Steelers, Jets, Vikings Fans Already Talking Baker Mayfield 2027

The mere thought of Baker Mayfield hitting the free agent market after the 2026 season has energized fans in Pittsburgh.
Today, Joe has seen Steelers podcast after podcast, and blogs, thinking Mayfield is an intriguing and possibly ideal fit after what likely is quarterback Aaron Rodgers’ final season.
Jets fans are having a similar reaction. Remember, they’re stuck with Geno Smith on a one-year contract.
Mike Florio, the renowned Vikings fan and ProFootballTalk.com guru of NBC Sports, was even talking today about Mayfield being an option for his beloved Vikings next season if the Kyler Murray/J.J. McCarthy experiment fails. Florio thought the Vikings should have pursued Mayfield after the 2023 season, his first in Tampa.
Yes, there’s a great chance Mayfield will have a free agent market in 2027, if he and the Bucs can’t come to terms on contract extension.
The Bucs could slap the franchise tag on Mayfield after this season, but that doesn’t mean Mayfield would be happy about it. And why exactly would the Bucs want Mayfield if he desired to move on to a team where he felt appropriately valued?
Joe expects the Bucs and Mayfield to remain happily married in 2027, but this contract situation remains exceptionally sticky.

He wont liike it their. Pittsburgh is rough on HOF, SB winning Qbs (bradshaw, ben) and even winning,pro bowl, playoff game winning qbs (Kordell Stewart) qbs. The fans and media wont coddle him. But the guy who is in a dogfight every year for the nfc South will kick tail in the division of Burrow and lamar? yes, with all the qb injuries the nfc south had a slightly better record then the afc north last year.
Vikings and Jets huh? yeah this backup, wind up on 8-9 teams thing is becoming a possibility.

With Baker this team can be competitive. Without him the team is back to irrelevant. He is a good QB. Tampa won’t likely be in position to draft a better QB. Any QB available in free agency will likely cost at least what Baker wants. Sign him. Get it done.

If Baker is a FA in 2027, it means he played like garbage, everyone got fired, and the team doesn’t want him.
If Baker plays well, the Bucs will pay him – and they can franchise him.
The idea that the team needs to panic and sign Baker coming off an AWFUL year where he singlehandedly cost the team the playoffs, got the entire offensive staff fired and caused Mike Evans to flee to the other side of the country to play “with a good quarterback” … it’s nonsense.
The Bucs have him for a year, let’s see what happens.

For QB play? Absolutely, once you get into explaining whose fault INTs are, you know the fan base is starved.
Brady Era we had an obvious air about us, no matter who lined up across us we were expected to win.
Dudes are so sure we’re going to see the HC fired and this is the last year, but they want Baker signed to a longterm deal being 31 years of age. Like, he’s not THAT type of QB nor is that the norm in how things operate with regime change. Unless you’re say, Jameis or Josh Freeman “good” lol

I fail to understand how the Baker Bashers find a $50M/per annum franchise tag is acceptable for one year, but not for four or five, given that the value of $50M diminishes over time. And the QB is the last person you want on the tag. An unhappy linebacker can vent on the opponents; an unhappy quarterback sucks the juice out of his own team.

Max actually if I had my way everyone on her could be amicable and cordial because the way things are on here, I can’t get a answer from Baker supporters. For example, when you guys say Cleveland stunted his growth. I bring up his record there on 4 years (still below.500) is better then it is the 4 years he has been gone. Then I’ll bring up he had one elite Olines and was surrounded by young pro bowlers on offense. Then I’ll bring up Carolina how they were 1-5 with him and 6-5 without him. Then when you guys say his defenses in Tampa have been historically bad,I’m like wait. They were 7th in scoring in 2023. The Commanders in 2024 got to a title game with a worse defense after winning 12 games. The Bears won 11 games last year with the 29th ranked defense (our was 19th). Why did our offense rank 23rd in 2023 and 22st in 2025? Why every place Baker has went every receiver not named Mike Evans see a steep decline in production? See after you guys ignore this questions,hurl those insults the questions remain. It strikes a nerve because the truth hurts. You have no answer for it.. Just you guys take a stance and dig in but you know it..And alot of us aren’t backing down on Baker..He’s a egomaniac and a diva. They will NOT be extending him..

