“Obsessed” Over Baker Mayfield

December 22nd, 2023

Baker believer.

Baker Mayfield, NFL Comeback Player of the Year? A high-profile voter for the award thinks it could happen.

The touchy-feely crowd may want to vote for Bills safety Damar Hamlin; he’s the guy who had a heart attack in the Bengals-Bills game after getting blasted in the heart last year, specifically a commotio cordis event.

But what did Hamlin come back from football-wise? He was a nothing player. Hamlin is a wonderful story who came back from the near-dead.

But the “Comeback Player of the Year” award isn’t issued by the American Medical Association. It’s a football award.

Mayfield, a former No. 1 overall pick and playoff-winning quarterback, was considered to be on the NFL scrap heap. Now, Joe saw him listed at No. 10 in this past week’s quarterback power rankings.

One man who has a vote for “Comeback Player of the Year” is popular sports TV and radio personality Adam Schein. The CBS Sports Network and SiriusXM Mad Dog Radio host typed for NFL.com that if the season ended today, Mayfield would get his vote.

Color me obsessed. Baker Mayfield has found a new home and it’s awesome. I’m an Associated Press awards voter, and the former No. 1 overall pick is my current leader for Comeback Player of the Year. After getting off to a hot start, the Buccaneers slumped at midseason, but Baker wouldn’t let them die. Now Tampa’s riding a three-game win streak, and Mayfield just became the first visiting quarterback to ever post a perfect passer rating at Lambeau Field. Unbelievable. And he’s not the only Buccaneer to root for …

Mike Evans continues to do what Mike Evans does: rack up 1,000-yard seasons. The man has now started his career with 10 straight! And honestly, at age 30, he appears as dominant as ever. Not a bad look in a contract season, eh? Meanwhile, I’m so happy for head coach Todd Bowles, who deserves immense credit for keeping the Buccaneers on task and getting them back in the playoff picture.

I didn’t expect anything out of this team back in the preseason, and when the Bucs fell to 4-7 at the end of last month, I figured that was definitely a wrap. Now Tampa’s surging at the right time, with three winnable games (vs. Jacksonville, vs. New Orleans, at Carolina) to close out the regular season. Let’s keep the fun going right into the postseason tournament!

Joe really wants to embrace what happened in Green Bay as the real Bucs. But as we all know, Mayfield is streaky and he has been in the Bucs’ three-game win streak. He’s also been clutch.

Joe Barry’s defense in Green Bay is Mike Smith-like. Look, no one is happier than Joe the offense finally broke out and the Bucs punked the Pack. But Joe has to see more than just this one game/small sample size to believe last week’s offense is the new norm for the team and for Mayfield.

Color Joe in a “trust but verify” mode. Two more impressive wins would verify to Joe that Mayfield and the Bucs have completely turned the corner.

I hope our defense shows up in “Trust but TERRIFY” beast mode!

  2. Aceofaerospace Says:

Trust but verify is a great analogy Joe. I’m with you. I am a Trask fan, but I want to win regardless of who’s playing. Right now Baker is the man. I’m ok with that continuing. But I don’t believe that he and Trask will be a Buc next year. That’s ok to. We can worry about that in ‘24. Just keep winning.

  3. Since76 Says:

Every win this year except greenbay was because of defense. Defense gave up the game once. The defence can give up a ton of real estate in games but they don’t give up points. Most games the offense doesn’t get a ton of real estate

  4. NE Fan Says:

Correct me if I’m wrong, wasn’t Baker playing lousy until his 4 tds against the 23rd ranked D? A lot of smoke being blown up this guy’s backside. He has not be a team that is not .500 or better. Not sure if Lawrence is playing or not but if he is got to believe the Jaguars will put him back in his place. Average at best, great backup, THAT’S IT! As for Todd, you can’t win anything with the 26th ranked D. I take that back, you can win the gutter division NFC South.

  5. Ed Says:

For the Bucs to gain a firm grasp on their aspirations of being a playoff team, they must start winning games at home. The Bucs have a 3-3 record at home with a horrid loss to Atlanta and not competitive vs the Lions and Eagles.

