So one fun aspect of the upcoming Netflix “Quarterback” docuseries is that Joe Flacco is featured along with Baker Mayfield, among others.
Flacco’s surprising 2025 season was highlighted by a trade tied to the Bucs.
In midseason, Flacco was sent from Cleveland to Cincinnati. The Bengals were desperate for a new starter after watching backup Jake Browning go winless and be downright bad through three starts in place of injured Joe Burrow. Browning also threw three interceptions in another game, when he first relieved Burrow off the bench in Week 2.
Now, Browning is Tampa Bay’s handpicked backup behind Mayfield.
Might “Quarterback” reveal some Browning bashing? That’s unclear. But what has clarity is Browning getting bashed on CBS Sports HQ by draft guru and former college running back Emory Hunt, as well as NFL analyst John Breech, whose dad played for the Bengals.
From what looked like a home office with a Bengals helmet in the background, Breech fired away during a ranking of every NFL quarterbacks room.
“[Browning] played so poorly that the Bengals said, ‘Alright, well, we’re done with you and we’re going to trade for Joe Flacco. So that’s the Buccaneers’ backup quarterback situation right now,” Breech said.
Breech was adamant that the Bucs adding Browning versus the Panthers adding Kenny Pickett as a backup makes the Panthers a better QB room overall, even with Mayfield being better than Panthers starter Bryce Young.
“The Bucs really have an issue with their reserve quarterback situation,” Hunt said. “I like [Browning’s] moxie but he turns the ball over at a high clip.”
Overall, the CBS duo ranked the Bucs QB room the 15th-best in the NFC. That’s right; the NFC.

Thats why we need to draft a true good backup next draft….one waiting in the wings, even after we sign Baker, let him sit and learn….Mestemaker! It’ll cost our first but will be well worth it!

OK I’ll play Max. WHY would any team want to draft a BACKUP? A rookie QB is either starter-capable or he’s not. If he’s not … PASS. I’m not a big advocate for drafting ‘developmental projects’ when it comes to QBs. And especially when it comes to the Bucs. We’re not exactly NFL leaders when it comes to developing QBs.

Daniels will end up being our backup quarterback and eventually our starting qb. If the defense balls out and Daniels shows up, its a no brainer. We have too many UFA;s to sign next year ti resign Baker.

Browning played well when forced to start for Cincy 3 years ago…. So well that he was earning national accolades….
I doubt Browning regressed from being considered one of the better back-up QBs in the league – to one of the worst (according to the Bengals) because he can’t play anymore….
We’ll see during presason what Browning looks like when bullets are flying – but what we likely won’t see is how he performs behind a top OLine like the Bucs starting 5. I think he’ll be fine for a game or two if Baker can’t go at some point during the season.
Beyond that – Daniels seems to have some real potential for a UDFA…. Kid has a very intriguing skill set…. Would be something if Daniels plays so well that he pushes for the #2 spot as a rookie…

Id rather roll the dice and keep daniels. Backups arent winning anyone championships too often and his upside is tremendous. Love that pick…dont love the coach we have though

Browning was actually decent early in his career when given a chance. He sounds and looks pretty awful currently. A Blue Licht Special of sorts perhaps? I think I prefer Jalon Daniels at this point. Either way…once you’re relying on a backup QB long term…your season is typically finished ( exceptions of Hostetler and Nick Foles exist of course l). For us really old heads…Earl Morrall stepping in for Bob Greise to save their perfect season.

3rd and 28 did suck that’s true. Because the head coach is a complete, abject failure. All three phases of the team went into the toilet simultaneously, that’s really hard to accomplish. It takes a special kind of incompetent to pull that off.

He’s a poor qb tho. And he had a ton of weapons there. I’m not sure it’s an upgrade over last season.
I’m hoping this undrafted qb makes some noise.

Did some reading up on Jake Browning and I’m amazed (I didn’t know any of his background). He graduated from University of Washington way back in 2018, but wasn’t drafted (despite an excellent college career). He’s now 30 years old.
o Signed with the Vikings in Apr 2019 & was on their Practice Squad until Aug 2021.
o Signed with the Bengals in Sep 2021 & stayed with them until the end of the 2025 season, then signed with us in Mar 2026.
Overall he’s played in 3 seasons for the Bengals (17 games total) & sports a 4-6 record. High career completion percentage (68.5%) but that appears to be misleading, since he’s thrown for 18 TDs and 15 INTs (has completed almost as many to the opposing defense as he has to his own teammates?). Looks like interceptions have been his undoing.

