Todd Bowles Dodges Questions About Trade Deadline Inactivity

November 1st, 2023

Mum on trade talks.

Asked about not making any moves at yesterday’s trade deadline, Bucs coach Todd Bowles punted.

The Bucs, with one of the league’s worst rushing attacks since Bowles was named coach, stood pat when the NFL’s trade deadline came and went yesterday afternoon.

On Monday, Bowles said the Bucs were neither buyers or sellers, but listeners. In other words, he basically told the NFL at large, make us an offer.

So Joe asked Bowles today if the offers the Bucs received — if there were any — were just unacceptable or did Bowles believe he has the horses necessary to make a run in January football.

Bowles told Joe that was a question for Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht.

“That’s more Jason’s wheelhouse,” Bowles said. “I’m dealing with football, getting gameplans ready. He’d be better suited to answer that question.”

Bowles was then asked by WTVT-TV Channel 13 sports anchor Kevin O’Donnell if the Bucs got many calls as O’Donnell cited a report out of New York that the Jets wanted Mike Evans, Bowles again said he too was wrapped up with on-field football matters to know.

“Again, that would be Jason’s [question],'” Bowles said. “As far as I know, I’m in gameplanning. If [a proposed deal] is anything serious, he comes to talk to me.

“But that’s his wheelhouse.”

The problem with Bowles’ suggestion to ask Licht? The Bucs media relations staff did not make Licht available for questions related to the trade deadline.

So does this make it safe to assume the Bucs were not in serious talks in any sort of serious trade chatter, whether it was acquiring a running back or selling off an asset to acquire a draft pick?

That sounds correct. Licht has a personnel plan that goes out a few years. He’ll listen to proposals. If he likes one, he’ll ask/tell Bowles.

No trade was going to happen. Licht has never made an in-season trade. No player worth trading has much market value. Evans is declining and wouldn’t fetch more than a 3rd or 4th at his age. We’ll get a comp pick for White.

He needs to find their IDENTITY first!

    Jets wanted Evans?
    LMAO
    Doesn’t make any sense
Mike is up in age he’s staying here
    Plus Mayfield better than Wilson
Devin White is gone for sure

    @SlyPirate,
What signs are you seeing making you believe that Evans is declining?

Statistically, he’s on pace to have one of his better seasons.

Joe … ‘The problem with Bowles’ suggestion to ask Licht? The Bucs media relations staff did not make Licht available for questions related to the trade deadline.’

So because the Bucs idn’t put Licht on parade, that translates into … ‘Todd Bowles Dodges Questions About Trade Deadline Inactivity’. Didn’t look like Bowles dodged it at all Joe. He was very pointed when he said ‘Go ask Jason Licht’. And he was right. That’s JL’s baliwick.

I dont see Big Mike slowing down one bit. He looks “fresh” this season. But I will say one thing, for as great as he is he sure drops a lot of passes.

  7. Mike S Says:

    Translation: Bowles not happy

  8. NE Fan Says:

Bowels not happy or Licht not happy with Bowles?

  9. BillyBucco Says:

But Im sure,”They Talked About It”, so everything is FINE.

No, it translates very clearly to what Joe wrote. Bowles dodged the questions. He never answered the questions. He told us instead to ask Licht. That’s not an answer, that’s a total dodge.

If you really believe a head coach was not kept privy of trade talks, Joe has oceanfront property in Kansas for sale at a good discount.

Hell, just Monday when Bowles was asked about the trade deadline, he said they were listening. Now? Gotta ask Licht!

Damned lying is a prerequisite for any coaching/front office job in the NFL !

  12. Pelsbuc61 Says:

Had Licht not overpaid for below average Davis and Dean, Bucs would have been in a much better position to at least acquire a RB not to mention positioned better for next year. Hard to watch this team and how they’re coached.

Bowles dodged the questions but he HAS to dodge the questions; he cannot tell us what really happened. He risks losing the locker room if he said certain things. For example: “We were trying to trade White and Evans but were not offered sufficient compensation”.

Dodging certain questions probably falls within his job description. 😉

Bowles is doing his game plans…Houston, we have a problem.

  16. BrianBucs Says:

Sounds to me like Todd and Jason may have not have been on the same trade time page or may have had a disagreement or difference of opinion.

  17. Tony Says:

Bowles can go after this year & I’m sure not many people will be heartbroken. Dude is not meant to be a head coach. Not even of a flag football team. It’s just amazing they never do anything during the trade deadline. It’s as if they just don’t care.

  18. NE Fan Says:

I’m sure Jeff is proud of his grandpa, what a great example you are!!!

  19. MelvinJunior Says:

“LISTENING” LoL. A much better answer would be “We Feel GREAT, And Are HIGHLY, ‘Confident’ Moving Forward With The TEAM That We Have Right HERE, Currently Constructed… And, We EXPECT To WINNNNN!!!!” Bowles just has to be the MOST miserably, depressing coach I have ever SEEN.

  20. Seanbuc76 Says:

As far as being buyers that wouldn’t have been a smart move considering we barely have any salary cap money now as sellers I am a little surprised that nothing was done especially knowing the Jets was ready to send a package of pics to us for Mike Evans apparently

  21. garro Says:

Don’t think Bowles dodged that one Joe. You sometimes jump to some huge conclusions.

The question has been asked and answered by Licht since last season. We ain’t buyers and we all know Jason and company like to re-sign their own guys.

Sorry you did not get you’re Blue Chip running back Joe but come on now.

    Go Bucs!
