How Safe Is Joe Tryon-Shoyinka?

March 29th, 2024

Joe Tryon-Shoyinka

Joe is now so desperate for the Bucs to find an edge rusher, Joe is dumpster diving on other team’s rosters trying to find someone, anyone, who can get to a quarterback.

It’s driving Joe absolutely bananas. And the Bucs wonder why some folks outside the Tampa Bay area won’t take them seriously? Well, it’s really hard to take a team seriously that doesn’t take the most important position on defense seriously.

Over at BucsWire.com, Luke Easterling cobbled together his projection of the Bucs starting roster for 2024. He listed the Bucs’ starting left guard as an incoming rookie.

On the Bucs defense, Easterling has no surprises, unless you are surprised that the Bucs will start Joe Tryon-Shoyinka at edge rusher. Look, Joe has nothing personal against JTS. He works hard and is a nice guy. The Bucs’ first-round pick in 2021 is just not the answer. Not remotely so.

Of course Joe hopes JTS breaks out this year. Just like Joe hopes to win Powerball tomorrow night and hopes to come home to find Kate Upton waiting for him with open arms.

Which of those three hopes do you think happens?

One reason Bucs sacks king Shaq Barrett blew up in 2019 and was damn good in 2020 is because he had Jason Pierre-Paul on the other side of the defense. JPP was both feared and respected.

Do you think any team fears JTS?

Second year edge rusher YaYa Diaby is going to be on his own island without an upgrade. He is unlikely to get much if any help from JTS.

And people actually wonder why Joe is so mental for Haason Reddick.

You don’t need pass rushers if you’re just going to sit back in a super soft sloppy zone. Just wait until offenses look absolutely befuddled when the Bucs drop 8 on every passing down. After years of hearing about those so-called exotic blitzes – and now it’s just 3 rushers, and 8 guys cemented in place in “coverage” standing around like a lawn chair. That’s the Bowles 2024 defense, calling it now.

Thank God!! Now we KNOW its not going to happen (just like all the other things you called wrong).

  5. NCBuc Says:

This Joe loves him some pass rush! Don’t get me wrong, JPP was a great trade for our Bucs, but he was so hot and so cold throughout his career. I mean he averaged 6.71 sacks a season. Might be 8 if I take out his last two years. Only a few times did he have double digit sacks.

  6. Proudbucsfan Says:

Like you said Joe, JTS is a hard worker and a nice guy but that won’t put quarterback butts on the ground. IMHO he needs to find another career or try out for tight end.

    Manic obsession is weird 👀

Not sure that I can take another season of watching JTS running around like a scared rabbit.

  9. MelvinJunior Says:

Yeah, there is no one… Who’s worth-it, anyway. And, trading for Reddick is NOT leading anyone to suddenly start taking The Bucs “seriously” There’s no one available who’s really moving any needle. Giving up major assets, THE extending Reddick at 4rs/$100MIL is an ‘all-in’ type of move & The Bucs are 💯 NOT in ‘all-in’ mode right now, or anywhere even CLOSE. It would be a “Bills – Von Miller” type of a deal, but MUCH WORSE even, since the Bills didn’t have to give-up anything in return. But, then he TEARS His ACL. So, how’d THAT workout for them. I thought it was a DUMB move then, given his age, etc. Was really shocked with the money, too!!!! Just waaaayyy too big of a risk. And, I believe just that move right there alone, gives JL and EVERY other GM & FO in the entire LEAGUE, reason to pause… A VERY Good Reason. I’d say there’s your reason as to ‘why’ Reddick is STILLLLLL there, left dangling with NO takers. Cause, NO ONE (at least at the moment) is interested in all THAT. Smart.

    SB what is tomorrow night?

I got bad intel on a Reddick trade that was supposed to happen today. Obviously my bad.

joe is correct, it’s a gaping hole in the defense right now

Still wonder why Joe is so obsessed with Reddick when it’s clear to everyone else why the Bucs aren’t interested.

  13. Buchead Says:

Dude, do you not understand that there is a NFL draft in April and that it will include EDGE rushers? Do you not know that there will be more NFL trades during and following the draft? Nobody wants your stank-ass Hassan Redneck. If he was worth signing, we would have signed him. You praise Jason Licht all the time. Do you not think that he has a plan? My gosh, enough already!

  14. admin Says:

Dude, do you not understand that there is a NFL draft in April and that it will include EDGE rushers?

Surely you understand that rarely do rookie edge rushers dominate. At least guys not named “Bosa.”

