“Ted Hurst Is A Dude”; Mayfield-Lawrence Practice Stats
August 26th, 2026
Joe already shared nuggets and quotes from Bucs-Jaguars practice yesterday, but how about more?
Joe loves the no-nonsense Jaguars reporting of Mia O’Brien. She’s been doing it a long time and covers the team year-round, NFL Scouting Combine, etc.
O’Brien was patrolling the sidelines yesterday even more than Joe was, furiously taking notes with a clear plan to monitor the simultaneous action on two practice fields — not easy to do.
Some O’Brien highlights:
- I had Trevor Lawrence 16-of-30, including a highlight reel touchdown to Parker Washington that may have been a sack in the opening period. Nick Mullens was 8-of-11. The offense was good. Maybe not a laser show.
Joe will add that “may have been a sack” is a critical point that’s part of any training camp practice. Quarterbacks were not allowed to be hit yesterday. A Bucs “sack” by Rakeem “Nacho” Nuñez-Roches, where he grabbed a fistful of Lawrence’s jersey was about as much contact on a QB ever to be seen at a camp practice.
O’Brien contined with her QB data.
- With that said, the story of the day was absolutely the Jaguars’ defense. While Baker Mayfield started out 4-for-4, he finished 14-of-33. And that’s if I don’t include a would-be, fifth sack by Josh Hines-Allen, who had four no-doubt sacks (including a strip sack) and a TFL. At one point, across four series, Baker completed just three of his 13 pass attempts. During that stretch, the Jaguars punched out a fumble (Foye Oluokun), picked off Baker (Buster Brown), broke up a pair of passes (Travis Hunter and Jalen Huskey), and more than once got their whole defensive sideline juiced and running onto the field thanks to their run defense. That was just four series. The dominance stretched throughout the practice.
Joe will note that the interception was a tipped ball as Chris Godwin was hit as the pass arrived. Good defense. And Godwin likely makes a different kind of play on that ball in the regular season. It’s still “practice.”
More from O’Brien about an electric Bucs rookie.
- I also candidly wrote down in my notebook “Ted Hurst is a dude,” he had a touchdown over Jarrian Jones on a fade in the back corner of the end-zone and, on another play, plucked the ball out of the air over Travis Hunter. There will be packages for him, even if, once Emeka Egbuka returns from turf toe Hurst may not be a regular contributor for Tampa.
For the record, the Hurst fade reception was ruled incomplete by practice referees because allegedly Hurst didn’t get his feet inbounds. However, Joe was about 9 feet from the play and it sure looked like Hurst was in bounds. And the divot mark in the end zone seemed to verify the catch. This was a 6-yard pass and Hurst’s body control was very Mike Evans-like.
Hurst later caught a 25-yard pass down the seam from Mayfield. The play was blown dead quickly but Hurst’s YAC was sure on display for a brief moment. Hurst exploded after the catch. Later, Joe also appreciated how Hurst laid out for a ball an inch beyond his reach.
Joe will have more notes this morning.

Will forever believe that the mentality and attitude of teams are dictated & created by the HC. Yesterday was just the latest example of Coen having his team fready & todd not so much (the rest being the last 4 years). So many fail to see that todd will forever lack the intangibles & skillset to be able to set the tone for his team over the course of a full season. He’s proven that his entire 9 year career as a HC. The .446 win % doesn’t happen by accident & it isn’t a mirage.

wow hurst sounds like the real deal…if he is, we are stacked at receiver once again…
i already think jmac is gonna have a great season

Was Wirfs on the field?
August 26th, 2026 at 7:10 am
Well that’s what these scrimmages are for to get better. Hopefully we learn from it and are better for it when the season starts. But damn 5 sacks by one player. That’s giving me flashbacks of the Detroit game where Aiden Hutchinson just lit are reserve tackle up. In the first half

How many catches did Gainwell and Bucky have? How about our tight ends? Hmm. That’s what I thought.
So the 14-33 was to our wide receivers? And that’s missing Emeka and JMac. Hmm.
There would be more sacks if we weren’t checking down and only practicing wide receiver routes, right? Did we run any screens? Hmm.
Stats are good sometimes. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen Mayfield’s arm any better than what I saw yesterday.
That’s why they call these things practices. And we got enough practice in that tells me that we have a top tier passing game ready to play.

Remember years ago when the Bucs scrimmaged the Patriots and someone touched Brady? The NE bench emptied and the GOAT shot back with fire! You’d of thunk the Bucs were the biggest cheap-shot artists in history! instead of just their lowly, bungling selves.

“Ted Hurst is a dude,” Meanwhile, “Mike has a groin.”

