“Huge Windows All Over The Place Against This Defense”

October 29th, 2024

Hall of Fame quarterback Kurt Warner speaks.

This stood out to Joe because Hall of Fame quarterback Kurt Warner is not a hot-take artist and he’s a personal friend of Todd Bowles.

Remember, Bowles and the Bucs gave Warner’s son Kade a chance in training camp last year. He didn’t make the cut as a wide receiver and was cut this year from his XFL team.

Warner works for NFL Network and did a pregame Xs and Os breakdown of the Bucs defense Sunday.

Warner didn’t hold back. He seemed to be salivating as an ex-QB.

“They leave huge gaps on the back end of the field,” Warner said as he picked on a hole left by Anthony Nelson dropping in coverage unsuccessfully.

Warner picked on more plays and exclaimed. “There are huge windows all over the place against this defense.”

Yes, the Bucs will win on their blitzes at times, Warner said, but he he added that the options are there for QBs to win — and win big — against Tampa Bay.

Mahomes gonna carve Bucs defense up Monday night on national TV. In case you don’t know KC winning with run game and defense this season and not an aerial assault. PM throws for at least 300 and 3 tds against. Bucs are just what the doctor ordered to jump start KC pass gm.

  2. Casual Observer Says:

It does seem like that the opponents” WRs are too often too open. Poor coverage. Need to change D strategy during the game. Just my view.

  3. Baker Bowl Says:

Bucs are just what the doctor ordered to jump start KC pass gm.

Couldn’t agree more. KC really haven’t looked Super Bowl level (we all know they are) yet they are still undefeated. I’m terrified for this game to be honest because I think it’s the game that the Chiefs say “We’re back” and decimate us. Kelce going for 150+ on our backers and I can’t begin to imagine the damage that Worthy is going to do to our secondary.

This is the first time all season I have gone into a game already accepting the loss. Feels wrong. I just want to be happy again 🙁

  4. Bucsfan951 Says:

Welcome to Todd Bowles defense, everyone. We are 42 games (not including playoffs) into Todd being HC and he still has a coverage/defensive problem. When does it end?

  5. adam from ny Says:

if vi jones is not the answer, licht has got to make a pre-deadline trade to get a guy in here to split time with britt…

a rotational pass protection backer, that’s a vet, and easily adaptable, is out there to be had….find him…

it’s a “must add” addition before the deadline

  6. adam from ny Says:

    ^^^^^^

i think that’s more of a priority at this juncture than edge and wr

  7. Buc4evr Says:

Kind of makes me sick, everybody sees it but Bowles. Obviously the other teams see it and exploit it to the max, and Bowles is too stubborn to change. Poor talent and poor coaching……

  8. LakelandBuc Says:

Tyrek Funderburk were getting toast so much, Todd Bowles had to pull him for Josh Hayes. And Josh came in and glued up his man.

Everyone with any type of football knowledge knows that the Bucs has absolutely zero football talent on their defense outside of maybe 4 players. That leave them with huge vulnerability with the other 7 players. And they are mostly UDFAs, late round draft picks, players that made the roster as special teams players. One thing is definitely for sure….

This defense will NEVER improve until they get quality players

  9. First Name Greatest Says:

Watch opposing Quarterbacks against the Bucs then watch them the following week. They tend to not look as good as they do against the Bucs, this has been a trend since 2019, and longer, but let’s focus on Todd Blows, his coverage schemes are TRASH!!!!

The coverage has always been trash, it’s just compounded now as Licht failed to infuse any real talent or depth at MLB and Edge rush

  10. ocala Says:

Does not matter if the Bucs added TJ Watt and Joey Bosa to this defense, it would still stink. It is obvious even to fans that there are multiple wide open receivers on almost every pass play. Bowles scheme is no longer effective. It is time for him to go.

  11. First Name Greatest Says:

Bucs have 3 first round draft picks on their d line in Vita Vea, Kancey and JTS

Bucs have an All Pro Safety, highest paid safety ever

Bucs have a aging but Pro Bowl level LB in David

Other coordinators adjust and make improvements, where are Todd’s???

  12. Mike Johnson Says:

Bucs are going nowhere with Bowles. Its time for him to exit. We have an offense. Don’t waste it. Get a real Defensive guy in here next year and build this Defense.

  13. Bucnjim Says:

Adam, as I see it we’ve got 11 players on Defense completely failing. No one is making game-changing plays (Although Winfield tried) Every good defense has players that step up and say enough of this crap. I’ve yet to see it!

  14. Cobraboy Says:

He’s just reporting what fans also see.

    This D is pure fail.