He played 0 reps in 2024, but was decent as a rookie in 2023.

Rod tried to shoot Browning some bail, but Browning blew his chance in Cincy putting together bad film and giving the ball to the other team. Flacco wasn’t any better, but the Bengals weren’t looking for starters just biding time until they got Burrow back healthy.
Said before, I’ll say it again. I’d rather have Jack Strand on this roster right now over Browning or Bazelak, neither of the guys we have are impressive any way. One of’em might not even have a job in the league if it weren’t for our front offices’ want for those guys, whatever that may be. I also think we got Jalon Daniels to somewhat be in the mold of what our offensive staff wanting in a QB. I don’t even like Daniels like that, but I’ll take him over Baze & Browning as backups. Better off putting a helmet and pads on a jugs machine, that’s more consistent

I asked AI what are the chances of us drafting a QB, in any round, that might start 120 games his first 8 seasons in the NFL. Like Baker Mayfield has done following his 8th season last year. AI said that would be called a statistical anomaly- seeing how that QB would have to average 15 games played for almost a decade. Put the odds at approximately 1%. Not many have ever done it. I think most of us would have to agree that some NFL teams this last 8 years have penciled in Baker as their starter. And that Baker has probably got about as much experience as any QB on the planet when it comes to seeing the newest in defensive schemes, as well as has competed with the best defenders the league has to offer, whether they are vets or rookies, Linebackers or corners, or the ornriest of DLineman. I’ve seen him mince up all pro secondary players, escape the clutches of all pro DLineman, and I’ve watched him do it with, record wise, the 2 worst teams in the history of the league. Get the coaching and the team right, Baker has everything needed at the most important position on our football team. Now, the last thing I’m saying is don’t get a good backup quarterback. We oughta have the QB coaches to get us a backup that doesn’t send chills down our spines when he goes in. But we have a starting quarterback. And all he’s gonna do is keep his head down and compete, and help keep this team contending. Something that Licht and Bowles, and Lavonte and Mike, could NEVER do. Oh yeah. Except for the Brady years. I’m not even a lifelong Bucs fan but I would sure like to see this team wash the Brady team out of our mouths. Baker is just the kind of QB to do that. Unless we decide not to give him that chance.

He really was that bad and that was the best the GM could come up with!
I’d say the 15th ranking is quite generous.
Mayfield was 2-7 down the stretch in 2025. Just superb if you’re Todd Bowles.

He was horrible. So was the decision on Teddy Bridgewater last year. It is why Baker was injured most of the year. They didn’t want to take him out because they had no viable backup. Now they’re in the same boat again.

Browning was brought in so Mayfield doesn’t feel threatened by anyone able to take his spot. His first year Trask gave him a little scare even though he knew he had the job. That’s why they replaced him with Bridgeunderthewater, someone who was no threat to him whatsoever. .

Wash the Brady team out of our mouths???? What the heck are you talking about slurper? We’re you even here until after the Bucs scooped Mayfield off the garbage heap? Poor lil Bakie can’t get out of Brady’s shadow, is that it??? Brady gave us the best two seasons ever. It was Bowles who messed that up. I hope the Bucs don’t cave in to Mayfield’s demand of +$50mil/yr because he hasn’t earned it with his inconsistent play, so all these Baker boyband fans will go away where ever he goes. Losing him would be worth losing them. Mayfield showed his best in 2024 and exactly what we can expect from him unless he has a good defense, that is to get us just close enough to the edge and then sploosh leave us hanging. As long as Bowles is our coach he can’t get us where we want to be.

If we have a good running game with Gainwell, Bucky and tucker and a good defense, it will take a lot of pressure off Baker so he doesn’t have to be a hero every week. That’s where Baker will thrive.
For his carreer, in Baker’s 60 career wins, he had less than 30 pass attempts, (29.7). In his 63 career losses he had an average of 34.3 pass attempts.
So, the less Baker throws, the more he wins.
If we can keep Baker in the 20-24 passes per game range we will hoist the Lombardi.