Additionally, the Bucs have done so well over the decades drafting edge rushers. When was the last defense edge rusher the Bucs drafted, Lee Roy Selmon? (Seriously.)

  15. Joe Says:

Still wonder why Joe is so obsessed with Reddick when it’s clear to everyone else why the Bucs aren’t interested.

Fill Joe in why the Bucs wouldn’t want a guy who has no less than 11 sacks in each of the last four years. Because Joe has no earthly idea why. There is no logical reason other than the Bucs do not value edge rushers.

  16. SlyPirate Says:

    SUPPLY AND DEMAND
I expect Hall, JTS, Yaya, and CK to all improve this year … especially CK. Licht is waiting for the draft to a) see if he gets a premier pass rusher, and b) to see what other teams draft pass rushers and might want/need to unload a vet.

The more pass rushers that are out there and the less you need one reduces the cost. It’s savvy.

  17. adam from ny Says:

drafted edges take time to work there way into the system and get up to speed with the nfl game…

yeah we need to draft an edge or DE…whatever you want to call it these days…

    but…

we need to pick up an experienced one as well..somehow, someway…

yaya is promising and has no realtime experience…and what if hits that 2nd year wall…?

and joe sho was clearly demoted last season – so why would you promote him back to starter ???…because you have no edge guys
???…doesn’t sound like a good plan moving forward…

i trust in the front office to fill in the defensive gap…

they know what they’ve got in joe sho already…

might he surprise with 7 or more sacks this year?….maybe, but it’ll probably be more like 4-6 sacks

  18. MelvinJunior Says:

I just couldn’t get over the Bills handing a 32-year old Von Miller, 6-YEARS ($120M)… SIX. I think they might have just ‘renegotiated’ it tho (at least the $$$), for this season!!!! It’s going to be another ‘bend but don’t break’ defensive scheme again this season, so I’m not worried. Be nice having ‘that guy’ who can get pressure and create those big ‘splash’ plays on 3rd Down tho… Maybe, Good Ol’ JTS & YaYa Both, Come Into Camp Fully Healthy, In ‘Tip-Top’ Shape, & HANGRY This Season… And, Work Well TOGETHER, While Creating Some CHAOS/HAVOC. It’s ‘Their’ Time.

  19. adam from ny Says:

do they secretly believe they have a 12-15 sack “secret weapon” in watts, just waiting in the wings?…………probably not…

and what about ramirez………..yeah he’s a good local story…but does he even make the team…

or more so…does he even make the PS

  20. teacherman777 Says:

But Hainsey who get pushed into the backfield is fine.

Hainsey who is the worst ranked center in the NFL is fine.

Hainsey who gets zero push is fine.

Again. I think the defense of Hainsey is based on race. Not performance.

Because there is no way Hainsey is a better player than JTS.

JTS made some big plays this year.

He just needs 4 more years of weight training.

  21. HC Grover Says:

    Bowles loves Plan 0.

  22. Defense Rules Says:

Joe … ‘There is no logical reason other than the Bucs do not value edge rushers.’

How can you say that Joe? Lee Roy Selmon? Simeon Rice? Jason Pierre-Paul? Shaquil Barrett? We’ve had some pretty darned good ones over the years. Of course we ‘value’ edge rushers; we just don’t seem capable of drafting them (after Lee Roy of course) then developing them (maybe had something to do with our ‘coaching carousels’?).

The latter 3 all had 1 thing in common: they benefitted from playing with some GRRREAT TALENT. You remember Joe; guys like Warren Sapp & Vita Vea & Ndamukong Suh. Heck, even Lee Roy had several fairly decent NTs & DEs around him over the years.

I’m confident that the Bucs DO value edge rushers, but that they have to be surrounded by quality talent to really allow them to shine. Shaq convinced me that with Suh & JPP & Vea in there, he was a clear threat. Without that beastly complementary support though, he couldn’t drive the train. But he made a great ‘scavenger’ though who feeds well off others.

Reddick IMO is that same guy. Philly had a pretty decent DLine to complement him over these past couple years. Guys like Fletcher Cox, Brandon Graham, Javon Hargrave, Josh Sweat, Jalen Carter. Bucs don’t have that. Eagles BTW had 70 sacks in 2022, but dropped down to 43 in 2023 after losing Hargrave & the production of the others dropped off considerably under their new DC. I’ll put my trust in our own DC that he can find ways to cobble together enough pass rush to keep our defense competitive this year.

Perhaps the bucs brass see things we don’t, perhaps they see darby 2. His brother from another mother! Just sayin… stranger things have happened ya know.

