Dave Canales Hopes Baker Mayfield Breaks The Bank With Bucs

March 7th, 2024

Former Bucs OC weighs in.

Dave Canales is a big Baker Mayfield guy. And Joe doesn’t blame him.

Remember, it is largely because of Mayfield that Canales is the head coach in Carolina. And Canales hopes Mayfield is rewarded.

Of course, Canales in his lone NFL season as an offensive coordinator pretty much saved Mayfield’s career. Mayfield’s days as a starter were on thin ice when he came to the Bucs last March.

Then Mayfield went from seeing his career on the brink to winning a playoff game and being named Pro Bowl MVP.

Yesterday, the face of FanDuelTV, Kay Adams, took her weekday show “Up and Adams” to Carolina as the Stinking Panthers and the gambling house Adams works for had a new money-making scheme to celebrate.

There, Adams interviewed Canales. She asked him about Mayfield and told Canales he must be in an awkward position wanting to see Mayfield get paid but also not wanting him back with the Bucs. On the contrary, Canales said. He wants Mayfield to make so much cash in Tampa that Team Glazer needs to take out a loan to cover Mayfield’s salary.

Why is Canales so generous? Well, Canales explained that if Mayfield eats up enough of the Bucs salary cap, Team Glazer won’t have the loot to buy more players.

It’s all in the video below.

When Joe talked to Canales in Indianapolis last week, Joe sincerely wished him great success — only 15 times a year.

Canales and Baker deserve the best. Thank you both.
    LCG Mr. Licht!
    You got this!!!

Joe … ‘Why is Canales so generous? Well, Canales explained that if Mayfield eats up enough of the Bucs salary cap, Team Glazer won’t have the loot to buy more players.’

Hmmm, why is it that what’s sooo obvious to other NFL coaches (impact of overpaying for any 1 player) seems to elude sooo many Bucs’ fans? Sure, let’s pay Baker whatever he wants, then watch him fail miserably because the TEAM around him isn’t competitive in today’s NFL. (Oops, sarcasm font – off).

  4. Viktor Saint Claire Says:

Canales is a doooosh. I hope he sets a new NFL record for the most losses ever.

  5. TDTB Says:

Unfortunately, this die was cast when they started Mayfield over Trask. Between Baker’s ego and the money he’s lost to family members they had to expect him to want big bucks if he had success. If he sucked, then they were left with Trask on a one year deal. The only way starting Mayfield over Trask made any sense was if they had a second year option on Mayfield. Since they didn’t, they’re now in the same place they were last year at this time with the exact same questions; 1) is Trask the guy, 2) do they sign FA QB, or 3) do they draft a QB. They wasted a year. Baker did okay to good, but he never played great. How many batted balls were there? How many times did he miss receivers? How many times could he not even see the open man because he couldn’t see over the offensive line? I didn’t think Trask was ever going to be “the guy” coming out of school. I would not have drafted him. However, since they did, it was a huge mistake to not play him last year (just as it was a mistake to give Brady his Gabbert security blanket – How much more prepared would Trask be if he had been on the bench sitting in on the Brady/Coach discussions after each series). The organization catered to Brady and then appeased Bowles instead of making decisions that were best long term.

  6. Bojim Says:

    Shut up Dave.

  7. BillyBucco Says:

So here is a guy who coached Baker seeing the writing on the wall.
I hope Atlanta does it, because Canales won’t need help losing with that team all on his own. You think this division was bad last year? It could be shaping up to be the envy of the NFL. This is why I believe Cousins might take less than even Baker to play here.

  8. Dubcity Says:

Carolina can always overpay for him if they want

  9. Suffering Since 76 Says:

Canales is now the enemy. It’s not like the guy was here for years. Beat it, Dave.

  10. Capt.Tim Says:

Guys worried about Jason Licht managing Team Glazers Billions.
    Awwww.
Dont worry fellas. Mr.Licht has proven EXTREMELY COMPETENT in managing The Glazers moola.
Plus Hes smart enought to know that the game isnt saving money.
The game is to WIN THE SUPERBOWL! Licht and the Glazers have already won one. The Glazers have won 2?
And they all know that YOU DONT WIN SUPERBOWLS WITHOUT A QUARTERBACK!, AND QUARTERBACKS COST MONEY.