  15. Buc4evr Says:

Lakelandbuc is correct. Other than Vea, LVD, Winfield, and maybe McCollum everyone else on the defense is a scrub. YaYa and Kancy may develop but they are not showing very much so far. As far as JTS and Hall these guys have been and are a total waste. Should have been cut two seasons ago. Why Bowles and Licht didn’t see this long ago is beyond me. Decade of defensive despair is back.

  16. David Kilmer Says:

I thinkit is a combination of 2 things. The Bucs with no pass rush and then the blitz to often to few results leaves the feild open.2, not enough talent in the secondary. It appears offensives have caught up to Bowles and he has not adjusted.

  17. Tbbucs3 Says:

Speaking of Anthony Nelson, the guy gets way too much playtime for someone who ho rarely makes plays

  18. Armybucsfan Says:

Thing is, like we’ve seen in the passed Bowles doesn’t change his scheme no matter how bad we are being beaten. His whole coaching scheme is so rudimentary that high school defensive players would be licking their chops daring the Bucs an to throw past 20 yards.

  19. Upstate NY BUC Says:

Please Mr. Licht, go get Giants Azeez Ojulari. Giants are done for the year!! Very active against the run and pass. Go Bucs

  20. Jeff Says:

Trash scheme. Like when the classic Tampa 2 defense was exploited time and time again. Need a new D coordinator which means we need a new HC.

  21. Jeffs grandpa Says:

Hey grandson go mow the grass and pick up your dirty underwear you lazy troll

  22. adam from ny Says:

i was upset when they let dee delaney go in the offseason…

he was a solid dude off the bench…

how much money was actually saved to let him go and have guys like funderburk and merriweather here ???

  23. adam from ny Says:

    TBbucs 3:

nelson is good as your 4th edge…

    and diaby is the 3…

just because yaya has a super cool name and wears a super chill number, doesn’t make him a #1 edge guy…he’s a 3

    we literally don’t have a 1 or 2…

and currently braswell and joe sho don’t really exist out there…joe sho has been a ghost for years now…and braswell is in the learning phase…

and ok, diaby is a borderline 2 or 3 if you have a guy like a miles garrett in the fold

  24. Baker Bowl Says:

just because yaya has a super cool name and wears a super chill number, doesn’t make him a #1 edge guy…he’s a 3

Don’t ruin my vibes man, Yaya Diaby is the name of all names

  25. Bucsfan81 Says:

Maybe we need to go back to some basics. It sounds like Bowles defense is over complicated and he is spending to much time trying to trick the offense into what he is running that his own damn defensive players have no clue what is going on. Maybe have pass rushers be pass rusher instead of dropping them off in coverage like they are DB. It really should not be this complicated.

  26. Bucsfan1011 Says:

I like how everyone on here refuses to acknowledge that our defense has been decimated by injury. Any team down that many starters and depth players will have trouble playing good defense.

  27. RandomBuc Says:

@First Name: not to split hairs but JTS was not a 1st rounder…top of 2nd but point still valid.

I hammered for an ILB in draft and its come back to bite us. we banked on Dennis rightfully so but he was injured.

Where is the K. Deloach(sp) guy from Florida State??? Undrafted FA

I still have faith we steal one of these next 2
    Go Bucs!!!

  28. Daniel Farmer Says:

Is there a chance Diaby is still not healed from that bad ankle sprain in camp?

  29. Joe Says:

I like how everyone on here refuses to acknowledge that our defense has been decimated by injury.

How has the defense played when it was healthy? Remember, the Bucs suffocated the Lions without Winfield, without Kancey and for the second half without Vea.

  30. Baker Bowl Says:

RandomBuc – Not trying to be a bum because I’m on the same page as you but unfortunately JTS was taken in the first, 32nd overall, should’ve been a UDFA though

  31. Baker Bowl Says:

And now you got me looking at the second round of that draft and am sad again. JTS and Trask as our 1&2 picks… sadness

  32. Daniel Z Says:

Yet again, the Bucs defense is going to be a “get right game” for an offense not playing up to its potential (I know KC is undefeated, but their passing game has been lackluster for most of this year).

  33. ElioT Says:

    Mahomes is going to feast.

Kelce is going to look 10 years younger.

    Another Prime Time embarrassment.

Another game close to the end of the Bowles regime.

  34. RandomBuc Says:

@BakerBowl: You are exactly right I stand corrected. I was confusing JTS with the Logan Hall pick. who we got at top of 2nd. trading out of the 1st round that year. JTS was our Superbowl winning 32nd pick. Way to keep us all honest!!