With 2 home games left, winning both and playing well is the right formula to go into a home playoff game vs the Cowboy or Eagles.

They must stay focused at home and take care of business. What happens after these 2 games will make their final game less meaningful vs the Panthers if they beat Jacksonville.

Getting home game in the playoffs is a big deal and the Bucs have to prove they can win games against a good team at home.

Going into a home playoff game by beating 2 decent teams will give these young players who are shining a much better chance of competing against Dallas or Philadelphia at home. I expect to see them play with urgency at home so they can play the backups vs the Panthers and give their older players a rest for the final week.

Come Back? From Where? Can’t come back unless you have actually been somewhere.

Mayfield chose to play hurt/bad at CLV. If he is the team guy as everyone states he could have shut it down in 2021 and been fine going into 2022. Mayfield chose to be traded, when he wasn’t the guy and gave up money to be able to go to a crappy team. He has been nowhere.

Seems to me he’s the guy to set the forest on fire and look to be a hero coming out carrying a bunny.

Flacco 313 yards and 2.3 TD’s per game and the only snaps he was taking up to a month ago were Ginger Snaps on his couch in his Bath Robe. Mayfield stats on the other hand 236 yards and 1.7 TD’s.

Can just imagine Flacco watching Eagles vs Bucs and texting his friends.

Flacco > Brady: They hired that MFer?
    Brady > Flacco: LOL

NE Fan: All the national attention that the Bucs and Mayfield are getting must be driving you crazier than you already were! Glad to see that Haters like you are becoming scarce. Also, your comments are “average, at best.” You’re a great backup to the likes of Realistic and David. THATS IT!

    Keep winning Baker.

  14. NE Fan Says:

Wyoming, once AGAIN air is thin in those hills. You have been smooching Bakers you know what since he arrived. 15. Joe Says:

Mayfield chose to play hurt/bad at CLV

    He was drafted by Cleveland.

  16. Gipper Says:

Baker was “never on the scrap heap.” That is just the narrative that lazy sports media want to repeat. That’s the way “journalists” operate in America these days. They operate this way in the regular news media as well. Remember Russian collusion that didn’t happen? They pick up a theme and just repeat it. Mayfield was badly injured early in 2021 season and tried to play with a torn labrum in his left shoulder. Browns traded him in 2022 to a team, Carolina, that cannot protect any passer and he asked for his release. Knowledgeable Browns fans know the real story. Mayfield was the best thing that happened to the Browns since their NFL return in 1997.

  17. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

Let’s see if our defense can stop a team on THREE AND OUT on their opening drive versus marching right down the field for some sort of score.

  18. infomeplease Says:

The Saints lost last night so the Bucs have a bit of room to err. That said, I hope they stay focused on the Jags and play as a must win game. A strong win could add to the positive momentum they are bringing into this game.
In the NFL and all professional sports for that matter, the mental edge is what separates the winners from the losers. It’s about making plays when the game is on the line. Having that positive momentum helps bring the play making to fruitation.

  19. Bojim Says:

As I said before. He is perfect for the Bucs. Gives us an identity. Tough guy. Makes everyone tougher. He plays damn good when everyone does their job. Sunday showed it.

    —–

thats totally DUMB from start to finish. In football you can’t give up yardage and not end up some games giving up points because the whole point of the game is yardage . Tds are scored when you get enough yardage to go in the end zone and field goals are given up when you get enough yardage to kick em.

You dont just look at last drives. You look at ALL scores and MULTIPLE TDs and field goals that need not have been given up have been given up by this defense in MULTIPLE games because The pass coverage has looked like swish chesee for over a month.