Jake Browning is really, really bad. Like, on the same level as Bridgewater bad.
Remember the days when there were decent backups? Back then they were paid $5m.
Fitz was paid $5m/yr as a backup. He was among to best as a backup. I wish we could have a backup like that again. Or even a Blaine Gabbert, wohe was incapable of being a full time QB, but could at lease win a few games.
Jake Browning will not win games if Mayfield has to be pulled due to injury.
And you can better Baker knows that…so he will insist on staying in.

In the old days, most teams kept 3 QBs. The idea was to draft one around round 3 and devleop hin into a capable backup if your starter and #2 QB were locked in.
Back then, we also knew a QB could be ruined by being drafted to the wrong team. What if Tom Brady had been drafted by a team who already had a starting QB that would play for years? Other than the Patriots (who had Bledsoe)?
What if he’d never gotten that shot?
He may well have had the same carrer as Kyle Trask, who never got a shot.
Honestly, I would have trusted Trask more than Bridgewater or Browning. But he is a prime example of how being drafted to the wrong team can kill a career.

Wouldn’t be totally shocked if Connor Bazelak wins the opportunity to be the backup. I thought he looked very good in his preseason playing time last season. That said, I don’t attend practice, I don’t sit in on meetings, and I don’t have access to the locker room. So I can only go off what I’ve seen on the field.

The real reason Licht won’t bring in someone like Picket is he doesn’t want to have a QB controversy on his hands. Picket, like Baker on the right team, with a good scheme, might out play Baker. Licht, and the Bucs would rather have us pray Baker doesn’t go down, than to have us chanting we want to see what’s behind door number two. Hence the Teddy, Trask, Blazik, Browning, Daniels. Bucs have not invested seriously in the QB position since Baker.

Max. It will be a quartback in the first round next if your boy Baker play like he did last year. Baker has shown when games are in his hands in big games like playoffs and like last year against the saints, Panthers, Dolphins and Falcons he can’t win those types of games because he’s choked in every last one of them. But with the bar set so low with this fan base and franchise that’s a franchise quarterback only on teams like the bucs.

I think the greatest backup QB the Bucs ever had was Ryan Griffin. Dude never threw an interception in several seasons with the Bucs. . . His greatest accomplishment was escorting a drunken Tom Brady off the boat after the SB celebration on the river. Gotta hand it to that guy, he made millions holding a clipboard.

Signing Browning — and not a backup with starter potential — is both relatively inexpensive for the team and reflects that Mayfield will almost assuredly take 99% of the snaps, regardless of whether he’s injured. The team’s capital is better spent elsewhere than at backup QB.

Of the Qbs on the market this off season? I’ll take Browning all day long. Even over Flacco. Get him to play some heads up ball and we may have a dude who can come in and win a few games. These people with their very own podcast are almost always living in a different world. CBS and these experts who almost went to a game last year? Nah

I’m not sure if some of guys are serious about Daniels, kidding around, or just high as a kite while posting? The dude hasn’t played an NFL game yet and he’s waiting in the wings to be out QB 2 (or eventual starter!?). He’s an UFA who has shown some flashes in practice playing against Bowles defense (that makes most all backup QB’s look like future first ballot HoF’ers). Until we see otherwise he’s probably a guy who has enough athleticism to flash in a game or two until NFL D coordinators get some film on him and start finding his tendencies, and then the bloom will be off the rose. Pretty much like most all backup NFL QB’s honestly.

It’s certainly possible Beeej (and it would be great if he pans out for the Bucs), but all I’m saying is it’s definitely a tap the brakes, let’s wait and at least see what preseason games look like before we get too far ahead of ourselves anointing the young man as our future franchise QB (let alone even making the starting 52 this year). I think we can all agree it would be great if the Bucs can develop him into at least a quality backup (or more?). 👍🏻

Well we all know Baker’s ego is too fragile to have another legit QB on the roster to challenge him. So last year it was Teddy Bridgewater who was brought in, who had no business still playing in the NFL, and this year they got a guy that lost his job to a 40-year old with 2 days of practice.
