Albert Breer Suggests Bucs Fans Should Remain Calm
June 9th, 2026Joe can just envision Albert Breer popping up on Rich Eisen’s show this week to discuss Baker Mayfield’s comments on his potential new contract, and Breer pulling a Kevin Bacon in “Animal House.”
Breer noted that (on a technicality) the Bucs and Mayfield’s camp have yet to even engage in “negotiations.” The term “negotiations” is a two-way street, Breer points out. And the Bucs floated an offer to Mayfield’s agent and the Bucs haven’t received any sort of counteroffer. Of course, that may have changed.
Breer pointed out he would not be shocked at all if Mayfield signs an extension during training camp despite what Mayfield told reporters last week.
Why? Breer noted the Bucs have a history of signing star players to large extensions in August and September.
Mayfield said last week that as soon as training camp starts, that’s it. He’s not talking contract until the season ends.
Also, sure, Mayfield can set that deadline. But are we to believe that if the Buccaneers were to put what he wants on the table in, say, late August, that he’d say no on principle? That question is not arbitrary—it’s relevant because of how Tampa has recently done business.
Last year, Tampa extended right tackle Luke Goedeke on Sept. 2 and cornerback Zyon McCollum on Sept. 5. The year before, they inked left tackle Tristan Wirfs to a monster, five-year, $140 million extension in early August. The one outlier here would be the deal they did with safety Antoine Winfield Jr. in May 2024, but that one had to be done earlier because of the rules surrounding the franchise tag.
And yeah, that makes sense. If the Bucs offered Mayfield a deal he wanted in training camp, would he really cuss out his agent and tell him not to call back until February?
So in the great words of Chicago radio legend Mike North, “Take it easy!”

Fans are more concerned about Todd Bowels and the soul crushing LOSING SKIDS of 2024 and 2025
and
LIAM COEN leaving and keeping Todd . 500 Bowels
Jason Lite is at risk of losing Mayfield just as he did with Coen

If not Baker, then who will be QB? The Bucs won’t have a top ten draft pick next year – and rookie QB’s are a huge gamble that often doesn’t pay off. Maybe the Bucs could pick up a second-hand free agent QB, but I don’t read any names mentioned here. How about some names for guys to replace Baker because I don’t see the Bucs having a better option.

Coen 0-2 in playoffs. So far….
June 9th, 2026 at 7:59 am
The Bucs will have a top 10 draft pick next year and if not they can trade up. Also, there will be FA QBs available. Rumor has it that if the Bengals defense isnt good again this year then Burrow might want a trade. Thats something to look out for. Theres plenty of options besides Baker.

I think Kyle Trask will still be available.
I mean – we have yet to “see what he can do”.

If the Bucs were truly hedging their bet, they should trade AWJR and try to get another 1st round pick.
Next year’s draft will have way more QBs so they could trade up.
What they are doing doesn’t speak to that idea at all.
It’s always a wait and hope with Licht and company.
They don’t want to hurt Mayfield’s feelings, but they also don’t want to pay him Top 10 money.
Trading a player for another 1st round pick would tell Baker all he needs to know.
That’s the frustrating part with the Bucs Brass. They never make questionable moves and that is the best part of sports.
Licht definitely likes to operate behind the scenes. Unless he is talking about receipts.

Baker isn’t going anywhere. The Bucs love him, he loves the Bucs and there aren’t any better options. He reminds me of Jeff Garcia.
June 9th, 2026 at 8:17 am
I think the GM Bud Licht has lost his fastball. Losing Coen and then Evans to other teams is a huge red flag.
And to resign Bowles after the last two seasons was criminal misconduct.
Regardless of how I feel about Baker being the QB long term, he’s a veteran with experience and has successfully won the division twice. The NFC South is lousy and likely will be for a while. It’s the perfect spot for him.
If Licht can’t get this deal done and without breaking the bank, he should be shown the door.
He’s proven to be incapable of drafting a franchise QB. I don’t want him making that choice again, should we need to do so in 2027.

Baker’s arm is like twice as strong as Jeff Garcia’s LOL.

folks said the same thing about JW after he threw for 5k lol….and the answer was brady!!!…we’ll never know whats behind door #2 if we’re scared to close door #1…
bucs could swing a trade…who knows Lamar may be unhappy with his new HC and want out…Harbaugh may deal Hurbert if the price is right…he was winning games with alex smith and went to the SB with Kap…
i could see several options if bucs let baker walk…JL cant be scared
GO BUCS!!!!

Rumor has it that if the Bengals defense isnt good again this year then Burrow might want a trade…..Bee
It’s stupid comments like this that are polluting the Baker situation. Oh great, rumor has it. And with that we sh!t can one of the better QBs the Bucs have ever had. Was Ron Johnson better? He won a SB but was he better?
“i could see several options if bucs let baker walk…JL cant be scared”…..813
Here is another one equally dumb. “Who knows” Lamar Jackson/Justin Hurbert? Who knows, maybe Jack Thompson comes out of retirement and we sign him. Who knows? These guys don’t.

I don’t think Garcia sucked.

You think losing an injury-prone 33 year old receiver coming off a 30 catch 368 yard season is a red flag? Yes… actually it is…. It’s a red flag for you. You obviously have no clue what you’re talking about.

I believe you meant “Brad Johnson”. Yes, he was better. He beat Jeff Garcia and the 49ers badly, when Garcia was supposed to be in the top 3 of QB’s. Remember this is the same guy who was throwing bombs to Randy Moss and Chris Carter in Minnesota.

The situation here would be the same as Cincy for Burrow if we don’t get a new HC/GM.