@ adam from ny Says: “wow hurst sounds like the real deal…if he is, we are stacked at receiver once again…”
STACKED!? Might wanna go and checkout that ESPN Fantasy Rankings (by position) from yesterday… Same with the Running Backs. The Jags did have like 4 of the Top-44, including Hunter. But, I don’t people a lot of people on here, really realize just HOW MANY STUDS there are across the league on ALL the teams. Especially, at the WR and RB positions. EVERY fanbase ‘thinks’ THEIR WR’s and RB’s are “LOADED.” It’s barely even an “AVERAGE” group, and that’s with a completely HEALTHY Chris Godwin, too!!!! But, “STACKED!?” Far from it.
August 26th, 2026 at 8:27 am
Well not a good feeling to see a team get dominated like that. However, that happens. Today will be a good test to see if yesterday was just an off day or the Jags are for real and the Bucs pretenders. It is early yet this type of play early on can be a real indicator of what a team really is. I know the secondary is certainly suspect and that looked to be an accurate truth yesterday. I sure hope the Bucs give up the fantasy that McColumn is something he is not, a cb that can cover. Morrison may be able to play , but again yesterday proved he has a long way to go. The good news, he stayed on the field

Who cares ..These type of stories happen every year …If the Bengals D owns us then I will will be worried…2020 we didnt even have a proper training camp

It’s just practice. Cohen had his boys fired up because he was fired up. Probably due to the (deserved) abuse coming from Tampa fans. We’ll see if they keep it up today but again, so what. I’m more concerned about the QB. If Baker does not come out excited that may indicate he was intimidated. That would surprise me.

Mia seems like a keeper.
August 26th, 2026 at 8:30 am
it sounds to me like hurst has been the number one while mek is hurt
August 26th, 2026 at 8:31 am
Reality is getting a lot closer. It will be here SOON. If Chris Godwin is not back to bring his old self again, AND if Baker does not have a CAREER year… Then, this offense is really going to STRUGGLE, and won’t be any better than they were at the very end of last season. And, that was VERY BAD.
August 26th, 2026 at 8:38 am
“Well, that’s just FANTASY Football, which is all BS.” Uh, NO. Just look at the names. Same with the RB’s.
August 26th, 2026 at 8:41 am
excuse makers already in DEC form lol
GO BUCS!!!!!
August 26th, 2026 at 8:52 am
It may have ‘just’ been a practice for the Bucs, but it was much more for Coen as it will be at game time. He wants to stick in the FO’s faces what they missed in not promoting him to HC. At some point the animus former Bucs players and coaches will be revealed and it won’t be pretty. Yesterday’s ’practice’ was a little taste of it.
August 26th, 2026 at 9:16 am
I agree. Keeping track of stats in a practice is wild! The whole point of practice is to take risks, allow yourself the freedom to make mistakes, learn from them, and get better. Tom Brady had plenty of practices during his Patriots days where he threw well under 60%.
Practice stats don’t matter and they don’t count.
August 26th, 2026 at 9:21 am
Bucs players fantasy values are depressed because of how badly they did last year not accounting for all the injuries. It’s a great season to draft several of them because of this because you can get great value for your picks and this offense is going to do great with all the starting offensive linemen in. They stink with a 4th string left tackle, but that’s only temporary!
August 26th, 2026 at 9:22 am
“Joe will note that the interception was a tipped ball as Chris Godwin was hit as the pass arrived. Good defense.”
Good defense of on one of many overthrown passes from what I’ve gathered.
August 26th, 2026 at 9:35 am
Who was blocking Allen?? (Or wasn’t blocking Allen)
August 26th, 2026 at 10:08 am
The Bucs need to get their O healthy. Wirfs, Egbuka, McMillan, Otton, Chukwuma, Skule… Then there’s the D…Bain! Come On!!!!
August 26th, 2026 at 10:21 am
Bucs should have made Liam the head coach.
August 26th, 2026 at 10:34 am
Saw youtube video of Hurst getting 2 solid catches downfield on Travis Hunter yesterday.
Hurst looks like a true WR1/X Receiver.
August 26th, 2026 at 10:51 am
Hurst is being slept on. Hurst is going to be a problem for defenses.
August 26th, 2026 at 11:47 am
Stacked receiver room based only on potential.
August 26th, 2026 at 12:43 pm
Baker owns,Burrows.
August 26th, 2026 at 1:22 pm
Can we trade Jenna for Mia?
August 26th, 2026 at 1:54 pm
Basically… O-LINE needs to be healthy and ready to go for Cincinnati
Don’t be surprised to see back up O-linemen and a CB signed off waivers over the next two weeks