All of you wringing your hands about the Glazers money can relax.
They got this.and while you guys are wringing your hands over their money, they are preparing to give Mayfield a contract for 40 mil a year.
And they are all having lunch together today. And their lunch will cost more than you make in 3 months

  11. Capt.Tim Says:

I hate it when some of us start playing Accountants.
    Hang it up guys.
You have no fing idea how to manage million dollar deals, or managing a salary cap.

If you did, you’d be rich, too. And wouldnt be posting here.

Give it a rest, huh. You might as well be worrying about the rocket boosters on the next SpaceX launch.
Or how Elon Musk is gonna finance the flight

  12. Boomer Says:

Canales just proved he’s not the guy he pretends to be.

Should have kept his mouth shut about a team that gave him a chance to call plays and run an offense.

Never a Canales fan and can’t wait for his ego to do him in.

  13. Capt.Tim Says:

. Cincinnati Bengals QB Joe Burrow: $55 million
    2. Chargers QB Justin Herbert: $52.5 million
    3. Ravens QB Lamar Jackson: $52 million
    4. Eagles QB Jalen Hurts: $51 million
    5. Broncos QB Russell Wilson: $49 million
    6. Cardinals QB Kyler Murray: $46.1 million
    7. Browns QB Deshaun Watson: $46 million
    8. Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes: $45 million
    9. Bills QB Josh Allen: $43 million
    10. Rams QB Matthew Stafford: $40 million
    10. Cowboys QB Dak Prescott: $40 million
    10. Giants QB Daniel Jones: $40 million

Just to give you a clue. The rest of the QBs arent far behind these guys.
Relax. The Glazers have the Money. Jason Licht knows how to spend it( far better than you), and the Bucs know how to win a Superbowl.
    It’ll work out.

  14. Dubcity Says:

Lol ^^^ this implies Baker is gonna win a Superbowl. Last year was Baker in his Physical prime.. don’t expect much improvement.. expect someone that gets hit a ton… remember that he limped into the playoffs and forced himself to play hurt the last games of the season.. that bodes well for Trask, cause that pounding Baker takes is not a recipe for long term success… Jason Litch is smart. Offering 25 mil a year.. that is smart… for 2 to 3 years max.. if Baker isn’t even as good as FA Kirk Cousins per the entire NFL, then that’s telling me he’s not good enough. Period.. and a long term investment is an investment in complacency.. in expecting to not win a Superbowl cause he’s gonna do little to nothing against good teams… ask the Lions.. they’re hoping for more Mayfield in the playoffs

  15. Dreambig Says:

Lol Capt Tim, you are so right! My favorite is when posters throw out contract numbers that they would be “OK” with. Cracks me up everytime.

  16. Joe in Michigan Says:

TDTB: I’m sorry the Bucs ruined your dreams by winning the division, making the playoffs, and winning a playoff game.

  17. SlyPirate Says:

Canales is a salesman. Everyone talks about him as a morale guy. No one talks about his football acumen. Mr Run First = 31st ranked rushing attack.

“It’s because my system is so complex it takes time.” People buy it. He’ll fail. Eventually he’ll be exposed but he’ll spin it and hold on to his job for a few more years. Just watch.

Carolina got a con artist for a coach. Carolina is doomed.

  18. ATLBUC Says:

Baker knows this is his last opportunity to cash in and thinks he’s worth $40M. He said he’s not gonna take a home town discount. Jenna Laine said the two sides are not close. Canales left because Bowles forced him to start Baker. He didn’t even THINK about bringing Pro Bowl kickball MVP to Carolina nor did he THINK about staying here and let Baker guide him to a superbowl.

  19. Bucs Guy Says:

Interesting that only 4 of the top 12 paid QBs have won a SB and only 1 other has been to a SB. So 7 of 12 have never been to a SB.