  35. RBUC Says:

PEOPLE WAKE UP!!! Bowles doesn’t have the power y’all think he does to decide who goes and when they go( he only stands at the podium, takes the heat, and defends the decisions of the organization)!! Bucs are rebuilding on the fly so seeing players like Logan Hall and JTS still on the field helps Jason Licht with the cap in the future. Every high priced penny they’re paying players like AWJ & Vea they’re saving when Bowles puts UDFAs on the field to play to level out the OVERALL spending!! Jason Licht refuses to bring in FAs cause they want the defensive side to bottom out, pick higher in the draft, and rebuild the defense with drafted studs cause AGAIN it’s cheaper and gives them more control over the player for a longer period of time! The Glazers sign off on it cause they are only 4 seasons removed from SuperBowl Champions- ITS ALWAYS THE BUSINESS SIDE U HAVE TO SEE👀!!

  36. Baker Bowl Says:

You are exactly right I stand corrected. I was confusing JTS with the Logan Hall pick

I don’t blame you at ALL, I actually had to double check because I was also thinking of Hall lmao. I took no pride in nit picking that correction, just a slow Tuesday at work unfortunately.

  37. Faspro Says:

Opposing QB’s are laughing at this bucs defense…

  38. adam from ny Says:

i know i love yaya and his name too…lol…

but when i take a deep breath and think very realistically, he is a #2 at best…at best at this point…

    on a superbowl contending team he’s a #3…

not trying to burst bubbles…we all love yaya 🙂

  39. adam from ny Says:

this team has some moxy and toughness…

granted they haven’t shown it the 2nd quarter of the season…

but it’s possible we go into kc like we did with jameis a few years back and walk out victors…

any given sunday can even happen on a monday…

don’t forget, we rock a death skull on our helmets!

  40. AllmanbrosBucs Says:

Please give any reasons for Bowles still being the HC….So called defensive guru and ranking among the worst with no improvement whatsoever…wasting offensive talent we do possess and not maximizing what our defense is somewhat capable of..hard to watch teams go up and down the field at will…nice guy but this is a business as well….gotta do something

  41. adam from ny Says:

we beat the 19-17 in a hard fought game in 2016 or 2017 if i remember correctly

  42. Bosch Says:

Can anyone name an edge rusher that Licht has drafted that was good enough to keep beyond their rookie contract? For that matter, front 7?

In reality, Licht is great in identifying o-line talent and overall decent evaluating offensive talent. But defense??? Worst in NFL.

  43. Bosch Says:

Or… maybe it is Bowles and not Licht making the call for defense draft picks.

  44. adam from ny Says:

sounds crazy and very speculative, but when “big sir”…sirvocea dennis was crashing into dudes with that bum azz shoulder of his, this defense was tight and crisp af…

the defense was looking wicked at that point…and my guy was beasting out there…and moving to the ball fast…

he was looking like he was gonna become a star too

  45. CChead Says:

Until Todd changes his philosophy from the soft zone, bend but don’t break BS. Things will not change. Opposing QB’s will light up the d at a 70+% completion percentage. And as they stand now, will surrender 400 combined yards per game. Go Bucs!

  46. Bosch Says:

RBUC – that was a very insightful post about the business side of things. Rebuilding on the fly is like threading a needle. And there is no way to do that without there being some holes somewhere. Why was the defense good against Detroit? It was early in the season. Now their holes have been exposed.

I’ll throw one other thing into the mix. Every time the Bucs are weakest division champs, they buy themselves a brutal schedule for the next season. That party is over.

  47. BuckyBuc Says:

Mahomes probably throws 6 TDs on monday against this defense

  48. A Bucs Fan Says:

Bowles is a system guy. There is no evolution or adaptation to his game.

  49. Tucker Says:

Where is this false narrative that the bucs suffocated the lions come from, they didn’t they had some crazy stats in that game they just didn’t execute in the Redzone.

  50. BucifUKnuck Says:

Lakelandbuc I need you to name names on the scrub defense.

  51. VOT Says:

5 years later it’s communication issues on D

The OC has been here 6 months and is lighting up the scoreboard

    Wonderful what the issue is???

    Hmmmmm…..

  52. ocala Says:

    Tucker you are exactly right.

Bucs gave up 463 yards to the Lions, but the Lions were not able to capitalize in the redzone. I will give the Bowles credit for doing enough on defense to keep the Lions out of the endzone to win that game, but giving up 462 yards of offense in the NFL is definitely not suffocating another team’s offense as Joe wrote.
Bowles has become arguably the worst defensive coach in the NFL and Joe and a few others are trying to defend him.
This defense has enough talent to at least be an average NFL defense, the problem is the scheme. Most passing plays there are multiple receivers wide open against this Bucs defense.

  53. Gipper Says:

It’s Mayfield’s fault. He should have had a long talk with Coach Bowles about the defense.

