The Bucs Defense, Sacks And Slack

August 11th, 2023

Bucs coach Todd Bowles.

It’s been interesting if not eyebrow-raising to hear Bucs coach Todd Bowles discuss his edge rushers, meaning his outside linebackers.

In speaking with the local pen and mic club as well as SiriusXM NFL Radio, Bowles cited outside linebacker as presenting the most difficult choices when it comes to who stays and who gets sent packing (or maybe sent to the practice squad) when NFL teams must whittle their rosters to 53.

Scott Spratt, typing for Aaron Schatz’s Football Almanac 2023, documented that it appears the Bucs have done the right thing to try to build an edge rush. But it just hasn’t worked out.

A lot of praise from One Buc Palace has been heaped on rookie outside linebacker YaYa Diaby. He has promise, but NFL history shows that rookie outside linebackers/edge rushers rarely make a major impact, especially third-round picks like Diaby.

Oh, it happens. But for every Bosa brother there are legions of sackless Kyle Moores. It would be nice if Diaby had 5.5 sacks like Noah Spence had as a rookie in 2016.

At the time, the Bucs and fans really thought the team had something in Spence. Injuries derailed his career.

If Diaby has, say, six sacks, that’s three-fourths of what Joe Tryon-Shoyinka had in his first two seasons combined, including playoffs.

With Bucs coach Todd Bowles needing wins, and the Bucs defense only a solid edge rush from being a complete defense, Joe wonders how much slack JTS gets to turn the corner before the Bucs and give Diaby his snaps to try and prove his worth.

Joe lots of people on twitter are refuting Ira’s report of Baker being the starter week 1.
Comes with the territory. No worries. Some people like Joe say “cool scoop” when someone breaks something. Others try to discredit. That’s just how it is. Reminds Joe a lot of when Joe broke in 2019 that the Bucs had decided on a head coach, that it would be Arians, and the announcement would come on or before a set date that Joe identified. Lots of media ran to Twitter to scream fake news when it was 100% accurate. –Joe

Let’s just hope the Vea and Kancey effect is real.

JTS might be like Noah Spence and simply not make the team only without the injury excuse.

Or, if Diaby has 6 sacks, you could say it’s only 2 more than JTS had his rookie year when he was a part time player.

I still wouldn’t give up on JTS quite yet, 8 sacks in his first two seasons doesn’t mean bust. It’s not good, but it’s not like he’s done nothing. Also, he was super green, not playing much in college and taking off a year because he was afraid of getting a cold. Just giving a counter take on him, not saying he will be anything. BUT, it would be awesome if YaYa flat out wins the job, but at the same time JTS improves. Shaq won’t be here next year, so if the new coach still runs an attacking 3-4, you’re going to need another outside pass rusher.

They need some pre season wins. It may be the only ones they get with the F Troop coaching staff. This game will be very interesting. Especially the 1st qtr.

DO YOU HAVE ANY CLUE TO THE AFTERMATH THAT IT LEFT IN ITS PATH FOR THOSE OF US WHO LIVED THROUGH IT. WELL HERE’S ONE GENIUS. IT GAVE ME COPD. HAVEN’T SMOKED A DAY IN MY LIFE.
YOU ARE A GOOMBA DUDE. SELF RIGHTEOUS LOSER. I PUT A PICTURE OF MY PUTTTS BESIDE A PICTURE OF YOUR FACE. NO DIFFERENCE.

This anti-Trask psyop is pretty ugly.

We should just ignore it. It’s in bad faith.

  8. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Time to unleash Devin White again…….send him after the QB…

  9. Voice of Truth Says:

He might be the leader now, but there is no way on earth Baker starts if he comes out and craps the bed in preseason while Kyle shines.

That would be the quickest way for Todd to be shown the door really – ignore what is obvious to everyone (again) and use the Lovie Smith philosophy of the “veteran presence”

11 hours and counting to the first test

Habitual Complainer: You’re predicting the Bucs won’t win a regular season game? Do you know how few teams lose all of their games? I honestly wonder if you know anything about football, or actually follow football.

“ Since 1944, only five teams have had winless seasons in the NFL: the 1960 Dallas Cowboys (0–11–1), the 1976 Tampa Bay Buccaneers (0–14), the 1982 Baltimore Colts (0–8–1) the 2008 Detroit Lions (0–16), and the 2017 Cleveland Browns (0–16).”

So 5 times in 78 years.
