Jadeveon Clowney Lands In NFC South

March 27th, 2024

Panthers added edge help.

A 9 1/2-sack guy in the 2023 season will be chasing Baker Mayfield this fall in NFC South action.

Veteran Jadeveon Clowney, the 2014 No. 1 overall pick who played for the Ravens last season, inked a two-year deal with the Carolina Panthers. Various reports today say Clowney, 31, will earn $20 million plus incentives over those two seasons.

A former Mayfield teammate in Cleveland, Clowney was perhaps the last established quality pass rusher on the 2024 free agent market. Others (cough) may be available via trade.

The Bucs could use help at edge rusher, unless you’re among the crowd that gets all jacked up when they watch Joe Tryon-Shoyinka and Anthony Nelson pin their ears back on third downs.

Joe firmly expects the Bucs to draft an edge rusher with a premium pick next month.

While Clowney had injury issues through much of his career, the three-time Pro Bowler played every game last season.

And he never had double digit sacks in any season of his 10 years in the league. Pretty sure he’s not going to do it now.

  2. Irishmist Says:

What are the odds I wonder that Markees Watts will have more sacks than Clowney next season? If they are better than 5 to 1, I’d take that bet.

  3. ElioT Says:

    From Brian Burns to Clowney!

Glad the panthers paid him and not us….

  6. A Bucs Fan Says:

Oft injured inconsistent rusher. You never know which Clooney you’ll get on the field. The Bucs need someone to add to the mix but I’m not worried about Clowney who has under performed his entire career.

I’d rather read about Monte Kiffin’s award.

  7. Cobraboy Says:

Speaking of Barret, I now have something 100% in common with him.

I ruptured my left Achilles on Saturday, and will now have surgery next week.

    Growin’ old ain’t fer sissies.

  8. Scott Says:

^shaq was not a starter for a few seasons either

  9. Steven007 Says:

Cobra, sorry to hear it. Tore my bicep a year and a half ago. Still trying to regain muscle lost from atrophy. But about 90% of the way there. Good luck.

  10. NCBuc Says:

    @ Cobra
Feel your pain man! I did the same many years ago and have had both knees surgically repaired. Back when I was 32, my doctor said I had 70 year old man knees lol. Wish you a quick recovery

  11. sweti_yeti Says:

Clooney was never going to Tampa. He just doesn’t fit the team culture they’ve worked to develop. Mercenaries not welcome. I’m guessing they had even less interest in Clowney than they do in trading for Reddick.

  12. The Fighting Schianoes Says:

I can’t believe this guy went first overall. I also lost a 100 dollar bet on that.

  13. Rick Says:

We are not one or two pieces away from a super bowl. We are one of two years away with adding a few more young pieces through the draft. Kudos to Licht for staying away from moves like this one.

  14. Duane in Sanford Says:

Clowney isnt going to move the needle, and its a drop in the bucket for what the Panthers got rid of in the off season. Wishing a speedy recovery to Cobraboy.

  15. D Cone Says:

Panthers gave up 4th fewest yards in 2023. Defense can afford to possibly take a downgrade at that one position if it saves 14 to 20 million over the next two seasons.

Defense was definitely not the issue with the Panthers.

If they can field anything that resembles an offense they might turn the team around pretty quick.

#1 overall pick, on his 6th team now in 10 years? That’s fishy. Pass.

  19. Cobraboy Says:

@Steven: tore my bicep 24 years ago. No fun. My only advice is to attack the rehab.

Which is my plan for the Achilles.

Irony: I had rotator cuff surgery 9 weeks ago and just finished the main part of rehab…and now this? WTF?

  20. Crickett Baker Says:

The Panthers got a bunch of stuff from us, including strategy. IDK why no one seems worried about them. Without all our stuff we barely beat them last year. Is no one (but me) concerned?

  21. BPBucsfan Says:

Seems like there’s zero urgency on the pass rush. It’ll be a long season with no pass rush.