  54. Bucamania Says:

No worries. Vi Jones will save the day lol

  55. Ed Says:

They just need to tighten everything up. The spacing is all wrong. The Bucs defense is also really bad tacklers. There are so many plays where multiple Buc players don’t seal the deal and wrap up. Just way too many short completions where a tackle breaks down and no one else is near the play.

  56. PowerOfPewter Says:

If Bowles had hired a DC he could hold him accountable and make changes , thus avoiding the hot-seat as HC. However, Bowles married himself to the DC role… he schemed the defense, he picked his defensive assistants, he picked his players, he does the weekly game plan, he calls the plays on Sundays. None of it is working, and all paths lead to Bowles as the person ultimately responsible. He is either stubbornly unwilling to fix it, or at a complete loss at how to fix it. There’s 2 more games until the bye… if the Bucs are 4-6 following a home loss to a so-so Niner team, then Glazers have to step in and fire Bowles immediately after. Make Coen interim HC. Promote or hire a DC. They’d have 2 weeks to revamp the D before next game. Although the D has some holes in roster, there are plenty of good players that are simply not being put in positions to make plays to their strengths. There is no reason the D can’t be ‘average’, combined with a very good offense can go on a 6-1 run after the bye. Sticking with Bowles and limping home to a sub-.500 record is simply unacceptable.

  57. dumboldguy Says:

Without knowing a damn thing about anything you can have anybody watch every pass attempt and see that a whole lot of Bakers completions are into tight coverage. Almost none of our opponents are. If you break it down into covered, open but requiring a good throw and walkthrough open, most completions against are walkthrough open.

In the second half I would say we did a better job of being in a lot more situations of open but requiring a good throw. But not once were we in position to have a PD.

  58. Rod Munch Says:

    “Anthony Nelson dropping in coverage”

Nelson is one of the most lumbering “LB” that you’ll ever see. He’s like 6′ 7″ 290lbs and moves like it. He should never, ever, be dropping into coverage. Also he shouldn’t even be playing LB, he’s a DE.

A big part of the issue is the Bucs have all these ‘edge’ LB who all profile as 4-3 DEs. At LB they ran off Devin White and his 4.42 speed and replaced him with Britt who runs like a 5.42 (based off film), and they have zero depth on top of it. Said all offseason Britt was too slow to play in the NFL – and I was right. How in the world did the team not know this?

  59. Lightningvinny Says:

Pick Up Leslie Frazier or someone ,, Bowles needs a seasoned set of eyes and ideas to help

  60. View from 132 Says:

I never liked Warner because of the 99 Championship but I’m surprised he didn’t go into coaching. He’d probably make a good OC and had a ton of experience – World League, Arena…

  61. Rod Munch Says:

Screw Warner and his wife that looks like Mrs. Papadopoulos from Webster.

The Bucs should have won a SB in 99-00 and would have if the refs didn’t give that arena league reject bagboy a win.

  62. Tucker Says:

You could have filled the bucs stadium with fans that said Britt was too slow when they named him a kinda starter munch.

  63. First Name Greatest Says:

If you think the Bucs offense was scoring a TD against the Rams in 99 during the NFC Championship game you do not know the game

Bucs offense that day was pitiful and could not move the ball to save their life

  64. Deadwood South Dakota Says:

500 coach . Doesn’t have it..players now there is no consequences for poor play

If you think the Bucs offense was scoring a TD against the Rams in 99 during the NFC Championship game you do not know the game

Bucs offense that day was pitiful and could not move the ball to save their life

    ———-

Except for they were literally moving the ball, it was 4 down territory and they had a 3rd and short.

Instead the refs don’t even tell them the play is under review and they only find out after they move the ball coming out of a TV break. So the Bucs spent 3 minutes on the 3rd and 6, and instead it’s now 3rd and 19 and the play clock is running (it was 25 years ago so perhaps I’m off on the yardage, doing it by memory). The refs did the Bucs dirty, didn’t want a black head coach making it to the SB with a black QB.

That last part isn’t true, but the Bucs should have played the race card – the NFL would have at least given them an extra 1st round pick or something to shutup.

  66. August 1976 Buc Says:

Without a reliable defense, the offense will not carry this team to the playoffs. Soon 4-6……. after 10 games.
Double digit wins won now is like a long lost pipe dream now.

Its now every week, can they score enough to be competitive, let alone win because the defense cannot be relied upon to do their part.

If Baker is not perfect, and throws red zone int’s, it just kills any chance to win

So they need a perfect game every week from Bake to win, well, that is not going to happen every Sunday.

Tom Brady was not perfect every game and Mahomes is not now either.

So its the “Roller Coaster City Bucs” for the rest of the season

Take heart you can get Rolaids for your heart burn and acid indigestion at the local drug store

    GO BUCS!!!