  20. adam from ny Says:

    yeah back to canales…geez…

he was just about ready to get fired when somehow, unbeknownst to him, the team turned it around…

and that was more because of the players than said dude…

gonna be fun to watch him wiggle his way thru 3 years of pressers as close to the worst team in football…

after one year’s tenure, when you’re a lifetime fan of a team – it’s hard to get super attached to any players or personnel – because a year is simply a pitstop…

and i like baker – but that includes him as well…

he’s number 6 in the playbook, but not number one in our hearts just yet

  21. geno711 Says:

    1. Cincinnati Bengals QB Joe Burrow: 98.6 passer rating
    2. Chargers QB Justin Herbert: 95.7
    3. Ravens QB Lamar Jackson: 98.0
    4. Eagles QB Jalen Hurts: 91.1
    5. Broncos QB Russell Wilson: 100.0
    6. Cardinals QB Kyler Murray: 92.2
    7. Browns QB Deshaun Watson: 100.8
    8. Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes: 103.5
    9. Bills QB Josh Allen: 92.2
    10. Rams QB Matthew Stafford: 91.0
    10. Cowboys QB Dak Prescott: 99.0

Everyone of those quarterbacks has a higher passer rating in their career than Baker Mayfield.

Only he and Daniel Jones in your list had passer ratings in the 80’s.
Personally, as a Bucs fan, I don’t want to pay Daniel Jones money.
Maybe you think the Giants spent well on Daniel Jones.

  22. Allen Lofton Says:

Dave Caneles is in for a rough 2024 season and an impatient owner.

  23. Beeej Says:

Did Wilson win a SB? Only two others on that have have

  24. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

Canales did pretty well with what he was handed – a mercurial QB, an RB who is really a receiver, a revamped O-line and all of whom were pretty demoralized by the previous play-caller. And, of course, a boss whose idea of offense is not synchronized with most of the NFL. So, all in all not bad.

  25. Buc4evr Says:

Hope Canales gets a big dose of reality in Carolina. The guy talks a big game but is a terrible play caller. It will be interesting to see how he does with that crazy owner.

  26. Lord Cornelius Says:

I’ll always have love for Canales.

I thought it was a pretty bad situation going to Carolina at first glance, but upon further review the Panthers had a pretty decent defense last year which kept them in a ton of games. Their offense was historically horrific, but the D wasn’t bad especially considering how horrific the offense was.

Really weird statistical split though – top 3 in yards given up per game, but bottom 5 in points given up per game.

Top 6 in YPA given up. Top 6 in passing yards given up. 5th in INT. Top 4 in passing TD’s given up per game. 12th in yards per carry given up.

But last in rushing TD’s. What a weird season they had lol.

Carolina was also top 7 in time of possession. It’s like they did everything possible to keep games low scoring and hold possession and dink/dunk but still, they only averaged 13.9 points per game. In 2023 that’s insane lol.

That’s not only the lowest average of 2023, that’s the lowest average of the last decade+. Arizona in 2018 was at 14.1. Rams in 2016 at 14. Every other year I looked at was like 15-16+ for the worst team in the league typically.

At least the bar is set EXTREMELY low in terms of what he has to do to show improvement. But that doesn’t change the fact that he has a #1 overall picked QB who looked out of place and rattled all year, behind a bad O-line, without any elite weapons whatsoever.

In terms of talent to work with, he has downgraded significantly from the 2023 Buccaneers.

  27. T. McGee Says:

Male model playing a coach on TV. Clown.

  28. Lord Cornelius Says:

It’s crazy how bad the Carolina trade up looks now. If Caleb Williams ends up being the first legit QB in Chicago, then that will go down as like one of the top front office moves in franchise history.

  29. K2 Says:

Canales is right! Brady won many Super Bowls because he understood that football is the ultimate team sport. If you take the most money you can get your team will be weak. So, Brady always took compensation below his worth…so the team could win! So, now we find out if Baker just wants to get paid or he wants to be on a winning team.