  22. JimBobBuc Says:

Free agency is tough when you’re cap constrained. Seems like everyone else is making moves but us. Other than Whitehead, it seems like we’re the same team as last year. Our upcoming rookies need to get on the field and make the team better (IOL, Edge). Last year’s rookies need to attack the offseason and step up this year.

  23. Shane Callahan Says:

Cobra: Sux getting old, sorry Bro. I had to quit playing softball because I got seriously injured every season.

  24. Boss Says:

    @cricket

The kitties will be good. They already have the D and we got lucky beating them when they were already on vacation. The kitties and hawks will feast on pirates this year.

  25. Shane Callahan Says:

Boss: You’re on the wrong site, troll. Back to Cobra’s unfortunate injury. Another thing that sux about getting old, I had to quit coaching HS wrestling when the heavier weights started hurting me when I wrestled them. 😒

  26. unbelievable Says:

Damn cobra and steven you’re at least making me feel a little better about tearing a labrum in my hip.

Haven’t schedule surgery though since the pain isn’t too bad.

Tore my labrum in my shoulder many years ago, and then my entire shoulder froze after surgery… so that was fun. Attacked rehab like a mofo to avoid having another surgery on it.

  27. BUCman Says:

Clowney views himself as a gun for hire. He has no team loyalty. Not what I want in a locker room. He shouldn’t scare anyone at this point in his career.

    What a great bucs fan

  31. SlyPirate Says:

    BUC KILLER! …

In 2 Games vs the Bucs Clowney recorded a total of … wait for it …

    .5 sacks.

That was probably vs our currently unemployed ex-LT. Clowney peaked in college.

  32. ScottyMack Says:

I was all for the Bucs picking up Clowney for about half what the Panthers are going to pay him. Not all too unhappy that the Panthers have him and are worsening their cap situation by overpaying him.

  33. Dave Pear Says:

Todd is such a defensive genius, he knows he can craft a zone scheme that can thrive even without a pass rush. It’s obvious. I mean Desmond Ridder and Gardener the Chauncey Minschew disembowlesed the genius with 2 minutes left in the game.

    Oops.

  34. Ed Says:

Last 10 years Bucs have had 8 #1’s. It isn’t an exact science, for sure but the drafting of “needs” over best player available isn’t saying much for what the Bucs have gained by these picks. Certainly Evans and Wirfs are Platinum level
once-in-a-draft talents. The others? Meh. Just don’t “reach” anymore.

    2013 no pick
2014 needed WR’s drafted Mike Evans w pick #7 YES! HOF BOUND!
2015 needed QB’s drafted Jameis Winston w pick #1 OH NO! TURNOVERS!
2016 needed DB’s drafted Vernon Hargreaves w pick #11 DISASTER! REACHED
2017 needed TE’s drafted OJ Howard w pick #19 WEAK! REACHED
2018 needed DL’s drafted Vita Vea w pick #12 GOOD PART TIME PLAYER
2019 needed LB’s drafted Devon White w pick #5 DISASTER! REACHED
2020 needed OL’s drafted Triston Wirfs w pick #13 ELITE SUPERSTAR!
2021 needed edge drafted Joe Tyron w pick #32 SOFT SPECTATOR! REACHED
    2022 no first round pick,
2023 needed DL drafted Calijah Kancey w pick #19 TOO SOON BUT PROMISING

  35. Proudbucsfan Says:

ED I wouldn’t say Devin White was a disaster he did play at a high level for the first 3 years of his contract and helped us win a Super Bowl so his Draft status was warranted we just didn’t want to give him a second contract because he has major mental issues.

  36. Buckeyebuckchuck Says:

Can’t stay healthy, had 1 or 2 good years, blames CLE featuring Myles Garrett for his lack of productivity there. Perfect fit for Carolina, let Brian Burns go out the door and bring in a “name” to whip up the fan base

  37. Jvato24 Says:

    Stay healthy everyone!
