Mike Evans Calls Dave Canales A Brilliant Future Head Coach

January 11th, 2024

Byron Leftwich and Bucco Bruce Arians might not enjoy this.

Today at One Buc Palace, the greatest receiver in Bucs history, Mike Evans, gave quite a blessing to first-year offensive coordinator Dave Canales.

Canales is on the Carolina Panthers’ long list of head coach candidates. Evans was asked about Canales as a head coach prospect and a playcaller. Evans had great reverence in his voice while answering.

“Dave has done a great job,” Evans said. “He’s so positive every day. He knows exactly what to say. And he’s a really brilliant mind. So any team would be lucky to have him as the head guy.”

Asked about Canales’ seemingly boundless energy, Evans downplayed it but added that players are drawn to it.

“Yeah, everybody coaches different. But his style, more people will flock to that,” Evans said.

New age Pete Carroll on offense. His effusive joy for the game reminds me of his mentor, Carroll.

  2. ModHairKen Says:

How many think Canales would object to being reunited with Pete Carroll?

Better show up, Todd Bowles, Monday night or you may be out. They did it to Dungy.

  3. Allbuccedup Says:

Got a feeling that Bill Belichick will be watching Monday night. Better get the team ready to play Todd big daddys watching.

  4. NJbucs23 Says:

I said from the day he was hired. He will be here 2 years max. Dave has the looks, the energy and he can talk.

Now, before you leave, I want to see a playoff run.

  5. Jon Church Says:

@Allbuccedup, LOL now THAT was funny! Bravo!

You make a very good point. Quite possibly Pete Carroll views Florida a good place to live these days.

  8. Dave Pear Says:

Earth to Todd – take note. Aw nevermind. Just run the ball and don’t score. But at least give up copious passing yards playing zone bust and cover zero receivers defense.

  9. Lt. Dan Says:

Can’t see the Panthers going after Canales. After their last several head coaches flopped miserably – they’re gonna want a sure thing head coach. They aren’t going to take a risk on a virtual unknown.

  10. HC Grover Says:

He should stay here a year or two more at least. Next year we should win 10 games and NFCS again. Nother playoff game too. next year will be Bucs v Stinks for NFCS.

  11. Dewey Selmon Says:

Canales might end up back in Seattle as HC.

  12. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

So, Pats decided to not trade Bill Belichick and just released him.

    Called it!

  13. The Fighting Schianoes Says:

I could see Pete coming to Tampa for a couple years with Dave before Dave takes over as HC. Stranger things have happened.

  14. Allbuccedup Says:

Would not be surprised if Canales is the seahawks new HC. I mean there are 8 HC jobs out there odds are that he will have a very good chance. Plus he spent almost as many years in Seattle as Carroll.

What a genius…. How many coaches that have been released get traded instead? that is like saying I bet the sun comes up tomorrow.

Wow. You have quite the mouth on you. Except I said it in the off season, ya dope. Before it was even suggested that Bill and the pats would part ways.

And even so, the recent talk has been about trading him, not just releasing him.

But hey…you needed to make yourself feel good at someone else’s expense. I hope you got what you needed out of the comment.

Brady will not leave the Patriots unless he retires to run for political office. A waste to even suggest this.

  18. SlyPirate Says:

    THANK YOU, MIKE!!!!

Sell Canales to another team. Looks better than firing him. Brilliant tactic.

  19. Usfbuc Says:

Idk about old Pete, his defense is 30th in the league in yards allowed. They give up more yards per game and more TDs than our current defense.

This comment from ME just sounds like standard platitudes for a fellow coworker.

Why? Should Todd be worried about getting replaced by a coach with an indentical win loss %? Take away Tom Brady and Bill Belichik is LITERALLY a losing coach! 5 years in Cleveland and 5 years in N.E. without Brady, BB has a LOSING record!!!

So unless Belichik can work a miracle and take twenty years off of Tom Brady’s age and get him to come back it’s absurd to hear all this BS about Belichik.

His freaking win % 5 years in Cleveland along with the 5 years in NEW England without Brady is .429% immensley (snark font off now) better than Bowles .422 career win %.

That encompasses BOTH of their careers and for BB it spans several decades and different styles of NFL football. And so there is a LONG record to analyze.

Don’t like the entire career comparison. How about something more recent like the last two years! BB is 12-22 while Bowles is 17-17, BB 12-22 Bowles 17-17

Over the past two years BB has won 35% of his games..Bowles 50%,

Listen Bowles cannot walk across the water to cross Tampa Bay…looks like Belichik may have trouble finding his way on the Howard Frankland.

Oh but let’s not forget BB’s upside…his award winning, charming, and honest personality!!!

I get the yammering for Harbaugh…he’s in a special class…so is BB…he is the luckiest guy to ever coach an NFL team…GAMBLING on a sixth round draft pick..and then stumbling onto the GOAT!!! What has Bill Belichik accomplished without Brady or Bill Parcells?

  29. CalBucsFan Says:

Hey BakerFan, BucBonzai has been providing solid analysis and commentary on JBF for years, so I’m going to predict something too.

You’re going to be a short-time commenter on JBF for just about as long as BM is the Bucs QB, another short-timer. The one difference though is Baker’s likable.

Yep let’s go. Bowels better show something monday

  33. IE Buc Says:

I think he needs some more time and growth at OC before he can become a HC. Let’s keep him around and pair him with Pete Carroll who would be a good HC for the Bucs.