  30. Boss Says:

canales can’t wait to face baker and reap three int’s.

we barely beat them last year lol

  31. Stewie1960 Says:

I read this Crap about having Baker as a franchise QB. Some write that you have to win a SB to be a Elite QB. Well there is 7 QBs in 2023 that have started and won a SB. So that Logic is crap. The Eagles won with Foles and the Ravens won with Dilfer. We’re they Elite, I think not. Football is a team sport. Cousins has never won a SB. He is pretty consistent in his numbers, but hasn’t won. Baker take 30 mil per year with incentives and sign for 4 years. That way we can sign out and keep the Band Together

  32. Marky Mark Says:

Finally some one who us not trying save money for some billionairebois with 2 footy teams valued at 3.5 B each.

    ……..
I used to think this guy was a lock for NFL. After last year I have changed my mind. He really looked bad in some games, especially under pressure.

  34. Marky Mark Says:

    Canales is a backstabber.

  35. Defense Rules Says:

Bucs Guy … ‘Interesting that only 4 of the top 12 paid QBs have won a SB and only 1 other has been to a SB. So 7 of 12 have never been to a SB.’

Geno711 … ‘Everyone of those quarterbacks has a higher passer rating in their career than Baker Mayfield. Only he and Daniel Jones in your list had passer ratings in the 80’s.’

Capt Tim … Various JBFers, including myself, have stated opinions about what they think Baker Mayfield is worth to the Bucs. Just for your info, JoeBucsFan is a great site (blog) because the Joes don’t unduly restrict OPINIONS. Commenters who deride others because they don’t happen to agree with their OPINIONS admittedly irritate me, but I normally just by-pass their comments after a time. Folks can disagree with others’ OPINIONS without being derogatory, especially on meaningless things like how much someone is worth monetarily.

Just as an aside, the only QB in that Top-12 group who actually earned his salary last year INMO was Patrick Mahomes. And news-flash: he didn’t win the Super Bowl all by himself. The Chiefs ranked #15 in Points Scored (371 points), but had the #2-ranked defense (allowing just 294 points). Mahomes had his worst year in a number of categories last year, and the Chiefs’ defense saved the season.

Several of the other QBs had good seasons, like Lamar Jackson who went 13-3, but I suspect that he too was helped by the Ravens’ #1-ranked defense. Several others however were abysmal when you look at their performance & availability. TEAM-BUILDING has become a true art in today’s NFL, and effectively managing the salary CAP has become a huge part of that. Personally i think that the Bucs are in good hands with Jason Licht, Todd Bowles AND Mike Greenberg.

  36. Capt.Tim Says:

2 post in a row disappeared. Whats up?

  37. Slacker Says:

Paying Baker 40+ mil a year will only result in a downward spiral on the rest of roster. Weapons and a bad division saved Mayfield. Put him on the Giants, and let’s see him replicate last year

  38. BucFanDMV Says:

    Slacker:

I think that is the point some of us are concerned about. The Bucs will not have a cupcake schedule next year so they are not sneaking up on anyone next year. No way he gets 40 if he does that a huge mistake.

  39. Capt.Tim Says:

    Defense rules,
Geez, dont be such a mom, dude.
They can take it- and so can I, if you think JoeBuc is a place of “shared opinions, with mutual respect” , the you REALLY havent been paying attention.
    Its all in good fun.

  40. Mostly Peaceful Trask Fan Says:

The team got hot at the end of last year.

Baker wants to parlay that into a franchise QB deal.

Baker isn’t a franchise QB – if you write him that check then bye bye Winfield after 2024.

Who is going to save games for you then?

    10. Rams QB Matthew Stafford: $40 million
    10. Cowboys QB Dak Prescott: $40 million
    10. Giants QB Daniel Jones: $40 million

QB’s are not the only market to consider. How about the people writing the Checks.

Average price for a Ticket in Tampa in 2023 was $263 with the cheapest being $62

Average price for a ticket in KC, Philly and Dallas was over $500 with KC being $578 and $204 being the cheapest.

If Mayfield wants top 10 money have him pack his Shat and go to KC and beat out Maholmes. For that matter go beat a Scub like Herbert as his new coach knows talent. think GB or Houston would pay it? Nope.