The criticism Baker gets when the Bucs lose is extreme, yet when they win it’s always because of the “Defense”. The Bucs defense is Jekyl and Hyde. Baker will be the franchise QB for the next 3-5 years. Get used to it. And the Bucs will be better for it!
The Bucs were picked to win 2-3 games this season and Baker has them on the brink of the playoffs. If that’s not good enough for you go root for a different team. Bunch of whine bags.

this is why when we call Traskies idiots its not an insult. We are just using the best word in the dictionary to describe them

Flacco playing well means nothing for every other QB in there league. IF 2 tds is the cut off for good QBs nit – then at this point only two Qbs in the entire league would be good

  35. Defense Rules Says:

NE Fan … ‘As for Todd, you can’t win anything with the 26th ranked D. I take that back, you can win the gutter division NFC South.’

Got a hunch that most fans would agree the Points Allowed is a more important criteria for evaluating a defense’s performance than Yards Allowed. Yes the Bucs are 26th in Total Yards Allowed, but they’re ranked 13th in Points Allowed. Our 290 Points Allowed in 14 games (20.7 PPG average) is ever so slightly better than what we allowed in 2022 (21.1 PPG), in 2021 (20.8 PPG), better than we did in 2020 (22.2 PPG) and immeasurably better than we did in 2019 (28.1 PPG).

The Total Yards Allowed however is way too high for my liking because it puts far too much pressure on Red Zone performance (quality teams don’t have to settle for FGs?). We’re on-track to surrender over 6,000 Total Yards, and that’s the highest number since the Mike Smith days. THAT will be our downfall against beastly playoff teams like the 49ers, Lions, Cowboys or whoever.

I think I’ve figured out why, but can’t be sure yet. When Bowles focuses the defense on stopping the run, we get eaten alive by the pass (Lions got 40 yds rushing but 340 yds passing). When we focus on stopping the pass, we get eaten alive by the run (Colts got only 239 yds passing, but 155 yds rushing). Most of our losses though came against teams who successfully used a more balanced run-pass attack (Eagles chewed us up with 271 yds passing and 202 yds rushing). We’ve somehow got to find a better ‘balance’ on defense too.

  39. Rod Munch Says:

Serious question… how can Baker be a comeback player when he’s never been anywhere in the first place? What is he coming back from?

He could certainly get something like ‘most improved’, but that’s mainly because he was literally the worst QB in football for the previous 2 years, so this year, even if he’s been a low-end middling QB, he’d still be the most improved because the bar is so low to start with.

But comeback? Comeback from what? He’s never been anywhere.

  40. Tb bolts Says:

Joebakerfan at it again… stroking midfield when he had one good game…. Hardly any credit given to the rest of the team… chris godwin.. RW… baker isnt going to win anything by himself. These urinealists BASH this team and everyone who apart of it EXCEPT the journeyman QB who at times has less than 50 yards at the half.. then he has one nfl QB caliber game and he’s the second coming of christ lmao

  41. SlyPirate Says:

    WHY THE HYPE?

Who did that? The defense? Our Great running game?
Meybe our WRs were throwing to themselves.

We are in First place because of Baker Mayfield.
He is why we are fighting for the playoffs, not the first pick.

That much should be obvious to anyone who has watched this season.

  43. Rod Munch Says:

Defense Rules – The Bucs have also slipped from 4th best points against in the NFC to 7th since Devin White has been out. People happy he’s been injured are really dumb people, he’s a former ALL-PRO for a reason, and getting him back should help. Well, assuming Bowles actually uses him correct and doesn’t just tell him to stand around in zone defense the entire game.

Anywho, as of late it seems like the defense has been playing a lot more man-to-man again. Do you have any sources that show if that’s real or not? Earlier in the year they were over 95% of the time playing zone, and that doesn’t seem to be the case as of late. However, after playing zone that much, the team has seemed sloppy in man, but if the idea is to go back to being an aggressive defense if the Bucs make the playoffs, you want to shake off the rust now. If that is what Bowles has been doing the last few weeks, then congrats to him for making adjustments. He seems like the type of idiot that coach that would just stick to whatever failing plan isn’t working, so this would be a huge breakthrough if he legit is changing things up.

Then again, against perhaps the Jags backup QB, I’d expect Bowles to sit back in a soft sloppy zone 100% of the time — because they’d never see it coming. That’s normally the level of coaching we see from Bowles as headcoach. But who knows, maybe he’s changed.

