joe Bob Pigskin Says:

Right. Well, let’s see how things go this year before Todd gets a pass.

  3. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

Grizzard wasn’t ready, that’s what this tells me. Z-Rob with his experience in comparison to Grizz, frees Bowles up to focus on his defense. Kind of lines up with what Rachaad White said about him needing to be able to focus on the big picture, makes it hard to do that holding the hand of a your green OC.

  4. ‘74 Bucs Fan Says:

I’ve said it here before but it concerned me greatly watching Grizz holding the clipboard while his hands were shaking. Shaking clipboard is now way to go through life.

This happened well in to the season. Not a good look or a confidence builder. Imagine being a RB standing next to shaky Grizz on the sidelines. “You want to run what play again?”

  5. Buddha Says:

There was plenty of fault to go around last year, not only Grizz but the defensive line coach and secondary coach–they’re all gone now. You certainly can see a difference in the enthusiasm. It’s all about injuries and depth now. The fact that Licht was willing to back Bowles said a lot.

  6. BA’s Red Pen Says:

Todd needs to study up on how to be a good head coach.

  7. Obvious Says:

His 8th year as a HC and we think this is the big problem? Grizzard had to go but I seem to recall the defense being awful in ‘24 with one of the best play offensive callers in the world on our sideline. What was the issue that season? Did he not study enough that year too?

Excuses from a guy this old doesn’t play.