Guy can barely can beat out a 3 year bench warmer and wants top 10 because everybody else is getting it? good Luck.

Stats are a product of the system and coaching.

  42. Conner50 Says:

“Pay him whatever he wants” lmao nah how about Carolina pays him whatever he wants. Oh wait they signed him before and gave him the boot already. Who cares what Canales has to say he’s not with us anymore, wish him nothing but losses

  43. Mr. Editor Says:

Thanks for providing the list of the top 10 highest paid QBs. It’s interesting that only two on the list have won a Superbowl.

  44. Couch Fan Says:

Let the mediocre QB hit free agency. Let a stupid GM over pay for his mediocre services so we can move on to hopefully finding a good QB who can perform for 60 minutes unlike Captain Garbage Time.

  45. realistic-optimistic Says:

18 QBs had at least 15 starts last season. I wanted to see how Baker stacked up with other full-time starters, so I compared their 2023 stats in several categories. A number of notible QBs are not included due to injury (Burrow, Herbert, Rodgers, Cousins).

Here’s how Baker ranks among this group of 18 QBs:

    Starts: 17
    Win%: 52.9 (13)
    Cmp%: 64.3 (13)
    Yards: 4044 (9)
    TD: 28 (7)
    Int: 10 (7T)
    Fum: 8 (10T)
    Y/A: 7.1 (13)
    Y/G: 237.9 (12)
    QB Rating: 94.6 (10)
    QBR: 54.3 (15)
    Batted Passes: 17 (18T)

These are not cherry-picked stats, they’re pretty typical measuring sticks for a QB. He’s ranked 10th (of 18) or worse in 8 of the 11 categories, and his average rank is 12th. And, this was the best season of his career! Yikes.

Some of you want to pay this guy like he’s a star? I do not get it.

  46. Buccos Says:

BS! Without Mayfield, he would be nowhere, which, btw is exactly where he is !
Pay Baker and LFG ! For a team, projected to win 4-1/2- 6 games , Baker steered the Bucs to NFC Division Champ, 3peat, to 4th consecutive playoff !
    Now, LFG with Baker !

Oh please not everyone even here is dumb. YOu eliminated 14 team spots which is the definition of cherry picking and the amusing thing about it is that means in terms of durability through a season that means baker is in the top third and even better – In stats that actually matter to a QB – yards, td , int He is all to ten even on your own list – THANKS!!

“”ome of you want to pay this guy like he’s a star? I do not get it.”

Youa are right . YOu don’t . What star money? Oh thats right a TOn of you don’t undestand the negotiation process. An owner lists his hourse for a certain price not because he thinks he will get that but because when he comes down during negotiations he gets what he is really aiming for in a lower amount

this is likely to end in the 30s which in the NFL is nowhere near “Star money” amount.

Let me ask this if u pay a WR Evans 26mill a year WTF is the starting QB supposed to earn 10 mill the mentality on this site is JV input step up to the big leagues I wud say mayfield did a super 1st year job takes a few years as a unit to maximize productivity baker plays well in the meaningfully games all year when did that start in the midway & excelled when it counted I wud say I saw a new level from baker in GB & it was awesome to see give him 2 or 3 more years let him thrive cause he will thrive somewhere with good surroundings & I don’t see that in browns or panthers but I wud bet atl he wud even at the vikes

  66. realistic-optimistic Says:

    He was the probowl MVP.

    Flag football MVP. tee hee

  67. BAKERSBucs says Says:

Of the top qb on these stats u people ask bout qb winning SB how many even get to the playoffs & win that is just another dumb comparison it’d like buying a house they compare previous sales in the hood that is how it works for qb paycheck u listed 12 qb they all r in the 40’s so baker is supposed take in 20’s how dumb is that that guy puts his body on the line & is fun to watch he has new baby soon that’s worth 20 mill by itself

  68. BAKERSBucs says Says:

Not just pro bowl mvp he also won passer perfect competition final against stroud u constantly down grade baker to no prevail cause u r an idiot.realistic opto u sir r the least of that name on this site

  69. BAKERSBucs says Says:

So baker shud make less than Evans wtf r u people stupid(Onielbuc)

  70. Buckeyebuckchuck Says:

Spoken like a true Panthers coach. I hope Baker gets paid a decent amount, not a “competitive disadvantage” amount. Good luck with a crappy OLine, receivers and TE’s Davey boy. And a low talent QB that got shell-shocked last year. He wont last 2 years in Tepper World.