  44. Rod Munch Says:

    Capt.Tim Says:

We’re in first place because we’re in the NFC South.

  45. SmoothBayRider Says:

The amount of people on here who think that Baker is trash, is just absolutely mind boggling. Has he been inconsistent , sure he has, but I honestly don’t know what more you could ask for considering the team’s situation heading into this season. I look at it like this………….

He’s made a lot plays to help win this team games, and has made very few to help this team lose games. For what we are paying him this year, compared to what other QBs in the league are making, I’d say he’s been damn good for us.

    , Smooth

  46. Capt.Tim Says:

Seems that would be worth an article, in a site dedicated to this team.
A perfect Game in Lambeau. Offensive Player of the Week.
There should be at least a couple articles about that.

  47. Rod Munch Says:

Question to real Bucs fans, not the stalker Baker Bois.

If Baker was to leave the Bucs and sign a huge Derek Carr like deal with the Falcons next season … would you in any way suddenly fear the Falcons?

I would not, and I’d be happy to know the Falcons are suck with a middling low-end QB, who, based on his history, will greatly regress.

In any case, if Baker, who was terrible in the weeks leading up to his career day in Green Bay, can suddenly get on a roll that takes him through the end of the year and into the playoffs, well, he’s going to make himself a ton of money.

  48. Rod Munch Says:

SmoothBayRider – I will agree that for the money, and the options available, Baker was a good value, but the issue is more about the future, and being stuck with a low-end middling QB with no upside. Is going .500 what you want as a team, or is it winning a SB? The NFC South isn’t going to be this awful forever.

With that said, Baker has the chance here to rewrite the book on himself. If he can take that career day in GB and stay hot through the rest of the year and the playoffs, then his rep as a huge bust will change.

I personally do not think Baker is a good QB, but I’m willing to let him change my mind, and I hope he can do so since it would mean the Bucs are doing some damage in the playoffs.

Doubt that some of his shenanigans have endeared him to his teammates.

I don’t know of any sources that track man-to-man versus zone. Not sure how they could because often you might have 2 CBs playing man while the nickel & Safeties start off in zone then shift, or whatever. Got a hunch that pass defense at the NFL level is very much a continual chess game … in 3 dimensions given how some of these guys can sky.

There has been 422 games played at home against Packers and none of the opposing QB’s had accomplisher what Mayfield did last week. 62. Gipper Says:

Baker haters you won’t like this but reprinted below is a story today from CBS called: “The Top Free Agent Signings of 2023”

This is not surprising to those of us who have been saying what a terrific job Baker has done. Confirms what Bowles, Evans, Wirfs and Canales have been saying. RodMunch, David, BelleGlade read it and take it all in:

Of all the quarterback moves this offseason, Mayfield turned out to be the best offseason signing that made an immediate impact. Pairing Mayfield with offensive coordinator Dave Canales has paid massive dividends, as Mayfield has completed 63.5% of his passes for 3,315 yards with 24 touchdowns to just eight interceptions and a 94.7 passer rating.

Mayfield is putting up similar numbers to the 2020 version that led the Cleveland Browns to a playoff victory (62.8%, 3,563 yards, 26 TD, 8 INT, 95.9 rating), which is all the Buccaneers asked him to do in an offense with Mike Evans and Chris Godwin as his top pass catchers.

The Buccaneers are leading the NFC South because Mayfield has given them above-average quarterback play. Mayfield is eighth in touchdown rate (5.2%), 10th in interception rate (1.7%), and ninth in quarterback rating (94.7%). Not bad for the 37th highest-paid quarterback this year.

  63. Larrd Says:

that fine since we won’t see your player in anything but garbage or injury time this season

Poor Kyle. Even his fans were benched most of this week.

Welcome back from the bunker guys. Stretch, see the sun and Here hoping Sunday won’t send you back under cover.

As a former college football player I am very open to criticism.

If you are not open to criticism and think you know everything then you can’t learn and grow and be successful.

