Kyle Trask Not On Top-40 Quarterbacks List?

May 17th, 2023

Another skeptic.

Man, this sure seems disrespectful to Tom Brady’s ability to mentor a capable young quarterback.

Springtime means the revelation of the best 40 quarterbacks in football, as determined by former Bucs quarterback Chris Simms, the NBC Sports film guru.

To date, Simms has shared his bottom 10 QBs and Trask is nowhere to be found. Here are the revealed rankings:

31. Jordan Love
32. Jarrett Stidham
33. Taylor Heinicke
34. Gardner Minshew
35. Mike White
36. Anthony Richardson
37. Bryce Young
38. C.J. Stroud
39. Sam Howell
40. Desmond Ridder

Joe assumes Simms won’t rank Trask in the top-30 because there’s no evidence he’s better than Heinicke, who has a 12-11-1 record as a starter over the past two seasons. Plus, Joe knows Simms believes fellow Bucs QB Baker Mayfield still can salvage his career.

Also, Joe has to think Simms believes America’s Backup, Jameis Winston, is better than Trask.

Regardless, Joe finds this apparent non-ranking quite a slap in the face to Trask. What exactly has winless Jarrett Stidham done in the NFL?

Joe’s not sure why Simms, a Bucs fan and a guy who worked alongside Brady in New England, thinks Trask hasn’t progressed enough under Brady’s tutelage to be ranked among rookie and never-been quarterbacks.

  1. D-Rok Says:

Well, duh, Trask hasn’t played. How is he gonna make ANY list?

Oh, wait. That list includes just-drafted rookie QB’s who’ve never taken 1 NFL snap, live or preseason. Rather disrespectful to Trask who has taken a few NFL snaps. LOL.

  2. Bojim Says:

How does he know he didn’t learn anything from Brady. Trask barely played last year and he hasn’t watched him this year because he’s not even in camp. Simms is full of himself. Thinks he knows it all.

  3. Tucker Says:

I’m sure he has heard things and isn’t basing it on tarot card readings but whatever we will find out when the season starts.

  4. D-Rok Says:

    Pretty cool, Joe. šŸ˜‰

  5. Simeon97 Says:

Joe, as someone on the “inside” what is really going on with Trask? Why didn’t he see any playing time? Why is this not his team yet? he sat for 2 years under the GOAT and loses his job to, until proven otherwise, washed up mayfield? This is looking like an epic bust of a 2nd round choice and he either sucks or there’s something else, probably the former.

  6. Red Skeleton Says:

Trask is a complete unknown. Even to Buc fans. Let the “competition” begin

  7. Eric Says:

Opinions are like, well you get the point! I want to see the first ā€œguruā€ that had Brady in the top 10 before he played one down thatā€™s a guy with credibility to me!

  8. Joe in Michigan Says:

Who has worse takes, Simms or Peter King? In my top billion person list of who I GAF about, neither made it.

  9. Marine Buc Says:

Nothing against Kyle Trask but why should he be on ANY lists at the moment?

He hasn’t done a single thing in the NFL. He should have started and played the entire Atlanta game (week 18) but that whole situation was extremely poorly handled by our GM, head coach and the bafoon who was running our offense in 2022…

Make Trask earn it if he is able to even get on the field.

  10. D-Rok Says:

    Marine,

See my post above to see what angle Joe is going for in this post. And, I agree with Joe – this list is disrespectful. Ammiright?

  11. D-Rok Says:

And in this list is Anthony Richardson, drafted by the Colts, whom the Colts have publicly stated he will NOT play this year…and Trask doesn’t rate above a rookie who won’t play? C’mon man….this list sucks. Utter hogwash.

  12. BAā€™s Red Pen Says:

The occult of Trask isnā€™t having a good day on JBF today.

  13. Gofortheface30 Says:

Iā€™m sure quite a bit of commenters on here has Trask just outside the top 10 or so. If you ainā€™t Gator youā€™re gator bait! šŸ¤¤

  14. Craig Says:

If he had put him on the list the Trask haters would be up in arms, because there is no quantifiable evidence of what he is. He was drafted in the second round, and that is higher than many on that list.

Now all he has to do is prove his last really isn’t Aguayo.

  15. Marine Buc Says:

    @ D-Rok

I understand what your saying… I like what Kyle did at UF and he seems like a great kid.

But if he can’t beat out Baker Mayfield none of this really matters…

    Am I right?

  16. BFFL Says:

When the Bucs are so desperate they go out and get mayfield it pretty much shows you what they think about trask.

  17. SlyPirate Says:

    Desmond Ridder …

is the guy who got majorly dissed on this list. Dude is a starter! Rookies and backups are listed above him. OMG!

  18. Oxycondoms Says:

Trask is the new ryan griffin

  19. D-Rok Says:

    Marine,

    You right.

  20. Tye Says:

    ALL HOPE rests with Mayfield!….

  21. Couch Fan Says:

Im ok with this because Trask never played in a real NFL game yet. However those rookies havent either and Trask was much better at UF than Richardson…. so,yeah. We’ll see.

  22. HC Grover Says:

I guess we will see in pre-season.

  23. Winny Testaverde Says:

Why would he be in the top 64 let alone top 40? And heā€™s not a Bucs fanā€¦

  24. Buc4evr Says:

Ranking means nothing. Letā€™s see Trask play in a game with all the starters. More preseason BS, like who won the draft. What a joke.

  25. Jeffā€™s grandpa Says:

Chrissy is just mad a real qb is wearing #2

  26. sasquatch Says:

Why would he be on the list? He’s completed 3 passes in NFL games. Don’t you have to prove something to make this list? Or at least be a touted rookie? Who gives a funk anyway? It doesn’t matter.