  71. Buckeyebuckchuck Says:

I hope Baker signs for starter money that still gives the Bucs room to bring back the core. Patriots “dirty secret” was Brady never broke the bank. Like, #15 in terms of QB pay. Smart

  72. HC Grover Says:

HAHAHA he is stuck wit a total unfixable loser QB!!

  73. HC Grover Says:

May the Bird of Paradise fly up that goldiggers nose.

  74. Rod Munch Says:

Of course he does, he coaches the Panthers and wants the Bucs and Saints to be stuck with awful QB contracts.

  75. ^^mtn^^ Says:

“BAKERSBucs says Says: I saw a new level from baker in GB”

And then there’s the Lions regular season game that started the losing streak.

That’s just it, he’s inconsistent. He has trouble staying healthy, especially with his style of play.

Arm, grit, attitude, moxie, the ‘it’ factor, whatever you want to call it, he’s a good fit for the Bucs.

But if they want to go deeper into the post season, they need some more pieces in FA, and as you know, that takes $

    Should they sign him?

Yes, but maybe he should be more like Brady and realize that getting to the show may mean less $ for him.

Evans 23 first year. Evans 18 second year. 1st year fully guaranteed. Second 6 million guaranteed. 39 mil guaranteed. Incentives will bump his pay up unless all these fabulous rookie receivers come in and light it up.

If Mayfield even wants 4 @ 25 million with 80 million guaranteed on his deal it leaves a huge risk. Won’t happen. Cousins worked those kind of deals his whole career and might be a deal breaker this time at the Vikings. Good for the Bucs I guess because ATL just might do it and winning the Division could get easier without Riddler running the offense there.

  77. Capt.Tim Says:

    Buckybuckchuk,
Brady left us with 75 mil in dead money. Guess he didnt tell us any dirty secrets!
Its Ok Tom. That SuperBowl was well worth a year in Cap Hell

  78. Rod Munch Says:

D Cone – Actually, I just saw Evans numbers earlier today on OTC, and Evans contract is done so he’s making $7m this year, then $22m, then they used void years, so in ’26 he’d be a $13m hit.

  79. Ed McSherry Says:

The best “comparable for Baker (and comparing with other , recent contracts seems to be how they assess a quarterback’s contract-worth “these days.”),” is probably Derek Carr who signed for 37 million with the Saints last year.

Carr came from being in the middle of a very disruptive career situation, to a team that desperately needed a quarterback and accepted him with open arms; just like what happened with Baker; and Carr and Baker are in the same division for further close-comparison.

But, Carr already had a competitive salary with Raiders when negotiating with the Saints.

Meaning, for Baker, who no doubt wants to sign for that “$40 mill minimum wage” for a “top-ten-quarterback… it’s a little different.

In the negotiations, Jason’s probably saying:

“Holy cr@p, Baker, that’s ten times what we gave you with the “hail Mary contract” this year! Even Derek Carr doesn’t get that much.”
“How about 37.5 million? We’d like to have another $2.5 million to throw into Antoine’s contract.”

  80. JD Still Says:

For those who think Canales was wishing Mayfield well, think again! He is hoping Mayfield “ breaks the bank” because he wants us to be foolish enough to give a mediocre, journeyman quarterback , franchise money which will cripple us for years to come and keep us in cap hell , while he builds up his own team , but we would never be incompetent enough to do that! …………Would We?

  81. Ed McSherry Says:

There’s no evidence that Canales actually did anything more than “throw plays against the wall to what sticks,” and, of course, agree like crazy to everything Bowles had to say about “the run game” during his job interview.

But that’s probably what the owner of the Panthers looks-for:
    A yes-man who gets lucky.