I don’t want to give him Anything. I’d had moved. The FO is stuck in the stone age.. Division title and hike playoff gan s mean alot. This division so putrid it feels within resch and they don’t want to blow it up. I feel you can blow it up and still compete. The Saints won 7 games last year ,1 less then us. I would have traded Baker for whatever I could get on 2027 draft capital. Probably a 3rd but more important if ate all that dead money this year..Let Otton walk and Mike as as well..Go to a new coach prospect with 150M in cap space and about 12 picks, several in the first 3 rounds. Hell in this division you would have still won 4-5 games.. Imagine the nightmare if this team wins 6 or 7 games next year..Will have to pay to move up and will have dead cap space..This team is closer to having the #1 pick the winning a SB. No faith in Baker.

Baker has to play like a winner consistently or he’s not worth it. Lots of QBs can go 2-7 with game crushing late interceptions and fumbles, and they cost peanuts.

Right. Not only that he got here at the age of 28. 5 years and 70 starts under his belt and like 72 games he appeared in. It’s been a unremarkable 3 years with him. At some point is, the FO have to wonder what we would look like with someone else under center. Darnold took over the same team Geno Smith was on 4 years. Geno played well ” on paper” and even won more in Seattle then Baker has in Tampa. Complacency at the QB spot is a no go. We watched a decade of Philly and SF playing musical chairs at QB. I’m ready for it. You can tell the way these ppl are clamoring for a rookie free agent QB they are too..This whole act is tiresome.

Baker is not the type of man to abandon his teammates. That is partly why I have changed my position regarding a trade. BUT if just one little thing goes wrong and ticks him off he just may do what I have before predicted. I’m vacillating on this because I have no idea whatsoever is really going on behind the scenes. If Baker asks for a trade all heck will break loose and Jason and the owners don’t need that. For 50 years I have wanted this team to have a true franchise QB. They finally got one and look where we are. If Baker had just a sip of the water ME13 drank he might just say you know what. Remember the uproar just one social media post by a wife caused not long ago.

Nope, if you get tired of reading it,log off. Here you go: Baker is perfect. He was just hurt last year which was actually the 3rd or 4th best season of his putrid career. Nothing is ever his fault. All his teammates suck. Every teammate he has had has sucked Every organization sucked..Every coach has sucked..He lead the leauge in ” grits and moxies”..He is the all time leader in professional team sports with 198 shoulder chips. He once played a entire game with a runny nose..Lock him up because McVay is targeting him and took Ty Simpson #13 overall to throw everyone off. He’s going to sign him to a 10 year/1.5B deal. By the small,miniscule ,minute chance Baker underwhelems this year it’s because of the contract hanging over his head and fatherhood. JL could get ARod and 3rd/4th Rd pick (due to the age gap) for Baker is and I think we’d actually get the better QB for 2026. Sal you called it months ago. OMG, what a bunch of drama queens. Now Baker is demanding a trade? LOL!
He’s under contract, he’s not getting traded, he’s making $40M cash this year, he’s not sitting out. The idea that the Bucs should give him a huge new franchise altering contract when he hasn’t earned it and is under contract is laughable.
In three years in Tampa he’s had one middling season, after which the Bucs let him shop for a deal, and the market wasn’t nearly as hot for him as he thought it would be. Then had a very good 2nd season (and by very good he went 1-5 in prime-time and playoff games), then in his 3rd season was mostly good for the frist 6 games before falling flat on his face and costing the team the playoffs, and getting the entire Bucs offensive staff fired.
Baker is under contract, let’s see what happens. If he’s good, then it will mean in 2 of the last 3 seasons he was good – and that will get a QB paid. If he’s bad, it means in 2 of the last 3 seasons he was bad – and that will get everyone fired. If he’s somewhere in between, then that means in the last 4 years he was twice middling, once good, and once bad – which means he’s just a middling QB who is wanting to be paid like a star.

He’s making $40M this year – has made $131M over this career, plus millions doing awful TV commercials.
But he’s got to have security and feed his family… LOL!
Meanwhile, Brady didn’t worry too much about feeding his family – just about winning, yet he seemed to make out OK.
Also, as a reminder, Baker is 2-9 in primetime and playoff games since joining the Bucs – and just cost the Bucs a playoff spot last year and got the offensive staff fired.