  27. Buccos Says:

Letā€™s see this list at the end of the season. Thatā€™s all that matters

  28. sasquatch Says:

Not that anybody’s rankings matter, but aren’t we more concerned about Baker Mayfield than Trask? I mean, Mayfield is going to be the starter.

  29. Pewter Power Says:

lol did you see trask play that last game of the seasonā€¦. No then how about preseason. He hasnā€™t proved heā€™s good enough so he canā€™t feel disrespected at all not until he removes the doubt

  30. Da Bucs Gut Says:

He might not be in the top 64 QB’s in the NFL.

  31. westernbuc Says:

He was down on Trask when we drafted him. Iā€™m not at all surprised that he is unranked. And the only Brady-backup that has a starting career is Jimmy G whoā€™s mostly garbage. Thereā€™s no reason to think Trask is going to be a better QB than he actually is

  32. TOMMY MORDUE Says:

CHRIS SIMMS IS A “DINGLEBERRY”..KYLE TRASK HAS NEVER HAD THE PLAYING TIME WITH THE 1ST STRING OFFENSE TO PROVE HOW GOOD HE CAN BE IN THIS LEAGUE ! HE SAT BACK & LEARNED FROM THE G.O.A.T ALONG WITH A 10 YEAR VETERAN 1ST ROUND PICK OF BRUCE ARIANS & SOAKED UP SOME KNOWLEDGE OF THE GAME..HE WAS 3RD RUNNER-UP IN 2021 FOR THE HEISMAN TROPHY..WE WILL SEE HOW GOOD HE STILL IS DURING TRAINING CAMP & THE PRE-SEASON GAMES..THAN CHRIS & EVERYONE ELSE CAN SEE ( FINALLY) HOW GOOD THIS YOUNG MAN ACTUALLY IS…UNTIL THEN..JUST SHUT YOUR PIEHOLES ! GIVE THE MAN THE BENEFIT OF THE DOUBT ( HE’S NEVER HAD A CHANCE TO PLAY IN THE PRO’S FOR HEAVEN’S SAKE ! ! !

  33. sasquatch Says:

    CAPS LOCK REEETAAARD IS BACK!!!!!!

  34. Defense Rules Says:

Folks imply that Brady ‘mentored’ Trask, but I’ve never seen or heard of any evidence of that. Can’t think of a single time when Brady even mentioned Kyle by name. Yes they sat in the same meetings, and yes they sat on the same bench, but I’m not sure that’s what I’d consider ‘mentoring’. It’s more that Trask has had 2 years to ‘observe up close’ how Brady prepares & operates. Hopefully that’ll give him a leg up this year.

  35. Pelsbuc61 Says:

These rankings are so stupid and arbitrary. Also, Brady didnā€™t come to Tampa to mentor anyone, but to win and he did just that in spite of Bowles and Leftwich.

  36. Hammerhead Says:

Prove it time. Definitely more impressive at press time than Anthony Richardson

  37. Rod Munch Says:

Heinicke is a much better QB than anyone that the Bucs have on their roster … and to be clear, I don’t think that much of Heinicke.

  38. Elita Vita Says:

Yet Trask is a millionaire. Go figure.

  39. John Mason Says:

Joe……………….Its simple there is just no film on Trask. Nine passes is just

not enough to grade him on….Brady or not!

  40. Rod Munch Says:

I still contend that Brady has no idea who Trask is.

  41. Caleb Says:

Trask couldn’t even beat out Gabbert for second string in his second season. Obviously not a top 40 qb right now.

  42. ATLBuc Says:

This is one of the dumbest lists Iā€™ve seen

    Is he? How so?

  44. Steven007 Says:

I wonder where Geno Smith ranked before last season. Granted, I’m not comparing him to Trask since he has started in this league, but this entire exercise is silly. Right there with the strength of schedule based on a year that is already in the books and has no reflection on the current state of the teams.

“Letā€™s see Trask play in a game with all the starters.”

More than one game please. I would like to see how he does as starter for at least 8 games, if not more.

He’s bound to have some growing pains at first, if he ever starts.

  46. westernbuc Says:

Steven, Geno Smith was ranked 33rd last year and Simms has been a fan of him for years.

Bonzai, if Trask gets to start 8 games next year itā€™s because Baker got hurt.

  47. bob in valrico Says:

While Brady may have answered questions, IMO that is the extent of his mentoring. It was a big fail on the offensive staff to not get Trask snaps in practice or games
with first teamers to evaluate him properly.

  48. BBQBUC Says:

Caleb Says: “Trask couldnā€™t even beat out Gabbert for second string in his second season.”

Licht stated clearly that Trask did not compete for the second string and never took a single snap with the first team. You better call him and let him know he’s wrong.

  49. BBQBUC Says:

Was Chrissy Simms one of the “experts” who had the Bucs contending for the Super Bowl last season? LOL

  50. JN Says:

    Why would he be?

  51. Lord Cornelius Says:

“What exactly has winless Jarrett Stidham done in the NFL?”

Played a few games at least. Trask is a “?” at best with the little film we have on him. Probably not on his grad-eable or rank-able list

  52. Rand Says:

    So what

  53. Brandon Says:

Stidham and Love being ranked over Heinicke and Minshew pretty much make this list invalid. I get ranking rookies that have never taken snaps higher than they should be. They are EXPECTED to play this season. It’s unknown if Trask will ever get on the field and it is difficult to ascertain his ranking based on nine regular season throws. Even #40 Desmond Ridder has had far more meaningful snaps than Trask.

    ———————

Second round pick in his 3rd year… it’s guaranteed he’s made well over a million dollars.

Kyle Trask signed a 4 year, $5,535,337 contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, including a $1,385,700 signing bonus, $1,385,700 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $1,383,834.

If he makes the roster in 2023, he will have made over $4 million in three years in the NFL.