  24. heyjude Says:

I am feeling that JL has a plan for an edge rusher, and possibly not being Reddick. Thinking, he may be leaning toward the draft too. Hopefully one or the other.

Unfortunately, Verse and Latu may go too early for our Bucs, but there are others in the draft. Trice, Chop Robinson, …

  25. Capt.Tim Says:

    With you on this one,Joe
Keep on it, somebody at OneBuc needs to prioritize getting a QB stalker in our line up!

  26. Scott Says:

He doesn’t get a lot of sacks but is somewhat productive. Better than A Nelson

  27. Bucs Guy Says:

I believe there a few issues here:
    1) Bucs salary cap – Eagles would have to pay part of this year’s salary
    2) Bucs don’t want to give up a 2024 pick – maybe this happens after the draft
    3) Riddick desire for a new $25M/yr deal – Not worth a 4-year deal at that amount.
So what would it take? 2025 3rd round pick with Eagles paying at least half of this year’s salary. Bucs decide to not give Riddick a new contact and make him play on a prove it deal or sign him to a deal w/o guaranteed money and heavy on incentives (50%). Riddick probably wouldn’t go for that though.

  28. Bucs since 76 Says:

No team is going to trade for Reddick until the draft. Why trade for a player who wants a long term contract in the range of 20 million a year. When you maybe able to draft a defensive end in the draft who would be under a rookie contract for 5 years. However, Reddick would be a proven option but we just cut Barrett who is about the same age due to injury problems.

  29. Jeffs grandpa Says:

But jpp was out most of 2019 with a broken neck if im not mistaken so

  30. geno711 Says:

Maybe Joe knows more about Haasan Reddick than the rest of the NFL world.

Seems more like his career path is closer to Shaq Barrett than Khalil Mack.

I mean there are plenty of guys that flash in the NFL for 3 or 4 years in sacks.

    Barrett
    Melvin Ingram
    DeMarcus Lawrence

I just think Reddick falls into the Barrett group more than the TJ Watt group.
If you are thinking of him being good 1 or 2 more years fine. But more than that seems just like an overreach.

  31. SC Bucs Fan Says:

They do have therapy groups for this obsession

  32. dmatt Says:

How bout we give the Panthers JTS for a FA😝. He had 5 sacks last year, whoa, he’s beast mode.😧 I have no clue what Bowles see in him.
    2 sacks against Bears
    1 sack against Colts
    1 sack against Panthers
And, luckily, 1 sack against Lions

We are wasting time n money on this guy. A zebra don’t change its colors. If it runs like a duck n plays like a duck, then it’s a duck. Is JTS related to Bowles?

  33. ChiBuc Says:

Joe: ” Joe hopes to win the Powerball lottery tomorrow night and hopes to come home to find Kate Upton waiting for him with open arms.

Which of those three hopes do you think happens?”

I’d say of those options, JTS has the best odds for a breakout season. Nice! Great, yet abstract, way to put a positive spin on our edge rush

  34. jugheadfla Says:

Ummm…….I would interject that Micah Parson’s pretty much dominated his rookie year, so I would disagree that a rookie pass rusher can’t get it done

  35. George R Says:

Trade 3 rd pick for Riddick, draft a edge in the first round. Riddick balls out in a contract year. Signs a big contract in 2025. Bucs get a 3rd comp pick. Bucs rookie edge is ready to step in year 2.

  36. Beeej Says:

Bucs are sticking to the Plan. No more ‘all-in’, millions for players who will only be around a year or two. They are determined to get the production on Re**** out of a dude on a rookie salary

    __________

    Brian Burns comes to mind.

  38. Biff Barker Says:

Trade JTS? Who’s going to take a suckers bet?
Now the last excuse was to many responsibilities?
Cut this POS now. Keeping a wasted pick on the roster is all ego and not logic. So, who is boing to run into the play after its over now?

  39. Esteban85 Says:

Mental is definitely the word I was thinking, Joe. They may not fear JTS but I bet teams start fearing Kancey coming from all sorts of different angles. Dude is gonna blow up next season but I’m with you in that JTS will most likely not. Draft edge and we have at least some of that four letter word you hate. H*pe

  40. Dave Pear Says:

JTS is a spastic headless chicken, and combining that with the lack of coaching, he’s a disaster. Bye bye.

  41. Buccup Says:

Joe, aren’t you concerned that 1-) Reddick is available in the first place, and 2-) That he hasn’t moved on to any other team yet?

    What are the negatives?

  42. Not Says:

As soon as JTS hyphenated his name after thedraft we should have known he would be a bust.