I have rewatched every Bucs game offensive series so I could make a more valid argument for or against Baker. I wanted to remove any predetermined thoughts about Baker that I had.

Minnesota he played good. Managed the game well. Wasn’t spectacular, but he didn’t hurt us and his good game management did help us win.

Baker played fantastic against the Bears and was a major factor in the Bucs victory.

Baker played poorly against a really good Eagles team and we lost.

Baker played great against the Saints and helped us beat our hated rival.

Baker played very poorly against a really awful Falcons team and we lost.

Baker played okay against a good Bills team. To many short drives of that led to punts and hung the defense out to dry.

Baker’s play against Houston was awesome and we should have won that game had it not been for an epic defensive letdown.

Baker played okay against a bad Titans team.

San Fran was awful for Baker.

Baker played average against the Colts with a costly interception and game ending fumble that resulted in a loss.

Baker played poorly against two bad teams in a row against the Panthers and Falcons, but he was clutch in the end and helped the Bucs get the most important stat, the W.

Against the Packers his play at quarterback was superior and as good as it gets.

If Baker can be consistent, and put together good games the rest of this season, then the Bucs have a shot to make noise in the playoffs and Bakee will have earned a lot of money in his very near future.

    Fingers crossed 🤞

    I say let’s win out.

    Win a playoff game.

I’d be willing to bring everyone back.

Sign some FAs to fill holes.

I can’t cheer for losses so at this point…LFGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG

Yes, a Baker Fan. No, I won’t leave ( Baker’s Green Bay game was a “deal sealer”. Hès not going anywhere, though he could, and for probably more$) Chemistry with this offense has been slow to arrive but has turned a corner. It’s not going to regress. Each component is improving, and the whole will prove to be greater than its parts. My 300$ bet @25 to 1 for Baker Comeback Player of year had a great boost last week. Let’s go #6 !

    Oh YAY!!
    Adam Schein likes Baker.

Not much of an endorsement. Points out he is one of those secret AP voters first of all. What a freaking bunch of BS that is. Can you say bogus All Pro voting?

Not to mention I have heard nothng but a whole lot of crickets on Baker from almost all the talking heads except for the occasion moxie comment and Baker is a bust…been on 4 teams…

Now he looks great for a game and…Come on Joe! I am not an anti Baker guy. Just pointing out some things that tell me to pump the brakes on all the usual media hype.

    Go Bucs

This article is about Baker being the comeback player of the year and we have people in the comment section still talking about Kyle Trask. I swear, did y’all eat paint as kids?

Mike C & Tony having a Mayfield sandwich for XMAS? The acf east was so bad because Patriotd led by TB12 were kicking their arses twice a season. The Jets were a bad team because, well you know who was the HC for a hand full of years. For God’s sake, Bakers wins are against sub par teams due to the Bucs easy schedule and other than the Jags, it gets easier. If Baker wins this weekend I may change my tone. I never said he was a bad QB, I said he isn’t good enough to get you to the promised land. In 2020 his Cleveland team was better than Bucs today and he fell short to Chad Henne. Those that try to hurt me with Patriot insults fall on deaf ears. It is evident you cannot win this the league without a good QB and the Patriots do not have one or a good WR core. Let this be a lesson to you Cakeb fans, not all first round QB’s work out. 100% on Belichick’s poor draft picks. He has a great coaching mind but sucks as a GM.

  75. Cobraboy Says:

It is not just Mayfield. Of course the QB is critical. But the entire O was drag slicks in the mud for over half the season.

Is there any surprise that the rise in Mayfield performance is congruent with the rise (or fail) of the run game and the maturity of Canales play design and calling?

Only casuals think all that matters in an NFL offense is the QB.

The season is not over and this team and coaching staff still need to show consistency. a three-game streak is fun and keeps the team in the hunt, but lay some eggs and the boo birds and the Reaper could show up…again.

I’m hopeful; but not totally confident.

24 touchdowns and only 8 picks. Ranked 9 in passing. You don’t compile that record in one game. Just because no one notices doesn’t mean it isn’t happening😊
